Year 6 Weekly Blog 'Lest we forget'

At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them. This week is always a poignant week as we stop and remember all of those fallen victims of war and conflict. On Thursday we put aside some time to reflect and contemplated as we looked upon our beautiful display of poppies coming down our chapel, sharing prayers for everyone who has been affected by war and conflict around the world.

The week has flown by and we have done so much exciting and challenging learning. We have read more of our class novel this week, explored how to make a successful circuit and experimented whether mateirals were conductors of insulators through our human circuit- it was all very exciting! In RE we have started our Justice topic, where we reflected on the meaning of this word and firstly what it means.

Our Mathematics this week has been on fire and we are no unstoppable at ‘shifting the difference’ to make our subtractions easier and more efficient and using our reasoning skills to tackle problems.Very impressive!

Kidsafe

This week, we have completed our 5th and final Kidsafe lesson, before our recap in summer term, about hearing parents/carers arguing. Please click the button below to find out more detail about this lesson.

As you are all probably aware, we have changed our first said system in school now, so that if your child has recieved a bump to the head/ or has had a bad graze then you will recieve a standard text mesage from school, as well as the letter. PLEASE do not be alarmed by this, this is just protocol, as we realise often letters get misplaced or do not always emerge from bags until the end of the week and we want to let you know. Letter do not need to be sent back now with a response. Thank you.

Leading Learners

Well done to Edi and Connor-Sean this week.

Connor-Sean, you are a delight to teach as you ALWAYS work so hard and do your best in any task we give you. You notice when others need help and are always first to offer your services. You have great resilience, and never give up on any tricky areas. You really brighten up our day!

Edi you are so focused and engaged during lessons, which is then reflected in your work. Your determintion to be the best you can be is clear to see. We love teaching you- what a star!!!!

Travelling Nativity

Our Travelling Nativity has started it journey visiting your homes. It is yours to keep for one night only (unless you get it on a Friday) and then you must return it to Year 6. Please make sure that it is completely ready for another friend to enjoy the next day.

You will find instructions and a camera in the sack so that you can share photos of you enjoying the birth of Christ at home. We will download them each day on the return of the sack.

Samlesbury Hall Trip

Let your Light Shine

This has been the theme of our week and we have done a lot of reflection, discussion and work around this at Castlerigg. How we can let God’s light shine through us and be the work of his hands. We have grown in our relationship with God through prayer, adoration and celebrating mass together. All of the workshops we have compelted have been centred around how we can use of talents to let God’s light sine through and how these are shown through our relationship with God and of course each other. Every one of them this week has been fully engaged in the trip and has been an absolute joy to take away, they have been so patient, enthusiastic, kind and reverent. The adoration was our favourite time, seeing the children so engrossed in their prayer and reflection was so humbling- they really have been a credit to you all. The other highlight was our time by the lake, where we took part in contemplation, foucsuing on the views and the sounds of God’s creation. God definitely heard our prayers, as a couple of minutes in, the sun broke through the clouds and shone on the lake- what a magical moment. We were lucky enough to capture this moment on camera, which is the picutre above, and the children at school have been responding to this using art work and writing poetry.

Day Two Castlerigg

What a lovely day we have had! This morning we had a creative workshop where we talked about our talents and how can use our talents let God’s light shine through. We also discussed the things that could hold us back showing these talents and what we need to encourage us.

After a delicious dinner, we then went on a beautiful walk to the lake where we spent our time skimming stones and did a short meditation where we took in the views and listened to the lapping waves. We are just getting ready for dinner now and party time!

Day One Castlerigg

What a lovdely afternoon we have had. Once we arrived, we had our lunch, met the staff and played some getting to know you games. Once we had settled in to our rooms, we completed soe creative workshops, where we made out own candles, masks and and keychain rosary beads. We have just come back from a beautiful mass in the chapel and are just having some downtime before we head to bed! We are looking forward to seeing what the day holds tomorrow…

Year 6 Weekly Blog 'Love one another as I have loved you'

Jesus asks us to love one another as he loved us. This can be so hard to do at times when often we are not feeling loved ourselves. During our RE lessons this week, we have continued to explore the Kingdom of God and how we can create it here on Earth, just as God wanted us to do. This week the children have been creating their very own webpage on this, I can’t wait to read them all. In our worship this week, I asked the children to think about our world and how we can be curious, but most importantly active, which is our mission to protect God’s beautiful world.

