Another busy week in Year 4! This week, we said goodbye to Madame Jefferson, who is retiring. Children made her lots of mini cards to express their gratitude and wish her Bonne chance!
We have done some excellent Shakespeare drama this week - please enjoy the pictures below. The spirit, Ariel even took flight around the field! This play has explored such great themes such as entrapment, duty, revenge, freedom and forgiveness! Children wrote a persuasive letter as either Caliban the monster or Ariel the spirit to beg to be given their liberty! Next week, they will find out the rest of this magical story. We are also loving our chilling novel, ‘The Snow-Walker’s Son’ and it has been lovely to sit back and watch the children show such depth of comprehension with what they read. Also their knowledge of root words (and a bit of latin) is really paying off and they use clue in the word to help them figure it out. Children say things like, ‘Exile must mean something about going out because ‘ex’ is Latin for out,’ and ‘subservient’ must mean serving under because the sub prefix means ‘under.’
Maths has seen us develop great understanding about non-unit fractions in various forms - such as in shapes, of amounts and on numberlines. The IXL homework this week will really help to consolidate this.
In Science, children conducted a fair test to explore, “Which material muffles sound the best?” Now, we have swiftly moved onto our last topic - Light!
In other VERY EXCITING news, all children throughout school have learned about who their teacher will be for year 5 next year. Mr. Cornwell is new to our school and will be the Year 5 teacher next year. He is currently spending time within class getting to know all the children and after his first morning with them, he knew all their names! Well done Mr Cornwell - we welcome you to Our Lady Star of the Sea.
This week, the worship was all about Hope. These children did a marvellous job and it was lovely to hear what other children’s hopes are.
Let’s Celebrate

Although the weeks seem to by whizzing by, our learning certainly isn’t showing signs of stopping. This week we have been introduced to a new poem, “The Spider and the Fly”. Firstly, we listened to the introduction of the poem, which posed lots of questions and filled our minds with ideas about the poem, the characters and what might happen next. After this, we then watched the first part of the poem and compared our thoughts now that we could see the characters and the setting. Today, the children have been great detectives as they have investigated the crime that was/ has been claimed to have been committed by the spider.
We have also had the absolute joy of spending Monday morning with Mrs Curtis and a wonderful art lesson! All of the children loved spending time creating their clay creations. It is just wonderful to see the children explore new materials and use their imaginations to be creative. Well done everybody!
In PE this week we have continued to practise our bat and ball skills. The children are gaining great confident when batting a ball to a partner… we have had some great rally’s, along with lots of encouraging words to one another… so much so that the whole class were awarded the PE stars this week.
On Friday the children also found out the wonderful news that Mrs Lyons will be their teacher next year! The children will absolutely flourish under Mrs Lyons wonderful lead and we cannot wait to welcome her into one of our lessons next week! I know that she is also very excited for the year ahead!
Let’s Celebrate…
Esther… We continue to be so impressed by your wonderful effort each and every day! Liam… For being such a wonderful learner! Reading your writing of, the Iron breaded dragon blew us away! You have soaked in all of our grammar and vocabulary skills throughout the year and have created a brilliant piece of writing! We are so proud of you! It is an absolute pleasure teaching you Liam, We just know that we are going to be reading more of your wonderful writing as you travel through the school. Keep up the amazing work!

A fabulous week! We have been enjoying being together in our final couple of weeks. Luckily the weather has been kind to us and we have loved learning in our outdoor environment. Now all the trees are in leaf and our plants and flowers in bloom it is truly and beautiful place to be.
Key Person Blog
This week the children have enjoyed practising their sounds in the garden. We had lots of objects to sort; our task was to work out what the first sound in the word was, and then find the matching letter on the tray. We were very proud when we sorted all the objects together as a team!
We got ‘creative’ with the stickle bricks this week – the children have loved making different creations and were proud to show them to their friends and adults in the classroom. Some of us made excellent cameras with moving and removable parts!
As usual there has been lots of counting (the children want to count everything!) We have been introduced to the Number 9 Number Block (click here to watch). Numberblock Four is amazed to find another square Numberblock (number 9)! We have also been finding out different ways that we can make the number 9. We used different objects to help us to explore and some of the children even thought of 3 numbers to make up 9!
The link blocks we used for counting have been very popular this week. We have revisited ‘Octoblock’ (number 8) and made Octoblock in a different ways using the purple blocks. The remaining blocks were used to stretch from one side of the garden to the other…it took absolutely ages and a fantastical amount of blocks.
As if that wasn’t enough the children used our wellies in a row to see exactly how far they stretched across the garden. They were 52 single wellies! Phew! That was a lot of counting.
Why don’t you see what you can count at home!
Have a lovely weekend

Dancing, singing and laughing has most definitely been the theme for the week this week in Year 6! You are in for such a treat with their end of year play. When I watch them on stage now, I can’t believe some of them are the same children that started the play 4 week ago. Their confidence has grown so much and are now so much more comfortable on stage that they are bringing their characters fully to life!

