With what usually tends to be a slow month, November has flown by as we enter the first week of Advent. A month of celebration and togetherness but we start week by week with ‘Hope’. It was wonderful for our children to start our advent preparations with a beautiful liturgy this week, with some wonderful scripture and song choice. Moving forward, we made our advent promises on a nativity star in which we thought about how we can be hopeful this year and intentional towards God.
In English, we have been analysing our main character, Prince Llewelyn, in our legend story and looking how his emotions change throughout the story. We have then applied this to writing a diary entry as the prince himself.
In Geography, we have continued with looking into biomes and have used a map to compare these across continents of the world.
This week, we have also finished our last hall practice session for our KS2 Christmas concert as we have practiced all of our songs in our booklet. Now it is about transferring this onto the altar and getting off script with our songs. We will be walking down to church weekly now for our weekly practices so it is vital that the children have coats and gloves during these very chilly conditions. Two groups of children have also been battling conditions this week and have been putting in the hard yards during some woodchip manual work, in order to get our forest school up and ready. Both Mrs Tierney and Mrs Lavelle could not praise the children more on how hard they worked and how much weight of woodchip collectively they managed to get through.
Conversation starters
My Happy Mind: We put our memories to the test by trying to memorize all 24 character strengths and placing them into their virtues. How many of the 24 strengths can you remember?
Geography: We have looked at biomes and climates to compare different environments of the world. If you could live in any part of the world, where would you live and why?
Let’s Celebrate
Virtue Star of the Week: Our virtue star this week goes to Tommy. You have such a sweet heart Tommy. You are such a valued member of the class and this week you have been so active around the classroom, always offering to help out with any of the adults’ tasks which has been so lovely of you. Your helping hand will be very much appreciated during this busy period of the year.
Daisy for being a determined learner: When it comes to independent writing tasks, you are a woman on a mission Daisy. You are so determined to make sure your work is of the highest quality and you take pride in your work. This has been seen this week as you have started your second book and we compared the changes in your handwriting since September. It was pleasing for me to see this and even more so for yourself. Well done!
Seth for being a enthusiastic learner: Both myself and Mrs Barker have seen a big improvement from you this week Seth. Your hand has been shooting up which shows your eagerness to contribute towards our learning. This has also been seen in your independent work as you have been working on managing your distractions. Keep this up!

Homework: Make sure to check the homework blog and make sure homework is handed in on time.
Coats: Now the weather is starting to drop and we edge closer towards winter, can all children have a coat with them to make sure they are protected when out at break times.
Travelling Nativity: Please enjoy the wonderful story of the nativity with your child when you receive this. This needs to be brought back into school the following day to allow another child to share this joy. You can take a picture of your child with the nativity and send me this via email.
Christmas Cards: To keep inline with our eco responsibilities and to remain sustainable, could we ask not to bring whole class Christmas cards and instead the children make 1 card which is for the whole class. These cards will then go onto our advent worship table.
Own Clothes Day: To celebrate the arrival of December and the festive period, then children can wear their own clothes and also donate a bar of chocolate for the Christmas Raffle. This will take place on Friday 29th November.
This will be the same on Friday 6th December but it will be bring a bottle. This can be a bottle of anything that could go into our hampers and considered a prize such as alcohol, bubble baths, sweets in a jar etc.
KS2 Christmas Film Night: If you would like to watch a Christmas film after school, with your friends, with popcorn, hotdogs and hot chocolates, then head over to Mrs Gregan’s blog to book this.
Christmas Bake Off: Last year went so well, we just had to do it again! All things Christmas with cakes, bakes and jumpers on Friday 13th December.
KS2 Christmas Concert: This will take place at Church on Monday 16th December. The children will perform the concert twice at 2pm and 6pm.
KS2 Christmas Party Day: Wednesday 18th December
Half Term: School will close at 2pm on Friday 20th December for half term. School will reopen on Monday 6th January.

