Mary and Joseph’s long journey to Bethlehem from Nazareth has been the focus of our learning in RE this week. We listened to the story and discussed how we thought Mary and Joseph would have been feeling. The children have been using our role play masks to re-tell the story in their own ways; some of our friends even decided to create the path on our carpet!
Our prayer leaders this week thought really carefully about what could be included on our liturgy table to link with this week’s theme of trusting in God. It’s always lovely to see the children’s stillness when in prayer and how beautifully they sing out when speaking to God through hymns.
Each week we will give you a question that we would like you to think about and discuss together at home. This could be over dinner time as a family, at bedtime, on a walk or even in the car. However you choose to discuss this question is up to you, but the idea is that it will help to give an insight in to what we talk about in school, help children to understand more about themselves or others.
Conversation starter: Have you ever been on a long journey like Mary and Joseph? How did you feel? What did you have to prepare to take with you?
What adventures have we been on this week?
NELI: This week we started a new story ‘Panda at the beach’. We completed the tricky challenge of listening to the story without any pictures, before then sequencing pictures from in order of what happened when. The children have been blowing us away with their smart sitting and super listening!
Drawing Club: We continued our story The Gingerbread Man, focusing on the setting, our secret code was the tricky word ‘the’ some of tried writing a simple sentence: ‘the fox’ or ‘the man’. Can you practise this at home ? use your sound mat in your reading folder to help. I have put a copy below.
Ask your child can they remember the vocabulary and the actions at home?
The Gingerbread Man vocabulary:
Delicious: Tastes really good (action rub tummy in a circle)
Mischievous: Likes to be cheeky or cause a little bit of trouble (action finger to lip, like for shhh)
Frightened: Feeling scared (Action: Put hands on your cheeks and open your mouth in surprise)
Daring: Brave and not afraid to take risks (Action: Stand tall with hands on hips like a hero)
Escape: To get away from danger or being caught (Action: Run on the spot)
Sneaky: Doing something quietly or secretly (Action: Bend your knees slightly and tiptoe quietly)
UTW: We learnt about Hibernation and we have read the books: Winter Sleep and Bear snores on (ready for drawing club next week).
Home challenge: from the week beginning 1st December we will be discussing our family celebrations and traditions, please could you send me photos of any special family traditions/celebrations, it can be things you do at certain times of year (Christmas/Easter etc) or things you like to do as a family, and a bit of information if possible.
Once again thank you for those who have shared photos with me, it really helps your child learn as it is something that is relevent to them and their friends. They are so proud to share their photos with the class and it gives them confidence to talk in front of an audience.
We have been practising our Nativity this week and trying on our costumes, please keep practicing your lines in a loud clear voice, thank you.
