Year 5 Weekly Blog 02.05.25- 'The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others'

May 2, 2025 Callum Cornwell

Yet another week has flown by in our shortest half term of the year. It was nice to get a full week under of belts in this summer term before another bank holiday awaits us. The weather has dominated the week with sky high temperatures. It is important to make sure children come into school with a water bottle and are all sun creamed up and roll on or spray cream can be brought into school to apply later in the day. Regardless of the extreme temperatures, the children have still thrown themselves into their learning. Whether if its been argument building in English, multiplication in maths or understanding the laws of physics in science, the children have continued to work really hard.

This week, we have been learning…

  • Maths- We have been using our new written methods of long and short multiplication to calculate numbers way beyond 12 x 12 such as 3 digit times by 1 digit numbers.

  • Science- We have continued with our focus of motion and have looked into our final scientist of this theory- Isaac Newton. We have started to look at his three laws of motion and how these apply to our day to day lives.

  • History- We have begun our new topic of Crime and Punishment this week as we look back through a 800 year journey into how both crime and punishment has changed throughout history.

  • RE- We have been discussing what is a sin in detail and relating this to our personal lives. We then progressed to how we use our conscience to prevent us from making sins. We then put our conscience to the test by analysing some moral dilemmas as we shared our own personal views on different social situations.

Conversation starters

  • RE- We have been looking into the life of Pope Francis and discovering how Pope’s are granted a coat of arms, which is a badge/emblem to represent your name. Talk to your parents and grandparents and see if your family name has a coat of arms.

  • English- We have began our discussions text topic and have been creating points of view for our school themed questions.

    Are class council sessions necessary?

Should homework be doubled or banned completely?

discuss these with your parents and see what they think.

Let’s Celebrate

Learning certificate for being enthusiastic and determined goes to Daisy: You have been super determined in our maths lessons this week- it has been incredible! From the first minute of long multiplication you have loved it and have been willing to use your break times to do more questions. This enthusiasm has also been seen in our English unit with you wanting to share your points of view during our discussion questions.

Virtue Star of the Week: Our virtues for this half term are active and curious. Our winner this week goes to Finley. You are so curious with your wisdom Finley it is amazing. You love to apply this wisdom by being so active in lessons by adding all of your existing knowledge, along with our learnt skills.
