English - Semi-colon work in your revision book. Please complete the sheet that you have got.

Maths - formal multiplication. Calculate and then you can check these afterwards, marking and correcting your work. Go through your arithmetic paper, use it as a point of revision - what do you need to correct? What do you now need to revise?

Reading - there is a short read in your revision books. Answer the questions in detail.

Spelling - suffixes. There are 20 spellings this week. The test will be on Wednesday.

Homework 5th March 2020

This week the children are asked to complete pages 16 - 28 in their “Making Things Right” book. They have also been given the Act of Contrition prayer which they have been asked to learn. (They will need this for 17th March when they receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation) I have to say there were many really beautiful books shared on Tuesday evening and the children had obviously taken a great deal of time and effort. Well done children. Please make sure that books are returned each Tuesday so that we can share them in the session. Thank you.

Our Lenten challenge for this week is Can you load the dishwasher or Wash the dishes for 20p? Well done and thank you to all of the children who made the beds or have done jobs at home this week and brought in the money that they have earned. Don’t forget to keep looking at your jobs list and helping where you can.

Our spellings for this week are forwards perhaps guard often opposite busy. I have given the children a list of fun ways to learn your spellings. This may help some who are struggling to get all of their spellings correct. Why not have a go at some of them!)

I have set the children a challenge and we are really going to try to get a full class of everybody getting all of the spellings correct. Can we do it? I think we can but everyone has to try. m Keep trying!

What a fabulous week we have had. It has absolutely flown by and I can’t believe we have been back a week already. Mrs Harrison is so proud to hear that they have come back to school so focused and ready to work — and work we have!!!

This half term we are focusing on the virtues of generosity and gratitude. We have been thinking about all of the ways that we can be generous and we have realised that being generous with our time and our love and kindness is really important and something that we can all try hard to improve upon. We have also looked at how we can be grateful for all of the little things that happen every day.

This week we have started our new novel, ‘The Iron Man’ by Ted Hughes. Already we have asked a multitude of questions about what we are wondering about the text,  drawn annotated diagrams, written a brief description about where we think the Iron Man came from and how he arrived, found exciting description in the text and thought about our own vocabulary and description linking to the text, and we have only read chapter 1 so far! It’s so exciting and we are really curious to find out more. In maths we have continued our work on addition and subtraction using 3 digit numbers. We have finished off our Roman topic, investigating roads and also thinking about the reasons why the Roman Empire came to an end. In RE we have thought about what Lent is and how we can try to change during Lent to become more like Jesus, we have linked this to the topic of reconciliation and our preparation to the Sacrament of Reconciliation. We have all made our own Lenten Promise which we are going to try hard to keep to throughout Lent. (Can you guess what their Lenten Promise is? Have you noticed any extra jobs being done around the house these last couple of days?)

Lent

Today in Class Council we have discussed ways that we could help others during Lent. We have written our Lenten Promises, started to pray for our Prayer Sponsors and thought about how we can raise money to give to others who are less fortunate. This year, as a school, we are raising money for CAFOD. We have thought about all the extra jobs that we could try to do at home and wondered if maybe we could ask for small amounts in payment for these jobs so that we could then give the money to CAFOD. As a family could you please discuss this and agree on a list of jobs and a price list for these jobs. We have thought about jobs like tidying up, making the beds, loading the dishwasher/washing up, vacuuming the carpets, dusting, mopping, sorting out the recycling and taking out the rubbish but we are sure that you could think of lots more as a family. It was also suggested a lovely massage for mum (or dad) and baking biscuits to sell to friends and family, and bringing in that money. We hope that you will enjoy sharing your ideas as a family and working together to help others in need.

This week the extra challenge is to make everyone’s bed for 20p.

Please could money for jobs done each week be brought into school and we will complete a donation chart showing what we have raised as a class. Many thanks in anticipation.

Certificates

This week the children have all worked hard and we are delighted to give the certificates to… Jayden and Olivia. Well done children.

Olivia received the Kiki Chameleon Certificate for being such a creative learner. You have such lovely ideas Olivia and you choose your vocabulary and description carefully to entertain the reader. Well done!

Jayden received the Cooper Crab Certificate for concentrating so hard this week and for being such a focused learner. Well done Jayden—keep up the good work!

We are also very pleased that Jayden was awarded the French Award for the week. Madame Jefferson was very proud of your super conversation in French and your focus and enthusiasm during the lesson.

Well done also to Abi and Isabella who were our Gym Stars this week. Your creativity and determination really do help you to learn and achieve.

Reminders

• Welcome Mass on Sunday morning (9:30am) for all those who are taking part in the Holy Communion programme.

• Friday morning Lenten Masses start next week at 8am. Please try to come along and share this special time of prayer with us.

• White group have 2 more weeks of Multiskills on a Thursday morning.  8am with Mr Nay.

• Preparation for Reconciliation, Tuesday afternoons after school until 4:45pm. Please remember to bring your “Called to Change” books back to the session with you.

