We have been finding out about Plants all around the world. It has been helping us brush up on our knowledge of where countries and continents are.

I have set you two purple mash tasks to complete about countries in Europe and continents. Before you do them, have a look at an atlas, globe and/or Google Earth with an adult and locate the continents. Play a game where you name a country and try to locate it. Eg Thailand, Italy, USA

Another wonderful week!

As promised, here are a couple of photos of our paintings of all our friends at nursery. Aren’t they fabulous?

The children are very proud of their work and so are we!

This week the children as well as learning about how to stay health have also been exploring their emotions. We have been reading the ‘Colour Monster’ story for everyone to be able to understand how some experiences make them feel a little different at times. Click on the link here if you would like to read the story at home with your child. I hope that you enjoy it as much as we do.

Everyone at nursery is so pleased how all the children have settled into nursery. They are so happy and are making lots of new friendships and ‘growing their brains’

We intend to continue exploring our emotions next week, we may even start a bit of yoga!

Luckily the weather continues to be kind to us as the children love playing outside in the garden. We have nonetheless made a fairy small world area inside, its all very magical. Some other friends made a farm in one of our cupboards!

It only remains for me to wish everyone a restful weekend, full of family fun!

English - Can you create a character description about your favourite Disney character?

Can you write a character description of your favourite Disney character? I have included a prompt sheet to help you and a WAGOLL (What a good one looks like) to help you. Think about your language and punctuation. Can you start sentences in different ways? Can you include an element of advanced punctuation? Your mission is to make your writing the same (if not better) than your writing in class.

Please type it up on the Purple Mash to do.

English - Who was William Shakespeare? - NEEDED FOR MONDAY 28TH SEPTEMBER PLEASE

Next week we will be starting our biography work on William Shakespeare…but who was he? Can you produce a 1 page brainstorm all about him? Think about information that includes: his early life, family life, early career, playwright days, final years and legacy.

We will be using this information in class next week.

Year 3 Home Learning 18.9.2020

Home learning will be posted on the class home learning page on a Friday and should be returned to school by the following Thursday. Home learning books will be used on alternate weeks and should be returned to school on Thursdays. We will be using Purple Mash or other internet sites for learning on the alternate weeks. Again work completed on Purple Mash etc should be submitted for marking by the following Thursday please.

Reading:

Please make sure that you read at home every day. As the children become more independent with their reading they may not want to read to you every night but please do try spend some time discussing their reading books and listening to your child at different times during the week. You may wish to make a comment in their green book if you wish. It is also good to share the reading of a book at times and also to be read to sometimes as well.  Being able to read and understand independently really is a gift - it opens up so many opportunities and takes you on journeys to such exciting places.

Don’t forget you can check on your child’s progress on Accelerated Reader -  this will let you know which books they have read and quizzed on and also their progress towards their reading target.

We have provided a copy of different fun ways to learn your spellings which the children have stuck into their home learning books. Please select activities from this sheet to help your child to learn their spellings.

The children should be able to write the spellings independently - this will need to be written clearly and correctly during the spelling quiz.

This week our spellings are a mixture of a spelling pattern and high frequency words.

We are really settling into the routine of work and already there have been many improvements and lots of thing that have been learned. It is so lovely to see children who are striving hard to take responsibility for their learning and who are becoming more and more like the learning characters each day. 

All children have now completed their Star Reading tests and have been given their new ZPD and reading targets. (We have stuck a little sheet in the front of their reading record book (little green book) so that you can see new ZPDs and targets. Please make sure all reading books and reading record books are returned to school on a daily basis. Thank you

At the end of each day, we have continued to share the daily Examen and reflected on our day. We have thought about the things that have happened throughout the day and also whether they have been things that have made us and others happy or whether they have been things that we are sorry that we have done because they have hurt ourselves or others. Each day we think about what we would like to say “Thank you” for.

We have continued to look at “Numbers to 1000,” counting objects, ordering numbers and thinking where to find a number on a number line to 1,000. In English we have been looking at sentences making sure that we are writing them correctly so that they make sense and use correct punctuation. We have continued to identify different parts of a sentences. We have also started to look at complex sentences and how these are written. In RE, we have thought about the Creation story and all of the things that God created. We have discussed how to look after God’s world and we have written some lovely prayers to thank God for all of the things that He created. We have continued to think about ourselves and our feelings, knowing that we are all special and loved.  This week we have thought about our dreams for our class, our school,  our families, our town, country and the world. The children all shared a lovely dream for the class and we have discussed how we can all work together to help our dreams to be achieved. How lovely it will be if we can achieve all of our dreams. This week we have started our history topic about the Stone Age. The children have been so enthusiastic and we can’t wait to explore the topic further. In science the children have started their topic of living things and their environment.

