Year 2 Weekly Blog Friday 9th January "I am the Root and the Offspring of David, the bright Morning Star”.  Jesus

What a wonderful start to a bright New Year. The children have all come back to school ready to learn! Being a STAR has been at the heart of our thinking this week. Cora, Elijah and Emmett planned a beautiful worship for the whole class. Their theme was “The Star” linking into he feast of the Ephipany. We prayed for all those people who shine in your lives! We then went onto learn more about “Catholic Social Teaching”. These teachings help us, as Catholics, to act as Jesus in our world today. We are focusing on the foirst teaching- Human Dignity. From this we are growing to understand that we are all made in the image of God and our differences make use special and truly unique. We read two beautiful books that helped us to understand how we can embrace difference and make one another feel special. I have linked the two stories below in the “Go Deeper” section of my blog.

In RE we studied John the Baptist and the Baptism of Jesus. We did a brilliant retelling of this important event. Why not ask your child the following questions:

Where did John live? What did he wear? What did he eat? Which river did he baptise in?

What appeared when Jesus was baptised? What did the voice from heaven say?

GOING DEEPER IN CONVERSATION

What is Human Dignity. Read one or both of these stories and chat about what makes your child truly unique. Click the picture to open the book.

MAGICAL MOMENTS OF LEARNING

The children have dived straight into all their learning this week. In English we have started our new topic Amazing Birds. We have been working in small guided reading groups to find out more! We have learned how to use a contents page and the glossary in a factual book. The children have excelled in maths going deep into their understanding of “difference”. We understand that it is a comparative concept and when we subtract we can find the difference. We have started our next My Happy Mind topic - CELEBRATE and explored “Character” which linked beautifully into our Catholic Social Teaching lesson.

LET’S CELEBRATE

Our Virtue Star this week is Poppy. Our new virtues are Elquoent and Truthful. Poppy is everyones’ friend. An honest friend who uses loving words all the time (especially with her cousin!)

Our Learning Star is Jaxon. Jaxon just devours all the learning in class - a joy to teach!

IMPORTANT REMINDERS

We have a class assembly coming up this half term - please pop this date in your diary Tuesday 27th January 9:15 and again at 9:35.

Forest school take over day this term will be Friday 6th February

Parents day February Friday 13th - Appointments will be available soon. I’ll be sending out a brief mid year report so we can focus on areas to help with in the meeting.

Class trip to Martin Mere Wetland Monday February 9th. I have one volunteer helper for this trip and I really need two more. Please email if you are able to join us for the whole day. Parent Pay is now open for the trip and because I am taking the children away from the local environment I need your permission. Please complete the form below.

Finally, as part of our topic Amazing Birds an incubator with eggs will be arriving just before Easter. Hopefully these will hatch and little baby chicks will arrive. These little creatures will live in our class for 2 weeks. On the last day of term 2nd April we will hand them back to the company supplying them. However, if you would like to adopt a chicken and you have the space and facilities to house them you can have them for a fee of £5 (the company not school are charging). In line with DEFRA rules you will need to sign a form which guides you on their welfare before taking them. I have popped all this information on now, so that you have time to consider this offer.

Thank you - have the best weekend from the whole Year 2 team
