Year 4 Weekly blog "In a world where you can be anything, be kind."

What a joy it has been this week to get to know your children! They have already settled so well into Year 4 and have welcomed our new pupil - Poppy. We are so glad you have joined us Poppy. It has been a busy week full of new learning and exciting opportunities! We began with a lovely whole school assembly on Monday where we decided our school aim this year is simple but powerful - BE KIND!

We have thought carefully this week about how we want our class to be. Everyone has rights in class to make it a fair, happy and productive place. We discussed that we therefore have responsibilities to make sure everyone gets the right to be safe, to learn well and to feel respected. We have been reading our learning character stories to remember how to be the best learner we can be. In Year 4 the children choose children that demonstrate these learning characteristics and they get to have a little version of the character on their table for the day!

In RE and RHE this week, we have focused on our mission statement, “You are precious in my eyes.’ We have made a big class sign which says ‘We are all precious in each other’s eyes,’ reminding us to treat each other like a precious jewel. We then thought about God’s Creation and how amazing it is! Children made some of their favourite parts of God’s Creation from playdough and wrote some lovely prayers of praise.

We started our new novel, “Charlotte’s Web,’ and have already practised lots of important reading skills such as predicting, asking questions, figuring out the meaning of words and ‘reading brain.’ We have taken our Star reader tests and children seem determined to meet their reading targets this half term.

Also this week, we have done a little French - starting to describe facial expressions. By the end of the unit we will be able to describe hair colour, eye colour and personality. Watch this space!

It was incredibly hard to choose on the very first week in year 4. You have all done so well! The certificate winners were learning partners this week. Well done Tilly and Seth for your excellent level of concentration during teaching and when you are engaged in tasks. You both received Cooper Crab certificates for being focused learners.

Swimming

Please read the blog below so you are familiar with the procedure on Thursday. If you wish your child to wear goggles, please send the reply slip back from the letter.

Induction evening

This is on Wednesday between 3:30 and 5:00. Let your child take you on a tour around year 4! They will also be able to show you pictures from our trip that day and you can find out more about our class! I will be there to chat and answer any questions you may have

Trip

Also on Wednesday, we are going on a trip to Ashton Gardens in the morning. We will be hopefully staying for a picnic lunch there. If your child has a school dinner on Wednesday, Jackie will prepare a lunch. Some children have told me their parent will make a packed lunch instead. Please could you discuss this with them and ask your child to let me know or drop me a quick email to confirm.

Please ensure all uniform is labelled - especially those new school hoodies!

Reading

Please can all children read for 20 mins per day at home. Sometimes you may want to hear them read a little too to see that they are using expression and punctuation.

Swimming lessons Year 3 and 4 Thursday am

Children in Year 3 and 4 will be starting their swimming sessions next Thursday 14th September. Graham Lavine came into school today to talk to the children about what to bring and how things will run.

Children need to bring a plastic bag with a towel and their swimming costume or swimming trunks/shorts. No long ‘bermuda style’ shorts please We ask that children do not come into school wearing their underneath their uniform. PE kits can be worn on swimming day.

All girls and boys with long hair, or a fringe which goes into their eyes need to wear a swimming cap. Please could Year 4 children come into school wearing their cap so they are ready to simply get on the coach. Year 3 will need to keep this in their plastic bag.

Children will not have time to wash their hair so they do not need shampoo, conditioner or body wash. If your child suffers from eczema, they normally have a quick rinse in the shower afterwards.

Goggles

A letter will come home tomorrow regarding the use of goggles. Please read it carefully. If you still wish your child to wear goggles for their swimming session, then please fill in the form and return it to school by next Wednesday.

Arrival

Year 4 need to be at school at the St patricks road entrance early each Thursday at 8:30 am so they can be registered and get on the coach.

Year 3 can arrive at the normal time as their swimming session is from 10-11am

Children will not need any money as the lockers are able to be used free of charge. They will get changed in cubicles. Graham and the team are super at helping all students to feel comfortable in water and develop their skills. The first lesson will be an assessment to enable group placement.

Children are always hungry after swimming! Please ensure they have a healthy snack to eat afterwards.

Welcome to Year 4 - Class of 2023

A warm welcome to Year 4 to all parents and children! All your teachers have been in today getting the class ready. We are all very excited about teaching you on Monday. Here are a few things you need to know:

What do I need on my first day?