The children have been working so hard and learning so well this week in Year 4. During our Happy Mind session this week, they reflected in their journals on which strength they could grow and get better at - thinking of ways they could do this. In RE sessions the focus has been on preparing for Advent and understanding what it is. On Thursday, children made their Advent promises - their own gift to Jesus this Advent season.
Maths this week has seen us decompose all 4 digit numbers in different ways. Children have compared and ordered these numbers and are now learning to round to the nearest thousand, hundred or ten. They have really worked their socks off on this.
Our Science this week was all about condensation. Children learned that this is the opposite of evaporation and they observed a cold can of coke, which after a while began to form tiny droplets on the outside of the can in our warm classroom.
In English this week we have moved onto a unit about Fairy Tales. We are busy analysing different versions of the Pied Piper and using lots of our grammar skills to experiment with different types of sentence starts and description. WE will soon be writing our own fairy tale based on this. We have also started our new novel - The Butterfly Lion and children are already intrigued.
In History this week, children were interpreting evidence which told us about the everyday lives of Ancient Egyptians and their status in society. We have started studying our French unit on clothes where children are beginning to understand French masculine, feminine and plural noun agreement!
Add to this lots of singing for our concert and a cracking PE lesson on Tueday - and all in all it has been a really super week!
Here are a few photos showing our lovely worship led by these three children and also some children practising their ‘Going for Gold’ times tables facts:
Here some beautiful photos of our children enjoying their travelling nativity. Thank you for taking the time to reflect and to send these in.
CONVERSATION STARTERS:
1. Have a look around your house. Can you see examples of evaporation and condensation in action? Why is the ground frosty in the morning at the moment? When your kettle boils - can you see gas come out - or can you see liquid?
2.My Happy Mind - this week, pick a strength every morning that you wish to demonstrate that day. At the end of the day when you go to bed, think about if you used it well and how it made you feel.
Let’s Celebrate!

This week...
Each week seems to be getting busier and busier at the moment! I can’t believe we have been at nursery for one term already!! Looking at the calendar the next couple of weeks are going to be even more hectic, starting with our Christmas Nativity next week. This years production is called ‘Follow the Star’, we hope you enjoy it.
Worship
Thank you to everyone who has sent in pictures of their child enjoying the Travelling Nativity. There are some fabulous drawing depicting the Christmas story too!
Next week we will be journeying through Advent together. We would like to start by learning this song (to the tune of Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star), maybe you could help at home.
Advent is a time to wait (hold hand up as you say “wait”)
Not quite time to celebrate, (shake head and wag finger from side to side)
Light candles one by one, (put 4 fingers up, one at a time)
Till Advent time is done. (wave hands, palm down)
Day by day we work and pray, (put fist on top of fist, back and forth)
To prepare for Christmas day! (give yourself a hug)
As a group we will be reflection on:
How we can get ready at home?
How we can get ready at school?
How we can get ready for Jesus?
Don’t forget to join us at our family Mass this Sunday at Our Lady Star of the Sea church. We would love to see you all there.
Emma’s blog
Hello everyone.
What a wonderful week of fun and learning we have had.
We have had so much fun this week in PE with Mr. Murray. He has been teaching us how to bounce a large ball, and throw it up into the air without letting it roll away. We dropped the ball from our hands, letting the ball bounce at our feet before trying to catch it. As you can imagine, balls were flying everywhere! Mr. Murray also asked the children to run around the outside of a big circle, and he would shout out 'change' and the children had to turn and run the other way…very confusing. Mr. Murray made it tricky by randomly shouting ‘change’, the children loved the challenge.
To continue our learning thread about our body, and to link numbers 1 and 2, we have been looking at pictures of everyone’s eyes and mouths (and other body parts, have we got one or have we got two?). We showed the children pictures of just the eyes and mouths of the friends and nursery ladies, we had to work out who was who. It was very tricky. We talked about how some things are the same, and how some things are different, for example, different/same coloured eyes or different shaped mouths, different skin tones and how we all have one nose and two eyes etc.
We have been very busy rehearing for our Nativity. The children have worked so hard, and we are looking forward to performing it to you all next week.
Here is a story about the Nativity. Click here.
Have a lovely weekend. Rest up, ready for our big performances next week.

