Year One Weekly Blog - 16th May

Magic moments

RE

In RE this week we discussed Pentecost. We spoke about the apostles and what happened to them during this time, how they might be feeling about this.
We then recapped all of the events we have learnt so far and sequenced these in chronological order.

English and Maths

We have all started our story writing this week, using the story maps we made we are retelling each part of the story “The Caveman Next Door”. This includes the beginning, build up, problem, resolution and ending. The children are working on using finger spaces, capital letters, punctuation and the joining words: but, and.

In Maths this week we have been delving in deeper to addition and subtraction, using the new vocabulary increasing and decreasing. The children used sequential language first, then and now to make up stories about objects and then put this into an equation. They then worked out the missing part using the first and last part of the equation.

Science and History

We have had a brilliant week again for science! We discussed deciduous and evergreen trees in our lesson and then we enjoyed a whole day of forest school activities! The children got a session to explore and play in our forest school area consisting of climbing trees, lying in the hammock (a firm favourite), making dens and spotting our growing tadpoles in the pond. We also made a start on our bug hotels, we began by painting them, before gluing them together and beginning to decorate them ready to go into our forest school. The children also made their own natural mobile using leaves feathers and pinecones. We all had the best time - including the staff!

History was focused on what made the great fire of London spread so quickly, we did some research and found 8 reasons that contributed to the fire spreading so quickly, we then had a class debate about which reasons had the greatest impact and which had the least impact.

Important information and reminders.

A reminder about our 15 day fitness challenge, we are two thirds of the way through! Please ensure yourselves and your families are sponsoring the children for their challenge so we can raise some money for our chosen charity, this money is due on Thursday 22nd May.

The phonics screening is fast approaching, only 3 weeks to go. Please keep practising at home to give your child their best chance at passing it first time.

Some dates for your diaries:

  • A library visit on Tuesday 20th May at 9:30.

  • School closes for half term on Friday 23rd May

  • Sunday 6th June - Family mass

  • School re opens on Monday 9th June

  • Phonics screening will be assessed all through the week commencing 9th June - please practise over half term to ensure your child is prepared. We will be playing lots of phonics games throughout the week to ensure they feel ready.

If you have a holiday booked or any appointments the week commencing 9th June, please let me know asap. I am making a timetable for when each child will take their test and if children are off I need to ensure they are tested whilst they are still in school. This is very important so that they are able to take their test.

  • Sports day is Tuesday 10th June at 1:30pm.

  • A visit to Ridgeway Farm on Wednesday 9th July - I need some volunteers for this, please let me know if you can make it!

  • School closes for summer Friday 18th July at 2pm.

I hope you have an enjoyable and restful weekend and look forward to seeing you on Monday morning.
