Year One Weekly Blog - 2nd May

Magic moments

RE

We learnt about Jesus’ journey along the road to Emmaus this week. We learnt about the people Jesus saw along the way and what happened when they arrived. The children were then able to correctly order the sequence of events.

Our class liturgies this week were all about Our Lady, as May is the month of Mary.

This week we decided on our fundraising challenge to help us tick off one part of our start charter. We also started planning our laudato-si, connecting to our common home by helping the bugs and the bee’s in the forest school area.

English and Maths

English has been very exciting! A time machine landed in our classroom not once, but twice! The first time some clues were left last week from the Mesozoic era - dinosaur footprints, meat and a book called 123 lets do the dinosaur. The second time the time machine landed it brought us clues from the stone age - writing on a cave wall, a fire, mammoth fur and a book called the caveman next door.
The children used their detective skills to discover what had been left and began learning all about Ogg the caveman. We began giving Ogg some advice on how to be safe in our world and thought about what or who we would like to come out of the time machine.

Maths this week has been all about addition. We have introduced the + symbol into our learning and began writing equations using the = symbol. The children have grasped this brilliantly!

Science

What fun we had in Science this week! We did lots of retrieval and remembered all the things we learnt at the beginning of the year. The children did a great job of remembering almost everything! We ended our lesson by completing our experiment! The children used eggs - thank you to those who sent some in - seeds, cotton wool and soil to conduct an experiment of growth. Will the seeds grow in both soil and cotton wool? Will one grow faster or stronger? I have given the children the responsibility of looking after our seeds themselves to create a sense of responsibility and if they grow - a sense of pride. I have popped these on the windowsill so you can have a peek at these yourself and discuss it with your child. 4 days in and we are so surprised by what has grown already!

History

We are learning all about the Great Fire of London. This week we began comparing firefighting in 1666 and firefighting now. We looked at the different equipment firefighters used then and now and how effective it would be.
The children then went into our role play fire station and began acting out some of the jobs firefighters do everyday.

PE

We have had a great week practising our running in athletics in preparation for our upcoming sports day!
Sports day is Tuesday 10th June at 1:30pm.

Going deeper…

In my happy mind we have started our final topic: engage. In this weeks lesson we looked at goal setting. What is a goal? How can we set a goal? What are the three steps? How can we achieve it? We set a goal as a class to raise money for our star charter and began doing our steps in order to reach our goal.

Conversation starter: What goal can you set together as a family? Do you have any individual goals?

Lets celebrate!

Our certificate winner for being a determined learner goes to.. Kira! Well done you have done some brilliant learning this week and made all the right choices, keep it up!
Our virtue winner goes to… Eliza! You have been curious and active in your learning this week and showed these virtues all week. Well done!

Thank you to you both for being super role models for our class.

Important information and reminders.

As a part of our star charter we have been tasked with raising money for a charity. At the beginning of the year the children decided they wanted to raise money for Alderhey Children’s Charity as it is one close to our hearts.

To raise this money, Year One will be completing a 15 day fitness challenge starting today (2nd May) and ending on the last day of this half term (23rd May).

Please see the separate blog for more information and a daily upload of our challenges so you can keep track of our progress.,

Another part of our star charter is to do something for our common home. The children decided at the beginning of the year that they wanted to make some bug hotels and some beehives. As we have a forest school day coming up, the children will be making some bug hotels to live in the forest school, if on your travels or weekend activities you come across any natural resources that can be used please send these in for the children! We are very excited to help the other living beings in our home.