The week ended beautifully with Year 6’s assembly all about leadership on Thursday, inspirational heroes and of course the realization that we can all be heroes if we are willing to help. We hope you enjoyed sharing this assembly with us and I am sure you will agree we have many budding actors in our class! I feel like we are very much into the groove of Year 6 learning now, hitting our daily targets constantly. The pace of learning within the classroom has certainly ramped up. The Nowhere Emporium is certainly full of twists and turns, there are so many questions that we need answering. We have now read chapter 1 and we are intrigued to read more to find out what type of magic lies within the emporium!

Harvest Plea

In preparation for our HARVEST FESTIVAL on Thursday 12th October at 9.30am mass, as a school we have made the decision to collect food items for Fylde Foodbank who are struggling with the amount of need in our area. We would be so grateful if Year 6 could collect long life milk/juice. Donations can be made from next week and will be much appreciated -thank you.

Meet your new Year 6 Leaders...

Year 6 have now been given roles and responsibilities around the school, and what fabulous leaders they are already…

Year 6 Weekly Blog 22.09.23 - "Alone we can do so little, together we can do so much."

Collaboration is key - especially in Year 6! This week we have collaborated and shared in every lesson - this has helped us to learn from each other. We have collaborated in Geography, making graphs on Purple Mash to show the rainfall in two places in South America, in our PE playing games of cricket, in our practicing of the assembly and most importantly getting to grips with our new roles around school . Alongside this, we are striving to be curious and active, questioning the world around us and actively making changes where needed.

This whole notion of collaboration will stand us in good stead as we move forward as a class. Earlier this week they each received their positions of responsibility and what a great start to the year they have made! They came back to school on Tuesday ready and raring to go and they have worked together beautifully, what a team they make. It was so wonderful to see how they each celebrated one another! You will see this in full force on Thursday 29th September 2pm for our class assembly. Please make sure they are practicing their lines and song for next week- thank you.

Author Visit

We loved our visit from the author Dan Worsley, he has truly inspired us as writers in the exciting workshop he did with us, and we have created some wonderful pieces of writing about a boy named Bazza- see if they can tell you a bit about their short story!

Samlesbury Hall Visit

Next term in History we will be learning all about the Tudors and even writing our own biographies of Henry VIII. To aid this learning, we have arranged to take the children for a visit to the historic stately home ‘Samlesbury Hall’ on 14th November where we will spend the day there and be took on a tour around the grounds. We have added the cost of this trip to parentpay, and we wanted to give you plenty of notice- many thanks.

Year 6 Weekly Blog 15.09.23 - 'If there was ever a time to dare, to make a difference, to embark on something new - it is now!'

After two weeks of application writing, house captain speeches and class council speeches, we have nearly arrived at the point where all children know their positions of responsibility. Yet again, the children spoke with such passion and sincerity in their videos when they addressed their houses in a bid for their votes. We could not be more proud of all of the children who gave it a go and faced their fears. The videos were all different, showing all of their many gifts and skills, all in which are vital to work as a team ready to lead the school. We discussed what we had all learnt from the process and I think the children were shocked at just how brave they all were! Positions and leadership responsibilities will be announced on Monday and these jobs will start straight away. I cannot wait to see how the children get on this year and what legacy they leave on our school community. Next week we will be speaking about celebrating one another and being happy for one another’s roles around the school, we know there may be some people who will be thrilled with their leadership jobs but unavoidably, there may be some that feel disappointed. It is crucial that we deliver the same message to the children, that all jobs within Year 6 are vital in the working of the school and we must all work together and help one another to make the school a beautiful place to be. Sometimes God’s plan for us, is not always the same as what we had in mind, but he knows each of our gifts and talents, and He will always guide us along the right path, where we can make the most difference. We need to embrace every job and make it our own, I know Year 6 will do this so well.

Next week our Reception children will be starting school full time and will enter the school along with the rest of the school. This can sometimes be, as I am sure you will all remember, an overwhelming time for both children and parents. We would love some help taking these children around to their class teacher and who better than our Year 6 leaders? Every week we will be picking 4 children to come to school at the slightly earlier time of 8:40am, to help the teachers on the gates. Next week the following children have been asked, but please email if there any difficulties with this time.

