'Jack Frost was no longer there, the spell was broken… see you next Winter'

Kazuno Kohara

What another superb week in Reception we’ve had! During our RE sessions, we have continued our discussions about the Three Wise Men and how they followed the star all the way to Bethlehem, where they found Baby Jesus. The Wise Men gave their gifts of Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh. We’ve also learned about King Herod, who was an angry and unkind ruler, and wanted the Three Wise Men to tell him where Baby Jesus was.
Our two prayer leaders this week led a lovely liturgy session with the theme of gifts. They created some lovely gifts to be placed on our class worship table and enjoyed asking the class how they were going to spread love, just like Jesus did.

Each week we will give you a question that we would like you to think about and discuss together at home. This could be over dinner time as a family, at bedtime, on a walk or even in the car. However you choose to discuss this question is up to you, but the idea is that it will help to give an insight in to what we talk about in school, help children to understand more about themselves or others.

Conversation starter:

The three wise men brought special gifts to baby Jesus—gold, frankincense, and myrrh. If you were visiting a very special baby today, what gift would you bring and why?

What adventures have we been on this week?

We have learnt about Mary Anning and David Attenborough, making our own play dough fossils, writing postcards, observing animals and so much more.

Literacy: On Monday we recieved a letter from Jack Frost, he had lost his hands so we helped him find them, they were outside! We wrote a letter back to him: ‘To Jack I put the hands in the freezer from ….. ‘, we learnt two set 2 sounds ‘ee’ and ‘er’ and the trickey red word to.

We created a word bank as a class for the character and setting descriptions, we used these in our learning landscape to write simple sentences.

Set 1 sound mat

Art: We learnt about Barbara Hepworth and made our own inspired clay sculptures, don’t they look amazing! Next week we are going to create landscape pictures using natural resources. If you are out and about and find any exciting Autumn treasures, such as sticks, leaves, flowers conkers etc we would love to use them for our pictures, please bring them in for Monday.
