Year 2 Weekly Blog - 'Alleluia, how the people cheer and palm leaves rustle as the King draws near'

This week has been an incredibly busy one! I have been blown away by how well the children have learnt their lines for our Easter assembly and I know how excited they are to perform for you on Monday. We had our final dress rehearsal this morning and the children performed with great confidence and passion - I can’t wait for you to join us in school on Monday to see just how much they’ve grown! Please keep practising saying those lines clearly and loudly over the weekend!

In amongst the practising, we’ve also completed lots of great learning. In English, we brainstormed lots of creative ideas for who else Plop the baby barn owl could meet in the story and what they would teach him about the dark. I was amazed by the children ideas; from the tooth fairy to trick or treaters, and angels to wizards, I can’t wait to see how the children will use their ideas to write their chapters next week.

In Maths the children have learnt all about halves and quarters. They are able to confidently recognise these in shapes and are beginning to develop strategies to help them when finding fractions of number. We’ve been using pizza and cake representations to help us with our learning and the children had a bit of a light bulb moment this week - the larger the denominator of the fraction, the smaller the equal part!

In Outdoor PE we have continued to develop our bat and ball skills. We started by working in partners to pass a shuttlecock to one another before moving onto a tennis ball. I have noticed HUGE progress in both the children’s catching skills and their ability to strike successfully using a racket - well done Year 2!

Yesterday afternoon, we enjoyed another child-led worship centered all-around gratitude. The group shared the story of Jairus’ daughter before asking their peers if they had ever felt grateful. Thank you, children, it was such a lovely worship. I’ve also attached photographs of last week’s child-led worship below.

Let’s Celebrate

What a Focused Cooper Crab you have been this week Louis!  You have tried really hard to manage your distractions in every lesson and have listened really carefully to the learning taking place.  It’s been wonderful to see you taking ownership of your own choices and really wanting to please by making positive choices within our classroom.  Well done!

Wow Lorenzo – you have been such an Enthusiastic Bobby Bee this week!  You have really thrown yourself into your learning and have kept going and going when things have been a little tough.  You have been an absolute delight in our assembly rehearsals, really trying your best to stay focused and singing out with great enthusiasm and passion.  Thank you Lorenzo!

Notices

As you know, up to two people from each child’s family are able to come and watch the children perform on Monday 4th April at 9:10am. The gate at the school entrance will open just after 9am for you to take your seats. Please complete the form below so that we know how many chairs to put out in the hall. Thank you.

Easter Assembly Attendance

Due to other assembly practises taking place in the hall, indoor PE will not be taking place on Monday and Tuesday. Please can all children come to school in their full uniforms on Monday ready for our assembly, but if your child is a disciple, please could they have their PE shorts with them.

Year 2 trip to ‘Bring Yer Wellies’ - On Thursday 12th May, Year 2 will be going on a trip to Bring Yer Wellies in Preston. Here we will be planting different seeds and learning all about plant growth. The cost of the trip is £16, to be made via ParentPay. More information regarding the trip will be given after the Easter holidays.

Well done to Harcourt and Plessington for being awarded the most learning points across the school this term. You can come to school wearing your house colours/own clothes on Friday.

School closes for the Easter holidays at 2pm for Harcourt and Marsden and 2:10pm for Plessington and Bamber.

Have a lovely weekend.
God Bless.

Year 6 Weekly Home Learning - Wednesday 30th March 2022

With just 5 and a half weeks until the end of year assessments, we have ramped up learning in class. The children are very clear about what they need to do and the areas that they need to develop. I have updated the ‘How to Help Your Child’ button on the Year 6 page. There are lots of resources for the children to access as well as the revision boxes that are in the classroom.

Maths - Please complete the reasoning paper that I sent you home for homework. There is a good mixture of questions in the booklet that will challenge your reasoning. Read the question carefully!

GPS - Have a go at the GPS paper that I have sent you home for homework. I will also be giving you a random spelling test based on the spelling rules that I sent you home in your revision folders.

Geography - Edinburgh

Imagine that you have visited Edinburgh for the weekend. Write a postcard back home telling them about all of the wonderful things that you have been up to!

Vision Screening

Dear Parents,

Schools in Lancashire are being asked to take part in the National Vision Screening programme. At Our Lady’s this will take place with Reception children on Tuesday 5th April. Below is further information for you to read. If you are happy for your child to take part in the programme next week you need to take no further action. However, if you would like to opt out please see the button at the end of this blog and return the signed letter to school.

We send our love to all those poorly children at home and wish you all a quick recovery. Children, we are all missing you!

Vision Screening in Lancashire Schools

What is vision screening?

Vision screening is when a specially trained person checks your child’s vision to make sure they can see without any problems. The aim of the service is to detect reduced vision early, to reduce the risk of defects developing into visual impairments if left untreated.

What is involved with vision screening?

Your child’s vision will be assessed using a letter matching test. The test is fun and your child does not need to know their letters to complete it. During the test a pair of glasses with one eye blanked out will be used or an eye patch will be placed over one eye to test each eye separately. The test is entirely safe and children enjoy playing the letter matching game. It takes approximately five minutes and the screener is trained to make this fun for the child.

Who does the screening?

Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust provide specially trained vision screeners go to every school in Lancashire and see children in the reception class. As NHS staff they are all DBS checked, (Disclosure and Barring Service. This check was previously known as CRB, Criminal Records Bureau).

Does my child have to be screened?

No. However, we strongly recommend that your child is screened for vision defects; however you have the right to decline the assessment. No screening will take place without your consent. A letter will be sent home with your child informing you about the screening; this is an Opt-out letter and only needs to be returned if you do not wish for your child to be tested. If you do not receive a letter please ring the school for a copy.

What happens if my child is absent on the day of screening?

An appointment will be offered at a local health centre for your child to be tested. A member of the vision screening team will send an appointment letter to your home address for this.

Services provided by:

East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust and Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

What will happen during the vision screening assessment?

Your child’s vision will be assessed using a letter matching test. The test is fun and your child does not need to know their letters to complete it. During the test a pair of glasses with one eye blanked out will be used or an eye patch will be placed over one eye to test each eye separately. The test is entirely safe and children enjoy playing the letter matching game. It takes approximately five minutes and the screener is trained to make this fun for the child.

What happens if my child passes the assessment?

If your child passes you will receive a letter informing you of the result. This means that at the moment their vision in both eyes is as expected for their age. This result does not rule out potential future eye problems. Children’s eyes change as they grow so if you have any concerns about your child’s eyes at any stage in the future, contact your local optometrist (optician) or GP.

What happens if my child does not pass the assessment?

If your child does not pass, you will receive a letter informing you of the result. Your child will be referred to your local orthoptic department and you will receive a letter in the next few weeks from the hospital inviting you to an appointment for further tests.

It is important to attend the appointment for further tests to confirm your child’s results and if treatment is required. Reduced vision may be caused by the child needing glasses or a turn in the eye (squint). Glasses and/or eye patches may be recommended as treatment for these problems. These tests could be carried out by an Orthoptist, who manage visual disorders related to eye development or misalignment, an Optometrist who can prescribe glasses if required, or an Ophthalmologist, depending on the results of the screening.

Sometimes a child does not pass the screening because they are tired or not able to concentrate on the day of screening. If the vision screener feels this may be the case on the day, you will be asked to attend another appointment for a recheck.

Such glorious weather......

The fabulous weather this week has meant that we have been able to take full advantage of the garden. You may have noticed the building works happening on the top part of the garden. We are having a new (even bigger) made, new planting boxes and a stage for budding West End performers! Hopefully it will be completed by the end of next week, we are all very excited.

Thank you for your continued support of our Lenten appeal. To date we have collected £115.06! Wow that’s fantastic, thank your so much for your generosity.

It was lovely to see some of our families face to face at the Key Person meetings this week. Thank you for all your kind words in support of nursery, it is really appreciated. Michelle meetings are on Monday, if you haven’t managed to book an appointment yet just drop her an email. I also will look forward to catching up with you.

Key Persons Blog

Another exciting week in nursery with lots of outdoor play whilst the sun is shining. We have continued to enjoy our beach area with all the lovely new sand we had delivered. We have also got a bit wet with our outdoor water play area but we soon dried off in the warm weather.

We’ve continued to practice our fundamental movement skills with hopping, jumping, running and throwing and catching. This lovely weather has enabled us to enjoy our Cafod ‘Walk for Hunger’ around the school field. We’ve even had snack times outside enjoying the sunshine.

The children have continued to explore the fantasy/mythical theme and have made their own magic wands so be careful you don’t get turned into a frog and listen out for spells being cast by your little budding wizards and witches.

The children have also made their own dragon egg. We will be sending them home next week for them to take care of. Our eggs at nursery have hatched and we now have baby dragons somewhere in the garden!

This week we have introduced a new Number Block friend ‘number 6’. We have been practicing number recognition skills through playing games such as snakes and ladders and throwing a giant dice. Why not have a games evening at home, it’s great fun ( and sometimes rather competitive!).

Click here to watch the Number 6 video.

All the children have been very busy making some wonderful treats for a very special day on Sunday. It has been lovely to hear why the children love their mummies so much, enjoy your weekend.

Colette, Hannah, Justine, Michelle and Frances

Some of our parents have been asking about letter formation. I have sent home this week a Read, Write Inc letter formation sheet to help you at home. If you haven’t received it click on the button below.

Letter formation

As promised last week here’s a little teaser for the children, Where is Fairy Love? I wonder if they can tell you where in nursery or school she is?

Worship

This week we will be continuing our Easter Journey. click on the button below to read the story at home.

We have also started to learn the Hail Mary. One of our friends bought us a beautiful book to help us remember the words. It is called ‘Hail Mary. A book of Prayer’, illustrated by Julianna Swaney.

The Easter Story

This week when we visited the chapel it was truly joyous. We all sang like angels whilst Colette played the guitar. It is so moving to see the children’s faces as they sing. Next week we will try to take pictures but we really don’t want to spoil the moment.

Next week we have lots of Easter activities planned including eating hot cross buns…mmmmmmm. Watch this space.

Lastly, I have it on good authority that the weather is going to be splendid this weekend so enjoy it and have some family fun!

Stay safe

Barbara
