Happy Monday everyone!

I hope everyone has enjoyed the sunshine and that you are taking good care of each other. A big well done to Abi, Jess and James who have met their reading targets, great work children! There are some other children on percentages of 80s and 90s, so you could soon be there too - let us know when you have reached your target and we can celebrate and set you some new ones. Keep up that great reading. Where are you going to sit to read today? Does anyone have any recommendations of books to share with the rest of the class? English

This week’s English follows on from last week so I hope that you enjoyed the story of the House Haunting!! (If you didn’t get chance to read it all don’t worry just look on last week’s learning pages and have a read. I love doing this story - it’s so exciting and a great one to use to write our own stories from.)

Yes, you’ve guessed it we are going to be following the pattern of the story we have read and making up our own stories chapter by chapter over the week. So here goes!!!

Task 1 Last Monday we wrote an opening (Chapter 1) for the story of the House Haunting. Re -read the chapter (click on the button above) and then re-read your chapter. You are going to purple pen (or pick a different colour if you don’t have a purple one) your work and improve on it. Use the prompts that I have given you to help. Check each one separately and purple pen your corrections.

• Does your chapter start with some speech? Have you used “ “ to show the speech? Have you said who is speaking - use a word that is better than “said”. Have you added a bit of description in with the speech sentence to show how it was said/what they were doing as they were speaking?

• Does your chapter have great description? How have you described things? Make sure that you really think carefully about how to describe the house. Does it sound scary? Does it sound like it is abandoned and overgrown?

• Have you used powerful verbs? Go through your writing carefully and check - can you change any of the verbs into more powerful ones?

• Have you checked your spellings? Look carefully and make sure that you have thought about every word. Correct any spelling mistakes that you have made.

• Have you checked for punctuation? Read every sentence carefully. Have you included all of the punctuation that is needed? CL FS ? “ “ , ! etc. Make sure that you have used CL for names. Check and correct.

Once you have checked your work, read it again. Does it sound any better now? (I’m sure it does!!) Practise reading it through and then read it to someone else. What do they think about it?

Task 2 Have you got any unanswered questions? Can you answer them having read all of the story? Go back to your questions and answer them if you can.

Task 3 Spellings for this week. Practise your spellings for this week. Have a look at the fun ways we talked about to learn your spellings and see if you can do one of these. Then have a go at writing your spellings in a sentence. Can you write any sentences using the present perfect tense?

Year 3 Friday 24th April Learning from Home Daily Challenges

Reading

It is so important that you are reading each day and taking your quizzes. So try to fit in 30 minutes reading - choose a quiet, comfy place and dive into a book. (or an ebook)

Maths

I hope your Sumdog challenge went well, I can see that lots of people got really high scores on their 3 times tables one. Today I would you to have a go at this addition and subtraction quiz, we use these in school after a topic has finished. As we finished addition and subtraction before the Easter break I would like you to have a go at it, do not worry if you haven’t retained some of these strategies and need help from a grown up. Use drawings, practical equipment or anything else you want - there are some tricky questions on here which will really get that brain thinking!

English

Today is the final part of our House Haunting story. Have you managed to answer any of your questions yet or do you keep asking new ones? What do you think is going to happen today? Click on the button to find out the final bit of the story…

Task 1 Something to talk about…

What did you think about the story?

Did the author make you want to read more? What were your favourite bits? Why?

Task 2 Imagine that you are one of the boys. Write some sentences in the present perfect tense. Remember to write in the first person ( I, me, my, we).

Don’t forget to use adjectives and powerful verbs to create a good picture for the reader.

Remember beautiful joined up handwriting please and don’t forget to use correct punctuation please.

Year 3 Learning from Home Thursday 23rd April

Some people might not have been able to get on the internet yesterday - don’t panic, we totally understand. Those children working in school couldn’t get on either. Please don’t worry but please make sure that you do yesterday’s work (Maths and English) before you do today’s work - otherwise some of it won’t make any sense!!! Don’t worry if you don’t get through it all by Friday!

Reading

How are you getting on with your reading? Have you managed to quiz? Are you near to your target yet?