You will need to bring you own pencil case to school but no additional items to put inside it! School will be providing you with everything you need, like pencils, rulers, crayons, etc.

Don’t forget your healthy snacks for breaktimes

Make sure your water bottle is labelled with your name.

P.E

Outside PE is on Wednesdays

Swimming will be on Thursday mornings - but we do not start this until Thursday 14th September. You will need to be at school for 8:30 on swimming days. Graham is coming to explain all to us this week and letters will be given out explaining more.

Homework

Given out on Fridays and to be returned on Thursdays.

Induction evening on Wednesday 13th September.

This is going to be different to previous years’ induction evenings. We would like children and parents to come to see us. Children you can show your parents your class and give them a tour! Teachers will be there to meet and answer any questions your parents have. Come and meet the Year 4 team.

Year 4 You are wonderful!

Dear Year 4, It has been such a pleasure to be your teacher this Year. Thank you all for working so hard and growing so much in love and in learning. Even in the last week you have worked hard with our class novel (sorry we did not get to finish it!) and with making and creating your puppet shows. We even found time to learn how to TELL the time to the nearest minute.

I have loved every minute teaching you! You really are a wonderful bunch and I will miss you. But you are ready to fly up to upper KS2 now.

Year 4 Weekly blog "In a world where you can be anything, be kind."

What a lovely penultimate week in Year 4! On Monday, children entertained their audience with a super performance of 5 clarinet songs, along with Year 5. We would all like to thank Mrs. Maddocks who has helped children become musicians this year - and will be teaching them next year too.

We were very proud of our athletes this week, who took part in an intra-schools competition of athletics on the field. There were many events such as the sprint and the triple jump. I was very proud of their sportsmanship, humility and care for each other. Well done athletes!

In other news this week, there was much excitement on Thursday morning, as our VIP, Mrs Hodges cut the ribbon to open our castle, which has been aptly named, ‘Castle Hodges.’ Joy oozed from the children as they went in for the first time and climbed in and out of the windows!

We have raced through division with remainders in our maths lessons which we did with sweets. Children picked it up very quickly. We are now ending our year in maths with time. They are also working in little teams to create a puppet show of a Viking myth, bringing our History, English and Science together, on their topic of light. They experimented with shadow creation inside and outside the classroom this week - when the sun actually came out that is.

Thank you so much for your contribution to our ‘Green day’ raising money for our new re-cycling bins.

This week, Erin received a brave learner certificate for being so courageous and having such a good go at everything this week.

Benjamin received a Sadie spider certificate for excellent effort and participation. You are so productive and demonstrate true grit!

The whole class have received a Roger Robin certificate for superb teamwork and co-operation in all tasks this week, but especially in their making of puppet shows - accepting each others’ ideas and working towards a goal.

Year 4 Weekly blog Friday 7th July "Let your light shine. Be a source of strength and courage. Share your wisdom. Radiate love."

The above quote reminded me of the children this week. They did show such courage, strength and wisdom on our visit to St Bedes on Monday. The theme of the day was, ‘Let your light Shine,’ and they certainly did. Their behaviour was impeccable and they contributed fully in all the songs and prayer activities. They were just beautiful.

Funnily enough, we have started our Science topic on Light this week too! Children carried out an experiment involving boxes, objects and torches - and discovered that darkness is the complete absence of light. They also discovered that light travels in straight lines, unlike sound which travels in waves. More to follow next week, culminating in a celebration of the topic by making a shadow puppet theatre.

Viking day was spectacular! Thanks so much for all the effort that went into costumes at this busy time. Children wrote their names and messages in Viking runes. They made a video all about the true Vikings, from what we have discovered in our History lessons - which ends with our special Viking dance (see below)

In other news, we have finally finished fractions. We have been in the Viking Cosmos well and truly in English, where we have practised our reading comprehension skills with so many lovely Viking myths.

Children now know who their next teacher will be in Year 5 - Mr Cornwell. They have spent the morning with him in Year 5, getting familiar with routines and finding out a little more about him. I always feel a little sad at this time of year. I will really miss teaching your lovely children - they are a really special bunch.

