Year 2 Home Learning - Thursday 16th July

Good Morning Year 2!

Well, this is it! We have reached the end of our year together, and what a year it has been! Tomorrow, the whole school will be completing the same activities so that we can celebrate the end of the year as a whole school community.

Although this year hasn’t been as we would have expected, I couldn’t be more proud of you ALL. Both your learning in school and at home has shown just how far you have come, how much you have grown, and what independent and confident learners you are becoming. You all amaze me with your determination and resilience. Although this year may have been tough, you never once gave up and continued to shine like the stars that you are.

Not only are you precious in God’s eyes, but you all truly are precious in MY eyes! I wish you all the best of luck for Year 3, but I know you will be fine and are going to love the new challenges you will face. I will most certainly be popping in to see you all as soon as I can.

Enjoy listening to the story below - ‘Spinderella’ by Julia Donaldson

In the story, Spinderella learns an important lesson. Can you think what it might be?

Now I would like you to reflect upon the personal qualities and skills that you have developed throughout your time in Year 2. Think about our learning characters. Do you feel like Year 2 has helped you to grow more determined? Do you feel that you are now a kinder and more loving friend?
Use the flower template to record your reflections on. You could put your name in the middle and add your ideas to the petals, or you could add your idea to the middle and colour the petals. It is up to you!

Year 2 Home Learning - Wednesday 15th July

Good Morning Year 2!

Have a look at the image below. Do you recognise it?

That’s right! We looked at this image right at the beginning of Year 2 when we were thinking about our class rules and expectations. Have another close look at the classroom and think carefully about the following questions:

Which Blob do you think best represents you and your time in Year 2?
Do any Blobs show any of the great choices that you made in Year 2? Do any of the Blobs represent any of the wrong choices you may have made in Year 2?
Which feelings do the Blobs represent? What colours would you associate with those feelings? For example red for anger or yellow for happy. If you are able to print the image, you could colour each Blob in the colour to match their feeling.
Remember that everyone looks at the image in different ways. What you think might be different to what someone else thinks. Did you ever think that someone felt a certain way in Year 2 when it turned out that they didn’t feel that way at all?
Maybe you could give the Blobs that represent you a number and then write about when you felt like that in Year 2 and why. You could have felt like many of the Blobs - remember this is perfectly fine!

Enjoy reflecting upon your thoughts and feelings throughout your time in Year 2.

Year 2 Home Learning - Tuesday 14th July

Good morning Year 2. How are you all today?

Last week whilst working with some of the Year 1s, I discovered that many of them had worries about Year 2 and felt a little nervous about moving into a different class with new teachers.

Therefore, today I would like you to write a postcard to Year 1. In your postcard I would like you to tell the Year 1s what they can expect when they come into Year 2. Do they need to be worried? What will they be learning about in Year 2? Include your favourite memories from your time in Year 2. What made you smile? What advice would you give them? If you could go back, is there anything that you would change? Have you grown to be more of our learning characters this year?

Use the template below if you wish. I have also created a 2DO for you on Purple Mash if you would prefer to write it on there.

Year 2 Home Learning - Monday 13th July

Good Morning Year 2!

Did you all enjoy your transition week and meeting your new teachers? I’m sure you amazed them all with your super focus, determination and enthusiasm!

I am so thrilled to be spending the final week of the year with you all. This week you will be completing some lovely activities whilst reflecting upon your time in Year 2. Let’s really go for it, have one final week of hard work and enjoy our final week as a class team together.

What have you learned this year?

Today I would like you to reflect upon everything you have learned this year. Think carefully about the different subjects and what you learned in each. Create a spider diagram showing all of your new acquired knowledge. If you’ve got a super memory (unlike Miss Woodend!), maybe you would like to create a spider diagram for each subject. Finally, I would like you to think carefully about what has been your favourite subject and why.