30 minutes of lovely reading each day is sooooooo relaxing. I’ve really enjoyed having time to get lost in a good book. My favourite place is relaxing on my bed. Where’s yours? Maybe you could send us a photo.

Can you remember where we left off yesterday? Take a moment to think what happened. Think about the characters and how they were feeling yesterday.

Task 1 Have you answered any of your earlier questions? What are you thinking now? Do you have any new questions? Write your new questions in your book. (Remember punctuation and joined handwriting please)

Task 2 What do you think Jack's Mum said to the boys when she saw them? What did the boys say to Jack’s Mum?

Write a short conversation of what they might have said.

Remember to include " " and to say who said it. Use words instead of said. (eg called, whispered, hollered, cried, sobbed, muttered.) Think carefully about the “said words” that you chose because it helps to create the picture of what is happening.

Can you add any other detail in your conversation to create an even better picture of what is happening? Try to show and action or how they are feeling.

eg. “Yes, we’re here!” Jack hollered at the top of his voice, standing up and stumbling towards the door.

For your science lesson this week, Mrs Nel says…

Wow! Can you believe how quickly everything is growing outdoors at the moment? I wonder how plants manage to survive and grow? I would like you to research the parts of a flowering plant…

Draw a labelled diagram of a flowering plant and then write a detailed description of the function of each part. ( You might want to look in a book/ an ebook or on the internet to help you with this part.)

If you are lucky to have your own garden your family may have had to start removing weeds. If there is a weed that has been removed with roots etc intact put it aside and observe what happens to it over the next week. Record what you notice each day and at the end of the week look over all your observations. Can you write an explanation of why you think any changes may have occurred? What do these changes tell you about the plants needs to grow and survive?

It is always wonderful to enjoy nature and now is your chance to be creative. Write a poem, rap or even a riddle about the parts of a plant and their functions. Keep safe, have fun outdoors and remember to always be curious about what you see.

Don’t forget to keep watching out for how the plants, flowers and trees are changing as you go on your walks.

Year 3 Tuesday 21st April - Home learning challenges

Good morning! We hope that you are ready for today’s Learning from Home challenges. Have you spotted this week’s picture theme? We hope that you are staying healthy and remembering to eat your fruit. Which fruit do you think we will pick tomorrow????

Reading

Yesterday we left the boys at the door of the house - it “swung open with hardly a squeak.” Do you think they will go in? Read chapter 2 to find out…

Task 1 Read though the chapter again and look carefully for any adverbs that the author has used. Look again and spot any powerful verbs. Look one more time and look how the author has used description to describe.

Task 2 What are you thinking now? What are you wondering about? Have you got any new questions that you would like to ask? Write your new questions? (Remember to punctuated them correctly.) Can you answer any of you questions from yesterday?

Task 3 Using adverbs (eg cautiously, excitedly, suddenly and any others that you want to add), write some exciting sentences to describe what happened in the next chapter. (You don’t have to write this chapter, unless you have been inspired to do so.) Make your sentences really exciting - grab the reader and make them want to know more!)

Geography

This week I would like you to focus on learning more about our own country. Remember on 15.4.2020 I set the task of completing the ‘My country snapshot’ about another European country? This week I would like you to find out the same things about England so that you can make comparisons between England and your chosen country.

You can use the ‘My country snapshot’ format again (just click the button below) or set it out however you want.

Once you have found out the information about England I would like you to list 3 similarities and 3 differences. Which place do you think you would prefer to live in?

The Magic Box

Following on from all of your lovely poetry last week we thought that you might like to create your own magic box of things. You can either collect together and put your magical things in a magic box or you can draw a magic box and draw all of your magical things in it.

What will you put in your magic box? Use your imagination and be creative! Don’t forget to send us your lovely photos please.

English

This week we are going to be looking at the story The House Haunting. We will be adding a bit more of the story each day and asking you to do the activities to go with it. It gets quite exciting so don’t miss out on any of the chapters!

Read chapter 1 of The House Haunting

Task 1 What are you now thinking and wondering about? What questions would you now like to ask?

Write your questions remembering to use correct punctuation. Start your questions in different ways.