Learning

We have made a really good start to our learning in class this week. In Maths we have been continuing exploring the different calculations structures of multiplicative and additive, they have been building these and discussing how we can use these when reasoning through word problems. It is quite clear at this point, those children who are really secure with their multiplications and those that need to spend a bit more time speeding up their mental recall. In Year 6 the expectations are so high and learning goes at a much quicker pace, the children will grasp concepts and move their learning forward if they do not have to spend too long recalling number facts. So please remind them to use TT Rockstar’s and other online platforms we have to practice these. We have been so impressed with their enthusiasm and energy in English lessons this week as we have been predicting and raising questions about our class novel ‘The Nowhere Emporium’. Some of their predictions were very interesting, I can’t wait to start the novel with them next week to see if some of their theories are true! Earlier in the week we also created some extended noun-phrases based on pictures from the text and used these to make our own list poems, which were brilliant! Then we have been studying South America in Geography, practicing are overarm bowling in PE!

It was lovely to see so many of you there for the Year 6 induction drop-in session on Wednesday. This is such a crucial year for your children and we must work together to ensure each of them reach their full potential and have a real sense of achievement this year. I hope you enjoyed seeing where your child learns, meeting the teachers and finding out a little bit more about the year ahead. Below is an induction presentation, that may go through key points and offer information about the year. Please always know that if you ever need to talk then we can always arrange a convenient time or please drop me an email. Hopefully, the following information can answer some of the questions that were in the box. We have also responded by organising a short meeting on Castlerigg straight after the Year 6 Assembly on Thursday 28th September 3pm, we hope you can join us.

A desperate plea:

Georgia- Focused Cooper Crab- Wow what a start to Year 6 you have had! You are totally immersed in your learning and always on task, giving your absolute best! Iris- Cooperative Roger Robin - throughout this week you have subtly helped so many children in our class. A true leader does things unnoticed and for the greater good of the class. You do this all of the time. Year 6 will be a great year for you - I can tell!

Welcome to Year 6 2023!

We can’t wait to welcome you all back to school for a VERY exciting year, full of challenges, fun learning and service. The classroom is ready for you all to step in to and I know as soon as you come through the door, you are going to make such wonderful leaders of the school. This is your final year at Our Lady’s- let’s make it the best one yet, where we achieve everything we are capable of, love and celebrate one another and serve the school through inspiring all of our younger pupils. Don’t forget to send all of your House Captain Speeches in, your deadline is next Thursday- I have already had a few sent which are wonderful!

Next week we will be focusing on our leadership roles within school and how our two new virtues (curious and active) will be at the centre of these roles. We will be applying for the jobs we would like, looking at how WE can make a difference in our school and looking at some inspirational leaders of the past.

Don’t forget to come equipped with your own pencil cases, making sure you have all you need in there.

Indoor PE days will be on a Monday. On these days you need to make sure you wear tracksuits but also have a pair of shorts either under your trousers or in your bag to get changed in to.

We will not be starting Indoor PE the first week back.

Outdoor PE is on a Wednesday, our first one is on Wednesday 6th September.

Art in on a Friday- please remember to bring in your art tops to stop your uniform from getting paint on- we will keep this in our trays.

Homework- will go out on Friday afternoons, the same time as the weekly blog, and will be due in the following Thursday.

You are all invited to our Induction evening on Wednesday 13th September. This will be much different to last year, starting at 3:30 and finishing at 5:00. We would love for your child to show you around their new classroom, and for you to become more familiar with our school. You will also be able discover more about the exciting opportunities and topics that they will be learning during their time in Year 5. We will be in the classroom to answer any questions you may have! More information, such as important forms that will need completing will be available soon so please do keep checking the Year 5 page.

Our school ... our class ... is richer because of you

What an emotional but beautiful week we have had in Year 6. It is always sad to say goodbye, but my goodness, are they all so ready to spread their wings and fly at High School! It has been such a privilege to have taught Year 6 this year and we have loved every minute being with the on their magical journey. They have risen to every challenge, worked their socks off and showed so much love and compassion along the way. They will all be greatly missed by everyone at Our Lady’s.

It has been a week of celebrations and goodbyes. After a beautiful leavers mass for our Year 6 and dear Miss Hodges, we made our way to complete our crazy golf, chippy lunch and then the parachute games the children have been desperately asking for. The ice cream’s Mrs Gregan treated us to were also wonderful. We had so much fun altogether- Harriet sadly you were too poorly to come and missed you but you were there with us in spirit!

Wow, what a performance! Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was amazing! We are so proud of them all…

Today was a perfect way to end their primary school journey … this morning the staff performed their very own ‘professional’ pantomime of The Wizard of Oz. Such a lovely way to thank all of Year 6 for the time they have shared with us.

