Year 5 Weekly Blog 28.03.25- ' When we have been hurt, we cannot recover until we forgive'

What a glorious week it has been. The sun is shining, learning is flowing, Easter preparations are continuing and the children are in high spirits. This week was the first time we have practiced in the hall as we learn stage directions and adding that extra dramatic effect to our holy worship of Easter.

In RE, We have had some warmly discussions about the importance of forgiveness. We shared experiences of when there have been times when it has been hard to forgive and we have found it within ourselves to do so. We also talked about the consequences of lying and how that can impact both trust and forgiveness in the future.

This week, we have been learning…

• Maths- The children have been smashing short division this week, now tackling 4 digit by 1 digit numbers including lots of carrying and overall remainders.

• Science- we have been experimenting with water resistance and discussed how this impacts even our fun play in the water such as ways to jump into a swimming pool. We analaysed how the factors affecting water resistance change the outcome of three different types of jumps. We then replicated this on a smaller scale, using objects to act as these shapes.

• Geography- We have continued to use map grid references to precisely and have made this even more precise by introducing 6 figure gird references as opposed to 4 figures.

• PE- It was all about patience, carefulness and team strategy in the team games this week as we used our balancing and hand eye coordination techniques to complete team relays just using a tennis racket and bean bag.

Let’s Celebrate

Learning Certificate- Sean for being a focused and cooperative learner. Staying focused and determined throughout independent tasks can be tricky, especially in Year 5. However, you have no issues with this at all. You manage your distractions really well and you get your head down and are super focused on your work. You also work really well alongside your learning partners and you use this time wisely to share your thinking and reasoning skills.

Virtue Star of the Week- Our star of the week goes to Rose. You are such a generous person Rose, especially with our younger children. It really does bring a smile to my face when I see you saying hello and goodbye to our Year 1 and Reception children at break times. It just shows the bond you have created with them and how grateful they are to have you as a role model.

• Homework- Please check the homework blog to keep on track of your child’s SPAG, multiplication and division practice and also their reading.

• Wednesday 2nd April- School Photo Day. Children are to come into school in their school uniform. Any child who plays for the school netball and football teams, please bring your kit as well. There will be no PE on this day.

• Forest School- This will be starting on Friday 4th April. You will be sent a text the previous night to make aware who is doing this on which day as the class are split into groups. The children will just need to bring in a change spare of clothes- ones suitable for outdoor activities and working within a forest environment.

• Friday 4th April Reconciliation- Our Year 5 and 6 children will be given the opportunity for reconciliation by having confessions with our Father Peter in the lead to up to our lent preparations. This is usually done in high school but yourIf you would not like your child to participate then please let Mr Cornwell, Mrs Gregan or the school office know.
  

  If your child is likely to attend St Bedes High School. They are given the opportunity to make their sacrament of confirmation. We have been given the opportunity to do this when the children get to Year 6. Please complete the form below to choose which option you would like for your child.

This week...

A glorious week of learning and glorious weather!

We have planted meadow seeds throughout the garden, we think it will be the most colourful garden in St. Annes. We are also hopeful of some frog spawn, so we have made a pond in readiness!

We have also been writing ‘7’. Here’s the rhyme to help you at home - ‘a line in the air then down to the ground, that’s how lucky seven is found’.

I have sent home a fab science activity using Skittles sweets….the colours are the same as Luck number 7. Have a go at the experiment!!!

Duckling alert!!!

Duckings have hatched in Mrs. Hotchkiss’s class! On Tuesday and Wednesday we went to visit them.

Before we went we watched how a duckling hatched our of their egg. Everyone was amazed. Click here to watch at home.

When we arrived the ducklings were all have a swim in their pond. Everyone thought they were so very cute…especially when they were splashing around! Take a look.

Hello everyone.

It has been another fun packed week of learning and growing our brains. 

The children have been very busy creating their Easter cards this week. We used masking tape to make a cross on the card, and the children painted over the tape on to the card using a in a left to right motion. The children found this so tricky as they wanted to paint up and down, where as using another movement by going across the body whilst painting, engages different muscle groups. This enhances gross motor skills, the same dough as taking the dough across the body in dough disco.

Continuing with our thread learning on changes, we have been monitoring the weather using our weather wheels, and recording the results on our weather chart. We have noticed that that the sunshine column of the chart is currently the tallest at the moment. Let's hope it stays that way!

Hello everyone and welcome to this week's blog.

Spring has definitely arrived here at nursery as we have been very busy in the garden, planting, tidying and investigating. We are pleased to see we still have lots of worms in the garden. We have noticed the daffodils are still in full bloom.

We have been meteorologists this week, monitoring the weather using our water collection station. We were excited to find we had collected rain water, good for the garden. It must have rained during the night! We also have been predicting the weather; are we expecting some rain, sunshine, wind or a bit of thunder and lightening this weekend. We watched JoJo and Gran Gran checking the weather forecast, click here

Coffee Morning at the Social Centre

A group of children went the Social Centre last week. We all did some colouring and had a a drink and biscuit. It was such a treat!

Year 4 Weekly blog Friday 28th March "Be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another just as God, through Christ, has forgiven you.

What a delight your children have been this week. On Tuesday, they made their first confession in church and I know they were so reflective upon themselves. It was a beautiful service and they sang like angels.

On Monday, we had our trip to Gawthorpe hall where children took part in many tasks to find out more of Shakespearean England. They learned that many of our words were invented by Shakespeare, They put the events of his life in order and also handled artefacts from around this time - guessing what they were used for. Finally, they had a lesson in the art of sword-fighting on the grounds. They always take so much from their opportunities and learnt lots. It truly is a pleasure taking them anywhere!