Task 2 Look carefully at the vocabulary that the author has used. Are there any words that you are not sure about? Find out what they mean. Are there any words or descriptive phrases that you really like? Maybe you could magpie these or add to them when you write your story opening.

Task 3 Look at how the author has started the story. Starting with a warning not to go near the house because it’s dangerous makes you want to find out why it’s dangerous. Straight away it makes you want to read more. It grabs your interest. The author then goes on to describe what the boys go past as they leave home and when they get to the house the author describes in great detail what it is like outside the house. The author starts at the gate and works their way up to the door - the door opens!!!! You are left at a really exciting cliff hanger. Do you go in or not??????

We would like you to follow the pattern used by the author, starting with a warning, (Remember “…” when people speak) and write your own story opening (chapter 1). Make sure that you explain and describe what the children go past on the way to the house and use lots of description to describe your house once you get there. Don’t forget to include information about the characters. Look at how the author has done this for a little help. Make your chapter 1 really exciting. Grab the reader - make them want to read some more!

Year 3 Weekly Challenges for week beginning 20th April

Good morning Year 3 and welcome to another week of Learning from Home.

Here are all of the different challenges that you can dip into over the week.

Please make sure that you try some of them, especially the Reading, Sumdog and Nessy challenges.

Have fun and keep learning. We are so proud of all of your efforts and so grateful for all of the help that your parents are giving you all. Please make sure you say a big “Thank you” to them from all of us in the Year 3 team. Try to do a PE challenge each day.

PE with Joe Wicks. Yoga (there are some super videos on line). One of Mrs Gregan’s PE challenges for the week. Our outdoor warm up. How many of each station can you do? (Spotty dog… Downward dog running… Push ups… Star jumps) Trampolining. Skip with a skipping rope. Put on some music and have a good dance. Go for a bike ride or a walk or a run. If you have done any other form of exercise don’t forget to tell us about it.

Nessy

If you have a Nessy login, please make sure that you are having a go on Nessy each day. (Just 15 minutes a day will really help you.)

Daily Reading

Spelling

This week we would like you to practise the following words. Maybe you could try some of the exciting ways on the Fun Ways to Learn Your Spellings sheet that we sent out a few weeks ago. You might even be able to manage to put some of them in your written work this week.

Maybe you could have a go on some of the Sumdog spelling challenges - lots of your spelling words from the year are included in them.

See if you can make up a very short story that manages to get every one of these spellings into it.

Helping around the house

Don’t forget to keep helping around the house. What jobs can you do this week? Maybe you could make everyone’s bed or load the dishwasher/do the washing up. Maybe you could do some baking - make sure you tidy up afterwards, or maybe you can tidy your bedroom without being asked. Don’t forget to send us a picture of you helping around the home.

Typing

Have a go at some of the typing games on Purple Mash. Are you a Sadie Spider and a Lizzie Ladybird? Can you improve on your scores within the set time? Let us know how you get on.

French

How many different items of furniture can you learn the names of in French? Can you draw some pictures and label them?

Draw a picture

This week you might want to have a go at drawing a picture to illustrate part of the story of The House Haunting. Make sure that you read the story section carefully, think about the words that the author has used to describe what is happening and what can be seen. Which part will you choose to illustrate? (Send us your pictures so that we can put them on the class blog.)

Prayer

Think about how we do our class and children’s liturgies in school.

Make up your own liturgy to share with your family. Think about what your theme will be, what you will look at, what you will read (a bible story), what you will say (a prayer). You might even want everyone to sing a song or hymn.

Or you could draw someone a card to cheer them up and pop it in the post or through their letterbox. You could do this for a friend or a family member or for an elderly neighbour. Give it a go and put a smile on someone’s face.

Year 3 Friday 3rd April Learning from Home

Good morning everyone. Lovely to see you all again, I can’t believe that we are at the end of our second week already.

Well done for all of your super learning so far, we just love getting all of your pictures. Keep them coming in and we will keep posting them on our blog.

