Year 4 Weekly home learning activities for week starting Monday 4th May

Home Learning - Monday 4th May 2020

A new week of learning and lots of new units of work to start. In English we will be starting Wonder (I am very excited). In maths, I will be starting to teach you again using White Rose materials that you are used to. In history, we will be starting a local history unit of work and in science, focusing our attention on the human life cycle.

I hope you enjoy my introductory video for the week…don’t worry I will appear. Enjoy listening to Space Oddity by David Bowie and hopefully you will see the link to our learning this week. You know what I am like, if we can launch learning in a fun and creative way - then let’s do it!

The first message that we will meet in this book is ‘Choose Kind.’ That is exactly what I would like you to do this week. What acts of kindness can you do for the people who are making sure that you are safe, or for your local community, can you make someone smile. The last half term is called ‘Service with a Smile.’ What can you do to bring a smile to the face of someone else this week? Let me know what acts of kindness you complete!

History - Local History - Blackpool - a 2 day lesson. Monday and Tuesday

Today we will be starting our new unit of history work - local history - BLACKPOOL! Not only is Blackpool a seaside resort but it was one of the first and people came from all over to be entertained and to visit it’s famous tower. Today is an introductory lesson with 2 tasks: a brief note taking task and then to create a timeline of Blackpool’s history.

I really do not know how to begin when writing this blog. Firstly, I want to say how much of gift it has been to teach your children during their first year at school. Watching them grow and achieve new skills is just the greatest gift! I cannot tell you all of the many memories that I will hold of your children... when they have burst with excitement, happiness and pride when achieving something for the first time! Although this year hasn’t ended as we would have hoped, it has been such a special year!

From the moment we began learning from home, I have been so in awe of you all, your determination to support your children by making sure that, despite this strange time, they feel happy, safe and excited to learn! I feel so grateful to be a part of such a positive community and can only thank each one of you for helping to create this!

Today marks the start of my maternity leave but this does not mean that I will no longer be checking in on the children and seeing how they are getting on. I hope that they continue to enjoy the coming activities that I have planned!

Should learning from home be continuing after the half term, Miss Brisco will also be continuing to plan new activities for you to complete at home… I know that she is very excited to support the Reception children!

Finally, I must say a huge thank you for the very thoughtful email I received, with all of the children and the sweetest message! I am so touched and find myself in tears each time I look at their smiling faces!

You will all continue to be in my prayers and thoughts. Keep safe and well!

I can’t believe that we’ve reached yet another Friday.

I have loved receiving your photographs this week. Your creativity in your learning has been superb! I have been particularly blown away by your fantastic English work. It looks as though you’ve all enjoyed the Roald Dahl poems. I have also been receiving lots of different emails telling me that different awards have been achieved on the different learning platforms, including more than 30 books read on Epic and lots of sections complete on IXL. Keep it up Year 2!

Also … after looking through all of your friend’s home learning, you might just see a little message from a familiar face and a particularly wriggly puppy!

3. Oxford Owl: Login to Oxford Owl and read your next book. Remember to discuss the story throughout, checking your child’s understanding. Please make a note of any sounds or tricky words that your child struggles with and focus on these throughout the next few days/until they know them.

Today’s specific activities:

1. PE: Today why not head out on a family bike ride? Or if you loved the challenge last week, this week you could try a running challenge: Who can run whilst keeping a sheet of paper on their tummy without it falling down? You could create a family race once you have had a little practise, or see how long you can keep it on for without. You could even turn this into a mini investigation to see if the type or size of paper makes a difference to your success… I look forward to seeing your photographs.

Year 3 Friday 1st May Learning from Home

Good morning children. I can’t believe it’s nearly the weekend again, I hope that you have enjoyed your learning this week.

Reading

There has been some amazing reading going on this week, with lots of people reaching their targets, some twice and lots more people getting sooooo close. Keep reading and don’t forget to let us know when you have reached your target so that we can celebrate. Well done everyone, keep up the good work. Congratulations to Mason who has reached his target.

Maths

Here are the answers from yesterday’s maths. How did you get on?

English

Today we are going to write the final chapter in our story. So re-read Chapter 5 below.

Just like we have done before, you are going to use the chapter above to help you to write your own chapter, but again you are going to make it your own. Look carefully at how the author has used description and powerful verbs. Look at how they have added adverbs and speech. Using the same sort of plan as the author in the story you are going to write your own Chapter 5.

Think carefully about how you are going to write this final part of the story. Have the children really learned their lesson? (I don’t think so - Ben just asks for a bacon sandwich and thinks that everything will be okay).

Think carefully about what they say to each other. How do they say it? Remember to add an action to explain in more detail.

Look at how the author has referred to the warning that was given at the beginning of the story. How will you do this?

Think about the best words to choose for the best impact. Remember to think carefully about the verbs that you use - select really powerful ones to add to the impact of your story and create a clear picture for the reader.

Make sure that your handwriting is really neat and clear and is joined up please. Think carefully about your spelling and remember to use punctuation.

When you have finished your chapter 5, read it through carefully to make sure that it makes sense.

It’s Friday again, so it’s time for some RE.

Read the story of Doubting Thomas.

How do you think Thomas felt? Can you understand why Thomas felt like that? Have you ever been told something but because you haven’t seen it for yourself you are not sure whether to believe it or not?

Task 1 Write a list of questions you would like to ask Thomas about what happened and how he came to believe in Jesus’ resurrection.

Task 2 Think about Jesus’ words ‘Blessed are those who have not seen me…’ What do you think He meant by these words? How do these words apply to us today? Write a short paragraph about what you think Jesus meant by this and how these words apply to us today.

Task 3 Thomas didn’t believe because he did not see Jesus. Where do you see Jesus? Draw a picture of where you see Jesus today. (I see Jesus in the many wonderful things that I see people doing to help other people. What sort of things do you see Jesus in?)