Year 4 Weekly blog Friday 30th June "Unity is strength. Where there is teamwork and collaboration, wonderful things can be achieved.",

It has been one of those weeks in Year 4 which makes us so proud! On Monday it was our sports day and children well and truly lived out teamwork in action. In fact in class this week, there has been so much co-operation and teamwork going on. From working together to understand improper and mixed fractions, to planning and creating class worships, to creating the Viking cosmos, all children are becoming so proficient at listening to one another, sharing ideas and planning out how to carry out their tasks together.

They composed in groups a piece of writing describing their Viking worlds they had created (see below) and I was bursting with pride at the sheer quality of what they produced! There is so much to show you this week that I have included a sports day video and a selection of photos of our teamwork in action

Year 4 Weekly blog Friday 23rd June

What a busy but lovely week we have had in Year 4! This has seen the start to our health an happiness fortnight. We have been thinking about what happiness really is! We have focused on keeping ourselves safe and road safety. We have learned about the green cross code and actually practised crossing our pretend road on the playground. We have thought about safe and unsafe places to cross. Now is probably a great age to teach them how to cross the road if you haven’t already.

We have also had our Gym Jam Jog. Year 4 were full of energy and so was the teacher (for a little while) Thanks so much for all your sponsor money which will be used for our playground castle.

In English this week, children have been busy writing a story based on our novel. In maths we have been revising telling the time - children were very honest and said they do struggle with this! We have gone over o’clock, half past, quarter past and quarter to the hour if you want to practice at home.

On THursday, children had an excellent session in First aid. They listened so well. Here are some pictures below. Also included are pictures of our little trip to Hope Street Park to go bowling on Friday. If your child did not go this Friday, they will go next week.

Year 4 Weekly blog Friday 16th June "Some old-fashioned things, like sunshine and fresh air are hard to beat!"

I think we can safely say that Summer is here! We have had a hot, but lovely week in Year 4 - in our final half term together. This week, in RHE we have been talking about how our bodies are a gift from God and so we should respect and look after them. We talked about the importance of getting outdoors, how to be adventurous but careful and how to try to nourish and hydrate our bodies with healthy food and drink. This leads us nicely into our Health and Happiness fortnight which begins next week.

Despite the heat, children have again worked their socks off this week. On Tuesday they all took their Multiplication Test - and it was lovely to see their confidence. All the hard work has paid off! We have loved delving deeper into fractions above one whole this week in our maths lessons. Please could you practice telling the time at home with your children, as this will be a focus over the coming weeks.

In English this week, children have been busy using all their Year 4 techniques to describe characters and settings from our novel. They are amazing! They have also written some super limericks about the characters too! Here are some examples of their work below.

On Wednesday night, members of our choir sung at North Pier. They were so entertaining. Well done Ola, Rex, Esther, Arthur, Niamh and Layla. You were wonderful.

Year 4 Weekly blog Friday 26th May "He's got the whole world in His hands!"

This week, the children above led us in a beautiful worship about God’s Power. The class said that they feel God’s power when they made their First Holy Communion, when they need help because they are angry and when they are with their friends. It was such a lovely worship- thank you Layla for being a stand in too!

The children have had a very sporty week! I have included a video below showing them practising for Sports day and showing their lovely gymnastic sequences which they did in pairs. Also a few snaps of us enjoying some cake to celebrate making our First Holy Communion - (Mrs Lyons had to get some fractions learning in as we cut the cake and decided how many parts we would need!)

We have also learned all about what sound is this week - through a series of investigations. Then we tested and measured in decibels who was the loudest in the class! In English we have loved doing some paired writing, creating contrasting settings and then drawing and writing about the beautiful goddess of the emerald lake!

Year 4 Weekly blog Friday 19th May "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God."

Last Saturday was the most glorious day! Half the class made their First Holy Communion and it was such a beautiful time! They were so reverent and it was clear how much it meant to them. They also were able to receive the host when we went to mass on Thursday for the Ascension. This again was beautiful and Year 4 joined in so well with the mass response and songs.

We look forward to this Saturday for our second group of children who are ready and waiting to make their Holy Communion.

It has been a reflective week in Year 4. We started our week with a class council session where the children talked about how happy their playtimes were and how they could help improve them. We talked about standing up for injustice if we see it happening and making sure we stop and think before saying or doing something that might affect the happiness of others. This has seen lovely results at breaktimes this week. The children are developing as a big class team who support each other and want things to be fair for everyone!