Remember it’s the weekend and the start of the Easter holidays, (no blog until Tuesday 14th April) so try to do something lovely as a family. Remember to keep smiling and to be kind to everyone. Don’t forget to make time for God too - this Sunday is Palm Sunday - maybe you could look up the story and read it. Then next weekend we have the Easter celebrations - have a look at the stories and share them together as a family.

We have put some lovely Easter activities that you might want to look at. (These will be on the blog from Sunday)If you send photos, we will post them on the class blog after the holiday.

Today we would like you to try to make sure that you have done all of the tasks set so far this week, and to also get the tasks done for today. Have you checked out the weekly challenges?

Keep reading

Try to do 30 minutes reading and don’t forget to take a quiz if you need to. Why not read a story to a little brother or sister, choose an ebook with them and then you could quiz on it when you have finished. I have checked Acceleread today and there are lots of children close to their target, keep up the great work.

EPIC READING - Let’s keep growing a love of reading!

We are very excited because we have found a new reading resource for your child to use - Epic Reading. Epic reading can be used online or on the app. It has a huge selection of ebooks, completely free and the best thing is…you can find books using your child’s ZPD level! This is brilliant as it means your child can read books that accurately match their reading level. There are also lots of quizzes to do. It’s super easy to set up, using your email. If you would like to get involved, please email us on l.brisco@ourladystarofthesea.lancs.sch.uk and k.edmondson@ourladystarofthesea.lancs.sch.uk. We will then link your email to your child’s profile so that you can access the books at home. Miss Hornby has also asked if in the email you send, you can give permission for us to add your email to Texts to Parents; it would be very handy to have your emails saved on our system. Thank you.

Don’t forget these challenges. Play some of the games on Sumdog (Have you managed to add a cow to your pile in the junkyard game yet? I also like the cake monster game. Delicious!!!) and have a go at some of the units on addition and subtraction on IXL.

We have put some Sumdog spelling challenges on too, so that you can practise your spellings. (We have used spellings from this week and also from previous weeks.) Why not have a go.

Roll a dice three times and make a 3 digit number. Write it down. Roll the dice three times again and either add it to the first number or subtract it. Make sure that you line up the columns carefully. Check whether you have to exchange and make sure that you do this carefully. (Make sure that you take the bottom number from the top number when subtracting - BE CAREFUL!!!)

Today I would like you to write a non chronological report about Italy using your notes from earlier in the week. Please write an introduction using your notes on where Italy is and then write a paragraph for each of the headings I gave you, you will need to turn your notes into full sentences now.

Remember to write neatly and to join your writing carefully please. We are looking for pen points.

The capital city of Italy is Rome, it is on the coast of Italy. It is situated in the centre of Italy.

Please use 2Publish on Purple Mash to complete this piece of work so I can see them. To find it just type 2Publish into the search box on the Purple Mash home page, open 2Publish and then go on to the template called ‘What I have learned’, which will allow you to type and add images. Before you start please look at these examples so you can see what they could look like.

There is also a list here of things to try and include in your report.

• Full stops and some commas too

• Capital letters—don’t forget for place names too

• Interesting sentence starters

RE

The end of another week. Think about all the things that someone you live with has done for you this week, be grateful. Draw them a picture to make them smile, write them a little note on the back of the picture to explain to them why you are grateful. Make a promise to them to do something kind for them before the end of the day. Share this with them.

Year 3 Thursday 2nd April Learning from Home

Good morning everyone. We hope that you are ready to learn.

Have you spotted a theme in the pictures we have used this week? What can you see growing in your garden or in other people’s gardens when you are going for a walk. Can you name any of the flowers that you can see? My favourite ones are daffodils. They always look so happy.

You are probably getting into a great routine by now and learning from home is hopefully not so strange. Remember to keep helping around the house and doing things that make others smile. Remember be generous and grateful.

Reading

Lots of lovely reading again today please. Don’t forget to quiz if you have finished a book. There’s lots of super scores coming through to us. Keep thinking carefully and making sure that you answer the quiz questions correctly. Well done everyone. Cooper Crab learning points for all those who get 100% on a quiz.

