Year 5 Weekly Blog 3.2.23 ' A book is a dream that you hold in your hands'

It has been a fantastic week, as we celebrated World Book Day! It was brilliant to see all of the children dressed up, with so much creativity and thought going into the costumes. We used this opportunity to link our writing skills to our book day characters, focusing on different grammar skills and descriptive writing. We ended our day by linking up with our ‘buddy class’ Year 1 and the children got the chance to share their books and read to each other.

Our world book week started on Monday, with our English lessons taking a focus on our whole school book ‘The Journey’. A wordless book which the children threw themselves straight into by using their interpreting skills, along with teamwork to create the order of our story. The children also got the use their story writing skills by describing the settings of the different parts of the book.

In Maths, it has been all things fluency, with our multiplication moving on the 3 digit and 4 digit numbers. The children have done so much independent work and have been taking lots of pride in the quality and presentation of their work.

In PE, we began our new outdoor topic of OAA. The focus for this unit is team cohesion and cooperation and testing these skills in unfamiliar environments. The children worked together in a set of different blindfolded games, with communication, trust and teamwork being a key factor.

We continued with our indoor PE topic of gymnastics with apparatus (a lesson the children love) with focusing on balance when challenging yourself on different types of apparatus.

  • Trip to Liverpool: Information about the trip, including permission slips, are now live as a seperate blog on the Year 5 page. Another form will be going out soon, in regards to the children’s lunch choice for the trip.

  • Book look and coffee morning: Will be on Monday 6th March at 9:00am. This is a chance for the children to share some of their work that they have completed so far this year.

  • Parents Evening: The first session will be on Wednesday 15th March and the second session will be Wednesday 22nd March. Please book your slot online. This will be the same system as our first parents evening, back in October.

  • Year 5 Easter Assembly: Will take place on Wednesday 5th April, which will be about the Crucifixion.







Year 5 Weekly Blog 24.02.23 ' Lent is about becoming, doing and changing'

Our first week back of a new half term and yet again is has been action packed. This week marked the start of Lent and we celebrated this with our Ash Wednesday mass, which was led by Father Peter. The children also used our class worship as time to reflect, as we made our Lenten promises. The children also exchanged their Lenten boxes with their chosen Year 1 partners. All members of staff have been blown away by the amount of time and effort that has gone into making these boxes!

In English, we began our sci-fi story writing as the children have been re-writing the story ‘The Morning an Alien Came to Visit’, focusing on description and expanding vocabulary.

In Maths, we have begun our multiplication unit, starting with multiplying multiples of 10, 100 and 1000. We have then focused on using short and long multiplication methods to work out calculations of multiplying two digit numbers.

In PE, we have finished our outside unit of hockey by applying our passing, control, dribbling and shooting skills into games in a hockey tournament. We have picked up our gymnastic unit from Autumn 1 but have been applying our skills to apparatus. It’s fair to say the children enjoyed the lesson very much.

IMPORTANT LETTER

Finally, we need to make you aware that staff have supported the whole class in regards to behaviours that have made some children in Year 5 experience “yucky feelings”. We have written this letter to explain the behaviours we have investigated and how we have supported the class in response to what the children have shared with us.

Year 5 Weekly Blog 10.02.23 ' Nothing brings people together like good food’

Here we are! The end of another half term and a week off for which is well deserved for the children. They have continued to learn and mature as role models of our school. The whole of the year 5 staff are proud of how the children have developed and look forward to the rest of the academic year. We started our week with a very exciting French lesson. As we continued our topic of money and shopping in France, the class turned into a restaurant for the afternoon as the children explored and tasted some classic French foods.

On Tuesday, it was all things computing as it was online safety day. This is a pivotal part of our curriculum as we focused on recognizing the risks of being online and how we can solve these problems. There was also a focus on the use of social media apps and discussing the age rating of each app.

We finished our week by joining up with our ‘buddy class’ for the first time since it was announced. We have been partnered up with Year 1 for our lenten box challenge. The children beautifully welcomed our younger children into our classroom and were partnered up together. They all know now who they are making lenten boxes for and have all got a lenten box slip which includes details about their partner. In Maths, we have been powering through our division topic and the children have really worked hard throughout this unit. They have shown in every lesson that they are operating at a year 5 level but showing the learning attitude of year 6 children.

In RE, the children have been focusing on researching, as we have been looking at lots of inspirational people such as Father Damien, Sister Josephine and Pier Giorgio and researching their lives and how they all lived within the beatitudes.

In English/Science, we have continued to read through our book ‘The Universe’ and have been responding to the book by defining the vocabulary, discussing what we have learnt and applying this knowledge towards VIPERS questions.