Well it has been a real week of accomplishment in year 4! We have dived into our work on fractions and children have loved gleaning a depth of understanding of the relationship between the part and the whole. We have loved our English - in our Shakespeare work, we re-created a Tempest and children created a chaotic scene, with calls of “Mercy on us, we slit, we split,’ ‘Keep to your cabins,’ and ‘All lost,’ as they became shipwrecked. We then wrote a descriptive piece using all our year 4 features to create a picture of the storm. Amazing writing! We then met the monster Caliban and learned about the relationship between him and Prospero. More writing then - describing poor Caliban and his island. We are also loving our new novel - The Snow-Walker’s son. It is a more complicated story - but it is lovely to see children using the clues in the text to figure it out!
On Wednesday, we went to church to celebrate the feast day of St Peter and St Paul. Children really did sing their hearts out and joined in beautifully with the mass responses. We have also had two worship groups in class this week.
First, these children shared with us how to live our lives. What a beautiful worship! They used the Beatitudes to give advice on how to do as Jesus asks.
Later in the week, these children helped us reflect on Jesus’s Sacrifice. It is a privilege to watch these worships, created by the children. They are so special and the whole class joins in so reverently.
Here are a few pictures of our drama this week and also we learned the game of Rummy instead of outside PE as the heavens opened!
Let’s Celebrate
This week our certificate winners were:
Iris who received a Bobby Bee certificate for full participation and 100% enthusiasm in every subject. You are a role model Iris.
Owen, who received a Cooper Crab certificate for his excellent focus. As the quote says above, concentration is the magic key!
TT ROCKSTARS GIGS: These children have completed all their gigs which means they know all times tables and can do them in less than 6 seconds consistently!) This deserves a special mention because it is a massive achievement and it requires a lot of hard work and dedication! But it is worth it to be confident for Year 5.

A CARDBOARD BOX PLEA! We really need at least 10 good size cardboard boxes for our upcoming Science topic about Light. These need to be at least 30cm high. We need them for next week.
Next week, Friday 8th and Friday 15th we will be swimming. However children will be completing their water safety skills. They will need to wear their uniforms but bring swimming costume and pyjamas. Obviously fleecy pyjamas are a bad idea.

This week....
Yet another fabulous week of learning. Our brains are growing so fast.
We are all enjoying our visits to the beach and to the library. We are now thinking where else we can visit that is within walking distance!!
Key person blog
What a week for our caterpillars! We came in on Wednesday morning and one of our caterpillars was starting to emerge from their chrysalids! We were all super excited. At first there were only four but today, another has emerged, meaning all five have now gone through their metamorphosis (one of our wow words we have recently learnt).
Our caterpillars had grown beautiful wings. The children said that the butterflies must be hungry—it’s hard work growing wings! We dissolved our little sachet of nectar in water and placed little droplets on flowers and pot them in the butterfly habitat with some slices of juicy orange. The butterflies landed on them and seemed to enjoy their tasty treat! We have been feeding them nectar and plan to release them soon.
We have also enjoyed reading our story we wrote together last week! Some of our friends hadn't seen the story as they weren't in last week, so we concentrated like Cooper Crab and told them all the parts of the story! We used our story map to help us—it was so much fun to remember all the different minibeasts we had put into our story.
We have continued with our trips out and have explored more of St Annes sea front, this time spotting baby ducks on the pond and investigating the waterfall. We tripped trapped across the bridge but luckily, we managed to avoid the troll.
Some of us also enjoyed a super story at St Annes library, Whatever Next. Click here to listen at home. We also had our snack at the library!
PE was great fun in the hall where we practised moving in different ways to the Sticky Kids song. This is one of our favourites. Click here to join in at home.
The children have explored length by measuring and comparing lengths of lots of different objects, including themselves.
Click here for a measuring activity to do at home.
We have even made popcorn…it went everywhere!!
Hope you all have a lovely weekend and we will see you all next week for more fun and learning.
Barbara, Michelle, Colette, Justine, Stephanie and Frances.
I am sure you will agree that we are all working very hard…and also having lots of FUN!! Here are even more photos of our learning; sound sorting, symmetry, mark making big and small, constructing, reading our floorbooks, making collage pictures, playing hairdressers, working on the Touch TV and capturing minibeasts for further investigation!!! Phew!!
We have a request from any gardeners at home. We have had delivered a small Christmas tree to look after and nurture. If anyone has a large pot and some compost and you are willing to donate them to nursery, we would be most grateful. We are wanting it to grow the tree really tall then we can decorate it at Christmas time with baubles and lights!
Make sure the children have a good rest this weekend as next week is even busier!!!!!
Have a fabulous weekend full of family fun and we will see you on Monday!
Barbara
Year 3 Blog 1.7.22 - Nothing is impossible. The words itself says, "I'M POSSIBLE!"
The weeks really are flying by! This week the children have WOWED us with their independent writing! We have a class of reflective learners and we are SO proud of each one of them. Our Year 3’s set off writing their own versions of the Iron Man… and then swiftly got their purple pencils out to add missing punctuation, improve their vocabulary choices AND sentence structures. Reading and marking their writing has been the biggest joy! Well done everybody!
We also had another special moment this week as we celebrated the feast of St Peter and Paul in church. Celebrating mass together as a school felt so special! Watching the children help one another with the parts of the mass was just beautiful, thank you children!
The children have also finished their investigations in science this week. We have been exploring different surfaces and seeing what effect this has when trying to make objects travel. The children worked brilliantly together and I am sure they could tell you lots about their findings!
Let’s celebrate!
A Determined learner… JACOB: A huge well done! You have shown such effort and focus this week and always, “try, try, try” to do your very best. During our writing this week you made sure to carefully edit your work, checking to see if you had included all of our Year 3 skills, Brilliant Jacob!
A Co-operative and determined learner…BELLA: You have wowed us this week with your absolute focus and determination during your writing of the Iron Man. You thought carefully about the vocabulary you used and made sure to include the key parts of your story. You have achieved so many targets this year because you try so hard and never give up! Well done Bella!
Summer Reading Challenge:
Tpday we have had one of the librarians ftom St. Annes Library in to talk to us about the summer reading challenge at the library. This starts tomorrow and they are having a launch event with different activities. It is always good to keep reading ticking over during the summer holidays so why not sign up to complete the challenge. We are sure that the children will really enjoy it.
Reminders:
Please remember that our PE days are Monday and Thursday. Make sure to wear your PE kit on these days!
We hope you all have a wonderful weekend!
