Year 6 Weekly Blog Friday 18th September - “In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” – Matthew 5:16

September 18, 2026 Laura Woodend

What a wonderful few days we have had at Castlerigg! The children have been an absolute credit to our school and to you as parents. They approached every session and activity with such enthusiasm, maturity and positivity. They were focused and engaged throughout, listening carefully and throwing themselves into the tasks and challenges led by the fantastic Castlerigg team.

We finished our retreat with a beautiful Mass, where the children were incredibly reverent and respectful. They sang so beautifully, and it was a very special way to bring our time at Castlerigg to a close. We have been so proud of the way they have supported one another, shown kindness and compassion, and truly embraced the message of ‘Shining Our Light’ throughout the week.

Back in the classroom, we have begun reading our new class novel, Nowhere Emporium. The children have already been enjoying the mystery and excitement of the story! We have been developing our vocabulary by identifying unfamiliar words and working out their meanings from the context. We have also begun revisiting and developing our understanding of expanded noun phrases and complex sentences, including the use of subordinate clauses.

In Maths, we have continued our work on representations, particularly using bar models to represent mathematical stories and problems. We have been thinking carefully about what the information in a problem is telling us and how we can represent this visually before deciding which calculation is needed.

What a fantastic start to Year 6 we have had! We are incredibly proud of the children and everything they have achieved already.

Kidsafe Session 1 - In our Kidsafe session this week we spoke about trust and what it means to trust somebody. We also recapped our previous learning about feelings - we spoke about good feelings - happiness, excitement etc and feeling that don’t make us feel good - sad, scared, nervous. We call these feelings ‘Yucky feelings’ and we spoke about what we should do if we had these feelings. You can find more information about the session by clicking the button below.
