‘We Will remember them’

Laurence Binyon

Remembrance was the focus of our child led liturgy on Tuesday, with our prayer leaders choosing a range of poignant items to help focus our prayers and thoughts to those who gave themselves selflessly so that we can live our lives today. We again discussed the significance of the poppy and the children participated in our school silence with great respect and stillness - Well done Reception.
As we journey closer to Christmas, we discussed the special word ‘Advent’ in our RE lessons. We thought carefully about how we can prepare ourselves for the birth of Baby Jesus and what it feels to wait for something special. We counted the candles on the Advent Wreath and spoke about the different colours we could see.

Conversation starter

Each week we will give you a question that we would like you to think about and discuss together at home. This could be over dinner time as a family, at bedtime, on a walk or even in the car. However you choose to discuss this question is up to you, but the idea is that it will help to give an insight in to what we talk about in school, help children to understand more about themselves or others.

What are we preparing for as we journey through Advent? How can we prepare in our day to day lives?

What adventures have we been on this week?

NELI: This week we introduced our whole class NELI sessions, these sessions will help us develop our listening and attention skills. We were introduced to the story of the Gingerbread man, which we used as our text for drawing club.

Drawing Club: We drew the character the Gingerbread Man, ask your child can they remember the vocabulary and the actions at home?

The Gingerbread Man vocabulary:

Delicious: Tastes really good (action rub tummy in a circle)

Mischievous: Likes to be cheeky or cause a little bit of trouble (action finger to lip, like for shhh)

Frightened: Feeling scared (Action: Put hands on your cheeks and open your mouth in surprise)

Daring: Brave and not afraid to take risks (Action: Stand tall with hands on hips like a hero)

Escape: To get away from danger or being caught (Action: Run on the spot)

Sneaky: Doing something quietly or secretly (Action: Bend your knees slightly and tiptoe quietly)

UTW: We have reflected on Remembrance Day and why we wear a poppy.

Stay and Play: Thank you for those who came on Monday, it was a lovely afternoon.

And finally … Miss Woodend here! You may have spotted me seeing out the children on Tuesday and Wednesday this week. Since returning to school after maternity leave a couple of years ago, I have been teaching in different classes across school whilst also carrying out my role as SENCO. Mrs Gregan knows how much I love EYFS and how I have really missed being attached to a class over the past years and so will be teaching children in Reception on a Tuesday and Wednesday each week. I look forward to getting to know both you and your children more over the coming weeks; please bear with me as I get to know your faces on the door at the end of the day. My email is l.woodend@ourladystarofthesea.lancs.sch.uk.
Please feel free to copy me into any emails sent to Miss Drummond so that I can keep up to date with important information.
