We have had a very focused week this week. Although we have dearly missed doing our Shakespeare lessons, we have dived straight into our new learning. After finishing our story of ‘The Little Match Girl,’ we have started studying the folk tales of Brer Rabbit, which are full of fun and trickery! Children are already transfixed by his mischievous character! In maths, we are looking at multiplicative relationships - getting a deep understanding of relationships between multiplication, division and place value.
In RE this week, we have learned about how Jesus is truly God and we have examined our own beliefs as Catholics by looking at The Creed. In our Reconciliation session, we prepared for the Sacrament next Thursday. Children now know the order of events and more details are below about what to expect on Thursday.
The children have loved learning about our own fair country and what happened after the Romans left in England. We have decided to create our own Anglo-Saxon society to be immersed in their simple, community way of life and each child is a family member of the village. We have learned about the chronology of the Anglo-Saxon takeover and also all about their homes and societal system.
Add to that a great Water safety session in the swimming pool on Thursday and our amazing trip today, all in all it has been another exciting week full of learning.

Cake Sale - Year 6 is running a cake sale on Tuesday 21st March. Children can bring 50p percake. Here is a poster advertising this:

Year 4 Weekly blog 10th March 2023 "Be't to fly round thy Grand Tower of Blackpool."
Well what can I say! These children have blown us all away this week with their rendition of the Tempest complete with seagulls in Blackpool (pictures will follow next week) They have put their heart and soul into this performance and faced any nerves to give us a confident performance which was full of teamwork and perseverance! Well done Year 4 and thanks parents for being such a lovely, supportive audience.

This week, the whole class received a Roger Robin certificate for superb teamwork and co-operation in writing and putting together their Shakespeare play. I could not be more proud of you!

Year 4 Weekly blog 3rd March 2023 "Gratitude turns what we have into enough."
What a busy week! Yesterday, we had a fantastic day - we marched to swimming in our World Book Day costumes and then the rest of the day was spent enjoying our school book ‘The Journey.’ Children have written their own versions of this story, where they can draw a magic door in their bedroom and go anywhere their imagination takes them. At the end of the day, they read with their Year 2 partners - a beautiful experience!
In other news this week, we have been getting to grips with the 11x tables, the 12x tables, square numbers and odd and even patterns in all tables! We have learned about the tectonic plates and how earthquakes and volcanoes occur on the boundaries. We have started our new RE topic and we have learned that Jesus was fully human. Also, add to that lots of Shakespeare practice!

Year 4 Weekly blog Friday 24th February 2023. "Take away my sin and I will be clean. Create in me a pure heart, God. Make my spirit right again."
A super first week back, as we enter our second half of Year 4. This week, we have reflected in our worships about creating in ourselves a pure heart this Lent. We have thought each day about Jesus’ heart and how we can follow Him to have loving, grateful, pure, joyful and generous hearts. This linked beautifully with our first meeting yesterday to prepare for first Reconciliation. We thought about making good choices which spread like ripples and help other to make good choices too.
In RHE this week, we learned an important lesson - that being thankful is a SUPERPOWER! It can help us when we feel overwhelmed with any emotion. When we feel we are going to react unwisely, we can redirect this feeling to one of thankfulness about the person we are going to upset or thankfulness for something else around us.
On Monday, we had a visit from the producer of the Shakespeare festival and he gave our little scene a big thumbs up. We are definitely in for a treat - the children have done so well!
Wednesday saw us having a special Ash Wednesday service led by Father Peter in church.
In other news this week, we have started to write our own, rather creepy fairy tales and have had a great crack at the 7x table. We have learned about tectonic plates and earthquakes in Geography. We are getting good in French at matching the correct form of adjectives to the masculine, feminine or plural noun! What a lot in one week!

