Another busy week…

We have continued our exploration of the body and how to stay fit and healthy. We started by watching the following short videos:

Remembrance day

This week we have been talking about the importance of peace, unity, and bravery in our everyday lives. We have been encouraging the children to share their thoughts related to these themes, and discuss ways they can practice these values at home and school.

We talked about the reason poppies are used to remember those who have given their lives in battle; because they are the flowers which grew on the battlefields after World War One ended. We watched a short video that depicts The Great War experienced by the animal inhabitants of a WW1 battlefield. Click here to watch at home. Everyone spotted the poppies straight away. We even have made our poppy wreath for or Worship table.

On Monday we will be observing a Moment of Silence: to honour those who have served in wars and conflicts. We will sit quietly and think about the themes of peace, unity, and bravery during this time.

Hello everyone,

What a wonderful week we have had, continuing to grow our brains.

We have been busy making firework sticks using sparkly pipe cleaners. The children were challenged to wrap the pipe cleaners around the stick. It was a little tricky, as the children had to use both hands to control the twisting and wrapping. This activity targets improving fine motor skills, like the pincer grasp and hand strength. The children enjoyed making the sounds of fireworks as they were making them.

We have also continued to be creative this week, making poppy's for our nursery remembrance wreath to go on the worship table. The children painted part of an cut out egg box in the poppy colours, and as we were making them, we discussed what the poppy represents. We have been enjoying PE outside this week with Mr. Murray. There has been lots of throwing activities and balancing the bean bags on our heads. We have been working as a team, sorting the coloured cones into our house colours. The children really enjoyed this time with Mr Murray.

As the weather is changing, we have needed to wear our coats a lot more. We have been teaching the children how to do the 'coat flip' to help them put their coats on themselves. Hello everyone and welcome to this week's blog.

We have had a very busy week as we continue to learn all about our bodies. This week we have explored our insides, trying to work out how our bodies work and how all our organs fit into such a small space. We think our bodies are amazing, but we are learning that we have to look after them. We have to get lots of exercise and make healthy food choices.

We discovered that our potatoes and carrots had grown and were ready to eat. We worked hard digging them up, sorting and washing them. Then we had a carrot picnic in the garden. They were delicious!

We have also been busy learning about remembrance by making poppies and also bonfire night by making fireworks pictures on the computer.

We have also had lots of practice at writing the numbers we have met, 0 and 1.

Why not have a go at home. Don't forget your duck fingers!

Christmas Nativity

We will be starting to learn our Christmas Nativity songs next week! We are all excited. The nursery children will be stars in our production. They will all require white leggings, a plain white t-shirt and a strand of silver tinsel please (named please). We have the shiny star costumes here ready and waiting.

Nativity productions will take place on:

Tuesday 3rd December: this production will be the dress rehearsal for the main school only. If you want your child to take part they will have to be in nursery at 8.45 am and collected at 10.30 am if it is not your child’s usual session. Please note a DVD of the production will be taken at this performance that you will be able to purchase.

Wednesday 4th December: Parent performance 9.30 am

Thursday 5th December: Parent performance 9.30 am

Water bottles

May I please remind everyone that only water should be in your child’s water bottle. We have milk available if they prefer.

Spare clothing

An urgent request for any spare clothing you can donate to nursery. Our clothing stocks have dwindled and need replenishing. Please can you help? As always we would be most grateful.

Travelling Nativity

This week we will be starting sending home our Travelling Nativity sack. We start early to make sure that everyone has a chance to journey to the stable with us. It contains the story of The First Christmas, candles and some figures so that your child can act out the story that you have read together. Also in the sack this year there will be a Journey to the stable reflection book. We would love your child to draw a representation of the story in the book. Remember to write your child’s name on the page so we can share the reflections at school.

We would be grateful if you could send some images of your child using the story sack for our Worship book. If you send them from your phone we will print them here. Enjoy!!

Children in Need

Next Friday (15th November) we will be collecting for Children in Need. The children are invited to come to nursery in their pyjamas, bring along a teddy and pay £1!!! All proceeds will go to Brian House Children’s Hospice. Please give them your support.

Parent Drop in session

This half we will be holding our drop in session on Tuesday 19th November 3.45-4.45 pm. This is an opportunity just for you to come to nursery and see what we have been learning. It will also give to chance to chat to the nursery team . Please try and bob in to see us.

Number 1

This week we met number 1. We discovered the concept of ‘oneness’. One is a single unit. If one is the quantity then what is being counted is arbitrary, and the size of the one thing counted is also arbitrary, e.g. one sun or one ant- there is one of each even though the sun is bigger than an ant.

