Year 6 Weekly Blog - 'The greatest gifts we can give our children are the roots of responsibility and the wings of independence'

Wow what a start to the summer term! We have all come back so well rested and ready to take on the challenges of the term! We have shown so much focus, bravery, reflection and most of all resilience this week! We could not ask the children to work any harder. This week we have received feedback from the papers we completed before half term and it is so wonderful to see them, not just focusing on their marks but celebrating their progress scores from previous paper. They are so reflective and have mastered a real positive approach, where they celebrate their successes but look carefully at the areas they know they need to work on, working in their learning partners to help one another…

Continuing to learn…

As expected, these final two weeks are all about revision and narrowing the gaps. The class have had detailed feedback on the papers that they have completed. They should now have a really focused list of revision material. The children know that their homework is all about revision and that they are leading this for themselves but you may just want to familiarise yourself with what has been given to them and offer support where needed. However, they have to be motivated to do well and to gather their own resources from class if they want extra revision material.

With a couple of bank holidays coming up, every day is crucial. Please ensure that your children are in school on time to maximise every learning opportunity.

In art, the children have loved starting their new topic, where they have al created a photomontage, inspired by the Dada art movement, why not ask them about this and what they have been creating in class.

We will be completing our last formal set of papers next week which will give the children an indication of the progress that they have made. Homework is live and all areas are a crucial tool to help your child revisit or practice skills.

Leading Learners

Well done to Christian and Harriet this week.

Christian we have been so impressed with your desire to focus on your work, you are really becoming such a concentrated Cooper Crab! You are approaching every lesson with such a calm, logical and focused approach and this is reflected in the progress you are making.

Harriet we love the way this week you have took all feedback in your stride. You have been super reflective in your approach, quietly celebrating the areas you have achieved and recognising what you need to work on. This determination and self-reflection will serve you well in the future- well done. 

Attentive and Discerning Butterflies

This half term we will be on the lookout for all the children that are attentive to the big and small things, and to the response of others. We will also be spotting children who are discerning, who listen to what God’s calls us to be. This week we thank Lexi for being attentive and discerning.

Year 6 Weekly Home Learning 21.04.23

With just 2 weeks until the end of year assessments, we have ramped up learning in class. The children are very clear about what they need to do and the areas that they need to develop. Please look at the ‘How to Help Your Child’ button on the Year 6 page. There are lots of resources for the children to access as well as the revision boxes that are in the classroom.

Maths - Please complete the reasoning paper that I sent you home for homework. There is a good mixture of questions in the booklet that will challenge your reasoning. Read the question carefully! You need to decide how best to work through these so that it will benefit you individually- if you need to work on your time then you need to get an adult to time you!

GPS - Have a go at the GPS paper that I have sent you home for homework.

SPELLING FOCUS - i before e, except after c. This is a really tricky rule! Focus on it.

Welcome back! I hope everyone managed a rest this Easter, we’re going to need all the energy we can muster!

It was so lovely to see everyone’s smiley faces this week. I had missed you all! We started the week with a discussion about how plants grow, what do they need? We then decided to plant some beans. First we made a cosy bed for the seed to live in, covered it up with soil, gave it a drink and then put it in the sunshine. We are all now waiting for the seed to germinate! We then though of all the stories we could think of about growing. We stared of course with Javk and the beanstalk. Click here to watch.

The children are amazed at how the grass seeds and meadow seeds we planted before Easter have grown…they have geminated and we now have grass (a lawn) and flower shoots.

The children have been longing for an ice cream parlour, so this week we have made one. Take a look!

We have been focusing on number by making lots of number bonds to 10…it’s really tricky!

The children have also been practising ALL their sounds including ‘special friends’, we just keep getting better and better.

On Thursday and Friday the LIfe Education Bus (minus the bus) came to nursery to talk about how to look after ourselves…Harold the Giraffe came along too.

Planting potatoes

Before Easter we plated some potatoes…..they have not grown yet, but we are hopeful!

The Life Bus came to visit

The children really enjoy the Life Education sessions. We talked things through with Harold the Giraffe and watched video clips to engage with new learning such as discussing how we can stay healthy. Take a look at the photos.