This week we have deepened our fractions knowledge and we have started our new Science topic all about Sound. So many interesting questions have already been raised.

The Grand Theatre have selected footage from all your amazing Julius Caesar video clips sent in. This is their celebration of Julius Caesar below!

Seven children also went to the Grand Theatre last night to perform extracts from Julius Caesar. As the incoming theatre goers arrived, they were met in the foyer by the children giving them a taster of what was to come in the RSC show. They were so well-behaved and so dramatic too! Jo Cleasby, the Grand manager could not believe how instantly you could switch your dramatic selves on! Well done Rex, Dominic, Isaac, Arthur, Elsie, Rose and Esther! We were very proud of you! Video footage will be added this weekend!

Year 4 Weekly blog Friday 12th May "God and love are synonymous. Love is not an attribute of God, it is God; whatever God is, love is." —Oswald Chambers

This week, we have learned more about those early Christians - and children found out about the gifts we receive from the Holy Spirit, such as patience, forgiveness, courage and self-control. Through the Holy Spirit, they can call on Jesus to fill them with these gifts when needed in life. They also found out about Saul and how he converted to Christianity, changing his name to Paul.

In History, we have been thinking deeply about whether the portrayal of the Vikings is biased. After all, it was Anglo-Saxon monks who wrote most of the history of this time period. The Vikings were their enemies! An excellent class debate ensued about bias and stereotype.

In French lessons this week, it was all about the months of the year! Children had to utilise their effective searching skills to record in French what month certain French festivals were.

In maths, we are doing so well with our understanding of fractions! A real brain workout.

In English we have begun our new novel ‘The Firework Maker’s Daughter,’ by Phillip Pullman. Children are advancing so well with reading skills, analysing whether the answer to questions are stated or implied in the text. They feel ready for year 5!

We watched a beautiful worship by Sophia, Millie and Elsie about Jesus’ sacrifice. They thought so carefully about how to lead us in reflecting on Jesus’ great act of love.

Year 4 Weekly blog Friday 5th May "The best times are always found when friends and family gather round."

It has been such a special week in Year 4 - preparing to welcome a new monarch. We are lucky to have been learning so much about our country in the past in our History topics of Anglo-Saxons and Vikings. We have really examined what leadership is and what it means to be ‘great.’ This week, we have found out more about our new king - why he is on the throne now and also some of his passions and interests. Children have completed some portraits of our new king in the style of Kehinde Wiley - with a background which reflects his passions - from fighting climate change to growing plum trees - even his love of Italian food!

In RE this week, children have been learning about Pentecost. This has helped children in their understanding of being Christ’s body in this world and spreading His good news. This leads them to a deeper meaning of receiving Holy Communion for the first time, very shortly.

Today, was our celebration of our new King in our Coronation picnic - what a lovely event it was. Here are some pictures of the smiles and laughter. We also learned a patriotic song which the school sang together and made flags showing all things British.

This week, Faye has received a co-operative learner certificate for being caring, loving and helpful to others.

Isaac has received a brave for risking being wrong when having a go and always participating in lessons with enthusiasm.

Cora has received an inquisitive learner certificate for being so attentive and being able to explain what she has noticed with full participation.

PE stars for creativity in adapting sequences to equipment this week in gymnastics: Theo, Elsie, Arthur and Ben.

Notices

Holy Communion - first group on Saturday 13th May. Children will need to be at the church for 9:20 at the latest and will sit at the front. Photos are not allowed during the service. Afterwards, children are permitted to have photos on the altar and in the church garden. We are very much looking forward to welcoming you all in church.

Shakespeare - The following children have decided to perform in the pre-show at the Grand on Thursday 18th May.

Esther, Rex, Dominic, Elsie, Arthur, Isaac, Rose

They will need to be dropped off at the Grand for 6pm wearing all black. They will then received 30mins training from the RSC and then perform in the foyer until 7:15. Please book tickets for yourself and your child for this evening.

Year 4 Weekly blog Friday 28th April "Discerning what is and what is not of God, we begin to see where and how to act."

Our new virtues this half term are ‘Attentive and Discerning.’ We have taken time in class to pick apart what these tricky concepts mean. We decided to be attentive is to notice important things in situations and to be discerning is to make good choices about what then to do.