One is represented as a Numberblock, as a finger, familiar things, as a spoken word, as a movement (one hop), as a numeral. Related words for oneness, e.g. first and alone.

During this episode there is opportunity to attach the number name ‘one’ to a single unit.

We use ‘one’ in multiple situations, e.g.

• The answer to ‘how many…?’

• One is the amount

• One is the quantity

• First means position one

• Once means one time

  We encourage the children to use a stem sentence to talk about a single unit, e.g. “ I see one apple.”

Click here to meet one and everything will make sense! In this episode a little block falls out of the sky, meets her numberling, ONE, and discovers one wonderful world of numerous single things that appear during the song. One also sings about being first in line and being lonely.

Year 4 Weekly blog Friday 8th November, "Look well into yourself. There is a source of strength which will always spring up if you will always look there." (Marcus Aurelius)

What an exciting week we have had! There have been so many rich lessons and learning going on that I decided to put it in a video below.

We began the week in worship, remembering those who gave their lives for our freedom and their great strength. In our Happy Mind lesson the children completed a survey to find out what their top strengths were. They have made ‘top trump’ cards displaying their top 5 strengths and there is a copy of the survey they took in their homework books so you can celebrate them with them. We stressed that we all have a mixture of strengths - like pick n mix sweets, you may have more of one type than another.

In RE, children have learned what a prophet is and have been finding out about the prophet Elijah. This has really helped them understand one of our virtues this half term, what it means to be ‘prophetic’ - a person God chooses to give His message to the people.

Our Science was so exciting this week - first the children learned all about the 3 states of matter. Then on Tuesday they explored this further at UCLAN by looking at changing states, understanding acids, alkalis and becoming cosmetic chemists for the day!

Maths too has seen us go out and about to find out exactly what 1kilometre length feels like. We went for a walk around the block, measuring the distance - we actually only walked 580metres but it gave them a real sense of 1000m = 1km which was the aim. We are looking at being able to read measures on jugs, scales and metre sticks by understanding portions of 1000 - when it is split into two equal parts, four equal parts, ten equal parts or five equal parts.

We had an excellent gymnastics lesson where children assessed each other on their sequences that they had put together. We also launched our History topic Ancient Egyptians..

In English, we are over half way through our novel. Children have made their own points and backed them up with evidence. They have also learned the important grammar skill of describing characters and objects using extended noun phrases.

Travelling Nativity Over the next few weeks, you child will come home with our travelling nativity. It has a lovely story in called ‘The Shepherd Girl’ that you can share together. Year 6 Weekly Blog: “Lest We Forget"

At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them… this week is always a poignant week as we stop and remember all of those fallen victims of war and conflict. Our focus of the week has been on the word ‘Remembrance’. We have designed and created our own poppies and yesterday we reflected on previous wars and wrote poetry in response. 

“Christ has no body on earth now but yours, no hands but yours, no feet but yours are the eyes through which he looks with compassion on the world; yours are the feet with which he walks to do good; yours are the hands with which he blesses all the world” St Teresa of Avila.

In worship this week, we have reflected on this quote and how it relates to our two virtues: Intentional and Prophetic. We have spoken about what these virtues mean and how we can be intentional in the choices we make and the ethical code we live by, choosing to live how God wants us to…

The week has flown by and we have done so much exciting and challenging learning. We have read more of our class novel this week, looked at the remaining Tudor Monarchs after Henry VIII and started our Geography unit on volcanoes and mountains with Mrs Hotchkiss. 

Our Mathematics this week has been on fire, balancing equations and using redistribution to find unknowns in expressions!Very impressive!

Travelling Nativity

Our Travelling Nativity has started it journey visiting your homes. It is yours to keep for one night only (unless you get it on a Friday) and then you must return it to Year 6. Please make sure that it is completely ready for another friend to enjoy the next day.

You will find instructions in the sack, with a journal to reflect on the story through words and drawings. If you would like to share this moment through a picutre, then please feeel free to take a picture and email it to me. Enjoy celebrating the birth of Christ at home with one another, it is such a special time.

Well done to Rafe and Niamh this week.

Intentional and Prophetic butterflies

This half term we will be on the lookout for all the children that are intention in their actions. Children who make conscious decisions for the greater good. We will also be spotting children who are prophetic, who choose the right decisions with integrity and who display them publically. These children are the role models of the school. Year 5 Weekly Blog 08.11.24- ‘To live in hearts we leave behind is not to die’

What an action packed week it has been for only our second week back after half term. After first recognising the 24 character strengths of the ‘Celebrate’ module of my happy mind, the children were tasked with the job of reenacting one of the 6 chosen virtues- collaborating these 24 character strengths with a little role play. Later in the week, we got to compare our chosen reflections of our own personal strengths to the official ‘My Happy Mind Character Strengths Test’ online.