Don’t forget to take photographs of your spider diagrams. If you would prefer, you can create yours on Purple Mash and send it over to me when complete.

Welcome to Year 3! Friday 10th July 2020.

Good morning our Super Stars.

What a busy week we have had, it has whizzed by as we have had so much fun! It really has been lovely to start getting to know you all, we hope you have enjoyed the week too.

The work you have been producing has been fantastic, we are really pleased with you. Do you feel proud of yourself?

We hope that by getting to know us a little bit more and having a taster of Year 3 that we have eased any of those niggling worries you sometimes get in your tummy when something new is happening. We had those too, but now we all just feel eager to teach you and be back together at school. We know you will be brilliant.

Thank you to you parents for embracing the new challenges and supporting your children through this week, we really appreciate the time it has taken to email and send photos. It has been a pleasure!

The new Year 3 team

My learning Characters

Now that you have watched the videos of all the stories from our learning characters we would like you to reflect on which character you think you are already most like. Talk about this with a grown up, is it Tommy Turtle because you are eager to give anything a go? Is it Roger Robin because you work well with partners and in a team?

Then reflect on and discuss which learning character you would like to be more like in Year 3, is it Sadie Spider because you sometimes give up if you can’t do something straight away? Is it Kiki Chameleon because you would like to be better at trying different approaches to learning?

On Purple Mash there is a 2do set for you called Learning characters. I would like you to write which learning character you feel you are most like already and why, then which you aim to be more like in year 3 and why. Include an image of each animal to go alongside your writing.

Am I Year 3 ready?

Now that you are almost in the juniors we need to make sure you are ‘Junior ready’. What kind of things do juniors need to be able to do you think? Discuss this with a grown up and decide on at least one thing you would like to work towards until we get back to school in September. Here are some suggestions of things that your junior teachers would like you to be able to do.

· Tie your shoelaces yourself.

· Know your 2, 5 and 10 times tables off by heart and in a random order.

· Tell the time to the nearest 5 minutes e.g. 25 past 6, 10 to 4 etc.

· Know your number bond pairs to 10 and 20 instantly.

· Form your letters in a cursive style.

· Spell your last name and your address.

· Read and spell the Year 1 and 2 common exception words (click the button below to see them).

Once you have decided what you are going to work on make a start on it today and get practising for 45 minutes, either in one go or in small chunks of time.

Positive quote art

Each morning I like to add a positive quote to our morning board to start our day the right way. Today I would like you to have a think of a positive quote that you can make into a colourful piece of art work. We will put a new one up in our classroom each week to inspire us. Maybe your family have a mantra you try to live by, maybe a parent or grandparent says something to help you be a kind brother or sister. You could use that as your quote, or find a new one you agree with and hope our class can follow to make year 3 a happy team to be part of.

Here is mine.

If you are struggling to think of one, or find one I usually type ‘positive quotes for children’ into my search engine and get lots of good ones. Please complete this on a piece of A4 paper and keep it somewhere safe.

Welcome to Year 3! Thursday 9th June 2020

Good morning children.

We hope that you are ready for some more exciting activities for today. You have definitely been trying to show the characteristics of the different learning characters in the fantastic work you have saved on Purple Mash. We know that you will carry on doing this next year and we are so excited to watch you using them and growing your brains!

Can you think which learning characters we haven’t looked at yet? 

That’s right, today we are going to listen to stories all about Sadie Spider and Clara Clownfish. What can you do today to be more like them?

Acrostic Poem

Have you ever seen an acrostic poem?

It’s a poem of words or phrases that describes a topic word. The topic word is written vertically, and each line of the poem starts with the letters of the topic word. They are great fun to write!

Click on the button to see some poems that we have written about each other.

Your acrostic poem will be about YOU! There is a 2do set up for you in Purple Mash for you to complete your poem on.

Write your name vertically like we have done and then think about how you can describe yourself.

My successes

Earlier in the week you created a personal fact file all about yourself.

