Year 4 homework to be handed in on Thursday 13th November

November 6, 2025 angela lyons

Building a good vocabulary

Each week, I will put on the new words we have learned the meaning to in our lessons. Give each other little vocabulary quizzes! For example,

Which word means 1000g?

Which word means squashed and cramped together?

You do not need to write these down. Instead, use this to really consolidate and grow the bank of words that you understand the meaning of.

Assembly Parts

Your child will bring home their assembly part - it is stuck onto pink card. Please encourage them to learn this off by heart, by next week. Try not to lose it!

Spelling

Group 1 spellers.

We have learned about words which have a y in the middle, to represent the i sound. Here are some below. Use our TRIANGLE WORDS technique to create a page in your homework book to learn these spellings off by heart.

gym, myth, symbol, hymn, Egypt, pyramid, lyrics, mystery, mysterious, system, typical, hysterical.

All we do is write one letter, then keep adding one letter on each new line. Here is an example:

Group 2 Spellers

  1. Can you also use the TRIANGLE WORDS strategy above on your 6 spellings as follows:

out new old one more make

2. Now do a word collection in your homework books for the UR grapheme which you practised with Miss Slater.

Here are 4 to get you started -

turn

burn

purse

nurse

MATHS

This week, practice the 9x table. What little tricks do you know for remembering it?

Seed Dispersal

After the holidays, we will be writing about how different seeds disperse. If you go on a walk this holiday and want to collect and bring in any of the following seeds or seed heads, we can make a collection in class and study them to write about:

sycamore, poppy, conker, acorn, berries, gorse, burdock

English

To help us remember to punctuate sentences, please write this paragraph below in your best handwriting. It is not punctuated at all! This makes it tricky to read.

I would like you to see if you can find all capital letters, full stops and any other punctuation that is needed.

in addition the lion is my only friend in this world it is certain that I have been alone my whole life with no companions mother is often sick and cannot play with me don’t you realise that I would have loved to go to school just imagine how you would feel if you had nobody to talk to all day now I finally have this beautiful lion to spend time with how can you take him away from me

MATHS

    b) 11 - 9 =

In Homework Year 4

Year 4 homework to be handed in on Thursday 25th September

September 18, 2025 angela lyons

In Year 4, homework is given out on Friday and needs to be in for the following Thursday.

SPELLING

This week, we will rehearse these words that we are sometimes spelling incorrectly. CAN YOU SPOT IN EACH WORD THAT REALLY IT IS MADE OUT OF TWO WORDS?.

Make a poster of these 8 words in your homework book. Use colours to write the two parts of the word out. So for example for everybody - every may be in blue and body in red.

TOP TIP! Make sure you spell every correctly each time - a common mistake is to spell it evry! Some people spell any as eny! Don’t fall into the trap!

everyone everywhere everything everybody anyone anywhere anything anybody

READING

Each night - 20 minutes

MATHS

  1. Go on TT rockstars in the garage.

  2. This week, we have practiced writing COLUMN ADDITION on squared paper. Children have learned how to set these out correctly and space them. They have learned how to regroup in the tens and the ones when needed.

Children, please complete the following calculations as column addition on the squared paper I have provided. Only write one number in every square and use a nice, sharp pencil so you can rub out if needed.

    a) 234 + 43=

    b) 363 + 105=

    c) 437 +228=

    d) 53 +83=

    e) 71 +94=

    f) 384 + 181=

    g) 193 + 316=

    h) 549 + 271 =

    i) 628 + 76 =

(Children should now be able to recall calculations like 9+6 and 7+8 automatically now as they are solving the column additions. Parents, if you notice children struggling with these calculations that bridge over ten, please practise these on journeys whenever possible - in car, to the shops etc Rather than trying to add on fingers, encourage your child to use what they know already:)

For example 7+8 we know 7+7=14 so 7+8 must be one more

9+6 would be 9+1 to make ten then add 5 left to make 15

    5+8 think 5+5+3

Year 4 homework for over the half term holidays

May 22, 2025 angela lyons

No formal homework as such over the holidays but it would be really good if you could focus on your times tables and read a good book ready to quiz when you return

I have handed out some times tables tests that we do in class where you could ask someone to time you and then mark them together (as we do in class)

I will not be collecting these in to mark - it is for you to use them to help you. You also have the songs below if there are still some you are shaky on. Of course, you can work on TTrockstars to increase your rock star status and will set you some ‘Beat the teacher’ challenges on Rockslam.

Year 4 homework to be completed over the Easter holidays

April 10, 2025 angela lyons

Maths

You have a small maths sheet to complete on column addition and subtraction - YOU WILL NOT HAVE YOUR HOMEWORK BOOKS - they are in class.

Going for Gold!

Over the holidays, it is my greatest wish that we turn our heatmaps green if we have not already done so.

We have learned all common multiplication facts and so many of you know them instantly. One thing that has really helped us to learn them is the times tables songs we have learned along the way. We decided as a class to collate these into a video so you can practise our songs at home - especially those of you still struggling to remember those key facts.

Everybody - please practise your TT rockstars every day over Easter - and practise singing along to these songs with your class friends to help the times tables sink in.

In Homework Year 4

Spelling

This week we have our normal spelling sheets, with our rule to practise too.

Maths

It is time to really ramp up the times tables practice - You should all be going on TT Rockstars DAILY at home. If you have not yet got a green heatmap - this should be something you are endeavouring to do and work on at home.

In TT Rockstars, there is a section called SOUNDCHECK. This emulates the official times tables test children will get in June. Please practise soundcheck once a day at least. Also keep working to keep the heatmaps green.

In multi-player mode there is ROCKSLAM. I keep setting a challenge for children to beat me - they like that! This keeps things fresh and exciting. They can also challenge each other.

STUDIO is where they can work on their rock status -we already have some rock legends!