Dear parents,
The time is nearly upon us for our performance at the Grand Theatre. Please read the following message regarding important times and information about the day. Consider who will be picking your child up at different times.
Playmaking Festival Schedule
9:00am Children will get a coach from school to the Grand theatre for rehearsals. They will need a packed lunch and water bottle. (or Jackie will provide if they normally have school dinners)
1pm-2:30pm first show to the public
2:45pm PICK UP 1 - Children need to be picked up from the Marks & Spencers back door in town - opposite Hounds Hill. This gives you the time to take them for an early meal before the second show.
4:45pm DROP OFF - Children need to be dropped off at the M & S back door, where a member of staff will then take them back to the Grand to be ready for the second show.
6:00pm second show
7:45pm PICK UP 2 - Children need to be collected from M & S back door again to go home.
Please fill in the online form below as soon as possible so that we know who is picking your child up at the different times. In the past, parents have shared pick ups - this is fine as long as I know about it on this form. Children will only be released to the person stated on the form and will only be collected from Marks and Spencers back door.
Also, could I request that costumes are brought in this week in a plastic bag labelled with your child’s name.

Year 4 Weekly blog Friday 10th February "No eye has seen and no ear has heard the wonderful things God has prepared for all those who love Him". (1 Cor.2:9)
This week, we have reflected in our RE lessons about the eternal life promised to us in heaven if we live our lives as Jesus’ followers. Children came up with so many interesting questions and ideas about their images of heaven. They were so respectful when listening to ideas that differed from their own.
On Tuesday, we took part in our Online Safety day. We conducted a class study by collecting our class data (anonymous) about hours of sleep, screen time and non-screen time. Children could then privately reflect about their own screen time and whether they thought they had a good balance. They reported on the Screen time study in Purple Mash.
We also thought about media - such as social media and adverts. We discussed if this always gives us a true picture of reality. Children thought about a fictional character and how her real life and social media portrayal of her life may differ.
We are learning all about clothes in French and have continued with our analysis of the 9x table in maths. children are getting so good at solving problems with the 9’s.
In other news this week, we have begun our new topic on fairy tales, by looking at and analysing the story of the Pied Piper. We have also been getting lots of rehearsals in, ready for our visit from the production manager on 20th February. It is going well!

Year 4 Weekly blog Friday 3rd February 2023 "Happy are the peacemakers; for they will be called the children of God." (Matthew 5:9)
This week, we have really thought about what Jesus teaches us about living our lives. We looked together at some of Jesus’ teachings, especially the Beatitudes. Children listened to Jesus’ advice on how to be happy and how to make others happy. We are trying so hard to put this into practice in real life! Following Jesus is both a joy and a challenge.
In Geography this week, children have learned all about parts of a volcano and how they erupt. To understand this, we first needed to gain understanding about the layers of our earth. We did this by constructing the earth with Maltesers, icing and biscuit crumbs! We then wrote another explanatory text to explain this process- children were brilliant at marking each other’s work.
The children have been amazing in maths this week - we have moved onto the nines. Children love them because there are so many tricks and patterns to them!

Year 4 Weekly blog Friday 27th January 2023 "No act of kindness, however small, is ever wasted."
This has been a really reflective week in Year 4. We have thought this week about the Gospel story of Jesus calling His first disciples to follow Him. We thought deeply about what following Jesus really meant and came to the conclusion that Jesus just wants us to be kind! We then discussed how kindness can be such small things, like giving someone a compliment, or including someone in a game or conversation, to large things such as heroic acts - but all of these acts will impact both the giver and sender in such a positive way!
We then moved on to look at another world faith this week - Judaism. Children researched and made a poster all about it - showing ways in which their beliefs are similar to ours but different in other ways.
Science - we have now learned the Water Cycle! I love this aspect of Science when we accumulate all they have learned about scientific processes to understand such an amazing thing. Children have been fascinated to find out what a cloud really is and how it rains! Explanatory texts were written and they were incredible! We were straight onto Geography next, learning facts about famous volcanoes.
The children have been amazing in maths this week with their understanding and recall of the 6x table. Each week we are working deeply with the facts, learning to understand equations such as 6 x 9 - 6 = 8 x 6 and solving two step problems involving them.

