Year 1 Weekly Blog 9.10.26

What a busy week we have had in Year 1! We have been getting stuck into our new topics, showing off our learning and thinking about how we can make a difference to the world around us.

RE

This week in RE, we have been creating our own poems all about Creation, thinking carefully about the wonderful world God has given us. We presented these to the class with music, and the children engaged well and thoroughly enjoyed them!

On Wednesday, we also made bird feeders in a mission to take care of our shared home, which is part of our STAR Charter and Laudato Si'. The children really engaged and were passionate about our conversations on the topic of Laudato Si' and came up with some brilliant ideas about how we can look after our shared home and care for the world around us.

Our mission this week has been to think about how we can be more like Mary, linking to the month of the Rosary. As a class, we have spoken about how we can help those we love at home!

Magic moments

English

Our Supertato topic is well underway, and it has been so lovely to see the children getting into the story. We have been making predictions, thinking about what might happen next and getting into character by imagining how the characters might be feeling.

We even had a very special visit from Mr Broccoli! The children were so excited to see and interview him, and it certainly helped bring our story to life.

Things took an unexpected turn when Jackie, one of our kitchen staff, told us someone had crept in overnight and ambushed her fruit and vegetables! We investigated the crime scene and started thinking about who could be responsible. Then, after break time, disaster struck again… Evil Pea had attacked the fruit and vegetables in our very own classroom!

Maths

We have started a brand new Maths topic this week: counting numbers within 20. We have absolutely flown through it, and everyone has been a Maths superstar! We have been counting, spotting numbers and building our confidence with numbers up to 20.

Wider learning

The children have been loving our wider curriculum this week! We have been enjoying Art and History, as well as showing off all the things we have been learning with Mrs Hunter in Music. It has been lovely to see the children making links between their learning and sharing what they know.

GOING DEEPER IN CONVERSATION

A little question to get your child talking about what we have been learning in school. See where the conversation takes you!

🌍 How can we help to look after our shared community?
Can they remember some of the ideas we talked about in our Laudato Si' learning?

😊 What does Team HAP stand for?
Can they remember what each part of Team HAP means?

HRSE

We have now finished our KidSafe learning for this part of the term and have started our My Happy Mind sessions. We have been beginning to think about ourselves, getting in tune with our brain and our feelings and understanding what helps us to feel happy and ready to learn.

A Few Things to Remember:

Parents Day and book look

A reminder that there will be a Book Look at 9 am for Year 1, before Parents' Day. This is a chance for you to come into school and have a look through your child's work, so please attend if you are able to.

Our Parents' Day slots are filling up, so please make sure you have booked your appointment if you haven't already.

Charity Own Clothes Day!

We have an Own Clothes Day coming up next Friday, 16th October, which is also a charity day.

Please send your child to school in their own clothes and with a donation. We are hoping to raise enough money to feed a whole school for an entire year, which is such a brilliant cause.

Numberblocks Dress-Up Day – Friday 6th November

We have another Own Clothes Day coming up on Friday 6th November, when the children can dress up as their favourite Numberblock!

We will be having a fun day including lots of fun Maths activities, so I am sure the children will be very excited to get involved.

There are letters in the window with more information, which you are welcome to read at home time.

Harvest collections

We are starting our Harvest collection, and this year we are only collecting boxes of cereal.

If you are able to donate, please send a box of cereal to school with your child when you can. The deadline for donations is Tuesday, 20th October.

Parking

I am aware that you have already received a letter home about parking, but I just wanted to reiterate how important it is that we park sensibly and respectfully around our school.

Please remember that our school is part of a local community, and we need to be considerate of our neighbours. Even if this means parking a little further away and walking to school, please make sure that we are keeping access clear and respecting the people who live around us. Thank you for your understanding with this.

LET’S CELEBRATE

Loving and Compassionate Star

Our Star Virtue this week was Lily ⭐

Lily has really embodied our virtues of being loving and compassionate. Lily has been an absolute pleasure to have in the class and has shown these qualities in the way she treats others and approaches her school day!

Well done, Lily we are so proud of you! 🌟
