Year One Weekly Blog - 9th May

Magic moments

RE

We learnt this week all about the ascension! What this was and what happened. Where did Jesus go? What did he tell the apostles will be in his place?

What a momentous week it has been for Catholics, with the announcement of our new Pope Leo. We have been on “Pope watch” at school and we watched the video of our Pope on the balcony together in class today. We discussed who he is, where he’s from and what he will do for the world. We prayed for Pope Leo and discussed his love for Our Lady.

English and Maths

English this week has been all about Ogg! Who is Ogg? What do we know about him? How can we keep him safe in our modern world?
We then created a story map of our story ready to begin rewriting it next week

In Maths this week we have been focusing on both addition and subtraction. We looked at their symbols and what this means within an equation. The children were then able to successfully find the missing part and the answer to those equations.

Science and History

In Science this week we have been recapping our knowledge of plants and their parts. We went on a flower hunt around the field to see what we could spot and which flower was the most common - daisies. We then ended our session with a discussion about sea plants and thought of some brilliant “I wonder why” questions.
We also kept an eye on our growing cress - it has grown so much! However some have been overwatered and unfortunately died - this created great discussion in class. The children have been very eager all week to have a taste, so today we did just that! There was mixed reactions of liking and disliking it and most children said that it was spicy!

In History we focused on the timeline of events for the Fire of London. The children told each other the brilliant facts they found out for their homework and we worked in teams to fill in the timeline.

Going deeper…

This week has been deaf awareness week, for our HRSE lesson we looked at how people who can’t hear might struggle in our world and the different things we can do to help them. We then learnt some sign language together and sang some songs whilst singing along. We used the YouTube channel singing hands to help us learn.

Conversation starter: Do you know anyone who can’t hear or has a hearing aid? What things can you do to help them?

Yesterday was VE day - we celebrated as a whole school by having a picnic lunch together out on the playground. We listened to some facts about VE day and sang the national anthem all together.

Lets celebrate!

It has been a brilliant week of exercise as the children have been completing their daily challenge! Please don’t forget to check our fundraising blog daily to see pictures of the children completing each challenge and keep track of our progress.

Important information and reminders.

A reminder about our 15 day fitness challenge, we are a third of the way through! Please ensure yourselves and your families are sponsoring the children for their challenge so we can raise some money for our chosen charity.

Another part of our star charter is to do something for our common home. The children decided at the beginning of the year that they wanted to make some bug hotels and some beehives. As we have a forest school day next week, the children will be making some bug hotels to live in the forest school, if on your travels or weekend activities you come across any natural resources that can be used please send these in for the children! We are very excited to help the other living beings in our home. So far we don’t have much so it would be much appreciated.