We have had a super week! This week we have learned about co-ordinates in maths - how to plot them and how to translate shapes. Children have been very attentive and have picked this up easily! We have been gathering content for a story we will write next week in English, called ‘The Dragon Slayer,’ and we have learned all about Anglo-Saxon forms of justice in History. We definitely did not agree with the effectiveness of some of them! We have also learned numbers to 31 in French and solved calculations in French!

In RE this week, children have been learning about the Ascension of Jesus into heaven. We have thought about those poor apostles - not knowing what to do, hiding in a room, afraid to step outside. Next week, we will learn how they were blessed with strength and courage at Pentecost.

Year 4 Weekly blog Friday 21st April 'You are Peter and on this rock, I will build my church.'

A lovely first week back! I was met with cheers from the children when I told them they would be having a week of Shakespeare in their English lessons. This time it is a political drama - ‘Julius Caesar,’ very different to ‘The Tempest.’ They have jumped into it with gusto and have understood the plot so well. There is a very special and creative homework challenge for them to do this week for The Grand and Royal Shakespeare company (in the homework section) Here is a video of our drama this week! There was a lot of murder and revenge!

Also this week, we have had Life Education for a visit. They did a session with Year 4 all about looking at their strengths and how ‘It’s great to be me.’ There is so much for children to be proud of in Year 4 - they are growing into such mature, reflective, kind people.

Speaking of greatness, in history this week, children have found out all about King Alfred’s achievements as an Anglo-Saxon king who protected England from the Vikings. However, they learned to look deeper as historians, to discover that what we know about him may be biased - he hired a Bishop who only wrote the good parts of his history. Maybe he was not as ‘great’ as everyone thinks!
In maths, we will be continuing our times tables practice but have now moved onto a new area of maths - co-ordinates. Then its onto Fractions next.

In RE this week, children have been learning about what happened after the Resurrection, when Jesus appeared to the disciples and made Peter his first pope. THey have also been planning their own worships which a group will deliver each week to lead the rest of the class in reflection

EXCITING OPPORTUNITY FOR CHILDREN TO PERFORM! Children have been invited to perform some lines from Julius Caesar to the public. This will need to be just a small group from the class. You would bring them to the Grand theatre for 6pm. The children would receive 30 minutes training by RSC members and then spend the pre-performance in the foyer, performing to the people coming to watch the show! They would need to wear black clothing. The provisional date for this is Thursday 18th May at 6pm

Parents, you would need to purchase a ticket for you and a ticket for yourself to watch the show. Its is by the RSC and is the full adult show - two hours, twenty minutes with a twenty minute interval - starting at 7:30pm.

Please fill in the following form this weekend if you wish your child to have this opportunity and will commit to bringing them, then watching the show.

Hang fire before booking tickets though - as I can only randomly select up to 10 children. I will try to confirm with you on Monday evening Here is a link to the The Grand site to book:

I have suggested to the children, that in church on Sundays, they may like to stay in for the full mass, rather than going to the children’s liturgy. They are learning about the order of mass in Holy Communion sessions and it would help them to follow the mass, joining in with the responses and watching the different parts of the mass take place on the altar..

Year 4 Weekly blog Friday 6th April. "He is risen. Alleluia, Alleluia!"

Firstly, can I thank you all for your donations over the last few weeks - sponsorship money, Easter Egg Competition and Lenten boxes! The children had a good look at each others’ eggs today in the hall and it has been such a lovely event!

This week has been so moving at our school. The Easter assemblies from Year 2 to Year 6 have been so special, allowing us all to reflect deeply on what it means to be Jesus’s followers and walk into the light towards Him. Children have been writing about what the Crucifixion and Resurrection mean to them personally after each assembly.

This week, the children have also been writing their own Brer Rabbit stories. They are witty and in keeping with the genre. After the holidays, we will be doing Shakespeare lessons - this time it will be Julius Caesar. The RSC are doing a performance of this at the Grand Theatre in May -it will be well worth a watch!

In History this week, it has aligned perfectly with RE, because we have learned all about England’s conversion to Christianity in Anglo-Saxon times. Also, we have greated a living graph to show the onslaught of the Vikings in Anglo-Saxon England and what degree of threat they posed in controlling our country.