Harvey and Georgia for being focused learners: For being so focused in our maths lessons. Your eagerness to be involved in our lessons is growing each day and you are wanting to get all of your work done.

Lily-Mae for being an inquisitive learner: For showing such a great interest in our space topic. You have even devoted your reading focus to non-fiction space books, which you have used to share with the class all of your newly learnt knowledge.

  • Judo Club- Will be available for Year 5/6 when we come back after half term. This will be every Friday at 8am

  • Sports Timetable- The newly updated sports timetable has been posted on the sports page. This includes changes to the netball schedule, football and netball matches returning and addition of new clubs.

Year 5 Weekly Blog 03.02.23- ' Being able to be your true self is one of the strongest components of good mental health'

There has been lots of fun-filled lessons this week. Starting off on Monday, we welcomed Mrs Gregan into our classroom, her first time seeing what life in Year 5 is like under her new role. She was full of praise for the children and was blown away by their focus, work ethic and teamwork.

On Tuesday, we celebrated mental health day with a whole class eco trip to Point Dune for the annual year 5 Christmas tree planting day. The children managed to bare the weather and put in a hard shift on a breezy, wet winter morning. I heard brilliant things from the teachers on the trip of the children’s’ behaviour and how they represented the school. Even so, I received a lovely email from Blackpool Transport to say thank you for how lovely the children were on the bus, which just filled us with joy.

In the afternoon, we took part in a wonderful yoga session which focused on breathing/stretching techniques and how we can calm our body and mind whenever we are feeling stressed. We finished the day with an art lesson, focusing on mindfulness and what makes you happy. The children created mood boards to resemble what makes them happy.

Matilda for being a co-operative learner: For showing your teachers that you are a trusting learner by being able to work alongside your friends whilst still producing high quality work. You have also been a wonderful learning partner in group activities.

Connor Sean for being a determined and enthusiastic learner: For showing such resilience throughout all of our lessons this week. You never give up if you are struggling and you always reach out for help, to make sure you get the most out of your learning.

Notices

Online Safety Day- Will take place on Tuesday. We will be discussing the importance of being safe online and look at ways to prevent ourselves coming into any harm/danger when online. Please can all parents share this message with children on how important online safety is and to keep an eye on your child’s online activity at home.

Half herm- Next week will be our last week until we finish for half term, finishing on Friday 10th February. School will finish at normal time on the Friday and we will be back in school on Monday 20th February.

Year 5 Weekly Blog 27.01.23 ' Kindness is something anyone can give without losing anything themselves''

This week has yet again been a productive and reflective week of learning. In RE, we have been focusing on the ‘Beatitudes’ and how Jesus wants us to live our lives on Earth. The children used these to compare to their own inspirational people in their lives and how they can acquire their values. The children also created their own beatitudes and used this task to really reflect on how they would like us to live our lives.

As we finished our Kidsafe lessons in HRE, we began to discuss our religious understanding of different stories in the bible. This week we looked at the ‘Calming of the Storm’ and reflected on what ‘faith’ is and how this relates to the story.

In Science, we are coming to the end of our forces topic as we dip into the world of space next week. We have now covered all of Newton’s 3 laws of motion and how they relate to everyday movements.

In Maths, we have finished our unit of factors, multiples, prime and square numbers, in which the children have retrieved and applied their knowledge to lots of reasoning and problem solving questions.

In English, we have begun our studies of space and have read and respond to our book ‘The Universe’. The children have been eagar to begin this topic and have dived straight into it by sharing what they already know and asking lots of curious questions.

Notices

  • Verruca’s and foot sores- When we are in the hall for PE, all children are to take their shoes and socks off for health and safety reasons. If your child has any foot sores, such as verrucas, then please can they bring their own grip socks in for them to wear. The same applies for jewelry and watches, which also need to be removed before PE lessons.

  • Whole class eco trip- We will be out of class on the morning of Tuesday 31st January. Children will come into school at normal time and will have to wear their PE kits, as we have a yoga session in the afternoon for mental health day. Reminder that a £4 fee will be required to cover the cost of the bus. This is live on parent pay and needs to be paid ASAP.

  • Film Competition- This is optional for children to participate in, which has been set by Mrs Gregan. The deadline for this is Monday 6th February.

Year 5 Weekly Blog 20.01.23- 'Focus on being productive instead of busy'

This week has definitely been a week filled with lots of hard work and learning opportunities. Whether it’s been starting new topics, continuing with big units or end of unit assessments, the children have applied themselves really well into all of our pieces of work. It has been brilliant to see the children take on the advice given from the Year 5 staff about becoming independent learners and preparing them not just for Year 6 but even for high school!