This week’s Science is all about careful observation. You don’t need to write anything down unless you want to. Just make sure that you are observing carefully and talking about what you have seen. Reading (from books or finding out on the internet) is also an important aid in this week’s Science lesson.

Look out for signs of spring when you are outside - what do you notice? Can you see the changes that are taking place? Talk to your grown up about the changes that you can see. Keep looking every day to see if you can see anything different happening. (Keep a log of these if you want)

Make sure that you are using your senses to help you. What can you smell, hear and feel too? (Don’t go around tasting unless your grown up says it is okay).

Have you noticed anything about the days just recently? Look what time the sun comes up and goes down on the weather app. Check this out every day for a few days - what do you notice?

With all the sunshine we have had lately there are lots of lovely flowers beginning to grow. Look out for them in the garden or when you are out on a walk. How many can you identify and name? Have you read any amazing facts about these in the books you have read this week? If not why not look up some of these on the internet and see what you can find out about them.

With so many flowers around, there are many more insects. I’ve seen bumble bees, butterflies, beetles, woodlice, ants and midges in my garden. Which insects can you spot? Again can you find out any amazing facts about them?

You could even draw a picture of any flowers or insects you see if you want.

Some of you have been planting in the garden. Maybe you could plant some seeds and watch them grow over the coming weeks. You could take photos as things begin to grow.

Year 3 Tuesday 31st March 2020 Learning from Home

Good morning everyone. We hope that you are all well and ready to learn.

Reading

Read in a quiet space and don’t forget to quiz if you are ready to. Send us a picture of you reading so that we can share it. (Tomorrow your science will involve insects and plants, so maybe have a look at the e-books and find a suitable one). Don’t forget to quiz.

Maths - using column addition and subtraction

Roll a dice twice and make a 2 digit number. Write it down. Roll the dice twice again and either add this number to the first number or subtract one from the other (make sure that you start with the greatest number and subtract the lower number) Make sure that you line up the columns carefully. Check whether you have to exchange and make sure that you do this carefully. (Make sure that you take the bottom number from the top number when subtracting - BE CAREFUL!!!) (If you don’t have dice check out yesterday’s home learning for how to generate numbers on line).

English

Today, I would like you to start doing some research into the country of Italy, as we will be writing our non chronological report about it later in the week.

Part 1

Use the internet or any books you have at home to read about Italy. As you are reading I would  like you to write notes, today we are writing only notes rather than full sentences.

i.e Capital—Rome

As well as practising the skill of reading and taking notes I would like the children to practise listening and taking notes.

Part 2

Parents—with part of the information you have found pick a paragraph to read aloud to your child. Please read a sentence at a time to your child and allow them some time to write down some notes from what they have heard.

Parents please make sure that you think carefully about search terms you are typing into the search engine, so that children see the appropriate kind of information about Italy rather than what may be happening there right now.

Please research these areas and write notes in sections on your page in your home learning book

• Where is Italy? Which continent is it in? Which countries surround it? Which oceans surround it?

• Food

• Weather

• Landmarks and physical features - rivers, mountains, volcanoes etc

• Religion

• National celebrations

Then write down one really interesting fact that you found out today (it doesn’t have to be about any of these areas I have given ) —remember in note form.

French

Since we normally do French on a Tuesday and today is Tuesday, here is some French for you to do.

We would like you to watch the You Tube clip “J’aime les fruits” — click the button and learn the names of the different fruits. Sing–a–long with the song and learn the names as you sing.

You could also watch the first part of You Tube video on vocabulary to learn the names of more fruit and veg too.

Can you either print off the sheets here and match the names to the pictures? (if you have a printer) or you could draw yourself some pictures of fruit and vegetables (just like on the sheet) and write the names in French underneath. Make sure that you copy carefully.

If there’s any fruit or vegetables on the sheet that weren’t on the videos then maybe you could investigate what they are on the internet. Have fun!

Remember to keep helping around the house and doing those little jobs. They are so important and help to keep everyone happy and smiling. Challenge: Why not make all the beds or help to tidy the garden.

Typing Skills

This week we want to develop your typing skills . You can do this by having a go at some of the Dance Mat Typing activities. Click on the link below. We’re loving the animations!!!!