Today we would like you to tell us what you think you are really good at doing. This will also help you to then think later on in the week about what you want to get better at.

We would like you to go on Purple Mash and create a web using 2Connect (it’s set as a 2Do) of all of the things that you are good at doing. Maybe you could put a picture of you in the middle and then around the picture you can type all the things that you are good at doing. (Make sure that you connect them up to look like a spider’s web and don’t forget to save it.)

Tell us about things that you are good at when you are at home, school or at clubs. You might want to include things that you know you are getting better at too.

Pebbles

Have you managed to find a pebble (or 2)? Today we are going to decorate them for our class altar for next year. On one side of the pebble we would like you to choose a word which will help us to become more like Jesus - write this word really clearly in your best handwriting. On the other side of the pebble you can decorate it with a little picture or pattern that relates to your word or will remind others to think of Jesus.

(You might want to pick one of these words or you might want to think of your own - kind, loving, forgiving, helpful, generous, compassionate, hopeful, patient, courageous, grateful, wise, loving, faith–filled, servant, peaceful, joyful, active, curious, giving, gentle, selfless etc)

Keep your pebble really safe so that you can bring it back to school with you in September. Try to do something today which demonstrates the word that you have written on your pebble. If you chose 2 pebbles you can make another one to keep at home. Please send us a photo of your pebble so that we can see them now.

PE

Remember we need to make sure that we are keeping active so why not go for a walk, or a bike ride or a run, or do some yoga, or go on the trampoline or set up a fitness circuit with star jumps and press ups, spotty dog jumps and skipping etc. Or you could complete the PE challenge that is on the school website. You choose, but choose something different today and make sure that you have fun!

Extra optional activities - art today!

As you normally have on a Thursday there is an art activity from Mrs Curtis for you to complete. Have fun!

Have a look at IXL maths and see which units you have not completed yet for Year 2. Try to complete as many of these as you can before September.

Read for 30 minutes each day and then take a quiz on Accelerated Reader. See if you can reach your target before the end of the term. Let us know the name of your favourite author and/or your favourite book. Maybe you could even write a book review on Purple Mash.

Practise your handwriting and make sure that you can form and join all of your letters correctly in the cursive style we use in school. Click on the button below to check on the correct formation of letters.

Welcome to Year 3 Wednesday 8th July

Good morning children and welcome to another day getting ready for year 3.

We are loving the emails and Purple Mash work that you are sending to us. We are very impressed and we are getting very excited about teaching you all next year—we can’t wait! Keep up the good work! We would love to see some photos of how you are getting on, please send them to our emails.

Can you remember which learning characters we have looked at so far this week?  Today we are going to listen to stories all about Lizzie Ladybird and Kiki Chameleon. Click on the stories below to listen to them. Can you think about how you can be like them today?

“You are Precious in My Eyes” – Isaiah 43

When we get back to school we want the classroom to look lovely. Today we would like you to help us to create the letters for this display for the classroom. We would like you to draw your letter as a capital letter in bubble writing as big as you can on an A4 piece of paper. We would then like you to decorate it with patterns in shades of blue. 

When you have done this you can send us a photo of you holding your letter but we would also like you to keep this sheet somewhere really flat and safe so that you can bring it back to school with you in September so that we can put it up on the wall.

Questions

Be curious like Clara Clown Fish. The next thing we would like you to do is to have a think about next year and see if you have got any questions that you want to ask us.

Make a list of these questions and send them to us in an email so that we can answer them for you. You can use 2Email on Purple Mash to do this. Miss Edmondson’s email name is Miss Edmondson and Miss Brisco’s is LBrisco. Can you think of 5 really good questions to ask? (Remember to use a capital letter at the beginning of your question and a question mark at the end of it.)  We will then do our best to answer your questions by making a video to answer them as other children might have the same question as you.