In English, we have been finishing our explanatory texts, which are all about elastic band rockets! The children have been retrieving and applying their scientific knowledge of forces to explain how the rockets work, using all of their new vocabulary.

In Maths, we have continued with our factors and multiples unit and have been doing lots of deep thinking this week, with the children using their multiplication knowledge to apply these to problem solving and reasoning questions.

In RE, we have finished our topic of covenants and have started our new topic ‘Inspirational People’. We started by discussing what the word inspire means and how different people portray it. The children loved sharing who their inspirations were and how they inspire them (and yes mums and dads were mentioned in this). We then linked this to how Jesus was inspirational and what qualities/characteristics he has.

In PE, now the athletics competition is over, our focus turned to our new topics. We started hockey in our outdoor PE lessons, with the children understanding the safety and technic of using proper hockey equipment. The children then applied these skills into some passing and controlling drills. In our indoor PE lessons, we have continued with our dance topic of ‘heroes and villains’, in which we linked our new RE topic to relate our inspirational and heroic icons.

All Girls Lancashire County Finals- A huge congratulations to our girls football team, just to make it to the Lancashire County Finals is a huge achievement in itself and to represent Fylde is such a big competition. After a tough start to the tournament, the girls won 3 games in a row to reach the shield final, where we sadly fell short. Myself and Mr. Nay were super proud of the commitment, resilience and teamwork of the girls throughout both tournaments.

Indoor Athletics Competition- Another huge sporting competition this week and it was the Indoor Athletics Competition at Stanley Park. Mnay children from Year 5/6 got the chance to represent the school in sports with lots of different events taking place. For our Year 5 children, this was the first time partaking in an event as big as this, with lots of schools competing, parents watching in the stands and judges/officials orgainsing the event. Naturally, the children were nervous but they gave their all and they all should be really proud of themselves, as are myself and Mrs Gregan.

Evan and Alex for being focused learners: Throughout all of our maths lessons this week, you two boys have been so focused and eager to get on with your work. You have listened thoroughly to instructions and have both got your head down and straight into each task. You have been so productive in the amount of work you have completed and you should feel proud.

  • Football and Netball training- Will be returning next week with the times being the same. Football training will be on Monday at 8am and netball starting at 3:30pm on Thursday. This information is also available on the sports timetable on the website (engage-> sport).

  • Whole class Eco trip- The whole class will be going down to the beach for our annual Christmas tree planting which will be on Tuesday 31st January. More details are to follow

  • Accelerated Reader- All children were given letters regarding accelerated reader. These letters are for parents in order for you to access your childs reading progress.



Year 5 Weekly Blog 13.01.23- 'Independence of choosing their own life decisions is the biggest gift we can give our children'

As we come to the end of our first full week of 2023, the children have jumped straight back into the full school work swing and have been very productive. It has been clear to see from all of the Year 5 staff that the children are developing into independent learners and are really taking control/care of their work.

There has been lots of writing this week in English, as we have been planning and writing explanatory texts. We have combined this with our forces work in science and children have been writing how to build an elastic band rocket and the science behind it all. In Maths, we started our new unit of factors and multiples, in which our times tables knowledge comes in really handy so the children have been excited to apply this knowledge to direct maths questions. Our focus in PE has been on preparing for the indoor athletics competition. The children have attempted and recorded scores for various different events and really pushed themselves physically in the track events. In RE, we have been finishing our topic of covenants and have been using the bible to research scripture, in order to investigate the different covenants that God had with his disciples and followers. As we have just passed the day of Epiphany, we have learned about the ‘mystery of incarnation’ and how both God has mulitple forms and how Jesus was seen as many different people.

Dominic for being a enthusiastic and focused learner: For always engaging in our lessons, asking curious questions and showing a real passion for all of our subjects. You are always switched on during lessons and it is clear to see that you want to learn. You are very considerate of others and can work alongside anyone in our class, making you an excellent classmate.

Nicola for being a determined and co-operative: For competing and winning the All Girls Fylde Football Tournament this week. To be the only Year 5 girl in a team full of older children may put some people off but you strived in this situation. You worked brilliantly with your team mates and even when the weather conditions got tough, you persevered and battled through to the end, resulting in us winning the competition.

  • Homework- Is due every Thursday and all homework is up on the homework blog.

  • Judo- Due to popular demand, Judo will be available for Year 3/4 this half term and then Year 5/6 will be able do Judo after half term. More information is available on the sports page of the school website (engage).

