Year 3 Weekly Blog Friday 12th March - While I am in the world, I am the light of the world.

March 13, 2026 Lesley Hotchkiss

This week our Word of the Week has been rejoice. In RE we listened to the Gospel from the Gospel of John 9:1–38, where Jesus heals the man who was blind. We talked about how the man must have felt when he could see for the first time and why this story gives people a reason to rejoice in God’s love and power.
As Mothering Sunday is this weekend, we also spent time praying for our mums and all the special people who care for us, thanking them for the love and kindness they show every day.

In RE this week we focused on the Offertory and the Eucharist in the Mass. We made links to The Last Supper and discussed how this special meal connects to what happens at Mass today. The children looked closely at the Eucharistic Prayer, thinking about its meaning and why it is such an important part of the celebration. We reflected on how the bread and wine are offered to God and become a special sign of Jesus being with us.

Going deeper in conversation

Why do you think the Last Supper is remembered every time we celebrate Mass?

What happened at the Last Supper?
How is this similar to what happens during the Eucharist today?
Why do you think the offertory is an important part of the Mass?

This week’s learning.

In Science we learned about the structure of flowering plants. We identified the different parts of a plant including the flower, stem, leaves and roots. We went out onto the school field to look closely at the daffodils growing there and were excited to spot some roots under the ground in our school allotment area. In English we worked on retrieving information from a digital text about the strange and sometimes disgusting remedies the Romans used to try to stay healthy. The children were fascinated (and a little shocked!) by some of the cures people used in Roman times! In Maths we have started learning column addition. The children have been identifying the addends in addition equations and within column addition calculations. We used our knowledge of place value to help us set out our column additions correctly, making sure the ones, tens and hundreds are lined up in the right columns. The children have been practising solving calculations carefully and explaining their methods.

We have also begun preparing for our Easter worship, which will focus on The Last Supper. Next week the children will bring home their lines to practise, and I will upload the songs to the homework blog so they can practise at home too.

Year 3 Football Opportunity

Representing the school at any event is a proud moment and one that is often remembered long after a child has left school. It is really important to us that as many children as possible have this opportunity as they move through Key Stage 2. Representing the school is also a reward and those selected are selected because they can be trusted and be wonderful ambassadors four Our Ladys. On Tuesday 24th March, our cluster of schools is putting on some Year 3 football fixtures as a chance to see what it is like to represent their school at a younger age. Both girls and boys can be selected for the team. As they are so young, it is important that they have prior experience of playing football. Training and selection will be next Wednesday morning at 8am on the school field. Being trusted and being respectful is an important part of this selection. There will be lots of opportunities for your child as they move through school with increasing sports teams, so please do not worry if you feel this is something that is not appropriate right now.

If you would like your child to be involved, please complete the form below.