Finally, the Year 6 team would like to thank you all for your continuous trust and support throughout the year. We have loved reading all the children’s cards and kind words and really appreciate any gifts we have received, although the real gift has been to teach all of your beautiful children. Thank you.

Year 6 Weekly Blog 'the earth is what we all have in common' so let's look after it!

Happy Green Eco-Day everyone! Thank you for your donations!

It is another busy week next week, with the play. Most of you have ordered and received your tickets now. The show starts at 6:30pm and will be approximately 2 hours long. The children need to arrive at school at 6:10pm, to get changed in to their costumes. They all look fabulous in their outfits, thank you so much for making such effort. Here is a sneaky peak at rehearsals …

This week in class, we have discussed the arguments for and against home-schooling- a topic that was raised in our class novel. Our Maths and Geography has continued. During PE, this week we partnered up with some of our Reception friends, and made a game up for them to develop their fundamental skills. Year 6 loved it and were so lovely with them all.

Our ‘Castle Hodges’ has now been opened and we had a lovely blessing, naming and opening ceremony as a whole school, with who better to cut the ribbon, than our very own Miss Hodges! It is safe to say, the castle is a huge hit amongst all ages and Year 6 are relieved that it has been built just before they have left, as apparently this was their idea in council!

On the last day (Thursday) we thought it would be lovely if the Year 6 parents came to collect your children at the later time of 2:15pm, this gives more time on the playground to say your goodbyes and to take any pictures that you may want to take of their final day at Primary School.

We are all looking forward to the leavers day out next week! It is imperative that all children MUST have a bag with them, containing plenty of fluids, a snack, hat and sun-cream. They may also need a waterproof coat as it is so unpredictable at the minute. They are able to wear their own clothes on this day, however please could we be mindful of the appropriateness of outfits as they are attending mass first. Sensible shoes for walking must also be worn.

Reports have come out today with the children, I hope you enjoy reading and reflecting on them, they have so much to celebrate from their time at Our Lady’s but like everyone, always something to take away and learn from. The most important part of your child’s report, is the one written by us, as their teacher. We celebrate the WHOLE child, not just their performance on one day, so please let this be your focus and not the SAT’s results. SAT’s results are in the pack, so please have a good look at them along with the explanation- the standardised score on reaching expected for all papers was 100. Remember, results from a test never define you as a person, just look at what they have all achieved this year- there is so much to celebrate and be proud of!

Wow Max, eyes are drawn to you while you are on stage. Your enthusiasm, confidence and delivery is infectious. Thank you for working so hard on your character, and doing your absolute best on stage! You know every single word of the songs and remember all of the dance moves- we are so impressed!

Asher, you are such a gentleman and an absolute pleasure to work with in the hall, as you push yourself daily out of your comfort zone to give your very best and you are doing amazing! We are so proud of the confidence you are showing! Likewise, in the classroom, you show great independence and focus- what an all rounder! Thank you.

Intentional and Prophetic Butterflies

This half term we will be on the lookout for all the children that are intentional in the choices they make, thinking about the impact this has on the world and others around them. We will also be spotting children who are prophetic, who do good deeds and who stand up for that is right. This week we thank Evie for being intentional and prophetic.

Year 6 Weekly Blog ‘If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change’.

What a busy week we have had in Year 6. We’ve managed to keep all of our learning going whilst finally finishing our play. Next week we will be running all the way through, making small changes and improving what we have done. There are still some children not fully familiar with their lines, please spend time this weekend going over their parts, making sure they know all their lines off by heart with the right expression. They have had their scripts for 5 weeks now and there is only one week to go! Most have booked tickets now, so these will also be sent out some time next week. This week we have continued our learning in Geography, where we have looked at countries, cities and towns that make up the UK. In Science, we finished our learning around fossils and classified living things. Our transition learning continues, this week our focus has been on whether we have a fixed or growth mindset and what we can do to change our attitude. On top of this transition preparation, all children have now been for a visit to their new high school and all have come back positive, looking forward to their new chapter, with of course some nerves. We have spoken in class about these feelings and how we need to share them with the people around us. We will of course, be discussing this in more detail over the next two weeks.

Our final DT groups completed their ‘Come Dine With Me’ experience and I have to say the desserts looked delicious. Here is a few pictures over the last few weeks, you can see just how much they have enjoyed this …

Leavers Day

As we approach the final two weeks of the school year, the celebration of our Year 6 children is at the forefront of our minds. Over the past 7 years, the children have grown into young people who are ready to fly. Young people who know how to be the change that they want to see in the world. They could not have achieved this without the love and support that they received from their school community, and more importantly, their family. For this we thank you.

