Year 3 Weekly Blog Friday 17th October

Our learning this week…

English
We’ve been immersed in lots of lovely books about hidden gardens, topairy tress and adventures in enchanted trees! We’ve continued to ask questions and make predictions from pictures and recorded them in our books. We made picked out clues and compared pictures to stories we already know and made links to real life eg. We spotted some yellow flowers in a picture that reminded us of daffodils, we went on to think about the time of year we see daffodils in the garden.

Maths
We have been putting into pracise all the skills of the last couple of weeks and solving addition and subtraction problems. We’ve built on our bridging in Year2 and have been bridging multiples of 10 across 100.

Swimming

Our swimming stars this week (As chosen by the swimmers teachers) are: Evana and George.
Well done, the whole class ae really impressing me - I don’t think we’ve had so many children who are able to swim so early on in the year.

Scientists in Year 3

We have been learning about soil, how it is formed, what it is and how long it takes to form. We looked really closely at sample of soil to see what we could see, the children were very observant and recorded what they found in their samples.

Year 5 Weekly Blog 17.10.25- ‘I tell you, you will receive justice from the Lord’- Luke 18:1-8’

What a fantastic week it has been in Year 5! We may be seven weeks into the half term but the children are still showing signs of super focus, enthusiasm and work ethic throughout their lessons. We started our week by coming together in our class assembly by sharing some important messages that we have been discussing across this half term. The children sang and dance their hearts out whilst also delivering their powerful and purposeful lines.

We then ended this day also in unity as our worship leaders told us about the parable of the persistent widow and why it is always important to be persistent in life. We then followed this up by talking about how Jesus always wants us to keep praying and no matter how many times we pray, our prayers will always be listened.

Learning has continued to flow throughout the week with the children finishing their independent stories of ‘The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe’, which has allowed us to continue reading the novel past chapter two. In Maths, we have continued working with decimal numbers and understanding the value of each digit. This week, the children were very excited to try some ‘ Year 6 Maths’ as we introduced a brand new column- the thousandths. In Art, the children have working on themselves by drawing self portraits, using lots of different skills and techniques along the way.

Virtue Star of the Week: Our virtues for this half term are learned and wise. Our winner this week goes to Louisa. I was super impressed with your attitude and commitment in our assembly performances. You lead the way in both the order of speaking but also in what I was asking for during practices. You receive feedback so well Louisa and this will continue to help you grow as a learner.

Learning Certificate Winner of the Week: Our winner this week goes to Nathan for being an focused and cooperative learner. I just love how focused you are Nathan in the classroom. You understand our STAR expectations and you follow these to the best of your ability, which allows you to get the most out of your learning. Year 1 Weekly Blog Friday 17th October - "Prayer brings us not only nearer to God, but also nearer to one another" Pope Benedict XVI

Our children’s prayer and liturgy focused on Harvest, we gave thanks to God and prayed for a fairer world. The children were so thoughtful, it is such a blessing to see the children with such desire to lead in these worships, and doing so with great care and respect. We have also been listening to this weeks Gospel where Jesus told His disciples a story about a woman and an unjust judge. He taught His disciples and us that God is never like the judge, no matter how much we pray to God, he is always there for us.

In RE we have been learning about Laudato Si and how we can care for God’s world. The children were shocked to see some of the global issues our world faces and really want to know how they can help look after God’s world. After looking at the amount of trees that get cut down, we decided to help our wildlife and created bird feeders which we put in our forest school.

Going deeper in conversation

In our Gospel we have been thinking about prayer.

Question to ask: What does the word ‘prayer’ mean to you? What is your favourite prayer? Who could you pray for this week?

Magic moments

In search of the missing Evil Pea our wanted posters can be spotted all around our school! Hopefully we will soon track him down! We have been busy making predications what he might do next and have even began to create a story map to help us retell the Evil Pea story.

Book Look: I know the children loved spending time with you to share their learning so far. They have all had a fantastic start in Year 1 and it was a lovely time to celebrate their work ready for our parents meetings on Friday.

Let’s celebrate

A huge well done to Summer who was awarded our Star virtue this week. Summer you have had a brilliant start to Year 1 and all of the staff in Year 1 have noticed your learned and wise choices and your excitement for learning. You never give up and we are so proud of you!

Congratulations to Rosalie who is our enthusiastic Bobby Bee this week. Rosalie, your enthusiasm for learning has been so wonderful; to see you beam with pride at your accomplishments is a joy! You have been to enthusiastic and motivated with our story writing in English and we can’t wait to see you flourish throughout Year 1!

Reminders

Parents meetings - Thank you for making your appointments, please email with your preferred time if you have not made yours yet. You will shortly receive an email with an invitation for the teams meeting ready for Friday next week.

