Year 3 Weekly Blog 26th April - “A true shepherd leads the way, he does not merely point the way.” (Leonard Ravenhill)

Class Worship
Emilia, Fletcher and George led our class worship on Wednesday, we made the most of the sunny weather and sat outside to listen to them share their prayers. We listened to the children read Breakfast By Galilee (John 21) and sang The Table and Sing Hosanna together. Next week, our class worship will be led by Joseph, Lena and Phoebe.
In RE, we spoke about Pentecost and how Jesus’s disciples and his Mother Mary prayer together in the upper room following Jesus’s ascension, whilst they waited for the Holy Spirit. We believe that Mary still guides our prayers and as a class were able to recall prayers we knew to Mary. This led us to our class Rosary beads and the children were keen talk about their own Rosary bead that they have at home, a few children have even brought theirs in this week to show the class.

Our word of the week has been “Shepherd”, which led beautifully into conversations about Father Peter and how he has guided his flock in his 50 years as a Priest. Thank you to those parents who joined us in church on Thursday to celebrate Father Peter’s amazing service and contribution to our parish. Year 3 sang their hearts out, we had a wonderful morning.

This week’s learning:

Maths: After our success with column addition last week, we stepped into to the world of column subtraction. Once again the children’s mental skills have helped them hugely and we are now able to subtract 2 and 3 digit numbers using columns - the really tricky stuff starts next week when we start to look at calculations where we need to exchange tens for ones.

Geography - This week the children have collected data about their friend’s parents - where they work and how they travel to work. We used this data to draw bar graphs and thought about what this data tells us about people who live locally. We came to the conclusion that most local people work locally, only a few parents travel further afield, by train, to get to their places of work.

English: Anyone in the corridor, passing Year 3, may have been mistaken that there was angry tribe inside ready to go to war with the Roman’s in our classroom. We certainly found our strong persuasive voices whilst we reenacted Boudicca’s inspirational speech. As a class we discussed what made Boudicca’s speech so good - an idea in the opening statement, rhetorical questions, strong emotive adjectives with her opinion of the Roman army and their behaviour woven in, then a closing paragraph that made emotions run high. Take a look yourself - what do you think?

Conversation starter…

Who are shepherds in your family? How do they take care of their flock?

This week we have spoken in depth about how Father Peter has been a good shepherd and guided our parish. Who are the shepherds in your family? How do they nurture and guide their flock? What qualities do they have that make them good shepherds?

Reminders

  • Polite Reminder - We are a ‘nut free’ school - this includes packed lunches, a number of children have had nutella sandwiches this week, not only an unhealthy choice but this also goes against our ‘nut free’ policy that is in place to protect children in our school who have severe allergies.

  • PE Days - Monday outdoor PE, Wednesday indoor PE. PE kits to be worn on these day, full school uniform the rest of the week unless your child has a sports club in the morning ie Judo on Friday.

Have a wonderful weekend, let’s hope the sun stays