Worship

This week we introduced a very simple way the concept of the Trinity, where God is three-in-one and each part loves the others and loves us. The children understood that we are made in the image of God, we are designed to love God and love one another in our wider communities too... that our loving actions can be used by God to do incredible things. What a lovely first week back after the holidays! We’ve loved seeing some sunshine towards the end of the week.

We sat as a key group at the start of the week and spoke about what we would like to learn about this term. We are going to look at growing, rainbows and weather. Some of us are interested in more water play, and one of us even wants to learn how to draw a robot!

We experimented with the water and making ripples. We worked hard to work the syringes and use different containers to see the impact on the water. Maybe next week we could make the water different colours.

We have had fun this week making rainbow sensory bottles. We all chose our favourite colours and added colour to water with glitter and oil. As we moved the bottle around something happened to the water and oil - they didn’t mix! Ask your child if they can remember whether the water or oil was the heaviest! We’ve also been busy planting beans and peas in the garden - we can’t wait to see if they grow!

Welcome back everyone, hope you all had a good rest over Easter. Hopefully, by now, everyone should have found out which school they will be going to in September, and hopefully everyone has got their first choice.

This week we have started the term with a bang and have started our growing topic by planting beans and peas. We are hoping our beanstalks grow and wonder if we will see any giants.

The children have discussed what else they would like to learn this term, lots of suggestions include a pretend shop, going to a real shop, a picnic and finding out if we can grow pasta. Looks like we are going to be really busy!

We have had lots of fun practising our throwing and catching, ready for Sports Day later in the year. We have all been improving like Lizzie Ladybird.

Independence will be a big focus over the coming weeks as our older children prepare for the transition to school. Here is some info on this important time. Click here.

We have already become very skilled at putting our shoes and socks on, as well as putting on our coats. We are now practising doing up our zips and recognising our names on our trays and book bags. This week we have decorated name tags that we will attach to our book bags to help us recognise our names.

Our number work continues as we concentrate on number bonds and growing our brains by working out how we can make number bonds up to 10. We are learning that there are different ways to make the same number., so 6 can be 6 and 0, or 5 and 1, or 4 and 2, or 3 and 3. But its still 6!

As in previous years the children will be designing their own bespoke t shirt to wear on sports day. Could you please bring in asap a named plain white t shirt so that we can get going! Thank you.

Phew, what a busy week! We will be continuing with our exploration of ‘growing’ and parts of flowers of plants and flowers next week but we will also be writing to Prince Charles and Queen Camilla to say congratulation on his Coronation. We will be sending him some lovely portraits of both him and Camilla!

The children have worked incredibly hard this half term, I am so proud of them and the progress they have made. My homework is to rest and enjoy your break. If you get chance, it would be lovely to hear what you have been up to during the Easter Holidays and write a few sentences to share with the class :)

Unfortunately, I have not managed to complete a mock phonics screening with all the children due to our unexpected visitors. So, I will complete these after Easter and send packs home for you to help support your child at home. Don’t forget you can use all the resources on the ‘help your child at home’ to practise.

Year 1 Weekly Blog 6.4.23

As a school community we have gathered together each morning, to watch as each year group has re-enacted parts of Jesus’ Easter journey. Each day as part of our RE, we have taken the time to discuss, reflect, ask questions and role play. Then watched the next class to share their interpretation with us. Here is our own retelling of Palm Sunday.

English: We have written innovation drafts of our Peter Rabbit stories, after Easter we are excited to write our stories again in our best handwriting and then self-assess and mark our own work.

Maths: We have continued looking at wholes and parts using cherry diagrams, we have also been introduced to bar charts! To help we used multilink and had to work out the parts by seeing how many multilink fit in the bar chart. We are getting quicker at working out the parts. Please continue to practice at home by asking your child how many more they need up to 5 e.g the whole is 5, I have two what is the other part? then once confident go up to 10.

Science: We were excited to take our cress home and shocked that our apple seed has grown a shoot, we germinated it weeks ago then planted it 2 weeks ago. Our sprouting peas have grown too!

Lenten Promise:

Wow what a successful art exhibition we had yesterday, thank you so much for coming it was lovely to see the excitement on the children’s faces and for them to share their amazing art work with you. I can’t believe how many people we were able to fit into the classroom! We raised over £65 for CAFOD!

