Growth Mindset ‘Home School’ poster

I would like you to create a poster for your home school with all our learning characters on. Do you like the Lyons’ family home learning poster? It is up in our office! You could put it up in your work space at home! Why not tell your parents all about our learning characters and how each one helps us to learn? You may need to go back and watch the Dragon Slayer film again today because I want you to get descriptive! You are going to teach your parents the grammar skill extended (or expanded noun phrases) and do lots of lovely ones about the Dragon Slayer story in your home learning books. You can draw the characters too if you like. Try and use powerful vocabulary. There is a song and a quick film in the ‘Help your child’ section to jog your memory.

Again, don’t forget daily/weekly learning. Have you made your rainbow yet? Have you spotted any?

The Iron Man

Read part of Chapter 5.

Can you write instructions for putting the Iron Man back together again once he has reached Australia?

Make sure that you use imperative verbs (they are the bossy ones) and also some time adverbials - first, then, next, after that etc. Make sure that your instructions are in order and that they are clear so that they could be followed. You can do this on Purple Mash as we have put it on a “2do” - don’t forget to save it so that we can have a look at it.

Predicting: What do you think the challenge that the Iron Man gave to the Space-bat-angel-dragon will be? Write your ideas down. You could start your sentences with:

I wonder if … or Maybe the Iron Man’s challenge is to … or I think that …

Make sure that you check your sentences and that you have included punctuation. Keep your writing neat.

Do you think that the Space-bat-angel-dragon will take on the Iron Man’s challenge? What do you think will happen? Write about your prediction.

Maths

Remember to check out the sumdog website. We have added some different challenges for you to be getting on with.

Can you use a ruler to measure in mm (millimetres) Remember there are 10mm to every cm. Using mm to measure allows you to be more accurate and to measure much smaller items. Can you find some things to measure and measure them carefully. Remember that you always need to start at the 0 on the ruler and measure carefully to the end of the object.

Record your measurements in your maths learning at home book. Remember to work neatly.

Can you record how many mm and then record how many cm and mm? Make sure you think carefully.

e.g. A box 102mm 10cm 2mm

How many things can you measure? Have fun!

Geography challenge

Our new topic is ‘Our European neighbours’, in our first lesson we found the continents on a map and found out some facts about Europe. Next I would like you to use the internet to find a world map and complete the European countries 2do on Purple Mash. You should already have all of your login details and it should just pop up when you access it.

Wednesday 25th March Home Learning Reception

Thank you once again for the wonderful pictures and updates. It brightens my day to see all of the children enjoyed their learning at home. Like yesterday, now that you have watched this short video, go on a sound hunt around the house, what can you find? Following this, read a story of your child’s choice and see if today’s sound is in the story. How many times can you hear the sound? How many times can you see the sound? You could then practise your letter formation.

Ready for a further challenge: Remember that you could have a go at writing words containing the oy sound such as boy, toy and enjoy. You might like to turn this into a spelling challenge if you feel your child is ready for this.

2. IT: Login to your Purple Mash account following the website link:

You then need to click on: find my schools login page, and then type in our school name. Once you have done this please then type in your child’s username and password.

Today we would like you to create a picture of your family using paint.

3. PE: Today have a go at football! Can you kick a ball to each other? If you don’t have a football you could have a go at making a round object using newspaper and tape to create your own ball. If it’s too windy or rainy you could use this ball to practise your throwing and catching as it will be nice and light for the children to catch.

4. Sum Dog: Today is the last day to complete the first challenge or to have one final practise. Tomorrow the challenge will change!

Re-read chapter 4 of Flat Stanley. Thinking about the 5 main parts of a story, can you write:

What happened in the beginning? Introducing main characters and setting.
What happened in the build up? How do we know a problem is about to occur?
What happened in the problem? What is the problem? Is there a dilemma?
What happened in the resolution? How was the problem resolved?
What happened in the conclusion? How did the chapter end? Were the characters happy?

We have been learning about how to look after ourselves and our bodies in science.  Think about what you need to do in order to brush your teeth properly.  Imagine you are writing instructions for an alien who has never brushed their teeth before.  What would the title of the instructions be? What will the aliens need? What will the step by step instructions be?

The Iron Man

My Prediction: What had the space-bat-angel-dragon come to earth for? Think carefully about your sentences - make them exciting. Can you use a complex sentence? Think about your vocab. Be brilliant!!!! Explain clearly and in detail why it has come to earth. What is it going to do? How is it going to do it? Why does it want to do this? Where does it want to do this? Does it need any help? etc

My Prediction: What do you think the Iron Man thought that he could do? Make sure that your explanation is clear and detailed. Use different sentence openers and try to use some complex sentences. Use exciting vocabulary.

Remember neat handwriting please Don’t forget to date your work and underline it with a ruler.

Maths

Have you looked at the SumDog video and login yet? Why not give this a go!

Using a ruler with cm, find different items around the house and measure them carefully. Before you measure them can you estimate how long they are. When you measure, make sure that you start measuring at 0cm and check the end of the object carefully. (Does it make a whole cm?)

Can you measure your learning at home books, your reading book. your pencil case, the remote control, a Lego brick, your tablet/ipad or similar, a £5 note? What else can you measure? Make sure that you record your estimations and the actual measurement of the things that you measure in your maths learning at home book. (Set it out like you did yesterday - make sure that you work neatly and carefully) Estimate and then measure. How close were you? The more you measure and get to know how long things are, the easier you might find it to make good estimates.

2. Maths and PE: Today we want to keep you moving. Create your own number hunt. Write the numbers 1-20 on paper and hide these numbers around the house. Once your child has found them all they could have a go at ordering these numbers. They may find the teen numbers tricky. You could see which numbers they struggle to identify (prioritise any numbers under 10) and you could play the old party game “Four corners”. Put 1 number in each corner of your house. Put some music on and have a boogie! When the music stops the child has to chose a corner/number and if the number that they are stood at is called out then they are out of the game. You could play this with siblings and see who wins or you could play this child v parent. How many rounds can you win before your number is called.

3. Sum Dog: I am so glad that so many of you enjoyed using Sum Dog yesterday. If you haven’t yet logged on, please take some time today to get your child logged in and have a go at the challenges. If you’ve already logged see if you can better your scores from yesterday.

Today, we are focusing on using the key Year 4 grammar skill FRONTED ADVERBIALS. In the ‘Help your Child’ section, there is a video explaining all about them to jog your memory. The Purple Mash 2do activity, ‘A Day out,’ you did last week, explored fronted adverbials - so if you’ve not done it, log in and try now.

We have done them lots in class, so you will be able to teach your parents all about them. Then look at the sheet below for a grammar activity to carry out in your Yellow home learning books.

Eventually, (next week) we will be writing the story of the Dragon Slayer - so don’t be tempted to do it yet!
