Year 4 Weekly blog 14.10.22 "A flower does not think of competing with the flower next to it; it just blooms!"

I am so proud of our class team with their performance in the class assembly this week! Every single child worked together and improved on each practice. This class really does take initiative and they are full of creativity! I am sure you will agree they delivered their assembly with such energy and surprised themselves with their confidence! The class are learning to celebrate and appreciate each other’s differences and concentrate on helping themselves ‘bloom’ rather than competing with others!

This week, we have delved deeper into our class novel ‘Charlotte’s Web.’ Through this we are learning vital reading skills which help our comprehension. This week children have learned what to do if they do not know the meaning of a word they read - we can try to figure it out from the context, we can look ti up or ask an adult! Children need to understand 95% of the words they read, in order to understand. We have also learned how to use our reading brain to keep track of what is happening in a story and how to summarise - or pick out the main idea of each paragraph we read. This is useful to practice at home sometimes, during reading.

This week, we have learned the stories of Joseph and of Moses from the Old Testament. Children have written newspaper reports to tell the audience all about the ten plagues of Egypt. We have also written an explanatory text about the Life Cycle of a Plant. All in all, children have worked their socks off!

Notices

On Monday 17th October, it will be our Harvest festival celebration in church. Thanks so much for all the biscuits - they are making a very tempting display in class at the moment! If anyone would like to join us and help us walk to church, we will be setting off from school at 9:05. This will be much appreciated.

Please also begin to sign up for our parents meetings on Friday 21st October, where I look forward to discussing all your child’s achievements so far.

Multi-sports Club

After the holidays, Mr Nay will be running a sports club on Monday mornings 8am-8:45am for Year 4. If your chid would like to attend, please fill in the form below by next Tuesday.

The whole class received a Lizzie Ladybird certificate for improving their assembly each time they practised it, leading to such a great delivery! Also Year 4, you are really improving in your understanding and care of each other and in helping each other learn. I am very proud of you!

Pippa received a Kiki Chameleon certificate for being a great Kiki chameleon and really using her own original ideas in our class assembly. You are so good in class too at listening and using your own creative thoughts.

Isaac received a Kiki Chameleon certificate for using his creativity to help others and producing some super explanatory writing, using lots of the language of explanation in clever ways..

Year 3 Blog 14.10.22 "T.E.A.M: Together, Everyone, Achieves, More."

Our week has certainly been a busy one! Along with our usual learning we have been rehearsing for our assembly next week. It has been wonderful to watch each child slowly grow in confidence, becoming louder, clearer and adding emotion and expression to their parts. The assembly really is coming to life! The teamwork during our practices has been what has really stood out to us. I am sure this is something you will notice too when you watch us next week.

We have continued our bridging over the 10s boundary. We have looked at this in many ways and have also learnt different strategies to help us to solve these problems. I wonder if your child could tell you about how we can use the part-whole model and how we partition the number to help us to bridge over the 10? Do they remember that we need to first make 10 and then add the other part?

In English we have been kept very busy by completing our guided writing this week! The children have had a wail of a time using their creative and inquisitive minds to find new vocabulary and including this into their writing. We certainly have lots of word wizards!

Ciaran our Focused cooper crab AND a Roger robin!: You have tried so hard with your learning Ciaran! We could not have asked anymore from you! You have shown such focus and determination during lessons, in particular during our maths work! You have also been the most wonderful friend, helping those around you with such care and kindness. Thank you Ciaran!

Beth has been an Enthusiastic Bobby Bee this week, Beth you have been such an enthusiastic Bobby Bee. You are always so excited about your learning and you want to do your best in everything that you do. We know that this enthusiasm will help you grow your brain this year. Well done Beth – keep up the good work.

Harvest: On Monday morning we will be walking to Mass to celebrate the Harvest festival. Year 3 have been collecting tinned custard, thank you to all of you who have donated! I am sure it will all help to make a big difference in our community.

Assembly: Our assembly is NEXT WEEK on Tuesday 18th October at 9:10 and 9:35. We hope you will be able to come along to watch us perform!

After half term, Mr Nay is going to be running a sports session on Tuesdays 3.30-4.15pm If you wish you child to take part please complete the permission form below. If we have a large uptake of children, we will split the class into two groups. One group for sport before Christmas and one group for sport after Christmas. The form needs completing before next Wednesday so that things can be organised before half term starts. Thank you/

I have set a 2Do on purple mash if you would like to have a go at typing up your speaking parts. Can you remember it all without looking at your printed words? Could you draw a picture of you as you are saying your part? This is another way to help you to remember your lines along with practising your typing skills.

Year 6 home learning 14.10.22

English - Reading - Read, read, read, read every single day for AT LEAST 30 minutes. Are you quizzing regularly enough? Some still haven’t quiz since they’ve been back, let’s change that and get to our targets.

Grammar- We’ve been focusing on our clauses, looking at main and subordinate clauses. Can you complete the worksheet in your home learning books to make complex sentences.

Don’t forget when adding a subordinate clause you need to include a subordinating conjunction. Use the picture below to help you.

Spellings - this week we are focusing on words with the ending ‘ance’ and ‘ancy’

Maths - Please complete the fractions of quantities worksheets in your home learning books.

This week, we will begin really mastering our times tables. In class we have gone over the 2x tables and their link to doubles sums eg 6 x 2 is the same as 2 x 6 which is also the same as 6+6. It is so important with times tables. not simply to learn hem off by heart but to understand them and be able to represent them. We did it with square counters so we can visualise the twos.