The main focus of the week came on Tuesday morning with our class assembly. With not so much time to prepare for this, the children showed lots of courage, flexibility and determination leading up to and on the day of the assembly. The theme of the morning really was portrayed excellently by the children and how teamwork and kindness should look both in and out of the classroom- now it is time to put this into action in our day to day schooling life.

On Wednesday, this saw us go out into the community to complete our first trip as the eco-council of the school. We took the short walk to Beauclerk Gardens for a bulb planting session with the Fylde Rangers. The children were eager to put the work in straight away with us planting over 200 bulbs in just 1 hour!

In English, it has been all things relative clauses this week with the children grasping a really good understanding of what these are and how to apply this creatively to our writing. I am excited to see these being used in our next creative writing piece.

In Maths, we have now breached into a new place value column- hundredths. We used physical representations to compare the value of this to tenths and ones.

• Geography: We have looked at lines of longitude and latitude this week. Discuss with your parents when you have been abroad on holiday. Do they remember the time difference compared to the UK?

Let’s Celebrate

Virtue Star of the Week: Our virtue star of the week goes to Tilly. You are such a calming presence in the class Tilly and you are such a kind friend. When one of your closest friends needed help this week, you didn’t panic or stress. You calmy found your class teachers and helped to really defuse potentially stressful situation. Thank you so much for this.

William for being a focused learner: Managing distractions is such a tricky challenge to overcome, especially as a nine year old, and yet you manage to do this with ease and ignore those around you who could cause you a distraction. Keep being a role model to both our Year 1 children and for your Year 5 classmates.

Hugo for being a co-operative learner: You were not just chosen to represent in the school for the football tournament because of your ability but because of your attitude and maturity shown to sporting activities this year Hugo. Even when the games weren’t going our way or you were waiting to come on, you didn’t moan or sulk, you just got on with it. Another role model to the class on how to behave in sporting activities.

Year 5 Weekly Blog 01.11.24- The more you celebrate your life, the more there is in life to celebrate'

What a first week back it has been! The start of our longest half term of the year has begun and it has flown by. It has been a slightly different week, with Mrs Harrison taking the class for the first three days of the week. During this, the children have been doing lots of reading into our class novel with the us coming towards the end of the fantastic story. They have also started their new grammar topic of relative clauses and looking at different ways we can add extra information to our main clauses.

We also began our next module of My Happy Mind which is all about celebrating our minds and focusing what we are good at. We did this by analysing the 24 character strengths that we all have and self-reflected on which strengths we possess the most of.

In Maths, to prepare for our money topic, we have been looking over our place value of going smaller than ones. We have looked at the relationship of ones and tenths and how we can represent this in various representations. The week has also been heavily focused on preparing for our class assembly, with the children jumping straight into script reads, drama and singing. This will be performed on Tuesday 5th November at 9:15am and 9:35am.

We began our first Geography topic of the year with the focus being on the world map and the countries within. We started by recapping our knowledge of the worlds continents and oceans and linked our previous holiday destinations to a world map. We then finished off by testing the children’s knowledge of flags- especially those who have very similar flags to close by nations.

Virtue Star of the Week: Our virtue star of the week goes to Beth. This week you have taken your own time in your breaks to help organise other children’s book folders- to make sure that they are not scrunched or folded. The children really did appreciate this and it was such a thoughtful thing to do.

Lilly for being a focused learner: Your attitude towards your learning is always spot on Lilly, even when we have changed our seats- your focus has still been at the level we expect of upper juniors. Excellent work.

Year 4 Weekly blog Friday 8th November, "The greatest architecture is the building of character."

It has been a lovely first week back in Year 4. Children have moved on to the Celebrate’ unit in ‘My Happy Mind.’ Children have started to notice their key character strengths and also those of others. We have been strength spotting all week!

In RE, children learned about Joseph in Egypt and reflected on how God brought good out of evil and joy from sadness. They then wrote a lovely prayer about their own faith, hope and love.

In maths, we have been working with manipulating multiples of 100 up to 2,000. Now we are understanding this in the context of measures. This linked really well to our Science—as we have moved on to the topic of States of Matter. This week we were thinking about how all matter has mass and volume and using our measuring skills.

We have finished our French unit on describing by doing descriptions of our friends—their height, hair colour, eye colour and personality. In Geography we have learned about time zones and analysed what time it will be in different countries comparing with GMT.

In English, children have learned about formal and informal language. They have been doing some performance reading and have learned how to write dialogue. They have also learned how to justify their own opinion about events in stories.
