Dear Parents,
Year 4 children will be visiting the Grand on a few occasions in the next few weeks. We will be going for our storytelling festival on Monday 3rd Feb and also in March to perform our section of ‘The Tempest,’ on stage.
Please could you fill in the form below to give your consent about photographs? The Grand theatre has outlined what these are used for and I have added it to the form for you to read.
This weeks focus is common exception words - here’s the next set of these tricky words that we just need to learn…no patterns or special rules.
Reading
Reading targets have been reset, please listen to your child read at home for 15 minutes each night - it really does make a huge difference.
Purple Mash - Optional activities linked to our learning will be added to purple mash each week.
TT Rock Stars and Numbots - please encourage your child to log on to and practise number skills and times tables.
Spring 1 Optional homework - below is the link for this half term’s optional homework. These task link to our learning in class.

Read moreThis is to take place at Stanley Park Sports Centre, Blackpool, FY3 9HQ on Wednesday 15th January.
The event will start at 12:30pm-4:00pm
Children will have lunch in school as normal and will be taken to the sports centre via a coach- provided by school. The children will need to be picked up from Blackpool Sports Centre when the event finishes.
Children are to wear their PE kit and to have plenty of fluids. Water is highly recommended but the children are allowed an isotonic hydration drink.
Parents are welcome to come and watch the event

Here is our Spring 1 extra-curricular offer. Please click on the button below to see what is available and what your child can sign up for. If you child attends the All Stars Wrap Around Care at school and would like to take part in the clubs, please still complete the form so that we can amend registers. Children will be able to attend All Stars before of after the clubs.
As per previous terms, the Mini-Vinnie group will continue to run on a Monday after school and Choir on a Thursday whilst they prepare for The Big Sing at Lowther Pavillion on the 5th March. On a Tuesday after school, Mr Nay will be working with our All Stars children as part of our club offer there.

It was lovely to see all the children excited to see their friends and ready to learn again. We have dived straight back in!
CHANGES
There are some changes to the home learning. We now combine the spelling and handwriting together. We also introduce sentence dictations. This allows the children to listen, sound out and check over. In Maths we will be introducing fluency games to play at home. I’m just waiting for some training on this for myself and then I’ll introduce it to you and the children. This week we have a video explaining the bridging we are doing in class.
Please make reading your priority each evening. Allow your child to build up their fluency and please do read to them - this is were new words and worlds open up!

Spelling rule this week changing single nouns to plurals - change the y into i and add es.
Play “Ping Pong” You say and show the word single. Then the child says the plural and writes the plural - this time dropping the y and adding ies.

WHAT MY BOOK LOOKS LIKE
Before half term, the children were learning how to bridge through ten when adding two numbers. We broke down this process over a number of lessons. We revised it immediately on our return. Some children are finding it tricky and it highlights our need to have automacitiy with all number bonds for numbers below ten. I have made a film especially for you so you can see how we are recording the bridging process. You will see how, over time, and with lots of practice this bridging becomes a mental strategy.
We have glued the maths sheets into their book - if the book was in school. If not it has been handed to the child and placed in their bag.
Having explained all this - we have a number of children in class who can already mentally bridge through ten. For those children it would be good for them to continue with their numbots.

It has been a glorious week full of Christmas memories in year 4 this week! Monday saw us first engaging in worship around the gospel of great joy. This was followed by doing our Carol concert in church and I am sure you would agree, they gave us all goosebumps! The rest of the week has seen us have parties, do numerous festive crafts, make ice-cream, watch movies and have enrichment too. Far too many photos this week - so instead there is a video below of all the magic this week. There is also a special Christmas flute performance for your viewing pleasure.

This week, the children have voted for the certificate winners in class. They were asked to think of children who go above and beyond and demonstrate every learning character. It was tricky, as so many children do this in Year 4.
However, joint boy winners were Liam and Rodnie.
Rodnie it was said you have excellent focus and you participate fully in all learning. You are a super listener.
Liam, your friends said you are always so polite. You also have excellent focus. Your friends said you are friendly and kind.
Girls, it was close but our winner by one point was Phoebe. Your friends said you are always kind and you manage your distractions. They said every breaktime you help people!
To be chosen out of all the beautiful children in Year 4 is praise indeed! Well done.
Egyptian trip
On Thursday 16th January we are going to Bolton museum for an Egyptian workshop. The cost of the trip is £16 and it is payable on Parentpay. The children have simply adored this topic.

Read moreI cannot believe we have arrived at the end of the second half term! What a wonderful term it has been, as we switched our attention to Design and technology and structures. We have had such fun experimenting and exploring a range of techniques with a plethora of tools to create a range of models. From joining various materials using different techniques and resources , to produce a windmill and a chair. We have learned that a structure needs to be; strong, stiff and stable ( the three S’s) to be a viable structure. They have discovered that cylinders are stronger, stiffer and are more stable than other 3D shapes. Have a look at our paper cylinder chair that we made in groups! The children have been so enthusiastic to share their thoughts on processes, discuss why the three S’s are so important in construction.
It has been an absolute pleasure working with your children and I cannot wait for the New Year, where we turn our focus to painting and mixed-media!