Homework this week is the following:

1. Watch our Percy Parker song below and sing along!

2. Make sure you understand them by making various sums given by your parents eg if mum gives you 5 x 2 - make it with shoes, sweets, cups etc Put them in rows and columns like we did in class. This is an array.

3. Practise your 2x tables using the booklet I provided. You do not need to bring this back into school but it is important you complete it.

4. Go on TTRockstars - it is set for the 2’s.

Year 1 Weekly Blog 7.10.22

What an exciting week, we though of questions to ask the Evil Pea and wrote them on our board. When we came back to school the next day he had visited our classroom again and answered all of our questions. We have been checking around school to make sure the Evil pea is not hiding. Some of us thought he may have come home with us and is hiding in our rooms! Watch out for the Evil Pea we are excited for next week, we are going to think about how we can catch the Evil Pea.

We also retold the Supertato and Evil Pea chase, we had lots of fun and used great language to retell the story.

In RE we thought about how people can spoil God’s world and we discussed how we can care for it, we all made posters to help encourage others to look after our world.

We have loved our practical Maths lessons, we have been comparing objects and working out which group has more than and which has fewer than. We discovered it was easier when we put the objects into a grid so we could see without having to counting them.

 Harvest Plea

With Harvest time fast approaching, we are looking forward to celebrating as a whole school community once again for the first time since the pandemic. As in previous years, as a school, we will be collecting food items for local food banks. Year 1 are collecting Long Life Milk, so please donate if you can, before Friday 14th October.

Reminders:

·        School dinners are free up until Year 3, if your child would like a school dinner, they can let us know in the morning.

·        Please ensure your child has a spare set of clothes, just in case of any accidents (not just toilet accidents) such as falling in a puddle or spilling something over themselves.

·         If you have any spare boys underwear, we would be grateful if you could donate them to our class, as we do not have many spare at the moment.

·         Please can you return any borrowed uniform back to school as soon as possible.

Year 4 Weekly blog 7.10.22 "Look deep into nature and then you will understand everything better!"

My goodness, this week we have looked deep into nature! We have been busy learning about the functions of each part of a plant. We learned about the function of the stem through an experiment with carnations and food colouring. We also dissected a lily to look at its male and female parts so that we could understand the tricky processes of Pollination and Fertilisation. Now it is time to bring our English and Science skills together to write the explanatory text of ‘The Life Cycle of a Plant.”

In English also this week, we have started our new class novel, ‘Charlotte’s Web,’ and already children are theorising about what might happen next! They know the farmer faces a dilemma - whether or not to kill the runt of the litter and a great debate was held in class!

Today we have started our exciting journey into Shakespeare! We have had a workshop in Year 4 from a Broadsides Playwright, who helped the children learn about writing plays. As January 2023 marks the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s first works going to print, the Royal Shakespeare company are launching a year of playmaking and playwriting. There is a competition called ‘37 plays’ which we will be taking part in. Year 4 will be also writing our own playscript, which will have a mixture of Shakespeare text and children’s own writing! We will then perform this playscript on the Grand theatre stage in March!

WE have been busy learning column subtraction this week in Year 4. We have also been practising our class assembly - I think you will enjoy it!

This week, we have done our third kidsafe lesson. This week it was about keeping safe during any sort of screen time - be it T.V, mobile or gaming. We gave clear messages about age ratings for films and games and looking after our tender, young minds! Many children talked about things they had seen which they liked watching at the time - but then felt scared when it came to bedtime.

We plan to explore this more on our upcoming E-safety Day. Please read the letter below which explains further.

Notices

On Tuesday October 11th it is our class assembly at school in the hall. We do two performances - one at 9:10am and the other at 9:35am. You are most welcome to come and see your child.

On Wednesday 12th October it is School photographs day. Since this is our PE day, you can choose to send your child in their school jumper and tracksuit bottoms if you prefer their photos to be school uniform.

On Monday 17th October, it will be our Harvest festival celebration in church. This year, we are asking Year 4 to bring in packets of biscuits to give to local food banks. Please could you start sending these in - by Friday 14th October.

Just a reminder also, that any earrings worn for school must be simple silver or gold studs.

Year 3 Blog 7.10.22 - "No one ever made a difference by being like everyone else." P.T. Barnum

We have had great fun in English this week, creating actions for our story the Lion and the Mouse and using this to help us to re-write the opening paragraph. We have a class of enthusiastic and curious learners, all creating wonderful pieces of writing. We paid particular attention towards including adjectives to describe nouns, along with using the right determiners before a noun. We have been so impressed to see this within their writing. Well done Year 3!

In maths we have moved on from 3 addend sums, using this knowledge to help us begin to bridge over the 10. The children are already becoming confident at splitting an addend into 2 parts to help make the equation much simpler to answer. For example taking the sum 7 + 5 and changing it to 7 + 3 + 2, making that all important 10 first. This is something we will continue to build on next week.

The children we all buzzing with excitement as they learnt all about their assembly which we will now be practising ready for our performances in a couple of weeks. The message we aim to share with our audience is that we are all special and our assembly is based on the story of Punchinello. You might like to read this story at home, or watch it being re-told on youtube. We cannot wait to share our assembly with you all.

This week our KIDSAFE lesson has focussed on bullying and the “Yukky Feelings” that this can cause. Please read the letter below to find out more about the session.

Rory for being a creative Kiki chameleon! We were so impressed with your efforts during our writing this week. You were determined to think differently and develop your vocabulary, innovating our story with lots of fantastic vocabulary!