Photo slide-show on Purple Mash

We would like you to create a slide-show in 2Publish Plus (it’s set as a 2Do) of you and your family. We would like you to take some photos - try to do this yourself if possible as we complete a photography unit in Year 3 and this would be a good start to it. Add photos of you, your parents, siblings and any one else in your wider family you want to include to the slide show and explain who each person is using labels. This will help us to recognise your parents and make it easier at the end of the day when they come to collect you when we are back at school. 

Don’t forget to save it and hand it in so we can see it.

PE

Welcome to Year 3! Tuesday 7th July 2020

Good morning Year 2 (soon to be Year 3)

We hope that you enjoyed yesterday’s activities and are ready for more today.

Hopes for next year

Yesterday we thought about faith-filled and hopeful. Today we would like you to think about what you hope for next year when you are in Year 3.

This is what the Year 3 teachers hope for:

We hope that we will all be together as a school family again sharing God’s love and growing to be more like Jesus. We hope that we can all have a wonderful year of learning where everyone is kind and generous with each other. We hope for happiness and happy times.

Login to Purple Mash and create a poster (it’s set as a 2Do) of all of your hopes for next year. (Everyone in school is doing this and we are going to use them on a display in the hall.) Make sure that you save it so that we can see what your hopes are.

Class Charter

As you know it is really important that wherever we are we behave in the best way possible. This not only keeps ourselves safe and happy, but others safe and happy too. To do this we often have to follow certain rules or guidelines to make sure that this happens.

When we get back to school in September it is really important that we make each other happy and keep each other safe.

Today we would like you to think very carefully about what we will all need to do on a daily basis around the classroom and in school to keep everyone safe and happy.

Can you think carefully about the rules/guidelines that we will all need to follow. Send us an email on Purple Mash with your suggestions for our class rules. (Go into tools and then to 2Email. You need to click on the envelope with a + sign and then write your email to us.  Miss Edmondson’s email name is Miss Edmondson and Miss Brisco’s is LBrisco.

Summer Reading Challenge

We would like you to try to join the summer reading challenge at the library this year. This is all done online this year because of Covid-19.

You can join the “Silly Squad” by pressing the button below and following the instructions.

You need to get your Mum or Dad to help you with this as they need to give their email address. You will also need to think of a username and password—remember to keep these somewhere safe and don’t share them outside of your family.

Once you have done that we would like you to click on the button below and follow the instructions for making a corner bookmark. You can make your bookmark into a monster or an owl, like the lady does on the video or you can scroll down the side of the video and see what some of the other videos show - we spotted a tiger, a Pokemon, a panda, a rabbit and even a watermelon, as well as lots more.

Use your book mark when you are reading over the summer. You could even make another one and keep it safe to use on your reading book when you get back to school in September!

PE

Welcome to Year 3! Monday 6th July 2020. Meet your new teachers.

Good morning children and welcome to “Transition Week”.

This week we are going to be doing a variety of activities that will help us all to get to know each other a little better and to get ready for when you are in Year 3.

Next year the Year 3 team will be Miss Edmondson, Miss Brisco and Miss Woodrow. We are really looking forward to working with you and helping you to learn lots of new and exciting things.

Next year we will be really thinking about how we can make our brains grow even bigger and get even better at learning. We will be focusing on all of the learning characters and thinking about what we have to do to be more like each one of them.

Each day we are going to be sharing the stories of 2 of them with you, and as the week goes on we want you to think which ones you are most like and how you can become more like the others.

We would like you to login to Purple Mash and use the “All About Me” template (it’s set as a 2Do) to create a fact file all about you.

We would like you to write and add pictures to tell us all about you.

You might want to tell us about your family and pets, your hobbies, what you like to do or what you have been doing since you were last in school etc.

Tell us about things that make you, you! Remember we are all precious in God’s eyes, but because we are all so special to Him, He made everyone of us a little bit different from everyone else. What makes you special and different from everyone else?

