Year 2 Homework To be handed in Monday September 15th

Dear parents welcome to the Year 2 home learning page. Each week I will set four taks to be completed. These are always:

Reading

Maths

Handwriting

Spelling

At the bottom of every homework page there is an extra button - optional learning. These are 9 additional tasks to extend learning. These tasks are linked to the curriculum covered this half term - extra learning to enjoy. These tasks are completed voluntarily but we do love to celebrate work done in class and we have a special walk to peg up this additional work.

READING

Please read with your child daily. Children are listened to and books regularly changed in school. On Wednesday this week we will complete our first Star Reader Assessment and this will give the children their new ZPD.

MATHS

We have glued into the front of each homework book your child’s password for Numbots and Purple Mash. Please establish a good routine for accessing Numbots. Please play in story mode at home. 5 minutes 3 times a week is perfect. Below is a short film to explain the importance of fluency for young mathematicians (click image to open the film). Here at our Lady’s we follow a Mastery for Maths approach to numbers and the models and images used in Numbots further reinforce this mastery and fluency.

HANDWRITING

Please watch the film - I make films to explain different aspects of our learning. This week the film teaches the formation f the Ladder letters (straight letters). At the end of the film there is a clear example of what your homework page should look like for this week.

SPELLING

This week I have taught the children how to play Saluting Soldiers. Firstly, write the words below on separate pieces of paper. Place these spellings in the middle of the floor. Now march around the room together. When you say “Attention”- you both stop retrieve a spelling and return to the table. You read your spelling and the child must spell it (homework book) and then they read theirs and you must spell it (your own paper). Now salute each other and return the spellings to the floor. Repeat finding new spellings for your partner - let them say Attention too!

This week the spellings come from an assessment carried out last week - they are Year 1 CEW (common exception words) that have not yet been fully mastered. - have fun.
