Year 5 Weekly Blog - Friday 2nd October "Do small acts of kindness with love." St Theresa

"God looks not only at what we say, but at what we do."

This week in our class liturgy, we reflected on Matthew 21:28-32, the Parable of the Two Sons. The Gospel taught us that actions speak louder than words. We thought about the times when we say we will do something but do not follow through, and how our words only have meaning when they are supported by our actions. The children discussed how showing kindness, helping others and keeping promises are ways of living out God's love. They left with the mission of choosing one action that shows God's love in their everyday lives. So, if your child tells you they are going to tidy their bedroom or help around the house, feel free to remind them of our class liturgy and the importance of putting their words into action!

As we begin the month of October, we remember that it is traditionally known as the Month of Mary. During this special month, Catholics are encouraged to honour Mary, the Mother of Jesus, and to grow closer to God through prayer, especially by praying the Rosary. Throughout October, the children will be taking time to pray the Rosary together in school and reflect on Mary's example of faith, love and obedience to God. If your child has a set of Rosary beads at home, we would be grateful if they could bring them into school to use during our prayer times this month. Thank you for your support in helping us grow together in faith.

Thank you to the following children this week for a beautiful class liturgy on Mary and the faith she showed in God when she willingly accepted His plan…

MAGIC MOMENTS…

What a wonderful week we have had in Year 5! The children continue to work incredibly hard and are becoming increasingly reflective about their learning across the curriculum. We have thoroughly enjoyed reading The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, where we have been exploring the character of Mr Tumnus and discussing whether he can be trusted, using evidence from the text to justify our opinions. In History, we put our drama skills to good use by imagining we were visitors to the Agora, learning about the many reasons Athenians would have gathered there. We also had great fun in indoor PE, devising gymnastic sequences on the large apparatus and showing excellent teamwork and creativity. In Maths, the children have really challenged themselves by grappling with additive and multiplicative equations involving decimals. They have shown great resilience and determination, and we are very proud of the effort they have put into their learning this week!

GOING DEEPER IN CONVERSATION

his week in Kids Safe we discussed “private parts”. We were reminded that our bodies belong to us and we are the boss of our body. No-one can touch our bodies and we do not ask to see others people’s bodies. Once we had a good reflection on this, we talked about secrets and how some secrets are good and some are not. If a secret gives us “yucky feelings” we now know that this is our body telling us to tell our trusted adult. We shared a good secret together - ask your child waht it was!

Here is the parents letter to explain the session - please read

What actions could you do that show God’s love?

LET’S CELEBRATE

Loving and Compassionate Stars

This half term we will be on the lookout for all the children that stop and notice how others are experiencing their lives, and how they feel, and why they say and believe what they do.  Ultimately, it is what makes us kind and, at a deeper level, opens up the possibility of being loving through our just and merciful actions and forgiving words. This week we thank Scarlet for always being compassionate and loving with others.