Please remember to save this so that we can have a look at it.

Faith-filled and Hopeful

When we return to school our virtues will be Faith-filled and Hopeful. What do these mean to you? How can you show that you are faith-filled and hopeful?

We would like you to create a piece of work (on an A4 sheet of paper) of what these mean to you.

You can show this in any way you like - you might want to decorate your work, once it is done keep it in a really safe place and keep it flat. We want you to bring it back to school in September so that we can use it then.

Pebbles

You will need a pebble for one of the activities later on in the week, so you will need to look out for one when you are out and about today. It doesn’t have to be huge but not too small either! Year 2 Home Learning Challenges - Friday 3rd July

Good Morning Year 2!

I hope you enjoy today’s activities! Today is going to be the final day of formal lessons posted by myself as next week, your new Year 3 teachers Miss Edmondson and Miss Brisco will be taking over. They will be setting some lovely activities so that they can get to know you and you can get to know them before coming back to school in September. Then, we will be using the final week of the term to reflect upon what we have learned throughout our time in Year 2 this year.

Reading

Continue reading and quizzing on books using the Accelerated Reading and Epic Reading resources.  Help can be found in the ‘How to help your child’ section of my page if you need it. 

Please note:  From the 30th June, the school’s subscription changes and the EPIC reading resource will only be available for 2 hours across the week. 

Remember, you should be reading for at least half an hour each day.  Also try to read both a range of fiction and non-fiction books. 

Enjoy Chapter 4 … Dark is Necessary

English

Day 5:

Re-watch and/or reread Chocolate Cake by Michael Rosen.

Look and listen out today for actions and vocal noises that really help to bring the poem alive! Return to look at your plan for your own version based on your chosen food. On your plan, jot down an action or noise that you too may want to include in a particular section, e.g. oooooommmm, mmmmmmm, nice. Remember, you can create your own too!

Write your own version of the poem based on your chosen food, using your plan to help you. Think carefully about how to sequence the events and phrases or noises you may want to use. You can use some of Michael Rosen’s and some of your own.
Keep re-reading back through your poem to check it makes sense.
Perform your poem for your household, making sure you too use lots of actions and noises to bring your performance alive! You may even choose to film your performance to send to me!

Year 2 Home Learning Challenges - Thursday 2nd July

Reading

Day 4:

Chocolate Cake by Michael Rosen

With an adult, read together Chocolate Cake by Michael Rosen:

Now watch and enjoy Michael Rosen performing the poem here:

Make connections with the poem and compare the two versions. Discuss – What did you think of the poem? Which version did you prefer? How were they similar/different? Did the poem remind you of anything? Have you ever craved a particular type of food like Michael craved the chocolate cake in the poem?
Your child might comment that the piece resembles a story more than a poem and that during the performance piece, Rosen does not recite the poem exactly word for word. Use this opportunity to explain that some poems are not written in verse (free verse), do not need to rhyme, can vary in performance and can sometimes resemble more like the telling of a story!

Re-read the poem together, pausing frequently and summarising what is happening in each section, e.g. First of all, Rosen explains why he likes chocolate cake so much. Then he wakes in the night thinking about the chocolate cake. After that, he sneaks downstairs to eat the remaining cake, etc.

You are now going to plan to write your own version of Chocolate Cake. First of all, you need to decide what food your poem is going to be about. Now you are going to plan your poem. Think about the sequence (order) of your poem, e.g. why you like your chosen food so much, how you might wake in the night thinking about it, the act of sneaking downstairs into the kitchen, eating and enjoying it, etc.

Create a plan similar to a story map, including each of the different sections above. Talk your planned sequence through with an adult.

Day 3:

On the Ning Nang Nong! by Spike Milligan

Read the poem 'On the Ning Nang Nong’ here:

Now, play the audio recording of the poem as read by Spike Milligan (click on the image above).