This week in English, children have ranked the characters from Brer Rabbit in order of cleverness, justifying their opniions with 3 examples from the text. They have then really revised all grammar skills learned so far -and also learned two new ones - similes and complex sentences using adverb starters. Also, this week we finished our touching story, The Butterfly Lion and children wrote about the parts of the lion’s life (using extended noun phrases)

In History, this week, children have discovered for themselves who was buried at Sutton Hoo, Suffolk by examining the evidence. They have also used evidence of place names to find out which local towns were once Anglo-Saxon - therefore discovering where they settled.

This half term are virtues are Grateful and Generous . Grateful for themselves, for others and for their experiences in life and generous to others. This week Ava receives the star for being so generous. You always have time for people Ava and help others out - also she raised £68 for Encephalitis UK. WOW!

Year 6 Weekly Blog' During the season of lent contemplate your heart and look at your world with hope'

Earlier this week we attended mass as part of our journey through lent and preparation for the resurrection. This was a beautiful time spent with our reception partners and the nursery children, spent in deep prayer and reflection.

We have had another successful week in Year 6, where they have worked so hard and reflecting on their learning constantly. The children have recieved more feedback on previous papwers and now have a very clear idea on the areas they need to work on and what they may want to revise. They have now got English and Maths revisions folders and books, which they can take to and from school to help them revise and prepare, but please can you ensure that these come abck to school every day as they will need them. Next week, revision material will be available to children to choose areas they might want to do extra work on, they will not be marked but they can use the material to aid their revision should they wish to, it is completely optional but we want to eqipt them as much as possible.

What have we been learning this week?

English - This week our focus has been on srevising the spelling of singular and plural nouns. We have also looked at the use of apostrophes in possession and the rules for singular and plural nouns.

Maths - We have now completed our fraction work and now we can all add, subtract, multiply and divide fractions! We have started moving on to percentages, which the children have already a good handle on!

PE- We have loved our PE this week, practising our fore and backhand in tennis! We have even started our Resurrection assembly and can’t wait to share this with you!

Year 6 have started their clubs this week and goodness me have I been proud of them! They have all been extrmemely well organised and engaging for our younger children!

Don’t forget to keep encouraging children to read as much as possible and to ocmplete their homework, to have it on time- good practice for next year! Grateful and Generous stars…

This half term we will be on the lookout for all the children that show our two virtues of the half term in their actions. Children who show gratitude for all of their own and other people’s gifts- also regarding other people as precious gifts themsleves, reflecting our school’s mission statement. We will also be spotting children who are generous, who show generosity in their service for others. These children are the role models of the school. This week we have our normal spelling sheets, with our rule to practise too.

Maths

It is time to really ramp up the times tables practice.

This week children have a timed test to do in their homework books. They are used to doing these in class and will tell you how to conduct it. We will be giving these regularly.

In TT Rockstars, there is a section called SOUNDCHECK. This emulates the official times tables test children will get in June. Please practise soundcheck once a day at least. Also keep working to keep the heatmaps green.

In multi-player mode there is ROCKSLAM. I keep setting a challenge for children to beat me - they like that! This keeps things fresh and exciting. They can also challenge each other.

STUDIO is where they can work on their rock status -we already have some rock legends!

Year 2 Home Learning to be handed in Monday 31st March

LINES TO LEARN

Welcome Year 2 to the Easter Assembly story! Each Year each class form Year 2 to Year 6 takes one part of the Easter story and performs an assembly one each day over a week. Together we tell the story to the whole class and it is wonderful for everyone especially our youngest children. The assemblies help us to piece together the events of Jesus final days and his glorious reresection.

Year 2, we have the job of producing the opening assembly- telling the story of Palm Sunday (Monday 7th April). We have already started staging the play. We have limited time in the hall so it is super important that you know your line and who you come after before this Friday. We all have a line to learn. I have given everyone a copy of the script to take home and I have attached the script here too in case it is mislaid. Remember to practice with your biggest voice. I have also attached the song we are learning which we sing at the end “The Lord of the Dance”

MATHS- GAMES

I have given the children a copy of the maths games WEEK 3 of 5 on card and the instructions and diary. A massive thank you to parents who completed the diary last time (printing it out at home) and giving some feedback. Have fun with these. I’ve attached here again just incase the pack is mislaid.

HANDWRITING AND SPELLING

When marking I have noticed a join the children are struggling with - this is the r. I have given the children a practice sheet with this join (attached below too). I have also chosen 5 red word to learn. These are “words for life” they also have the r join in them. Ask your child to show you how we learn these spelling in school using a piece of paper folded into quarters. We write the word (correctly): then copy; then fold and hid to spell without looking; then we finally write it with our eyes closed.

Year 5 Weekly Blog 21.03.25- ‘Every choice has a consequence. Once you make that choice, you must accept responsibility’

Another week has flown by as we approach the halfway point in our Lenten journey- I hope you have been earning those pennies in your Lenten boxes. In preparations for Easter week, the children have been given their scripts for the Easter assembly with all children knowing their roles and their lines.

Is it important that during this holy yet stressful period of the year, we remember that all of our actions have consequences. Everything we say and do and how we do it has an impact on someone else- both positive and negative. This has been our focus in RE this week, known as the ‘Ripple Effect’. These teachings allow us to reflect more on our choices, knowing what impact these have on those around us and then everyone else indirectly.