This week our certificates go to Lily-Mae and Daisy.  Lily-Mae receives a Concentrating Cooper Crab certificate for being so focused on her work and for really thinking carefully and trying so hard with all of her work. Lovely neat handwriting as well! Well done Lily-Mae, I know that you are going to have an amazing year if you keep this up.  Daisy receives a Co-operative Roger Robin certificate for being such a wonderful caring member of the class who is always ready and willing to help others, whether it is her learning partner or just generally within the class. Thank you so much Daisy, keep up these kind deeds. We are all so grateful for your help. We are also proud to say that Charlie got the lunchtime Role Model of the Week Well done Charlie - what a good example you have set.

Year 2 Home Learning - Week Ending 18th September 2020

The children’s home learning books have been sent home containing this week’s maths sheet.

Reading

Read for at least 10 minutes every day.

Some children will also have brought home word reading sets to practise this week which can be found in their home learning folder. These will be used in the same way as they were in Year 1 - when the children can read them fluently, they will move onto the next set. Therefore, please ensure that your child has their word set with them in school every day. Thank you.

My family and me

A fabulous week at nursery full of fun and sunshine.

The children this week have been talking about their families at home. Everyone has drawn a group picture of all their family members. They have worked so hard! When we have displayed them I will post a picture for you all to look at and to see if you can spot your family! It would be lovely if you could send in or email a family photograph to accompany your child’s drawing. You can send it to: b.draper@ourladystarofthesea.lancs.sch.uk and I will pass it on to your child’s key person.

The children have also painted a self portrait. They looked very carefully at each of their facial features and then recreated their face using paint. We clearly have many budding artists. Once again I will post a photo when they have been displayed.

Next week we will be exploring how to stay healthy. This will include healthy foods, oral hygiene and exercise. We will look at the effects on our body and how important being physical is to our overall well being.

May I remind everyone to send in one piece of fruit or veg for each session your child attends. Please do not send in cheese or yoghurt as these will require refrigerating.

Also, not everyone has confirmed that they are willing for their child’s image to appear on our web page. It would be helpful if you could confirm either way.

Finally, I hope that the sunshine remains for the weekend and that you can all have some special family moments together.

Week ending 18th September

This week has seen glorious sunshine and a whole class of eager children too! Everybody has loved their English lessons this week as we learned all about the language of explanation. WE studied dandelion clocks and read poetry about them We then listened to the wonderful Sir David Attenborough explaining all about the seed dispersal of dandelions. We have learnt this off by heart so that the language of explanation is imprinted in our minds! See video below!

After this, we imagined what it would be like to be one of the seeds on a dandelion, journeying away from the mother plant. Children have written some beautiful recounts of this occurring.

We have dived into our maths this week to grasp an understanding of 4 digit numbers now we are in year 4. We are doing very well! We have also learned about the structure of the Bible in RE and children had a great quiz where they looked up bible references to find the animal named in the verse. We also began French lessons this week.

RHE focus

This week, we have looked at managing our angry feelings. We have had a good conversation about losing our tempers and which part of the brain takes over when this happens. We have learned that we need to get back into our ‘thinking brain’ in order to regain control from our ‘animal brain.’

We have also looked at the story of Concentrate Cooper Crab, which gives us strategies to help us focus and manage distractions around us like Cooper.

This week, I tried to stick to two certificates but ended up with three!

Jacob O received a Bobby Bee certificate for sheer enthusiasm and always being ready to learn.

Lena received a Tommy Turtle certificate for always having a go and being willing to risk making mistakes in order to learn

Amber received a Lizzie Ladybird certificate for striving to improve by always participating fully in lessons and listening so carefully.

Lena also met her reading target this week! Well done!

James received his pen licence too!

Notices

On Monday, children will be bringing home recorders to practise!

These need to be brought into school every Monday - (pop it on your planner!)

Please could you sterilise them each Sunday night in a little Milton and water before they come into school. There will be recorder homework each week on a site called Charanga (starting from next week)

Maths

There is a double-sized maths sheet in your book which practises some of the things covered this week and also has a fun game on the back to play with a parent.

English

We have been learning how to start sentences in a more interesting way this week - with fronted adverbials for TIME and place.

Go into your garden, park or beach. Observe the wildlife and write some sentences with fronted adverbials - as we practised in class. Here are some examples:

PLACE

Underneath a leaf, lay a ruby red ladybird.

Over my roof, flew a delicate butterfly.

TIME

All of a sudden, my sneaky cat dashed across the lawn.

At midday, I spotted a hairy caterpillar.

Handwriting must be neat - make it your best work like you do in class.

RHE Managing my Feelings. My Anger Plan.

This week we have talked about managing our angry feelings. We compared the build up of anger to a firework and we thought of good ways to douse the flames and calm down. We need to get back into our ‘thinking brain’ instead of letting our ‘animal brain’ take over.

Come up with a plan at home of what you can do if you feel like you are losing control.

1. How will you calm down and get back in your thinking brain?

2. When calm, what is the best way to sort problems out?

   3. Practise these strategies so that you can be in control of your own feelings.
