What a wonderful start to the new school term!

What a lovely start to the year! Although I was not back until Thursday, Miss Brisco and Mrs Mather were very impressed with the effort and perseverant attitudes of all children.
On Thursday, we launched our new Science topic - States of Matter by making ice-cream! We used salt to lower the melting point of the ice and measured the temperature before and after. It was very exciting! Mostly we were successful - children churned it by hand by shaking and shaking and shaking!
RHE
We have learned about our new virtues for this half term- ‘Curious and Active.’ We pondered on how love requires actions - not just words. We also discussed how curiosity is the cure for boredom and can lead to a happy, fulfilling life. Deep stuff!
In English this week, we have used all our new Year 4 writing skills to write the fairy tale of ‘The Little Match Girl.’ We have learned the tricky column method for subtraction in our maths lessons this week. Also, in RE our new topic is ‘Jesus, Our Teacher.’ We learned about how Jesus was a Jew and children studied the Jewish faith. They also retold the story of the Presentation of baby Jesus in the temple.
This term is always one of super progress and we cannot wait to see what children can do! They have made a super start.
Let’s Celebrate!
This week, our certificate winners are as follows:
Max has received a Lizzie Ladybird certificate for striving to improve in all he does and for reflecting deeply on his RE
Lily-Mae has received a Bobby Bee certificate for full participation and listening in all lessons and believing in herself to do well!
Notices
Please read the post before this one all about information for swimming lessons which begin this Monday morning. Children will undergo an initial assessment lesson this first week in the pool to place them in a group. We are very aware that not all children can swim as there has been so much disruption to swimming lessons due to Covid so there is no need to be concerned if this is the case.
Please remember to pay for our school trip on Parentpay if you have not already done so.
Have a lovely, cosy weekend with your families.
Kindest regards,
Mrs Lyons, Mrs Mather and Miss Woodrow.
‘Curiosity is the fuel for discovery, inquiry and learning.’
We have started this half term off with a bang and started our ‘Around the world in 34 days’ trip. This week we made the long journey to Antarctica.

Happy New Year to you all! It was great to have all of the children back in school on Tuesday, eager to start their second term of learning in Year 2! This week we have been thinking all about our two virtues for this term - curious and active. We thought carefully about the two words and how showing and developing the two qualities can not only help us in our learning, but can help us to grow in our faith too. Everyone set themselves a target for this term and it was super to hear such high goals and aspirations.

Happy new year to you all! The children have come back to school this week, feeling refreshed and ready to take on their learning. We have had a lovely start to the year, every single one of them bounced through the door with a big smile on their face, sharing all their news from their time away. Our two new virtues that we will be exploring and discussing in more detail this half term are Curious and Active. This week we have reflected on curiosity within RE and discussing why it is important to actively seek the answers to these questions in order to deepen our faith and learning.

Wishing you all a very happy new year. It has been so lovely to welcome the children back to school this week, despite the wind, rain and snow. The most important part of any school is the people within it. I have loved seeing the smiles and listening to all of the wonderful stories that the festive season has brought. Yesterday we walked down to church to celebrate the feast of the epiphany.

Today, Graham came from St Annes YMCA to explain all about children’s swimming lessons beginning on Monday. Please read this information carefully so you can be familiar with the procedure.
Children can come to school on Mondays wearing their PE tracksuits. They must be at school on Monday mornings at 8.30am prompt so that they can be registered and on the coach by 8.45am. Girls and any boys with a long fringe must wear swimming hats- we advise that they come to school wearing them please.
Children are not to wear their costumes under their uniform. Please bring a plastic bag containing their swimming costume, a towel and goggles if needed. (there is a letter you need to fill in - given out tomorrow if you wish your child to wear goggles)
They can not bring shampoo as there will not be time to wash hair afterwards but can bring a hairbrush.
Please make sure children do not wear any watches, jewellry or bring any money. Any armbands or floats will be provided at the pool so please do not bring any.
Graham advised that boys can wear normal swimming trunks or shorts - but not the long type bermuda shorts as these are more difficult to swim in. Also girls must not wear bikinis - a one piece swimsuit please.
It is a good idea for children to definitely bring a substantial snack to eat at breaktime as they do expend lots of energy.
Verucca socks must be worn if your child has veruccas. Any other questions, please don’t hesitate to ask.
Kind regards and Happy New Year!
Mrs Lyons

Over the next few weeks, we will be using STORYBOARD THAT to help us tell the story of Romeo and Juliet. Have a play around with it for homework. What comic strips can you create? What characters can you include? See what you can create?

At last the moment you have all been waiting for, our Christmas Nativity. We hope you enjoy it.
I’m sure after watching the children tell the story of The First Christmas there is not a dry eye in your household. All the nursery ladies (and the whole school staff) were emotional after watching it.
We must say a big ‘thank you’ to Clare and Colette who worked so hard to produce such a wonderful Nativity. Another thank you to Mrs. Gregan who built the video.
As you are aware we are saying farewell to Clare today, we are all very sad to see her go but we wish her well in her new job. She has been such a big part of nursery for such a long time she will be sadly missed.
We have two new nursery ladies joining us in January, Michelle and Justine. We are looking forward to welcoming them to Nursery.
Clare has written a message to everyone and has asked if I could share it. Here goes…
Fond farewell from Clare
I have been so blessed to be part of Our Lady’s family for over twenty years and what very happy years they have been!
To leave the nursery was such an extremely hard decision to make and took lots of prayers!
I am hoping to make the new nursery as special a place as Our Lady’s nursery is!
You will still see me at school from time to time as I will be continuing to be a school governor here at Our Lady’s.
I want to say a huge thank you to you all for the trust, kindness and for the opportunity to work with your families and your beautiful children. Each day the children give joy, love and hope. Just what we all need at the moment!
Much love and a Happy Christmas,
Clare
It just remains for us to wish everyone a Happy and Holy Christmas and a Peaceful New Year. We will see you in 2022!
Barbara, Clare, Colette, Hannah and Frances
