“Let all that you do be done in love”

1 Corinthians 16:14

The bank holiday meant that this week we have had a shorter, but still jam packed week of learning! In RE, we have continued to learn about the story of Pentecost and why it is such a special celebration for the Church. The children enjoyed listening again to the Bible story from the Acts of the Apostles, where the disciples were filled with the Holy Spirit. We brought the story to life by acting it out together, using sounds and different materials to imagine the rushing wind and the flames.

We spent time thinking about what the Holy Spirit might feel like and explored some of the symbols, such as wind and fire, that help us understand this important moment. The children gathered together around an image of Pentecost and shared a quiet time, inviting the Holy Spirit to be present in our lives.

We also reflected on how Pentecost is known as the ‘birthday of the Church’ and talked about how we can be like the disciples - showing kindness, helping others and sharing love with the people around us.

Conversation starter:

Each week we will give you a question that we would like you to think about and discuss together at home. This could be over dinner time as a family, at bedtime, on a walk or even in the car. However you choose to discuss this question is up to you, but the idea is that it will help to give an insight in to what we talk about in school, help children to understand more about themselves or others.

Watch the story of the Pentecost with your family. Can you re-tell the story as you are watching?

What adventures have we been on this week?

In English this week we continued reading and enjoying the story ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’. The children have become so confident in re-telling the story and used this knowledge to independently create their own story maps. This morning they learnt that next week, they will be busy innovating the story with their own ideas. We have some very excited children who can’t wait to incorporate their favourite foods into the story!

This week in Maths, the children have continued to learn about how numbers are made. We have been focusing on numbers 6 to 9 and thinking of them as ‘5 and a bit’. We have also explored the number 10, looking at the different ways it can be made. The children have been creating their own groups of 10 objects to help them understand what 10 looks like and feels like. We played a fun game: ‘Don’t Burn the Sausages!’, which the children really enjoyed. In this game, we dropped 10 double-sided coloured counters and counted how many ‘burnt sausages’ we could see. The children then worked out how many sausages were not burnt. I wonder if you could create some coloured counters at home and play this with your family?

In RHE this week, the children thought deeply about safe and unsafe situations outdoors and indoors with Mrs Goldstone. The children were also reminded that they can ask for help from their trusted adults when they feel unsafe and talked about who their trusted adults are.

Here is our Henri Matisse style art, which has now been proudly displayed in our classroom. I’m sure you’ll all agree, the children did a fabulous job!

Let’s Celebrate:

Whole School Virtues - Attentive and Discerning: Evelyn, you have been trying so hard to be attentive in our classroom. You are always attentive to your friends around you, helping them when they need it and telling a teacher if they need extra support. Well done, you’re such a kind friend!

Henry the Dog: India, thank you for being such a wonderful role model within our classroom. You make super choices throughout the day and listen so carefully on the carpet so that your brain can grow and grow.

Important Information and Upcoming Events:

We would like to say a heartfelt thank you for all of your kind messages and well-wishes for Miss Drummond whilst she is off school. Many of you have been asking after her and your thoughts are greatly appreciated. She will be off for a little bit longer, at least another couple of weeks. I’m sure you will understand that we are respecting her privacy at this time, and allowing her the time that she needs to get better. In the meantime, the class is being incredibly well supported by Miss Woodend and Miss Goldstone who are doing a fabulous job in ensuring that the children’s routines and learning continue as normal.

Please don’t forget that if you have any questions, concerns or celebrations, please email Miss Woodend:

Just a gentle reminder that unfortunately the children cannot play in the Reception outdoor area at the end of the day due to health and safety reasons. Thank you for your understanding.

Reception sports day is Wednesday 10th June - starting at 9:15am. Let’s keep our fingers crossed for some sunshine!

Sun Cream - Now that the weather’s getting warmer, please can you ensure that sun cream is applied before your child comes to school in the morning. It would be great if you could also provide a sun cream that can be kept in school so we can then reapply throughout the day. Please ensure that any sun creams provided have your child’s name on to avoid any mix ups.

Junk modelling resources - We’re extremely low on small cardboard boxes, toilet roll tubes, bottle tops etc for our junk modelling area and creation station. If you have any of these in your recycling bins, they would be greatly appreciated in school. Thank you in advance.

Reading books and homework - We have noticed that some children are not bringing their reading packets with them to school everyday. It is essential that they have these each day so that your child can read to an adult throughout the week.
All reading books and homework books will be kept in school on Tuesday evenings, ready to be handed out on Wednesdays. If your child does not have their reading packet with them on a Tuesday, their book may not be changed. Thank you.

  • Please can you ensure that long hair is tied back and please keep hair accessories simple, this is part of our school uniform policy.

  • Polite reminder that we are a Nut free school. Please can you bring in healthy snacks please refer to the poster for suitable snacks, we always have fruit avalible too.

  • PE
Our PE days are Wednesday (outside) and Friday (inside). On these days, children can come to school in their PE uniform and will remain in this for the day. We kindly ask that velcro trainers (white, black or navy) are worn as this allows the children to be indepoendent when taking their shoes off and putting them back on. Polite reminder that for health and safety reasons, no jewellery is to be worn on PE days. We kindly ask that this is removed at home before coming into school.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Miss Drummond, Miss Woodend, Mrs Summersall, Mrs Krol, Mrs Ely and Mrs Goldstone.
