This week the children have been learning the story of ‘Where the Wild Things are’ off by heart, using a story map. We have put actions to the words so that the children can retell the story with enthusiasm and expression
Read moreREADING - How often is your child quizzing? Do they bring their books home every night? Are they reading every night? It is the responsibility of children to make sure they quiz if they finish their book in school as they get reading time to do this every day. Please keep reading EVERY night at home. It is important to read alongside an adult, where they can ask questions about the text and you can discuss events that happen in the book.
SPELLING-One more week to practice these tricky spellings:
Might Doesn’t Probably Maybe Library Circle
Think about the different ways I have given you to learn these spellings- which one do you like best? Which one works best for you?
GRAMMAR
In class we are starting to learn about how we can change our sentence structures and how we can make complex sentences. We are looking at what a subordinate clauses? Subordinate clauses are different to main clauses as they do not make sense of their own- usually because they have a subordinating conjunction within them, such as ‘although’ ‘before’ ‘which’. Please can the children complete the worksheets in their books, adding a main clause to each of the subordinate clauses. Can they spot the subordinate conjunction? Can they circle it on the sheet if they can find it?
MATHS - The children have been working hard on crossing boundaries when adding and subtracting. Please can the children use the partitioning method (Method B from last week) to calculate the following calculations in their books:
Spelling - all of our words end in cious.
conscious, delicious, malicious, ferocious, vicious, precious, spacious, gracious, unconscious, luscious
For each word, can you include it in a complex sentence that is made up of a subordinate and main clause?Write 10 sentences in your book.
Maths - complete the Rapid Reasoning questions in your book.
Science/English - In the Wizard of Oz, we have seen that Dorothy’s house is destroyed by a cyclone. But what is a cyclone? Produce a piece of research as a poster, PowerPoint or in your book that answers these questions.
What is a cyclone?
When and where do cyclones form?
What are the types of cyclones?
Features of a cyclone.
Cyclone safety
Spellings - we tried giving out spellings on slips of paper last week in the hope they were then ready to stick on fridges, memo boards or on walls ready for practising them however this plan failed when several were lost or eaten by the tray monsters in our classroom! So spellings will be listed on here and the homework page each Monday, these will then be tested the following Monday.
This week our spellings are
they
reign
weight
obey
neighbour
freight
eighth
eight
sleigh
build
height (same letters eigh but different sound so be careful)
island
Thank you for your continued support.

The Big Bad Wolf this week has been replaced with Captain Hook and Super Heroes!
Read moreWe have been totally captivated by Mary Poppins and classic fiction this week. The magic of the story and the way it makes us feel has really contributed to such exciting lessons this week. The children started off by looking at what makes a classic text - there was definitely opinions on this topic. For homework, the children have been asked to look at whether Harry Potter is a classic, they will be writing a balanced discussion text on Monday. The majority of the week has been spent looking at the differences between the text and the film. The children have loved watching the film and the setting of Cherry Tree Lane, they have explored language and have written some exciting setting descriptions. Next week, we will be continuing to read Mary Poppins and also starting to explore The Wizard of Oz. Amongst all of the English, we have continued to: look at decimals, started work on shape and angles, been taxonomists in science (classifying food and animals) creating databases, learning more about the UK in geography and creating a beautiful storyboard about The Last Supper for our Year 3 Holy Communion children.
We finished off Thursday afternoon combining geography and OAA skills with some maths. I set the children an orienteering course around the grounds of the school, answering maths questions at each point. It was so much fun seeing the children run around and absolutely nail the math questions as well.
Learning Awards
This week, there has been so much exciting learning and a lot of children have been really active; pushing themselves above and beyond!
Sophie has loved our Mary Poppins unit of work. When creating a setting description, Sophie really thought deeply about the reader and produced some great descriptive sentences.
Ryan is a shape king. He fired up in maths this week when discussing angles. Ryan really drew on previous knowledge which is so important in Year 6.
Reuben another focused mathematician this week. He is really paying close attention to detail to be the best that he can be.
For the next two weeks, we will be joined in class by Mr Lyons. I had the pleasure of teaching him a good few years ago and Mr Lyons will be joining us for some work experience. We look forward to welcoming him into our class family.
Reminders:

We have once again reached the end of another busy week in Year 2 where the children have amazed all members of staff with their curiosity and enthusiasm. With this term’s focus virtues being ‘curious and active’, the children are continually being challenged to ask deep questions in their learning and to play active roles in the world in which God gave to us.
Read moreI love this class! When I say Shakespeare they cheer! We have launched ourselves into the Taming of the Shrew this week and we have had so much fun! You will notice from the pictures that we are wrestling, arguing and it even looks like kicking! However do not worry, these are our excellent acting skills on show!
Read moreThis week we have been focused on our special story book, ‘The Queen’s Hat’. Would you believe that Her Royal Highness has written a letter to Reception? She was visiting St Annes when she lost her hat again! So, she wrote to the children to ask them if they had seen her hat. Many of them are sure they have seen it, with some of our children certain that a crown was spotted on their way home from school. Hopefully we can help the Queen and find her hat!
Certificates
Co-operative Roger Robin Amelia for… making such a great learning partner! I have loved watching and listening to you on the carpet with your partner. It is just delightful to watch you share your ideas with others and celebrate your friends learning too. Thank you Amelia, your care and love towards others helps to make our classroom a caring place.
Concentrating Cooper Crab Logan for… concentrating so carefully in your learning. We have been so impressed with you recently Logan. You are so focused and determined to achieve your latest targets. Your reading skills are improving daily and you are now reading longer words and red tricky words! A huge well done Logan, keep up the great effort!
In maths, we have been thinking deeply about how numbers are made up. The children are becoming more confident playing with numbers and exploring how they are made up. Together, we looked deeper at the number 5 and came up with many ways that it can be made. Hudson had a very interesting way of making 5, by having 1 and 2 and 1 and 1. We loved this idea and it sparked many new ways that 5 could be made up. Well done Reception, you thought very creatively, just like Kiki Chameleon!
During our RE learning we have been reflecting on times when we have felt poorly and how it feels to be looked after when we are not feeling very well. The children were very reflective and understood that they can help others to feel better through their actions too.
In phonics this week we have been learning the new sounds:
ay-may I play? / ee-what can you see? / igh-fly high
These are our long vowel sounds, please practise saying, reading and writing these sounds. Thank you.
We hope you have a wonderful weekend, Miss Bassett, Miss Neves and Mrs Malley
Homework
Flute— Please practise ‘We will rock you’ and ‘Prince of Belair’ this week on your flute.
Maths—Please practise the 6 times table this week, can you do it while being active maybe? Could you skip before every answer or jump as you think?
RE— Our new RE topic is Judaism, please do some research and in your own words write down the 3 most interesting facts you learn.
Spellings—The children have all been given their spellings to learn, my apologies they were sent home on Tuesday instead of Monday. Many new routines for me to get into!
It’s a mystery!
One lunch time this week a visitor must have crept into our classroom without being spotted and left us a letter and a Roman helmet, the letter has helped us learn about how the Romans returned home from Britain and how the Saxons invaded our shores. It was very interesting to hear all of the children’s ‘I wonder’ questions and we have started to find out more about the Saxons as part of our History. After realising it wasn’t Mrs Lyons (nice idea Emmanuel) who had planted it here the mystery is yet to be solved! Photos are now added, please see below.
Read moreToday we looked at one of our new virtues for this half term… curiosity. We explored various quotes about the importance of curiosity and being active in our learning as well as our faith and how it is our curiosity and desire to ask questions that brings us closer to God. We explored and discussed how the disciples were curious to follow Jesus, how we are all curious as we listen to His teachings and of course we are always asking questions about God’s beautiful creation.
The children have been showing great curiosity in their learning all week, and we have been most impressed with their desire to learn and their active participation. We have now finished our class novel ‘The Ice Cat’, the children have loved this book, exploring all of its themes and have responded so deeply. Once we finished we then had the most amazing conversation of how ‘the ice cat’ was actually a representation of the main characters feelings. I can’t wait to see how they put all of this depth in to their writing next week!
In Maths the children our showing great curiosity at looking at the different methods involved when adding numbers that bridge, deciding on the strategies that work best for them! Science yesterday, was a whole morning of the children experimenting and exploring their curiosity through making circuits and electricity- they loved experimenting on which circuits would light the bulb and when it wouldn’t asking the vital question of why not?
Reminders:
A letter went out today about our school trip on Wednesday 12th February- can we please make sure payment is made by 31st January

Ongoing learning challenge - IXL maths ‘Numbers and Counting up to 20’. There are lots of questions on here, I would like the children to do as many as they can over the next couple of weeks.
Reading
Please ensure children are reading every night.
Flash Cards
A few children have now learned ALL of the flash cards. This is a HUGE achievement and I am incredibly proud of their hard work and determination. For these children their new challenge is to spell these words. They will be tested on the spellings of these words once a week and moved onto the next set when they can confidently spell them.
Week Three
Another week over, gone in the blink of an eye, at least that is what it feels like. We are already half way through this half term, absorbing knowledge, questioning and making sense of it all. I would love to have been back at school, our school, with all the amazing opportunities we have now.

Steady progress is being made by all. The children have targets for this term- some of us have time targets as we are not yet reading for 60 mins each day. This includes the 25-30 mins of reading at school.
Read moreOn Wednesday afternoon we had a visit from the fire service. It was great fun, everyone got to go inside the engine and find out what equipment is kept in all the compartments. We even had a turn of squirting the hoses, it was so exciting!
The children continue their passion of learning about the planets and the solar system. This week we have designed our own rocket and using computer technology to make ourselves into astronauts and visit our favourite planet.
Sarah has started a display using recycled materials. She is creating planet earth to emphasis how single use plastics are damaging our world. We all watched a short video about how plastics find their way into the seas and hurt the animals and creatures who live there and it was sad to see. After a short discussion we decided to do something about it! The children throughout the week have become more aware of wasting resources such as paper and now notice how much plastic we throw away each day. To help us in our quest to take care of planet earth we are asking you to join us by not using single use plastics in lunch boxes etc and instead use reusable pots. Together we can make a difference.
Finally, could I please ask, if your child brings show and tell to nursery could you ensure that it is named, not too large and only one item. At the moment we are struggling to accommodate some of the life size toys that are arriving. As always we are grateful for your support.