A SHAKESPEARE EXPERIENCE!
Our rehearsals are going so well! Not only will children be performing on the Grand theatre stage, their version of the Tempest scene. (Thursday 9th March)
Also, we are going on a Shakespeare themed trip to Gawthorpe Hall on Friday 17th March. This is an amazing experience lead by the hall and I can see the children will love it - they have become such enthusiasts for the Bard!
Adding together the cost of the coaches to and from the Grand theatre and the Shakespeare trip, the cost of this experience is £25 - payable on parentpay from Monday. There is an option to pay for half this month and half next month on parentpay. Please contact us if you have any problems with this and we will endeavor to help.

Year 4 Weekly blog Friday 20th January 2023 "Your job as actors is to understand the size of what you say; to understand what is beneath the word!"
It has been such a wonderful week in Year 4! The children have been really engrossed in their acting of scenes from Shakespeare’s ‘The Tempest.’ The video below shows some of our performances and writing responses so far. This week, the children have all decided who they want to be and have come home with their parts (please see homework)
We got stuck into our Science this week, understanding all about changes in states of matter - thinking about evaporation - from liquid to gas. Children watched a puddle ‘disappear’ (although it is a wonder it didn’t freeze!) and then took part in lots of investigations to change speed of evaporation.
In maths, we have now nailed that 3x tble and we have been looking at relationships between multiplication calcuations - so for instance if we know 25 x 3 = 75 we know 24 x 3 and 26 x3.
In RHE we have learned about how emotions can be confusing especially as we get older. However, we can learn to react differently to our challenging feelings by being intentional.

Shakespeare at the Grand - featuring our year 4 class!
Please purchase tickets from the Grand Theatre to watch your child in Sandgrown Shakespeare on Thursday 9th March. The link is below. They will do 2 performances and need to be there for both of them. One showing is at 1pm and the other is at 6:00pm.
The way we usually work this is that we take the children to the Grand on the day early for a dress rehearsal. They stay at the Grand then until their performance at 1:00pm. Then we ask you to pick them up (around 3pm) and take them home - or out for tea maybe. They need to be back for 5:00 at the Grand to get ready for their performance at 6:00.
I will give more details nearer the time, but I have let you know so you can begin to plan who will pick them up in the afternoon and return them. Also who will pick up afterwards at around 7:30 - 8:00.

Year 4 Weekly blog Friday 13th January 2023 "A plague upon this howling!"
What a productive week of discoveries and drama! This week we have learned to describe settings - first by imagining we are on the island which Prospero and Miranda are shipwrecked upon, in our play, ‘The Tempest.’ Then we whipped up our own class storm, with frenzy and cries of ‘Take in the Topsail!’ and ‘Mercy on us! We split! We Split!’ Children then wrote another setting description of this tremendous storm.
We got stuck into our Science this week, learning all about properties of solids, liquids and gases. By investigating, we proved that gas is matter even though we cannot see it! We love the way this class really tries to figure things out for themselves - they search for understanding! They are a marvellous bunch!
Mathematics has been all about finding the Perimeter of shapes this week. Lots of great problem solving!
In RE we have moved on to thinking about ‘Jesus our Teacher.’ We looked at stories from the bible about Jesus as a child. There are not many but even as a boy he was to be found teaching others about God. We thought about what Jesus wants us to learn.

Isaac received a certificate for being a focused and determined learner. I love the way you will try different strategies to solve a problem until you have got it! You put so much thought into what you do and you listen so intently.

Lip balms and creams. Please could we ask that children only bring these in if absolutely necessary. If they do need to apply lip balm, they need to keep them on the teacher’s desk, not in their bags or pencil cases, as some children have been sharing them with one another. It is classed as a medicine and needs to be overseen by an adult.