You can also go on Purple Mash and play some of their typing games. Just click on the hands and choose which activity or game you want to play. (You can slow them down or speed them up depending on how quick you can type.) Please let us know how you are getting on. Have fun!!

Daily Exercise

Remember to try to get in some exercise each day. Joe Wicks seems to be popular, but you could also put on some music and dance, do some yoga, play football, skip with a rope, play tig, go for a walk, go on the trampoline or a jog round the garden. You choose - why not send us some photos!!

Have a go at the challenges that have been set - there’s lots to choose from and you can play all sorts of different games. I like the one with the burgers and also the junkyard one. I found the cannonball one really tricky but thanks for the advice Kiefer - it helped a bit but my aim still isn’t too good!!!!!

Nessy

If you have a Nessy login make sure that you are continuing with your reading and spelling practice. We have had some really good Nessy Stars this week. Keep up the good work.

French

Now this one is a real challenge - set by Madame Jefferson. Can you follow the instructions here to make fruit ice lollies? If you can… you are in for a treat once they have frozen. Have fun!!! (You can always use Google translate to help you -copy words or phrases you don’t know, paste into Google translate and ask Google to translate for you.) You might want to change them slightly to include the fruits you like. Please send us some pictures - we would love to see them.

With all of this lovely sunshine that we have been having recently the daisies are beginning to grow in the gardens. What else can you see growing? Listen carefully and what can you hear? I’ve got lots of lovely birds singing in my garden and of course I can hear my hens clucking. They just love the sunshine! Think about all of these beauties of nature as you are in the garden this week. You will need it for science on Thursday.

This week we will be building up to writing a non chronological report so we need to practise skills that will help us with this, today we will be learning to write a summary .

This is my example summary about Italy, this is what yours needs to look like. I used the Italy fact file below to gather my information (click on the button to access it and see what I read).

Title of the text - Italy

My summary is - Italy is a mainly Christian country in Europe, the capital is Rome. The weather is varied from part to part, with the coastal regions being warmer than the higher parts where it can be cold, wet and snowy in the winter months. The 60 million people population use the Euro and mainly speak Italian.

Year 3 Friday 27th March 2020

Good Morning

Well this is the last day of the first week of learning at home. The weekend starts tomorrow, so no home learning will be set after today - until Monday morning. Well done to all of you who have been busy working and learning at home, we hope that you have enjoyed it.

Today we would like you to try to make sure that you have done all of the tasks set so far this week, and to also get the tasks done for today. Have you checked out the weekly challenges?

Sandwiches

On the weekly challenges you will hopefully have noticed that one of the tasks was to make sandwiches for everyone to enjoy. Well done if you have done this already. I know some people have, (look at the photos - delicious!!!).

Today’s English is to write instructions for making a sandwich of your choice, you can do this on Purple Mash. Make sure that you think carefully about your instructions, writing them in order, using imperative (bossy) verbs, using time adverbials etc. Think of your ending sentence to finish off your instructions too. Once you have done this save your instructions so that we can have a look at them. Make sure that they can be followed easily by someone else - don’t miss any bits out otherwise your sandwiches might be very strange!!!!!

Maths

There are lots of Sumdog challenges on line, have you had a go at these? If you have not accessed Sumdog yet please make sure that you look at the Sumdog blog from Monday (23/03). It will tell you how to access your account and what your username and password are. There is even a video put together by Mrs Hotchkiss to explain what to do, make sure you check it out.

We would also like you to have a go at comparing and ordering measurements today.

Look carefully at the measurements you have made. What do you notice. Does the item with biggest number mean it is the longest or the one with the smallest number mean the shortest? Can you explain?

We have come to the end of our first week of learning at home. Take some time to thank God for the fun times that you have all had.

Write a Thank You prayer to God thanking Him for all of the good things that have happened to you this week. Illustrate your prayer.

Don’t forget to spend a little quiet time with God sharing this prayer with Him. You might want to light a candle and find some objects or a picture to look at, like we do during liturgy in class.

Maybe you could take a picture and send it to us or send us an email with your prayer written on it so that we can share them with everyone.
