We have had a very exciting week in Year 4! We began by learning the life cycle of a plant through our dance lesson on Monday. We learned the function of the flower and what part the bees play in reproduction of flowers.
Then on Tuesday we looked at the functions of different parts of a plant. We put carnations in coloured water and discovered that the stem’s function is to suck the water up to the flower. We also thought about roots, leaves and the flower itself.
On Wednesday we dissected a lily in partners to find the reproductive parts in a flower and then made beautiful annotated drawings of them. We learned about the processes of pollination and fertilisation.
One Thursday and today children have been very busy, composing their own explanation text all about the the life cycle of a flowering plant. They have worked so hard to incorporate all the language of explanation and are really becoming such a focused, hardworking group of children.
Both Mr Nay (PE) and Mrs Curtis (Art) commented on how wonderful the children had been in their lessons this week. Add to that a good play of recorders on Monday and a drama session outside, acting out the story of Joseph from the bible and we have had a fun week with lots and lots of growth!
Let’s celebrate!
This week 2 certificates were given.
Harriet received a Lizzie Ladybird certificate for listening to teacher’s advice on how to improve and also always being so hardworking.
Grace received a Roger Robin certificate for being such a supportive and loving member of our class.
French stars : Grace, James and India
PE stars Abi and Harriet for fantastic effort with relay!
Notices
Thanks for your flu replies. Please now bring the Holy Communion forms back as soon as possible.
Have a lovely weekend! God bless,
Mrs Lyons, Miss Edmondson, Mrs Mather and Miss Forster.

With so much going on at the moment, it can be hard to stop and reflect and think about everything that we have achieved. Sometimes we only think about the things that we have yet to master or our gigantic to do list. This week I made myself do just that - stop and reflect.

Please complete IXL A12 A13 and A14which practise skills learned in class.
Reconciliation
On Tuesday 13th October, Father Peter is coming into school to do children’s first Confessions individually. I have sent home a help sheet with your child so you can practise together and they can try to learn the prayer off by heart - The Act of Sorrow. Father Peter will guide them through a lot of it, so do not worry too much about the order of things - but just to put their minds at rest. You could help them think about the things they are sorry for too and have some reflection on this.
English - Word investigation sheet
We have learned the prefixes mis, in, dis and un - which all mean the opposite, or not eg misheard. Follow the instructions on the sheet to complete this word investigation.
12 spellings for a test each Friday
Year 1/2 spellings to revise:
prove, improve, move, love, above, child
Year 3/4 new spellings:
children, perhaps, therefore, woman, women, son
Any spellings you are finding tricky, try and write these in a sentence - using your best handwriting.
Recorder
This week, children have been given a log in for a site called ‘Charanga.’ It is stuck to the back of their name labels on their recorders. This is where they do their recorder homework. Mrs Maddocks has put two songs for them to play along to this week on the site. Have a go at logging in and trying it this weekend.
Year 5 homework - in books to be completed and handed by Thursday 8th October

THIS WEEK WE ARE USING COMPUTER BASED LEARNING.
Reading:
Read at home every day. You can quiz during school time when a book has been completed.
(Parents: Don’t forget you can check on your child’s progress on Accelerated Reader - this will let you know which books they have read and quizzed on and also their progress towards their reading target.)
Maths:
IXL maths using the IXL website. Please complete units A1, A4 and L1
Spellings:
Please learn the spellings below ready for a spelling quiz in class next Thursday.
Don’t forget to find different activities from “Fun Ways to Learn your Spellings” sheet to help your child to learn their spellings.
The children should be able to write the spellings independently - this will need to be written clearly and correctly during the spelling quiz.
This week our spellings:
answer island history learn
silliness shyness chattiness dizziness
Computing
Please can the children practise logging into the different computer based learning sites for themselves so that they are able to do it independently.
Our topic this half term is ‘Typing’ and the children have been practising using all of their fingers and thumbs to increase their accuracy and speed on the keyboard. This is so helpful in all aspects of the curriculum. We have been working on our posture too, no slouching! Some of them even told me about bad habits they have seen with grown ups at home and their typing, there are no secrets with children are there? I best keep my correct seating position at school too! I would like your child to reinforce this at home by accessing Purple Mash and completing the 2dos on there. There are 12 in total, but they can be played for just one minute by changing the time at the beginning of the game. They get harder as you progress through the levels, so please play them in this order. Please sit with your child throughout the games to remind them to use every finger and thumb - no index finger for every single letter children! They are called

