Another busy week in Year 1, with lots of brilliant learning happening across the curriculum! We have continued our Supertato adventure, have been thinking about how we can care for God’s Creation, and have had the chance to learn about a charity that will make a real difference to children in Malawi.
RE
This week, we have been thinking about how we can help to care for God’s planet, our shared home. We explored Brazil and considered how people can care for Creation there, as well as the ways we can make a difference in our own community.
Our conversations have encouraged the children to think about the little things we can all do to look after the world God has given us.
Our Children’s Liturgy was led by Jax, Lily and Nathaniel, who shared a beautiful worship with the class. Thank you to our worship leaders for helping us take time to reflect together.
Our Wednesday Word was gratitude. We talked about what we are grateful for and thought about the people, places and things that make us thankful.
Magic moments
English
Our Supertato story is getting more and more exciting! This week, we have been using our question hand to think of questions we could ask Evil Pea, imagining that we are one of the vegetables. The children have been getting into character and thinking carefully about what they would like to find out.
We have also acted out a recount of everything Supertato has done so far before writing it down. Alongside this, the children have had a go at independently writing about Evil Pea’s mischievous adventures. It has been brilliant to see them using their imaginations and putting their growing writing skills into practice.
Maths
We have continued working with numbers within 20 and have started using the language greater than and fewer than. We are building our confidence when comparing amounts and talking about which group has more or fewer objects.
Wider learning
We had our very first handwriting lesson this week, and the children were so impressive! We have been practising taking care with our letter formation and presentation. It was lovely to see everyone trying their best and taking such pride in their work. The children have also been enjoying Art, Science, Music and PE this week with Mrs Hunter and Mrs Mather. They have been keen to share what they have learnt and have continued to throw themselves into our wider curriculum.
Charity Day for Malawi
We also had an Own Clothes Day to raise money to help feed a school in Malawi for a whole year! As part of this, we learnt more about the country and explored where our fundraising money will be going. It was a great opportunity to help the children understand how their contributions can make a difference to others.
GOING DEEPER IN CONVERSATION
A little question to get your child talking about what we have been learning in school. See where the conversation takes you!
“What can we do at home or at school to care for God’s Creation?”
Can they think of ways to look after our shared home, such as caring for animals, saving water, recycling or keeping our environment clean?
A Few Reminders:
Parents Day and book look
A reminder that there will be a Book Look at 9 am for Year 1, before Parents' Day. This is a chance for you to come into school and have a look through your child's work, so please attend if you are able to.
Our Parents' Day slots are filling up, so please make sure you have booked your appointment if you haven't already.
Numberblocks Dress-Up Day – Friday 6th November
We have another Own Clothes Day coming up on Friday 6th November, when the children can dress up as their favourite Numberblock!
We will be having a fun day including lots of fun Maths activities, so I am sure the children will be very excited to get involved.
There are letters in the window with more information, which you are welcome to read at home time.
Harvest collections
We are still collecting our Harvest donations, and this year we are collecting only boxes of cereal.
If you are able to donate, please send a box of cereal to school with your child when you can. The deadline for donations is Tuesday, 20th October.
Homework
Homework went out a little later than planned this week, so the children will have until Thursday, 22nd October, to complete it. Thank you for your flexibility!
Show and tell:
Show and Tell will now take place on Friday afternoons. Children are welcome to bring something in to share with the class, but please remember that toys should be left at home. We look forward to hearing all about the things the children would like to share!
LET’S CELEBRATE
Loving and Compassionate Star
Our Star Virtue this week was Annie⭐
Annie has been showing our virtues of being loving and compassionate. She has been a pleasure to have in the class and has shown these qualities through their kindness and care for others, in the classroom and on the playground.
Well done Annie, we are so proud of you! 🌟