Discuss your child’s reaction to the poem – they might be surprised by the nonsense words! Some background information on Spike Milligan and his nonsense poetry can be found in the first two paragraphs here:
(Note: Please avoid clicking on + Continue Reading tab as the content may not be considered age appropriate).

Your first task today is to draw and label a picture of the Ning Nang Nong. What creatures and living things need to be included in your picture? (cows, monkeys, mice, trees). If you were to attach speech bubbles to the animals, what would they be saying? (Bong! BOO! Clang!) What other creatures or living things could you add? What might they be doing? What other noises might you hear? Remember it doesn’t matter how ridiculous your ideas are – you can be as creative as you like! Colour your picture to make it as attractive as possible.

Now write some sentences to describe your version of the Ning Nang Nong. Remember to include details about all the living creatures that live there, the noises they make and what they do. You can use some adjectives (describing words) and include your own nonsense words too if you like!
Remember to read back through your work to check for spelling and punctuation.

Day 2:

What is pink? by Christina Rossetti

Watch and listen to ‘What is Pink?’ by the Victorian poet Christina Rossetti: (click the picture below)

Listen again and pause to jot down any new words or phrases, e.g. fountain’s brink, barley bed, ripe, mellow. Discuss meanings, using a dictionary or Word Hippo to help you.

Discuss the ending of the poem. (What is orange? Why, an orange! Just an orange!) Why do you think Rossetti chose to use an orange instead of something else that might be orange in colour?

Today you are going to write your own version of What is Pink? If you are able to, go on a nature walk with an adult around your garden or local area. Act as a colour collector! What can you see that is each of the colours? What is each item/object doing? You may even wish to take a clip board or notepad out with you.

Write your poem using a similar structure to ‘What is Pink?’ using ideas collected from your walk, e.g. Start with a question: What is yellow? Answer the question: The sun is yellow: Describe the item or what it is doing: Light and bright and warm. Here is another example: What is green? The hedgerows are green, Home to nesting blackbirds and beautiful butterflies.

Remember to finish each question with a question mark. Check your spelling and try to use some noun phrases and adjectives (describing words) to help your reader to ‘see’ what you saw on your walk. Keep rehearsing your poem out loud as you write. Think carefully about how to finish your poem. You might choose to use the same finishing line as Rossetti with the orange!

Complete the following reading comprehension for Chapter 3 - ‘Dark is Fun’

Poetry Festival - This week you will have the opportunity to read, perform and enjoy some entertaining poems written by famous poets. Using your own experiences as inspiration, you’ll innovate on some of these poems, using them as models in order to write your own!

Day 1:

Scissors by Allan Ahlberg

Read the poem Scissors here:

Now play the audio recording of the poem as read by Allan Ahlberg. Make connections with the poem. Discuss – Did you enjoy the poem? What is the role of the narrator in the poem? (teacher). What does the poem remind you of? Do I (your teacher) ever sound like this?!

Rehearse reading the poem aloud, as if you are the teacher. Try to use as much expression as you can. Don’t forget to use facial expressions and gestures too! You might start your reading very calmly and then become gradually more exasperated when the scissors can’t be found!

In the poem, it is scissors that have been lost. What tends to get lost in our classroom? E.g. glue sticks, whiteboard pens, sharpeners, pen lids, rulers, jumpers etc.

Write your own version of the poem, based on what is commonly lost in our classroom. You can use a combination of lines and phrases from the original poem with your own ideas and sayings too! E.g. Nobody leave the room.
Everyone listen to me.
We had twenty brand new glue sticks this morning, And now there’s only three!
Seventeen sets of glue sticks Disappeared from sight!
Class monitors – we need you to find them, We can stop here all night!

Keep reading your poem out loud to hear the rhythm and check it makes sense. It doesn’t have to rhyme providing it includes some entertaining phrases that I (your teacher) might say! Proof-read your poem to check for spelling and punctuation. When you have finished, perform your poem to those in your household. If you are able to, record it and send it to me at school. I’d love to hear them… they’ll definitely make me smile!