Year 4 Weekly blog Friday 6th January 2023 Happy new year to you all!
Although it has been a short week back at school, it has been jam-packed with so many exciting opportunities. We welcomed Mrs Gregan as our new headteacher in assembly on Wednesday. In class we started our learning about ‘The Tempest,’ our Shakespeare play that we are studying. Children really loved it and are a real bunch of actors! Mrs Gregan challenged the school not to be afraid, ‘Feel the fear but do it anyway,’ and although many children in class do feel a little nervous about acting in front of an audience, they are getting lost in their task and getting over any fears! Shakespeare classes involve developing confidence, developing teamwork and developing a deep love of his wonderful language.
In Thursday, we launched our ‘States of Matter’ Science topic by changing the state of cream/milk and making ice-cream. We shook our mixture very vigorously as you can see below!
Today we went to mass for the Epiphany. This was a lovely start to our new year where we reflected on how we can be learned and wise (our new virtues) like the three wise men.
Today, we have had a demonstration for the judo club that will be taking place on a Friday morning at school. This club is a 5 week club. There is a cost for the club, but Mrs Gregan has agreed to pay half of the fees for each child meaning that the cost for each child will be £14 for the course instead of £28.

Year 4 Weekly blog 20th December. Wishing you all a Merry Christmas and a happy new year!
Year 4 sure know how to party! We had a wonderful time on Friday with good old pass the parcel, musical statues and many other classics!
This week, our choir went to Stella Matutina to sing for the residents and wish them a Merry Christmas. They were so well-behaved throughout the trip. On the bus journey, they sang Silent Night and other songs. A passenger actually rang the school to comment on how beautiful their singing was and how impeccably behaved they were.

Year 4 Weekly blog 16th December 2022 'Let the magic of life remind you of your own miracles.'
It has been one of those magical weeks in Year 4! We have had a week full of action, intention and exciting learning. We have been so busy walking gingerly to church many times to practise our Nativity, which I am sure you will agree was so special. The children have worked as a great Key Stage 2 team and have loved singing for Jesus - it is their gift this Christmas.
Our trip on Wednesday was delightful. The children were praised for their excellent listening and participation from by all the university teachers at the Young Scientist Centre. Alongside making lovely bath bombs and bubble bars, children learned about solids, liquids and gases, acids and alkalis.
We have been busy in class too. Children wrote another persuasive letter in conjunction with our new novel the Butterfly Lion and we are hoping to finish it next week.
Today was the children’s well deserved Christmas party. They were able to watch ‘Charlotte’s Web,’ in the afternoon too. What a treat!

Year 4 Weekly blog 9.12.22 "It's the most wonderful time of the year!"
It has been a busy, lovely week in year 4. On Tuesday, we had such a lovely treat - we watched the Foundation Stage nativity. It was really magical and special! We have also spent two sessions in church this week, rehearsing our carol service. Children are trying so hard to make this their gift to baby Jesus.
In English, we have launched into our new novel, ‘The Butterfly Lion.’ THe first chapters have raised more questions than answers - which is great for our active reading approaches, being able to analyse, summarise and clarify when we read - always looking for clues!
We have become so proficient in our mathematics this half term and children can now understand the composition of numbers up to 10,000. Most of us are being really intentional about learning those times tables too. We will be going onto the trickier ones after Christmas! Lots of TT rockstars over the holidays please!
Today was our ‘Christmas Colours,’ day and what a delightful day we have had. Thank you so much for your kind donations.

On Wednesday 14th December, we will be going to UCLAN in Preston. This is to launch our Science topic beginning in the New Year, about States of Matter. Unfortunately, there is a train strike on the day of the trip. Therefore, we need to get the coach. The trip is being partly subsidised by the school and the cost is £10 payable on parentpay:
Children will need a packed lunch on this day, unless they normally have a school dinner on Friday, in which case Jackie will provide one. If they get travel sick, please let me know and medicate if needed.
Next Friday 16th December Key Stage 2 Christmas party. Children can come to school in party clothes and sensible shoes. They can bring a non fizzy drink and a small snack such as chocolate or a packet of crisps.