Coats - Please make sure you come to school with a coat everyday to put on should the weather take a turn during the school day.

Water bottles - Please ensure your child comes to school with a water bottle. These are taken straight out of bags in the morning and children are able to access them throughout the day to keep hydrated. We are often talking about how important it is to drink plenty of water and water bottles make it easier for them to do this independently. Polite reminder that the water bottles should contain water and not juice. Thank you for your support.

Harvest - This year we are collecting tins of soup for the foodbank. All donations welcome!

Maths Workshop for Parents WEDNESDAY NOV 5th

Last year we successfully hosted - parents and child maths workshops. These were led by the KS1 teachers in the hall. Parents sat with their child and enjoyed playing maths games together. As your child moves through KS1 we would like you to help them become proficient at recalling number facts and loving numbers. We would like to invite you once again to school on Wednesday November 5th to take pasrt in the next phrases of their maths journey-

Year 1 workshop after drop off 9:00 - 9:15 am

Year 2 worskshop before pick up 2:10 -3:10pm

Following the workshop and for the next 5 weeks- you will receive maths games to play each week. These are sent home and linked to the class homework blog.

This week...

Welcome to our page all about learning together. This week we have been on lots of adventures!! Here is what we have been up to!

Our Learning Landscape this week was full or brain growing challenges which included:

• Making 1, 2, and 3 Numberblocks.

• Matching shapes to make a picture.

• Counting the correct number of people and passengers into the correct cars.

• Writing challenges- taking food orders and practising writing numbers 1,2,3 and the sounds m,a,s,t,d. We had to remember to use our duck fingers!

• Completing a sound puzzle then matching the sounds we have learnt.

• Lots of hand strengthening activities- matching pom pom game, we had to pick up the pom poms using tweezers and the tiny peg board game to practise our fine motor skills.

• Filling tubs using small scoops. Some of the friends thought it took hundreds of scoops!

• Making bubbly water and then syphoning it down a long tube into a HUGE bottle!

  but, best of all was the dentist surgery we made. We learnt about healthy foods, how we should brush our teeth and visiting the dentist!

Worship

This week our ‘Creation and Covenant’ topic has concluded with ‘Looking after God’s World’. Our key words this week were CARE, Earth and HELP.

The whole of Creation shows God love for us (Laudato Si’ 84–88). We spoke about all the ways we can look after our wonderful world. We suggested turning off lights when we aren’t using them, recycling, walking instead of driving.

We also spoke about being stewards – just like Mrs Gregan spoke about in assembly. We are visitors to our world and we must take care of it. God made the Earth and sky. God made all the people all over the world. God made all the animals. God made all the plants. God made the air, the ground, and the water. God tells us we must take good care of them. It is an important job!

Caring for the Earth is a way of showing love for it, and recognising God’s love for us. How can you continue this at home

Promoting Peace

Scripture offers us all wisdom and insights on living the Gospel in today’s world. Jesus tells us to love God and to love our neighbours, especially our sisters and brothers living in poverty.

Peace is not just the absence of war. It is part of God’s nature, and a value we should all seek to live out in our daily lives.

Peace comes from both justice and love and is dependent upon people understanding one another.

This year we will be actively seeking to promote peace in all we do in nursery and school. To remind us to be kind, helpful and gentle we have created a cross of peace in nursery. Everyone has made a heart of peace to hang on the cross.

Harvest

This year Harvest Festival will be held in school. Nursery are asking for donations of Pot Noodles as an act of kindness and support for people less fortunate than ourselves. As always thank you for your support.

Half term holiday

Don’t forget that nursery and school will close afterschool on Thursday 23rd October and reopen at 8.45 am on Monday 3rd November.

Year 4 Weekly blog. Friday 17th October. " Prayer brings us not only nearer to God, but also nearer to each other.(Copy)

The children prepared a beautiful worship this week, all about Trust in God and Jesus. They told us the Gospel story of the feeding of the 5,000. The class decided that this showed we can always have faith that God will provide for us. We can also use this to help feed our neighbours around the world. In our RE lessons this week, children have been reflecting on the virtues of faith, hope and love shown by Abraham. THey have thought about how these virtues can help them be a good neighbour to others. Then they learned about Cardinal Manning - a man who showed great faith, hope and love in his actions and support of others.

Thank you so much for coming to look at all the hard work children have done over these last 7 weeks. I am sure you will agree they are doing so well. This week they have learned about time zones in Geography, written a persuasive letter in English and moved on to numbers above 1,000 in Maths. They are doing so well with their times tables facts - in fact we already have three children - Marla, Sasha and Isla whose heatmaps are green - this means they know every fact in less that 4 seconds! Tremendous!

Our certificate this week is a Lizzie Ladybird learner. This goes to Michael. Every day, you get better at focusing and listening. You challenge yourself and listen to feedback carefully. You are working so hard!