  • Medical cream/lip balm- Due to the cold weather, some children are bringing in lip balm but some children have been sharing lip balms and passing them around, this meaning that lots of germs are also being passed around. Any lip balms or creams will be classed as medical usage and if needed, are to be given to the teacher and then applied when asked.

  • Indoor Athletics Competition- Will be on Tuesday 17th January at Stanley Park, Blackpool. Information regarding this is on the sports page of the school website (engage).

We wish you a Merry Christmas

Just a short one to finish a very short week. I just wanted to say a big thank you to all the children and parents for all of your support and hard work this term. It is still hard to believe that we have finished our first term in Year 5. Please have a restful and wonderful Christmas and a happy new year!

Homework

Lots and lots of reading and times tables practice. Other than that, the children’s homework is to have a happy and merry Christmas! I’ll see you all in 2023.

Year 5 Weekly Blog 16.12.22 'It's the most wonderful time of the year'

We have finished our final full week and it has definitely been action packed. We started the week off with lots of trips out of class to practice for our Christmas concert. The children have combatted the dangerous conditions and have been careful as they walk and play with the icy pavements.

Thursday evening was a special evening for us all as we had our Christmas concert, where the children performed in front of a full crowd in church. The children sang beautifully and really spread the true meaning of Christmas.

On Thursday, the children also completed their water safety lessons in swimming. These were to finish their lessons from the end of year 4 and the children have received a certificate for this, if they have attended at least one of the water safety lessons. Some children still have not achieved their distance targets and these will be done later on in the year (most likely in the summer term).

Today, as you have all been told about was Christmas Party Day! We were in the hall in the morning where there was lots of party games, dancing and sweets. We then spent the afternoon back in the classroom, where we watched a Christmas film with lots of Christmas colouring.

Choir Trip- Children in choir will be going to Stella Matutina care home, on Monday 19th December, to sing to the relatives. Children will be in normal school uniform and will be back for normal pick up time.

Last Day- School will close at 2pm on Tuesday 20th December.

Year 5 Weekly Blog 09.12.22 'Nothing you could confess would make me love you less' Jesus

Another week down and another week closer to Christmas! The children have been getting excited with lots of discussion about elves on shelfs, advent calendars and Christmas lists. We as a school have also been preparing for Christmas by going to church on Wednesday for our advent mass. As the oldest pupils there, Year 5 were given the responsibility to buddy up with our Year 1’s. The children were brilliant in looking after our younger pupils and were excellent role models throughout the journey. You would be very proud of them.

We have also been getting into the festive spirit by preparing for our Christmas concert next week. We have been down to church for our stage practices so the children can become familiar with the settings. This has been a priority for homework, to practice these hymns at home. On Friday, the children had their confessions with Father Peter. This gave the children a moment to themselves to reflect and reconciliate, which is a huge part of them growing as children.

In Maths, we have continued with our money topic and have been applying this to real life scenarios such as buying items in a shop and receiving some change. The children have shown a deep understanding of this by applying their decimals knowledge to word problems.

In English, we have been recapping our skills knowledge of conjunctions and delving deeper into the different type of causal conjunctions. We have also been looking at explanatory texts and how conjunctions are used to construct these type of texts. We will be writing our own explanatory texts and linking this to our science topic.

In Science, we have continued with experimenting with forces and have been looking at which forces counteract gravity, such as air resistance. The children have been looking at what forces are applied with parachutes and have had fun at making their own and dropping them from a height.

Let’s Celebrate

Dominic for being a enthusiastic learner: For being so passionate towards your learning and engaging in every subject that we learn. You are keen to discover something new and your enthusiasm towards your learning is what contributes to you being a resilient learner.

Georgia for being a brave earner: For continuing to give your best in lessons, even if you are feeling down. It takes a lot of courage to approach a member of staff and tell them how you’re feeling and for you to still carry on with your learning shows you are growing as a person.

Alex for being intentional: As upper juniors, we are on a journey of becoming more trustworthy and responsible learners and you have made some big strides this week. You were an excellent role model for our younger children when we were taking care of the Year 1 , during our advent mass.

The weather is really starting to drop so please make sure your child is wrapped up with gloves, hat and a coat.

Christmas concert- Will take place at church on Thursday 15th December at 2pm and 7pm. Children have been given a booklet which includes the song lyrics so they can practice at home. A video of our in school practices are available on the homework blog. Parents are free to attend either of these times.

Christmas cards- As a school, we have decided to not send individual Christmas cards to each other but to instead donate money to charity. If they would like, children can write one card for the whole class.

Christmas party- The Key Stage 2 party will be on Friday 16th December. Children can come into school in party clothes and sensible shoes. They can bring a non fizzy drink and a small snack such as chocolate or a packet of crisps.