Hello everyone and welcome to this week's blog
We have had such a busy week as we have enjoyed singing our Nativity songs ready for next week. We can't wait to join Reception in telling the very special story of the first Christmas. We have loved seeing all your photos of the travelling nativity that you have shared with us. Thank you so much for taking care to send it back to nursery the next day. This means we can make sure every family will have a turn before the end of term.
We have been busy little elves this week but sorry, it's all top secret at the moment. You will just have to be patient and wait and see what we have been up to.
We have also continued learning about our bodies. This week we have learnt about our lungs. We watched a video about a little boy with asthma and it explained how our lungs work. Click here.
We then did a painting using our lungs, not a paintbrush. We used straws to blow the paint.
We have included some photos of the hail storm we had last week as we were too late to include them in the blog.
See you all next week and have a lovely weekend
Michelle
Christmas Cards
As in previous years, and in our ongoing commitment to look after God’s wonderful earth, we ask that the children do not send cards to everyone on nursery. If they would like to make one at home to send to everyone at nursery that would be fabulous!
Christmas Party
Key Stage 1 and Foundation Christmas party is being held on 19th December 9.30-11.30 am. All the children are invited to join us but if it is not your child’s usual session could you please arrange for them to be collected at 11.30 am. We will be baking a special birthday cake for Baby Jesus to eat at the party!!! Mmmmmmm!
Visit to Clarence House care home
On Wednesday 11th December we will be visiting Clarence House Rest Home. We will be joining Reception (in two small groups) to take some cards and decorations we have made to help spread some Christmas cheer. We may even sing a couple of our Christmas songs.
If you do not want your child to take part in this visit could you please let me know a.s.a.p.
Lastly, I thought I would just mention that after years of Nativities, it helps the children if they do not see you in the audience. If you sit where you can see them and they can’t see you it will limit the chances of them getting upset or distracted. Thank you.
I hope to see you all at Family Mass on Sunday.
Stay safe and God Bless
Barbara

It is hard to believe that we are now coming up to the first week of Advent, the week of Hope. After a turbulent year which we see daily through the news, there is comfort to be found when we pause to read, pray, and reflect over the course of the Advent season in which we eagerly anticipate the celebration of Christ’s birth. The first Sunday of Advent gives us the opportunity to centre our thoughts on hope. It's a beautiful chance to remember the hope God offers our world, and what He's given us through Jesus. We will be celebrating advent alongside our Reception buddies on Thursday 12th November at church. Please, if you are available, it would be lovely for you to walk down with us and join us in prayer. We will be setting off from school at 9:10 ready for mass at 9:30am.
Hope, this week, has been at the forefront of our liturgies and RE lessons, as we continue our unit of work on Justice and the refugee crisis. We have now moved on to the study of significant people that have stood up to these injustices and the hope this gives us for a better world.
DANCE FESTIVAL INFORMATION
Wow what a show our dancers put on this Tuesday- we are so proud of them! We had a great day at the Winter Gardens, Blackpool, for the annual Fylde and Wyre Dance Fesitval. The children were fantastic ambassadors of Our Lady’s from start to finish. They worked together so beautfully to perform a fantastic dance, with such enthusisasm and commitment. Thank you also to all our parents for coming to watch and support us. What an experience to perform to a large audience on such an iconic stage- a memory some of our dancers will never forget!

What a busy but lovely week we have had! we are well under way with our Christmas preparations for our carol concert in church and we have been doing so much exciting learning!
Our RE lessons this week were firstly focused on John the Baptist and understanding why he was important. We then looked at how he linked to another prophet Isaiah - in prophesying Jesus’ coming. This led us beautifully to start thinking about the season of Advent and what it entails.
Our Science this week was all about evaporation. Excitedly, the children made a puddle outside and even in this cold, it had evaporated within 1 hour! We carried out an experiment in class to see if water would evaporate more quickly if it was in a container with a larger surface area.
Maths has seen us solve one and two step problems using bar modelling and our understanding of measures. Children are more readily able to convert now between eg m to km or g to kg. We are now moving onto numbers to 10,000 comparing and ordering them.
In English, we have finally finished our novel. It was bittersweet and all children have now quizzed on this book which gave them some major Accelerated reader points!
Here are a few photos of our week:
CONVERSATION STARTERS:
1. What is evaporation? Can you think of any examples in nature?
2.My Happy Mind - this week, you can talk about Which strength would you like to build further?
Let’s Celebrate!
This week, our learning certificates are as follows:
Lettie received a Sadie Spider certificate. You are such a hard worker Lettie which really showed in your persuasive letter! You were brilliant with maths problems too this week!
George L also received a Sadie Spider certificate. You have become such a good listener and you have become so much more productive too! I can see you striving to get better and better!
Our virtues this half term are intentional and prophetic - intentional in choosing right choices and standing out for what is good. This week Mia-Grace received our star. You are always so willing to help out everyone Mia-Grace. You just love to give to others.
Flute stars this week: Lettie and Fletcher