• Just to clarify—PE days are back to Tuesdays and Wednesdays and PE kit can be worn all day on these days. Please could we have shorts for our indoor lesson on Wednesday?  Thank you

• Also just a reminder that full school uniform or school PE kit should be worn each day, so that the children show that they are proud to belong to our lovely school family. Many thanks. (We are getting some deviation from this both in uniform and PE kit which does not look as smart as our uniform worn proudly does.)

"The season of Lent"

The children have returned to school with a spring in their step, which is great because our learning has been jam-packed, I know that many of them are certainly in need of a rest this weekend.

Certificates

Concentrating Cooper crab Rory for... wonderful concentration during your maths learning. You have such an interest in numbers and we love hearing you making connections between them, such as, “10 is two more than 8.” Your enthusiasm is just delightful. You are a joy to teach Rory, well done!

Creative Kiki Chameleon Chloe for… being such a creative thinker! The detail that you put into each and every piece of artwork is just amazing! I know that Mrs Curtis would agree. You concentrate so carefully and this shows in your reading and writing too. You should be so proud of your hard and consistent effort Chloe! You are an absolute delight to teach. Well done!

Tuesday made for such an exciting day! So many of the children came bouncing into school to tell Miss Neves and I all about the pancakes that they either, had for breakfast, or would be having later that day. This excitement carried on until the time came for the children to make their own pancakes in class. We used all of our senses as we made and ate these delicious treats. I have been so impressed with the children’s listening and memory skills. Each one of them engaged wonderfully during our discussions as we made pancakes. By the end of the day, they all knew the importance of this day as a Catholic, and were proudly calling the day Shrove Tuesday. 

On Wednesday we went to church for Ash Wednesday and, once again, the children behaved beautifully as they sat quietly and prayerfully with their Year 6 partners. They were fascinated to find out that the ash put on their forehead was made from palm leaves!

RE: This week has marked the start of Lent. We have decided to create a class Lent box and we hope to fill this box with money, which we will give to CAFOD at the end of Lent. Each week I will be setting the children a special challenge to earn money at home by carrying out helpful acts around the house.

This week I want the children to have a go at tidying their bedrooms. They could earn some money for the initial tidy and then a little extra for every day that they manage to keep it tidy. Please bring in the money they earn next Thursday. Good luck Reception!

Phonics: This week we have been introduced to the new sound: ‘ar-start the car’.

Please continue to enjoy stories at home, your child’s reading book and hunting for tricky words and new sounds out and about.

Maths: We have focused on the number 1-5. Looking at each number as a whole  and how they are made up by other numbers, parts. For example we have been saying, “5 is the whole number. It is made up of a part of 1 and a part of 4.”

PE: We have focused our attention towards the skills, bouncing catching. The children have been building up their skills using two hands and moving to 1 hand to bounce/dribble a large ball. Please practise this skill at home.

World Book Day: This year we will be holding a Book Fair after school taking place on Thursday 5th, Friday 6th and Monday 9th March. We will NOT be dressing up for World Book Day. This is something that we do as a school every 2 years so that it does not become too much work sourcing costumes each year. We will still focus on stories throughout this day, including stories from the Gospels.

The children have been given a missing number line activity. This type of question is something the children can find challenging. Please support them in talking through their reasoning, by asking ‘How do you know?’

Flash Cards

A few children have now learned ALL of the flash cards. This is a HUGE achievement and I am incredibly proud of their hard work and determination. For these children their new challenge is to spell these words. They will be tested on the spellings of these words once a week and moved onto the next set when they can confidently spell them.

Homework 27th February 2020

Whilst we are preparing for First Reconciliation and then after Easter when we will be preparing for First Holy Communion, homework will be mainly focused on the books “Called to Change” and “Called to His Supper”.

This week the children have been asked to complete the pages 1-15 and this should be completed for our next session on March 3rd.

During Lent we are also thinking about ways that we can help others and we decided in Class Council that we would discuss the ideas we shared in school and come up with a plan and jobs list at home. The children have promised that they will all try to do lots of jobs to help you for a small price, so that they can help others. (See the class blog)

In addition to this children are asked to continue with their daily reading so that they can quiz in school, and also to learn the spellings: eight, eighth, height, breathe, heard and length.

Please write complex sentences using these words. eg. Before I my eighth birthday, I am going to Spain on holiday.

When Goldilocks went to the house of the bears, oh what did her blue eyes see?

Welcome back! I trust everyone has had a restful week and are raring to go?

We started this with great enthusiasm as we started exploring traditional stories. The children decided Goldilocks and the Three Bears would be a good place to begin our journey. We read the story and thought of a plan.

Everyone said that the bears liked porridge and we should make some at nursery. One friend suggested that as Goldilocks made lots of bad choice we shouldn’t allow her into nursery. The children then made signs for the door saying 'No Goldilocks allowed’!

Other ideas ranged from making honey sandwiches for a teddy’s bears picnic to putting a video in the tree house to make sure Goldilocks didn’t come into nursery when we weren’t here. Watch this space……..more news on this to follow!

Next week we will be following all the children’s ideas to see which direction they take our learning in. It’s all very exciting!

Don’t forget Lenten Mass will begin next Friday at 8 am in the school hall. Please come along and join us.