Swimming- The class still need to complete there water safety unit from last year. We will doing this on Thursday 15th December. Children will need their pajamas with their swimsuit underneath. Please arrive at school at 8:30am, entering from the St Patricks road gate.

There is growing concern amongst the community regarding iGas/Scarlet Fever, we have placed here the guidance school has received to share with you. Thank you for always communicating with us illnesses and absences. This is so important as it helps us to build a picture of the whole community and from this we are able to take any action should it be required.

Year 5 Weekly Blog 11.11.22- 'Lest we forget'

Another week completed and another week that has flown by. Time must really fly when you’re having fun. This week has been taken over the focus of our class assembly. We have been in the hall doing our dress rehearsals, along with script practices and our song. The children have really come together and put the effort into remembering their lines and really expressing themselves on stage. I cant’ wait for everyone else to see it in action on Tuesday 15th November. Today, we paid our respects as a school and took a minute silence for all those that lost their lives for us during the world wars. We discussed what remembrance day means to us, during assembly, by learning about some important figures such as Desmond Doss.

In Maths, we have been mastering our decimals, looking at tenths. The children have been representing decimals in so many different ways and have been completing larger decimal calculations, using the column method. At the end of the week, we introduced hundredths, where the children have learnt the relationships between ones, tenths and hundredths.

In RE, we have finished our creation topic by looking into God’s great helpers and looking into their lives to see what they did that made them stand out. We researched different saints, such as Martin De Porres and St Vincent De Paul, and the impact of all of their wonderful acts of kindness.

Jay for being an inquisitive learner: This week, you have asked so many curious questions throughout our learning, especially during our class novel, where you have been predicting the ending. Your contribution during group activities is excellent and you can work alongside anyone in the class.

Charlie for being an enthusiastic and focused learner: For always having a positive attitude towards your learning, where you have a go at every task that you do. You are full of resilience and enthusiasm, which is inspiring towards everyone in your class. You are such a supportive member of our class and you are always encouraging people around you.

Notices

Year 5 assembly- Our class assembly will be on Tuesday 15th November. We will be doing the assembly twice. The first one starting at 9:10am and then 9:35am. All family members are welcome to come along.

Curriculum evening- Will take place on Thursday 17th November at 6pm. This is a chance for parents to come to school and see what life is like at Our Lady’s. The evening will have lots of fun learning activities, which the children and parents can take part in.

Pajama Day- Will take place on Friday 18th November. This is to help raise money for Brian House so can the children bring in £1.

Christmas villages- Miss Neves has asked for children to bring in some used objects for future art lessons, which will be used for our christmas projects in December. Our class have been asked to bring in milk/juice cartons. Can children put these items in the recycling pod, which is just outside the create room.

Stuart Robinson- Due to concussion, our GB athlete Stuart Robinson had to postpone our PE afternoon. This has been resechuled for Wednesday 16th November, so children have got some additional time to collect their sponsors and to raise money for their PE activities. More information about this event is included in the forms, which the children were given last week.


Year 5 Weekly Blog 04.11.22- ' A smile is the universal welcome'

A new month and a new half term! It has been lovely to have to children back. It has been a fun filled first week back with it starting on Monday, which was ‘All Hallows Eve’. We discussed the meaning of this as we prepped for mass on Tuesday, the day of All Saints, where we celebrated this at church. The Eco councilors also began their duties, each of them partaking in particular roles each day such as litter picking, switching off lights and emptying the compost bins. They also got to go out to Hope Park and plant some light bulbs. The children enjoyed their trip and were pleased with their contributions to the environment.

In Maths, we have continued our work with decimal fractions and we have explored decimal numbers greater than one. The children have shown a deep understanding of the value of the numbers and have been able to provide some brilliant reasoning into their answers. We have also been showing how we can represent decimals in various ways, along with comparing decimal numbers.

The children are wrapping up their final piece of History this term, where they have been writing diary entries as General Miltiades, the leader of the Athenian army who guided his soldiers to victory in the Battle of Marathon.

Christian for being a focused learner- You are always engaged across all of our subjects and you are ready to learn. I never have to remind you of your behaviour and you show me that you can work alongside anyone. You respond well to advice given to you by adults in the class which is a great learning quality. Well done Christian! Keep this up.

Daisy for being a reflective learner-You show such passion towards your work and how you present it. You are never shy to ask for help, which shows an eagarness to improve your work. Year 5 assembly: Our assembly will take place on Tuesday 15th November. All parents and other family members are welcome to attend. We will be doing the assembly twice for both KS2 (starting at 9:10am) and KS1(starting at 9:35am).