Our virtues this half term are being learned and wise. This week, Ruth receives our star for being a wise learner who is so calm in class and so fiocused in all she does. What an excellent attitude you have Ruth. Very inspirational.

Everyone has now completed their star reader assessment and has been to the library to choose a book. Lots and lots of reading to help achieve our class word goal and to also help bring your writing skills alive!

Times Tables

Lots of TTRS practice to keep being super speedy- a large majority of the Year 5 Maths curriculum is based on solid times tables knowledge so keep practicing- even if you have already gone green!

Spellings

The children have a spelling sheet to complete which is based on this weeks spellings. The children should be familiar with how to complete this as we have practiced this in our spelling lesson.

Vocabulary check- Our tricky Year 5 spellings are the final 5 spellings on our test. Use a dictionary to find the definitions of these words and write them in your homework book.

Year 6 Weekly Blog: “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven” (Matthew 5:16)

Let your Light Shine

This has been the theme of our week and we have done a lot of reflection, discussion and work around this at Castlerigg. How we can let God’s light shine through us and be the work of his hands. We have grown in our relationship with God through prayer, adoration and celebrating mass together. All of the workshops we have compelted have been centred around how we can use of talents to let God’s light shine through and how these are shown through our relationship with God and of course each other. Every member of staff have praised Year 6 on their behaviour, enthusiasm and engagement during their time away - they have been an absolute joy to take away. We have loved seeing the children so engrossed in their prayer and reflection- they really have been a credit to you all.

On our final day we have spent time sharing our graititudes for one another and wrote down all the things we love about one another. We have also shared mass together, gathering together as a community- what a beautiful way to end our time away with one another.

How can we let our light shine out? - Castlerigg Day 2

This has been a key message for us today at Castlerigg - how can we let our light shine out and where does the light come from in your life? Yesterday was all about how we shine our light and today was how we can share our light with others?

Before bed last night, we had the most beautiful night time prayer. The chapel here at Castlerigg is the old stable building, which is perfect as we prepare for the arrival of Jesus this Christmas. Jamie, the youth worker here, took us through a section of prayer and asked us to think about how we can helps others. It was incredibly moving and the children were so reverent in their prayer and reflection. We then snuggled up and listened to a bedtime story from Diasy. A rather lovely end to our first day.

This afternoon we headed off to the lake for some much needed reflection and fresh air. The children found out about places of interest in Keswick, headed to Derwent Water to skim stones which they loved! It was so lovely to take in the views of the lake and spend some time in God’s world. The children were great.

After a delicious tea of sausage and mash, we are now getting ready to settle down for some creativity tasks and getting ready for the party!

Let Your Light Shine... Castlerigg Day 1

We’ve arrived! We have had a wonderful afternoon, had our tea and we are currently doing team building acitivites in the lounge area, where I can hear lots of laughter echoing through the house.

The theme of these next three days is, Shining our Light - something we do so well. The children have played some ice breaker games, split into smaller teams and have completed their contract for the week. These are things that they are all going to try and do to shine their light with others. I think you will see from the photographs, just how much fun the children are having - and in such a short amount of time.

As I sit and type this, the children have just demolished southern chicken wraps, salad and fries. We will then finish the day with a creative workshop and then night time prayer in the chapel.

The staff and I feel so blessed to spend this time with the children this week, in such a beautiful location. The views from the children’s bedrooms are stunning. Enjoy the photos and sleep well tonight.

Our new class novel is The Faraway Tree by Enid Blyton. Enid Blyton is also our Author of the month for October. I have found a free link to Enid Blyton’s Bedtime stories online. It would be lovely if you could share a story with your child at home. There are many short stories that are ideal for sharing together.

Class Assembly Script

The children have blown me away this week with their confidence reading their assembly lines - thank you for practising at home. On Tuesday they practises sing Coldplay’s Someone Special, they sound fantastic. Please keep practising at home. Our class assembly is on 11th November.

Year 1 Homework to be handed in Monday 20th October

Thank you once again for the wonderful homework this week. We are so grateful to be working alongside such supportive parents! Don’t forget to send in any proud achievements via email, photos or medals etc. We love celebrating the children and putting these photos onto the schools ‘Proud Cloud’ display in the hall.

Optional extra homework

As we are praying the Rosary this month we would love some pieces of artwork of Our Mother Mary. You could take inspiration from a famous piece of artwork or a statue.

Maths: We had fun playing a counting forwards / counting backwards game earlier today. Could you replay this game at home. Pass a teddy around saying the next number as you go. On a signal (clap / timer / buzz) switch directions passing the teddy back saying the number before. Keep going until it feels time to stop. You could start easy, counting up to 5 or 10 and back. Then move onto larger numbers (we are currently working with numbers 0-20).
