Year 3 Weekly Blog Friday 9th January "When they saw the star, they were overjoyed" Mathew 2:10

January 9, 2026 Eleanor Lane

We have had a wonderful first week back after the Christmas break, full of learning, creativity and reflection. Our main focus this week has been Epiphany and the story of the Magi, thinking about ow the wise men followed the star to find Jesus.
The children wrote beautifully about how they can shine Jesus’ light in the world this year and these reflections will form part of a display in the school worship area. Our class prayers and liturgy have also centered on the Epiphany, celebrating the arrival of the Wise Man and the joy they brought.

RE

In Re we focused on Mathew’s Gospel and learned that it can be divided into three main parts: Jesus’ birth and early life, His teachings and parables and The Last Supper, death and ressuraction. The children were able to locate Mathew’s Gospel in the bible.
We also made peg dolls to represent the three kings, using lots of colourful wools and ribbons, making each unique.

English

We began our exciting new unit of work - The Iron Man by Ted Hughes. At the start of the week the children made predictions about the setting, characters and plot using clues from only the book cover and title. After reading the first chapter, we generated questions using our question hands. We explored the descriptive language from the text and use these phrases to draw the Iron Man.
Our author of the month is Peter Brown and our class novel is The Wild Robot - the children are already hooked.

Maths

In maths this week we have focused on shape, we have been learning about triangles, quadrilaterals, rectangles and square. We looked closely at their properties including sides, vertices and right angles. The children have done a great job identifying, describing and accurately drawing the shapes.

Science
We have started our new topic on forces and magnets, this week we have learnt about contact force.. The children sorted examples of pushes and pulls into a venn diagram and gave real-life examples from their school day. A great start to our science learning this half term.

French

We have been practising counting to six in French!Next week will continue counting up to twelve. We practised using French numbers whilst playing snakes and ladders. Tres bien Year 3!

Certificates

Olivia He. - Well done Olivia, you are a super focused learner. You think about how you can be a S.T.A.R in class to get the most from every lesson. You sit beautifully, always track the teacher, you are alert and listen carefully and you are always respectful.