On Wednesday 19th July, the whole school community will come together at the Leavers Mass to celebrate the class and Miss Hodges, who is sadly retiring in summer. This will take place at 9.30am in church.

Following the mass, the children will set off on their day of celebration. They will be walking down, along the beach, to Fairhaven Adventure Golf and Adventure Playground, where we will stay and have lunch and games for the afternoon. We will then head back to school for the end of the day.

There is just a small charge of £5 for the day, we will subsidize the rest and this will be on parent pay on Monday.

Next week we will finalise arrangements and what your children need to wear and bring with them on the day.

Grace, you are such a calming influence on our class. Your little acts of kindness and consideration goes a long way, as you discreetly help those around you. You are always a cooperative learning partner, that supports and encourages others- thank you.

Saul what a pleasure you are to teach! You are working hard independently in class but most of all we love your positive attitude and fantastic sense of humour, so thank you for making us laugh daily! 

Intentional and Prophetic Butterflies

This half term we will be on the lookout for all the children that are intentional in the choices they make, thinking about the impact this has on the world and others around them. We will also be spotting children who are prophetic, who do good deeds and who stand up for that is right. This week we thank Max for being intentional and prophetic.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory performance: Monday 17th and Tuesday 18th July at 6:30pm.

Year 6 Weekly Blog 30.06.23 “Don't forget what happened to the man who suddenly got everything he wanted.” Charlie Bucket: “What happened?” Mr. Wonka: “He lived happily ever after.”

Dancing, singing and laughing has most definitely been the theme for the week this week in Year 6! You are in for such a treat with their end of year play. When I watch them on stage now, I can’t believe some of them are the same children that started the play 3 weeks ago. Their confidence has grown so much and are now so much more comfortable on stage that they are bringing their characters fully to life! This week we have more or less completed the play, with just the final scene to go, so next week we will be running from the top all the way through each day, to tweak any changes we may need to. Please make sure Year 6 spend some time this weekend going back over all of their lines, thank you. On Monday, we will be starting to try on our costumes to ensure children have got everything they need, so please make sure all items they need arrive in to school by this time if needed. If you have not heard about costumes as yet, then you will on Monday! This is a long process, so bear with us. Thank you to all those who have sent in costumes and items already!

Year 6 have been so busy in class too, during play rehearsals, they have continued to work hard on their class novel ‘Skellig’, looking deeper in to the text by answering some tricky comprehension questions. Maths fluency and reasoning has continued with puzzles and problems and the children have started their transition lessons, where we talked about how we choose our own attitudes and reflected on what we need to do to be a ‘kid awesome’ and become success learners!

Year 6 have excelled in their jobs around the school this week and the teachers have been praising them on their support within the classroom, in fact I think they wished they were in there permanently. They have sat with the children in their class at lunchtimes to help keep the noise levels down, they have been supporting them in their work, reading with children and even building towers in Reception…

Such a shame about the weather on Wednesday, typically the sun was shining the next day! Don’t forget the new date for Sports Day is 12th July, 1:30pm.

Hollie-Rose, you are so pro-active and hands on, always ready to help when needed and see what needs doing! You are such a caring learner partner, thank you for always having patience and showing love to your classmates- you make our class a happy place to be!

Wow James, you astound with just how resilient and determined you are at learning all of your lines- and you have tons! Not only do you come prepared, clearly having practiced your expression and understanding of what you are saying but so much enthusiasm! You are a joy to work with on stage and that smile is contagious! Thank you for making my job as director so much easier.

St Bede’s Transition

Children are being picked up at 9:20 by members of staff from St Bede’s and will be dropped off back at school just before pick up time. Children all need to bring £2.40 for their school dinner- please don’t forget.

Tickets are now ready to go on sale for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. There will be three performances that you can buy tickets for:

Monday 17th July - 6.30pm

Tuesday 17th July - 9.30am

Tuesday 17th July - 6.30pm

Each family will be offered 3 tickets that can be used across the performances, not 3 tickets per performance. For example, you may request 1 ticket for Monday and then 2 tickets for the evening performance on Tuesday.

There will be a waiting list for any additional tickets. Tickets are £3 each - the maximum you need to pay on Parent Pay is £9. Please complete the form below indicating how many tickets you require. Please complete the form if you feel like you will require additional tickets. Do not pay for these yet.