Scarlet Fever and Group Strep A Infections - Guidance
Dear all,
There is growing concern amongst the community regarding iGas/Scarlet Fever, we have placed here the guidance school has received to share with you. Thank you for always communicating with us illnesses and absences. This is so important as it helps us to build a picture of the whole community and from this we are able to take any action should it be required.
Year 4 Weekly blog 2.12.22 "“Why did you do all this for me? he asked. I’ve never done anything for you.’ ‘You have been my friend,’ replied Charlotte. ‘That in itself is a tremendous thing.’”
It has been an emotional week, with the children saying goodbye to the beloved Charlotte in our novel. Through this novel, on top of learning many reading and writing skills, we have really thought together about the meaning of being a true friend, like Charlotte was to Wilbur. Children have also written their own new episode and an obituary to Charlotte, where they thought about how her life had such meaning because of her love to others.
In History, it has been a busy week. Pyramid Monday was a success - we looked at each others’ pyramids and collected questions together. THen we focused on the question, “Were pyramids really built by slaves as films suggest?’ We looked at the evidence found from a village near the Great pyramid at Giza. Ask children what they found out!. Next, children learned about the process of mummification and wrote an explanatory text all about this gruesome topic - but not before we mummified a member of the class! Here are some pictures showing what fun we had!
On Tuesday, we learned our next 4 Christmas songs for our performance in church. They have been given for homework. Our choir need to practise ‘Come to the Manger’ too.
This afternoon, we have been off to the Pantomime at the parish centre as a lovely treat. All in all, a very well-rounded week.

Year 4 Weekly blog 25.11.22 " Death shall come on swift wings to any who disturb the resting place of the King!"
Well, we have had Egyptian fever this week, learning about the discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb. Bizarrely, it was exactly 100 years to the day that they discovered it when we learned about it in class. (23rd November 1922) Many children have come in to tell me they are watching documentaries at home and telling me extra facts. We are loving the mystery of the mummy’s curse! Children are avidly reading the Egyptian non-fiction books we have on the shelf and the whole class has gone Ancient Egypt mad! We did think of writing a persuasive letter to Mrs Gregan, to ask her if we could go on a class trip, linking it to our English work on persuasion!
In English, poor Wilbur the pig is still going to be slaughtered at Christmas time. Children have been learning how to write a persuasive letter to convince the farmer to spare his life. They have also written a super newspaper report this week about the discovery of King Tut’s tomb. I know I keep saying this, but my goodness what hard workers Year 4 are! Here are some examples of their amazing work this week!
In maths, children have been learning to order, compare and round 4 digit numbers. We have been busy describing our friends in French and we also learned all about allergies this week, so we can keep our friends safe.
RE was so important this week. Children reflected on how we know we can trust in God. They then learned about Zechariah and Elizabeth. Then they learned about Mary’s visitation by Angel Gabriel and how she too trusted in God.

Year 4 Weekly blog 18.11.22 " I can be changed by what has happened to me; but I refuse to be reduced by it." (Maya Angelou)
What an inspirational week it has been at school, where we have really learned about the power of Resilience. On Wednesday we were all led in our sponsored event by this amazing athlete, who recently won Gold in the Olympics for wheelchair rugby. Afterwards we were treated to an assembly where Stuart talked to the children about how, despite his injury, he channeled his passion for sport to find one he could thrive in. It was powerful listening to a person who did not let adversity define him and the essence of who he is as a person.
Then on Thursday night we had our Curriculum evening in school where we learned about the power of Resilience again! It was so lovely to see so many families sharing our learning with us and we enjoyed exploring our Jesuit virtues together!
Within class this week, we have worked so hard! Children have been manipulating 4 digit numbers, they have been been news reporters, writing excellent reports about the miracle in the barn and also have started writng persuasive letters linked to our novel. We have explored friendship and kindness this week too, as it is a key theme in this novel and children ranked the characters according to their kindness - giving reasons from the story. Add to that swimming, net and wall games in PE, coding in computing and a lovely French lesson describing personalities - it has been a diverse week!
