To start the week, the children were so excited to have their first time of the big stage! We began our Nativity practise by saying our speaking parts in the hall, using our loud, strong voices. I think we are in for a real treat this year! Throughout the week, we have also met with our Nursery friends for singing practise, which again, has sounded absolutely wonderful. The children are singing with such enthusiasm! Inside the classroom we have been kept very busy. We received a letter from the police regarding the big, bad, wolf. Thankfully, they have managed to capture him, however, when they have spent time talking to him, it is clear that he is still not sorry for what he did to the three little pigs. After having received this letter, the children decided that they would get busy to work and have made brilliant invitations for the wolf. We are hoping he might visit us so that we can help teach him how to be kind to others. 

Certificates

Co-operative Louis for… thinking carefully and helping those around you Louis. We have really noticed an improvement in your self control. This is fantastic to see, particularly during your learning and when playing with your friends. Well done Louis, we are so proud of you.

Focused Lorenzo for … concentrating so carefully this week! We have been very impressed with how carefully you have been listening during our class discussions. Miss Neves and I have really noticed your effort towards being focused and could not be more proud of you! Well done Lorenzo.

Phonics

This week we have learnt the sounds:

qu, x, ng and nk . Please practise saying, hearing, reading and writing these sounds. Next week we will focus on the high frequency word, ‘to’. How many times can you find this word in your favourite story book?

Maths

We have focused our vocabulary and have been exploring weight. We have been using balancing scales to compare the weight of objects. Our new maths vocabulary is: heavy, heavier, heaviest, light, lighter, lightest, same as, equal.

RE

We have been exploring our gifts from God. And how we can use our gifts to help others, particularly when somebody is feeling upset. We listened to the story of a little boy who was feeling rather grumpy. Reception thought of many wonderful ways they could cheer him up and help him to feel special.

Nativity parts

Thank you for spending time at home practising your Nativity parts, please continue to do so as next week Nativity practise will rev up as we prepare for our performances the following week.

Pyjama Day and Advent Alms giving

Last Friday the children came to nursery dressed in their pyjamas and donated £1 for Brian House Hospice. I am sure you will agree this is a worthy cause. We are hoping to continue to build this fundraising total as part of our Advent Alms giving as we donate all Foundation and KS1 Nativity ticket sales along with the collection at the back of church during KS2 Reflection.

We are hopeful that we will reach that magic £1,000 with your help!

Double maths this week - please complete the double sided number bonds sheet and keep practising your number bonds to 10 20 and 100 at every opportunity.

Also please learn your three times tables for next week - you could use the’Help section’ on our page to follow the process as we used for the 2,s 5,s and 10,s. You could also play the class Bingo game we learned at curriculum evening - and in class!Don’t forget to use facts you already know - so for example, if you know 5 x 3 = 15 then you know you just need to add 3 to this to get 6 x 3. Also if you know 3 x 5 you automatically know 5 x 3.

Reading

We will be taking our Star reader assessments next week. This assessment may move our ZPD, it also gives me an overview of each child highlighting those on track and anyone who needs more support for reading. Reading at home is so important, some children need to read with an adult share the text and discuss others may read independently too but all children should still be read to. The richness of a shared novel has the greatest impact- no lesson can match it.

A whole lot of competitive fun!

This morning, the Year 3 sport club had great fun (and a little bit of maths along the way). The children were tasked with moving in different ways to collect the balls in the middle of the hoop, however, the balls all had different values. The children had to be strategic in their collection to make sure that their team collected the highest value balls! The children worked really well together and support each other constantly.

READING- Please make sure you are reading to an adult for at least 20 minutes EVERY night and get them to ask you questions about the text, I can’t stress how important this is! Are you quizzing regularly enough? Are you reading books that you enjoy? Are you challenging yourselves with the books you are choosing?

SPELLING- This week we have spellings from the Year 3 and 4 spelling list of tricky words. The expectation is by the end of Year 4 children will be able to read, spell and use all of these words within their writing. so please have a go at practicing these in fun, creative and different ways- we would love to see all the different ways you try to learn them.

ENGLISH- As you know we have been learning all about a particular type of species of Dragon ‘The Manchester Ridge-Back’. Unfortunately this species are becoming rare (close to extinction) as people are mistaken them for a more viscous type of dragon. We MUST protect the Manchester Ridge Back! Help us by creating a poster on the sheet of paper provided urging people to protect this dragon- you will need to use pictures to attract people to look at it, explain WHY they need protecting and what people can do to help. These will then be displayed in class.

History - Thinking about the skills and the information needed to complete the newspaper report on the Battle of Bosworth, can you create a newspaper report on the execution of Anne Boleyn.

We have had a week of real Science discoveries! Our trip to UCLAN was amazing - and we were blown away with some of the children’s questions to the tutors! Children learned all about states of matter and even about acid, alkali and neutral substances. Have a look below - they were so engaged and of course loved the products they made!

We have also been examining changes in temperature in our Science lessons in class. We have even taken the temperature of our classroom throughout the day to look at how it changes!Children have produced their own movies all about solids, liquids and gases and have evaluated their movie making skills. Today they learned how to make animations in flipbook form and on purple mash - they can make one for homework too!

Thanks so much for all your kind donations today for Children in Need Day. All proceeds will go to Brian House. It was nice to meet so many new friends today - especially a very hard-working shark!!

This week our Yoga stars were Olivia and Clayton for super yoga poses. Our Swimming stars were Jacob and Lily L.

A Lizzie Ladybird certificate went to Aya for improving so much this last few weeks in all she does. A Bobby Bee certificate went to Lily for always being so enthusiastic and learning so keenly. A Sadie Spider certificate went to Megan for trying so hard and being resilient if something is tricky. I am so lucky to have such a class of great learners!

Please come along to our wonderful curriculum evening on Thursday night between 6pm-8pm. Our school will be full of maths activities which you can do together - a celebration of all things maths! Wow what a day today! Thank you so much for helping us raise money for such a worth cause- Brian House. The other bonus is that we got to spend the day in our PJ’s with our friends. Today we have been ‘dragon pet-shop owners’, discussing and writing all about the best way to look after a dragon- there are some definitely interesting ideas! All week this week, we have been learning about a particular type of dragon that I am sure you have heard all about at home and some of you may have even seen … The Manchester Ridge-back. The children have worked hard to story map, learn actions and can now recite the non-chronological report all about this dragon. See if the children can tell you any fascinating facts about it, if they haven’t already, as there is quite a buzz in the classroom.

In Maths this week, we have started to count up in multiples 4’s and 8’s, looking at the mathematical connection. We have also started addition, firstly looking at the whole, part model and how calculations are drawn from this representation. They have made an excellent start!

We have been practicing our assembly this week, and the children have made a really good start at learning their lines, so thank you. Could you please make sure you practice this weekend, focusing now on expression and definitely volume with them. We have also been practicing the song every day, if you have time also to go over the song with them to make sure they know it, it would be much appreciated.