We have had a lovely end to our half term, I promised the children if they worked hard this week, we could have a golden day! It was well deserved, we continued with our Easter arts and crafts.

Well done to our awardees: A Sadie Spider for your determination with your handwriting and reading and a Lizzie Ladybird for being a reflective learner, listening and focusing during input and applying this especially in your English work.

Henry is going home with this person for super listening especially in English, I am so proud of your focus this week and I know you are too, well done!

Well done to these children, they were announced in our assembly today, keep it up it would be wonderful if everyone could get their bronze certificate.

Easter Egg Competition

There were lots of brilliant entries well done :), there was even a Miss Drummond egg, I feel very honoured thank you :). The class council voted for their winners it was a very difficult choice. Well done to our Year 1 and our Key stage 1 winners.

Year 6 Weekly Blog - 'He is risen. He is not there.'

What a way to end a wonderful term together! I am sure that you were all moved by the children’s depiction of the Resurrection this morning - many a tear had to be wiped from the eye. This morning is what education is all about. The children having the opportunity to think outside of the box, be creative and to express themselves. We Are incredibly proud of them all.

Continuing to learn

We have continued to really push ourselves to learn in the last week of this term. In addition to focusing on the Easter assembly, the children have been writing their own versions of Jesus’ journey to His cross. This piece is being written in 1st person so the children really have to focus on the emotion of the event. I can’t wait to share these with you after half term. In maths, we have completed our next mock papers, and continued with our percentage work!

All of the children have enough revision resources for over half term for them to access. They have worked so hard and we are now onto the final push. The three weeks after half term will be focused on revision and helping the children in each of the different areas.

Holy Week in school

It’s been a time of thoughtful reflection this week as we have been to all of the school Holy Week assemblies. The children sat so beautifully and calm and when we returned to nursery they were able to tell in great detail each segment of the Easter Story. I am so proud of them.

They rest of the week has been dedicated to Easter activities and having fun! We made Easter biscuits (yum, yum, yum< went on an Easter egg hunt, played pin the tail on the bunny, and guessed what Easter themed object was in the ‘magic box’ this week.

The glorious weather has meant we have spent even more time in the garden. We have planted potatoes, peas and beans, and our grass has germinated and started to grow…we will have a lawn soon!

This week has been all about Easter. We wee very lucky to be invited into assembly each morning to see the school perform the story of Easter. We thought they were all so good and we were so pleased that we knew the story and could follow what was going on.

We have been busy with our Easter crafts, making bunnies and chicks and we had so much fun trying to pin the tail on the Easter Bunny.

Outside we had to listen very carefully to the clues as we had an Easter Egg Hunt.

This week I have been so impressed with the children’s memory - I printed pictures from the Easter story and they were able to help me stick them in our floor book in the correct order. Their memories are amazing!

The children have also worked hard to order numbers 1-10 using numbers on Easter eggs. The eggs were cut in half and had spots on the bottom. The children were great at matching the numbers with the correct quantity. 

I hope you all have a lovely, restful Easter break with your families. I look forward to hearing all about it when we come back.

You will notice that I have sent home an Easter activity book, full of little tasks to do at home (in case of a rainy day). Also, you will find some sunflower seeds in a small brown envelope. They are for you to plant together at home and nurture in readiness to plant in the nursery garden in June. Good luck!

It has been such a lovely term. The children’s learning knows no bounds and we are all so very proud of all their achievements, but we couldn’t do it without your continued support; it makes nursery such a wonderful learning community. Thank you very very much.

I can not believe we have come to the end of another Term. The children have grown so much, not just in height, but also in character! The love, understanding and compassion that is shown to one another on the playground is so humbling to witness. The children have shone out with all those little acts of kindness to make a difference to some ones day. Let’s Celebrate!

Easter half term

There will be no formal homework over half term but it is important for the children to keep practicing their TT rockstars to keep up with their multiplication skills. Mr Cornwell is getting tired of all the children beating him on TTRS so he will also be practicing over the half term.

All the children have their end of year reading targets in their homework books so it is important for the children to continue with their reading over the half term and to try and reach their target.