We have had such a busy and exciting week. On Monday we did a dandelion dance! We used our recital from last week and put it to music and movement in groups! Super! In the afternoon, we went outside to play recorders and children played their first tune!!
On Tuesday we had a brilliant time learning all about different ways seeds disperse. We explored lots of seed pods Mrs Lyons had collected and thought about how they release their seeds. Then children used Book Creator to make a book all about seeds. The rest of the week has seen them writing explanation texts about all the different methods of seed dispersal. There is some AMAZING writing already. They sound like mini David Attenboroughs! Why not go and have a look in the woods and see what seed pods you can find!
On Wednesday we started our Geography topic of plants around the world and looked at atlases. We made books on the i-pads to show unusual plants from around the globe. On Thursday we learned the story of Abraham from the Old testament. All mixed in with some super maths work partitioning 4 digit numbers in different ways!
Let’s celebrate!
This week, our French star went to Jacob O for excellent listening and responding.
We have 3 certificates. (Mrs Lyons could not just choose two!)
A roger robin certificate went to Hollie-Rose for being a kind friend and a role model in class.
John-Joseph received a Lizzie Ladybird certificate for improving so much each day because he listens to the teacher’s feedback.

Be generous in all that you do.
We have had another lovely week with lots hard work and children who have been trying so hard to do their best. I am so proud of the children’s enthusiasm and desire to do well and I know that we will have a wonderful year of learning if this continues. Well done children.
We have been thinking carefully about being generous and grateful in our daily actions and we have continued to share the daily Examen. At the end of each day we reflect upon the day and think about all of the things that we would like to say “Thank you” for.
This week we have been comparing numbers and finding 1, 10 or 100 more or less than a given number. In English, we have read the fable of the Lion and the Mouse and thought about the different characters and also the setting. We have continued to identify different parts of sentences and also identified vowels and consonants. In RE, we have thought about our own families and about Jesus and His family. We have thought about the sort of things that we do as a family and what Jesus would have done with His family. We have written about happy and sad times that we have shared together as families. In RHE this week, we have continued to think about ourselves and our feelings, knowing that we are all special and loved. We have looked at how our actions impact not only on ourselves but also on others and how this makes us feel. We have shared stories about Kester and looked at how his behaviour had an impact on so many other people. We have reflected upon how Kester and Abraham are similar to ourselves and our relationship with God.
Let’s Celebrate:
This week our certificates go to Betsy and Connor Sean. Connor Sean receives a Lizzie Ladybird certificate for trying so hard and making improvement with his work and for really thinking carefully. Great reading Connor Sean. I know that you have tried so hard with your quizzing and what a difference it has made. Well done! I know that you are going to have a brilliant year if you keep this up. Betsy receives a Co-operative Roger Robin certificate for being so caring and understanding towards others. You are such a happy and smiley member of the class and always ready and willing to help others. Thank you so much Betsy, keep up these kind deeds. We are all so grateful for all of your help. We are also delighted that Stanley received the lunchtime Role Model of the Week this week. Well done Stanley, we are so proud of you.
Things to Note:
Please complete and return the flu vaccine form which has been sent home. All forms should be returned by Monday please. Thank you.
Please make sure that all personal belongings are clearly named so that items can be easily identified and returned to their owners, especially water bottles and cardigans/sweatshirts/tracksuit tops. Thank you.
With the usual September colds going around at the moment, please could you make sure that you send a small packet of tissues to school with your child. Thank you.
Please make sure that you look at the home learning page for this week’s home learning. Please make sure that this is completed by next Thursday. This week’s learning is COMPUTER BASED. Many thanks.
Please ensure that you have completed an up to date medical form following the link which has been emailed to you. It really does only take a couple of minutes to do. (If you have not sent us an email address we have not been able to send this to you yet. Please make sure that we have an email address to correspond with you with asap. Many thanks.) We are still missing quite a few of these medical forms.

Year 6 Blog - “ The Human Voice is the most perfect instrument of all”
Today, we have had our first class council meeting in class. I have to say, this group of children are the most organised group of councilors that I have had - they are just great. I am really looking forward to seeing just what decisions they lead us on this year. The collective human instrument of our class is the most perfect instrument of all.
