Science lesson 4

Today’s investigation is all about shadows. You may need to do this activity first, so that you can watch your shadow outside at different times during the day. Follow the lesson below and make sure you click on the links to find out more about shadows? What are they?

Science/English Lesson 5

You have lots of 2dos set in purple mash about light today and tomorrow. Most of these are short activities. Today’s 2do’s are:

You might want to do this later on in the day when you have watched your shadow for a while to see how it changes and have a good understanding of how they are formed. There is also a task below to complete all about shadows.

Today’s story is the first half of a tragedy. Read ‘A Deadly Trick,’ to a grown up and then practise your reading skill of figuring out what point the author is making, when you read the sentences. What is he really telling us?

Reading

Remember, you should be reading for at least half an hour each day.  Also try to read both a range of fiction and non-fiction books.

Day 4:

Chocolate Cake by Michael Rosen

With an adult, read together Chocolate Cake by Michael Rosen:

Now watch and enjoy Michael Rosen performing the poem here:

Make connections with the poem and compare the two versions. Discuss – What did you think of the poem? Which version did you prefer? How were they similar/different? Did the poem remind you of anything? Have you ever craved a particular type of food like Michael craved the chocolate cake in the poem?
Your child might comment that the piece resembles a story more than a poem and that during the performance piece, Rosen does not recite the poem exactly word for word. Use this opportunity to explain that some poems are not written in verse (free verse), do not need to rhyme, can vary in performance and can sometimes resemble more like the telling of a story!

Re-read the poem together, pausing frequently and summarising what is happening in each section, e.g. First of all, Rosen explains why he likes chocolate cake so much. Then he wakes in the night thinking about the chocolate cake. After that, he sneaks downstairs to eat the remaining cake, etc.

You are now going to plan to write your own version of Chocolate Cake. First of all, you need to decide what food your poem is going to be about. Now you are going to plan your poem. Think about the sequence (order) of your poem, e.g. why you like your chosen food so much, how you might wake in the night thinking about it, the act of sneaking downstairs into the kitchen, eating and enjoying it, etc.

Create a plan similar to a story map, including each of the different sections above. Talk your planned sequence through with an adult.

Continue with yesterday’s computing challenges to make your own animation. Mrs Lyons and the Year 3 children at school made this animation yesterday, she used Movie Maker which is available on Windows as we couldn’t get the app needed on school ipads. So if you are in the same position then have a go at Movie Maker instead. I have added lots of children’s animations so you can see how others are getting on, don’t worry if yours isn’t finished yet.

If you have completed it and fancy doing another feel free to send a second one! Children I have been blown away with how amazing your animations are, you have really taken what I taught you and ran with the challenge. I’m so impressed! You are super stars.

Day 3:

On the Ning Nang Nong! by Spike Milligan

Read the poem 'On the Ning Nang Nong’ here:

Now, play the audio recording of the poem as read by Spike Milligan (click on the image above).

Discuss your child’s reaction to the poem – they might be surprised by the nonsense words! Some background information on Spike Milligan and his nonsense poetry can be found in the first two paragraphs here:
(Note: Please avoid clicking on + Continue Reading tab as the content may not be considered age appropriate).

Your first task today is to draw and label a picture of the Ning Nang Nong. What creatures and living things need to be included in your picture? (cows, monkeys, mice, trees). If you were to attach speech bubbles to the animals, what would they be saying? (Bong! BOO! Clang!) What other creatures or living things could you add? What might they be doing? What other noises might you hear? Remember it doesn’t matter how ridiculous your ideas are – you can be as creative as you like! Colour your picture to make it as attractive as possible.

Now write some sentences to describe your version of the Ning Nang Nong. Remember to include details about all the living creatures that live there, the noises they make and what they do. You can use some adjectives (describing words) and include your own nonsense words too if you like!
Remember to read back through your work to check for spelling and punctuation.

Reception Learning from Home Wednesday 1st July

Good morning Reception.

It’s Wonderful Wednesday!   Can you do something wonderful for someone else today? What will you do?

Have you seen any of the birds that have been on this week’s blog in your garden or when you have been out and about? Have a look out for them!

I hope that you are all ready for another fun day of learning.

Everyday activities:

1. Phonics:

Login to Oxford Owl and read your next book. Remember to discuss the story throughout, checking your child’s understanding. Please make a note of any sounds or tricky words that your child struggles with and focus on these throughout the next few days/until they know them.

Today’s specific activities:

1. English - Monsters

Look at the pictures of the monsters from the books we have read (Monday and Tuesday or other monster books that you have) and describe your monster orally.

With an adult, you could write a poem, e.g. My monster has two horns.

                                                                               and likes to ride his bike really fast.

Year 3 Tuesday 30th June home learning

Reading

Mason and James have both met their reading targets, well done boys. Can you meet yours this week? I have created a display board on Purple Mash for you to share your book reviews to, you will find it under the ‘Sharing’ tab at the top. There are book reviews from James, Steph and Olivia already on there. Please feel free to add your own by pressing the share button after you have saved your work, you have a template set for you to complete your book reviews on in your 2dos.

A well done to James who recognised yesterday’s reading quote as one from Dr Seuss, he wins a hug off his family.

English

Read the next two chapters and then have a go at the challenges. These chapters are sad children. I am trying to make sure we get to the end of the book by the end of this week, so there is a little more reading to do today.

Thank you for the kind comments I have received about this topic, we have created it for the first time to teach to year 3 and it seem lots of the children have really enjoyed it. I think you will like this challenge too, you are going to make your own animation.

Task 1 - Plan out your story.

Task 2 - Photograph and make it into your animation.

See if you can make yours into a proper little animation rather than just a quick demonstration like mine. Watch the video and then click on the button below it for instructions on how to make yours.

This challenge may be completed over the next 2 days so it will give you time to make puppets, lego figures or models if needed.

Mrs Lyons and the children at school made this animation today, which is brilliant so I thought I would show you so you can see another example. See how the image just changes ever so slightly each time?

Day 2:

What is pink? by Christina Rossetti

Watch and listen to ‘What is Pink?’ by the Victorian poet Christina Rossetti: (click the picture below)

Listen again and pause to jot down any new words or phrases, e.g. fountain’s brink, barley bed, ripe, mellow. Discuss meanings, using a dictionary or Word Hippo to help you.

Discuss the ending of the poem. (What is orange? Why, an orange! Just an orange!) Why do you think Rossetti chose to use an orange instead of something else that might be orange in colour?

Today you are going to write your own version of What is Pink? If you are able to, go on a nature walk with an adult around your garden or local area. Act as a colour collector! What can you see that is each of the colours? What is each item/object doing? You may even wish to take a clip board or notepad out with you.

Write your poem using a similar structure to ‘What is Pink?’ using ideas collected from your walk, e.g. Start with a question: What is yellow? Answer the question: The sun is yellow: Describe the item or what it is doing: Light and bright and warm. Here is another example: What is green? The hedgerows are green, Home to nesting blackbirds and beautiful butterflies.

Remember to finish each question with a question mark. Check your spelling and try to use some noun phrases and adjectives (describing words) to help your reader to ‘see’ what you saw on your walk. Keep rehearsing your poem out loud as you write. Think carefully about how to finish your poem. You might choose to use the same finishing line as Rossetti with the orange!