I cannot believe we have arrived at the end of the second half term! What a wonderful term it has been, as we switched our attention to Design and technology and Textiles. The children have, followed a design criteria to plan, create and produce a soft, stuffed toy. Sewing is a very tricky skill and they have shown such resilience and determination to apply their new knowledge of blanket stitch to their work. The results were fantastic! We also had a snippet of time to have a go at some embroidery!
Next half term, we will be turning our attention to painting and mixed media and I cannot wait to see the wonderful work the children will produce! Please can you ensure your child has an art shirt in school, as we will be getting mucky!

I cannot believe we have arrived at the end of the second half term! What a wonderful term it has been, as we switched our attention to Design and technology and structures. We have had such fun experimenting and exploring a range of techniques with a plethora of tools to create a range of models. From joining various materials using different techniques and resources , to practicing our cutting skills with cooked spaghetti and shaped scissors! The children have been so enthusiastic to share their thoughts on processes, discuss why they have chosen certain resources and for what purpose. And to finish the half term, a sliding mechanism Nativity scene.
It has been an absolute pleasure working with your children and I cannot wait for the New Year, where we turn our focus to painting and mixed-media!

I cannot believe we have arrived at the end of the second half term! What a wonderful term it has been, as we switched our attention to Design and technology and Textiles. We have had such fun experimenting and exploring a range of techniques with a plethora of tools to create our Nativity hand puppets. From joining various materials using different techniques and resources , to practicing our cutting skills when working with fabric. The children have been so enthusiastic to share their thoughts on processes, discuss why they have chosen certain resources and for what purpose. And to finish the half term, we have learned to thread a needle and use running stitch to make a pouch.
It has been an absolute pleasure working with your children and I cannot wait for the New Year, where we turn our focus to painting and mixed-media!

I think you will all agree that Monday’s concert at church was so magical and a real thought-provoking evening for us all. We were so unbelievably proud of the children; the way they spoke and the way they sung was just beautiful - it really started Christmas for us all. Thank you for coming and joining us in this celebration.
Amidst all of these performances and our own rehearsals, the children have continued to work incredibly hard. We have have been analysing biographies, using adjusting to subtract decimals and large numbers and been learning all about networking in computing!
We finally finished our class novel ‘The Nowhere Emporium’ and I have to say it was most definitely worth waiting for! It was quite a dramatic ending with lots of emotion. I am sorry to those that missed the ending- please don’t worry you can borrow the book to finish after Christmas or if you can’t wait, I have attached the PDF below:
On Wednesday was our well-deserved Christmas Party, where we danced, played games and laughed …ALOT! It was so lovely to relax and enjoy this time together as a class, followed by a nice treat, relaxing in front of a film!
We loved meeting up with our reception partners on Tuesday to complete our pilgrimage, have a play and then listen to the Christmas Story in the chapel…
Thank you to all of the children for their hard work this term, make sure this Christmas you get plenty of rest and re-charge those batteries ready for a busy, hard-working next half term- they are more than ready!

I cannot believe we have arrived at the end of the second half term! What a wonderful term it has been, as we switched our attention to Design and technology and structures. We have had such fun experimenting and exploring a range of techniques with a plethora of tools to create and manipulate boxes and cartons to produce a castle out of junk. From joining various materials using different techniques and resources and constructing 3D shapes to form a part of the building. We have learned that a structure needs to be; strong, stiff and stable ( the three S’s) to be a viable structure. They have learned about the various parts of a castle and for what purpose they served. The children have been so enthusiastic to share their thoughts on processes, discuss why the three S’s are so important in the construction of buildings.
Next half term, we turn our attention to painting and mixed media, I cannot wait to work alongside the children to see what wonderful work they produce1 please can you ensure, your child has an art shirt in school, as we will get a bit mucky!

Read moreMy goodness, how the term has flown! I cannot thank you, the children and all the staff for making the All Stars Wraparound Care a huge success. We have had so much fun, both in the mornings and the evenings. From celebrating Divali to remembering the fallen for Remembrance. Christmas activities have been a plenty, ranging from making tree decorations, wreaths to decorating biscuits and writing letters to Santa, alongside and array of games. It certainly has been an action packed term! The children have been fantastic and we cannot thank them enough!

I cannot believe we have arrived at the end of the second half term! What a wonderful term it has been, as we switched our attention to Design and technology and Textiles. We have had such fun exploring the techniques of applique and cross stitch, with the outcome of designing, planning and making a cushion using the techniques learned, within the design criteria. The children have been so resilient, as sewing is such a tricky skill to learn. Their patience and determination in completing the tasks has been so humbling. We would like to thank the parent helpers, who came in to share their skills with the class. I know that the children found it a wonderful and helpful experience. Thank you so much for all your assistance!

I cannot believe we have arrived at the end of the second half term! What a wonderful term it has been, as we switched our attention to Design and technology and structures. We have had such fun experimenting and exploring a range of techniques with a plethora of tools to create a model playground. From joining various materials using different techniques and resources to construct 5 different apparatus using three different structural methods. We have learned that a structure needs to be; strong, stiff and stable ( the three S’s) to be a viable structure, along with it being safe and aesthetically pleasing. I was blown away with the fact that some of their structures had moving parts, as this was not part of the design criteria To finish the term, the children grouped together and designed and made a Nativity Crib for each class in school. They were truly beautiful and the teachers were so touched by their gesture.
I cannot wait until the New Year, where we turn our attention to Painting and Mixed- Media.