Year 6 Weekly Blog - 'Accept the challenges so that you can feel the exhilaration of victory.'
In this week’s liturgy, we reflected on the gospel and the word ‘king’. Jesus refers to His Kingdom not being of this world. We reminded ourselves of our previous RE topic of where the Kingdom of God is and what it looks like. We shared how God’s kingdom is within each of our hearts, and we have to let this Kingdom shine through. We then discussed what Jesus was like as a king and how we can be kings today- what type of leader would He want us to be?
And in the blink of an eye…another week in Year 6 has passed. From the minute that the children walk into class in the morning to the moment that they walk out of the door, they are constantly learning and challenging themselves to be the best that they can be. It really astounds me just how much work that the children have completed. As we approach Advent, and the birth of Jesus Christ, we continue to strive to be Intentional and Prophetic in our actions, which are our two virtues this half term. Today, we made our advent promises ready for the whole class display, thinking about the ways we can prepare ourselves and our hearts ready for the birth of Christ.
Learning is always fast paced in Year 6 and this week has been no exception. This week in Maths we have been adjusting the calculations to be more efficient and accurate. We have been analysing our class novel and creating a toolkit ready for our writing next week. In science, we have looked at anomalies in data and learning about why these may happen. This half term, our RE topic is such a reflective unit of work, as we ask the children to reflect on the injustices within our world today. They are often surprised that some of the situations still occur. We spent today reflecting on a poem about the plight of refugees in our world. Why not read the poem and see what you think?
They have no need of our help
So do not tell me
These haggard faces could belong to you or me
Should life have dealt a different hand
We need to see them for who they really are
Chancers and scroungers
Layabouts and loungers
With bombs up their sleeves
Cut-throats and thieves
They are not
Welcome here
We should make them
Go back to where they came from
They cannot
Share our food
Share our homes
Share our countries
Instead let us
Build a wall to keep them out
It is not okay to say
These are people just like us
A place should only belong to those who are born there
Do not be so stupid to think that
The world can be looked at another way.
Now read the poem backwards. What a powerful poem with a really significant meaning. The discussion around this and the empathy the children showed was so humbling, what a group of compassionate children you have. Following this lesson, the children have started to write their own poems about refugees.
DANCE FESTIVAL INFORMATION
The time is here and we have now finished our dance, we are so excited to share it with you all. Here are the arrangements for next Tuesday …
Costumes should now be at school, left at school ready for rehearsals on Monday and to take to the Winter Gardens on Tuesday- this will avoid any left behind on the day!
We will leave school at 1pm by coach to the Winter Gardens, where 3 members of staff will be taking the group and staying with them in to the evening. The children will be there all afternoon, to allow time to practice and go through the show. Therefore, they will need to bring a packed lunch for their evening meal. Snacks throughout the event are welcomed, but please no sweets/ chocolate and no fizzy drinks, although one juice is permitted. As it is a long afternoon, with waiting time, please feel free to pack a good book, any homework to complete and maybe a puzzle/ colouring book to keep them busy (no electrical devices or anything of value). Children will not be able to see any of the audience before or during the show.
Once the show has finished, children will then go backstage to collect their belongs and then we will take them to our school’s pick up point outside Toyland Toyshop on Church street, so please meet us there. You will not be able to take your child until the end of the show, due to safeguarding and as it is etiquette to watch the other performers as they have watched you. Once the show has finished at the collection point, please make sure you tell us when you take your child, to ensure a safe transition as it does get very busy! I will have all mobile contact numbers in case there are any problems, so please ensure you have your mobiles with you on the night. Please fill in the form below to let us know who will be taking your child home on the evening:
Doors open to the public on the evening at 6pm- make sure you have your tickets. The anticipated finishing time is 9:30pm.
Children can wear their PE kits this day. Please make sure you pack plenty of water and if your child needs an inhaler, please ensure they have this. We will also do hair in the afternoon, so pack a brush!
Any questions or queries about the event, please just email.