Watch and listen to the story ‘Stuck’ by clicking the front cover below:

Marvel and gasp at all the things Floyd threw into the tree that got stuck! Can you remember them all at the end of the story? Look back/listen again to check.

Today you are going to write your own version of Stuck. Think about: Who will your main character be? What items will he/she throw into the tree that will get stuck? (Remember to start with everyday things, before your list becomes more imaginative! You can make your list as funny and as quirky as you like!) What will be the last item thrown that will mean the kite comes unstuck? Make a list or series of pictures to act as a plan.

You may choose to use some of Oliver Jeffers’ sentence starters, e.g.
It all began when …
The trouble REALLY began when …
In order to knock down …
You could also use or make comments as he does too, e.g.
This was getting ridiculous!
Unbelievably, that got stuck too!
I’m sure you can guess what happened!

Write your story, checking each sentence as you write. Keep going back and reading your story out loud to check you are happy with it.

Read and enjoy the opening extract from ‘The Day the Crayons Came Home’ by Drew Daywalt and illustrated by Oliver Jeffers by clicking the front cover below:

Imagine you are another item in Duncan’s pencil case, e.g. a ruler, pencil sharpener, highlighter pen, biro. Write a postcard to Duncan to add to the collection sent to him.

Think about: What job did you originally have in the pencil case? Did you enjoy your job? Might you have any memorable stories to remind Duncan of? What has happened to you since you were last with Duncan? E.g. Have you been travelling to any exciting places? What might you like to ask Duncan now?

As if you are the ruler, pencil sharpener, highlighter etc. write your postcard to Duncan.

Rehearse each sentence out loud before you write to check it makes sense. Keep reading your work as you write to check for spelling and punctuation too.

If you can, send your finished postcard to me! I could then end up with a class set of postcards from various pencil case items! I can’t wait!

Day 2:

Watch and listen to ‘Here We Are’ by clicking the front cover below: (please note, this version contains some American spellings)

Talk about the book. Ask your child: Who do you think Oliver Jeffers wrote this book for? Why do you think he wrote the book? (He wrote it for his baby son to help him make sense of the world).

It is full of key advice. Listen to the clip again and pause at key points to make a note of the advice Oliver Jeffers gives throughout the book, e.g. You have a body. Look after it, as most bits don’t grow back. Some pieces of advice are given to you; others you will have to read between the lines and discuss! Do you agree with the advice he gives? Can you think of any other advice you would like to add?

Create a poster with the book title: Here We Are in the middle. Around the outside in boxes or bubbles, write down the advice that Oliver Jeffers gives.

Colour and decorate your poster to make it as attractive as possible. Display your poster in your house – somewhere where everyone can see!

This week you will have the opportunity to enjoy some of Oliver Jeffers’ most entertaining and thought-provoking books. You’ll even be able to have a go at writing your own in a similar style!

Day 1:

Watch and listen to the story ‘How to Catch a Star’ up to 3:40 mins by clicking the front cover below:

Talk about what has happened so far in the story. Can you recall all the different attempts the boy has tried to catch a star? Can you remember why each one hasn’t worked? Look back/listen again to check.

Imagine you are the boy in the story. Your task is to write a letter to an astronomer (someone who studies stars and space) asking them for help to catch a star.

Include all the things you have tried so far and why each one hasn’t worked. You can use the joining word ‘but’ to help you join the parts of the sentence, e.g. I tried to jump up and grab a star but it was too high.

You might want to use the introductory sentence and sentence starters below to help you:
Dear Astronomer, I’m writing this letter to ask for your help in catching a star! I’ve already tried a few things but none of them have worked!
First of all I tried …
Next I had a go at …
I’ve also …
I’ve even …
I’m beginning to think I will never catch a star!
Please can you help me!
