Year 4 school trip - UCLAN to study Cosmetic Chemistry
This trip will help us to find out more about solids, liquids and gases. It is on Tuesday 12th November - children to be at school at normal time. The cost of the trip is £12 payable now on parentpay.
Half term already!
It’s hard to believe that we have already been at nursery for a full half term! Everyone has settled so well in to nursery life and is embracing all the new challenges that learning can offer. The children have worked so hard, I think they are in need of a well earned rest.
I do hope everyone manages to get some time to relax and recharge their batteries in readiness for a VERY busy next half term. I would also like to thank you all for your wonderful support of nursery, it is greatly appreciated.
We made a scarecrow called Poppy!
The children thought it would be a fantastic idea to make a scarecrow for the nursery garden, to scare away the birds!!
We found some garden canes and old clothes in the cupboard. A group of friends stuffed the clothes with autumn leaves. Everyone thought the scarecrow should have a happy face and be called Poppy! A good choice I think!
High Frequency Word Sets
I have had such a positive response from parents and children about the high frequency word sets. It is so wonderful to see how much the children are enjoying learning these words and how motivated they are to do so!

Sorry for the late post, but I wanted to make sure that I uploaded all the pictures from today to show you what a muddy but wonderful time we all had! Wow, today has definitely been the highlight of our week… we all had the best time, despite the wet weather! In the morning the children worked together so cooperatively to build their shelters as the early Stone Age men would have done. There was lots of little extra touches as well that were added, such as fires, chairs and some very impressive entrances. I am sure you are impressed by the photographs. Then all the children, used flints to begin their own fires, which was then safely put out by heat proof gloves- they were all super sensible! We then had the opportunity to get dry inside while we had our lunch, until is was back to the forest to play some hunting games! What a day!

What a great week we have had in Year 4. We were so proud of you all in assembly on Tuesday - you spoke with confidence and were so independent - you worked as a great team to teach everyone the joy of living in curiosity, awe and wonder. We have had such a great time studying plants and you really demonstrated this! Well done to all.
My head spins with all that we have achieved this week - from typing a newspaper report all about Moses and the ten plagues of Egypt to all of our lovely research in Geography into extreme environments and plants around the world. You have become really effective searchers! In maths we are breaking those larger numbers up to understand and describe them in different ways. English has been very exciting - starting our new fiction topic into fairy tales and the opening of ‘The Pied Piper.’ We have been trying out some new learning strategies too - playing a game called ‘Centrepiece’ to help us gather information in groups together and another game called ‘Ideas round up,’ to discover everyone’s predictions of what might happen next in the story. Not to mention an exciting tournament with Mr Nay today in PE - which will conclude on Monday!
We wish William well as he starts his new journey in a different school. There were many tears today - your classmates love you William and I am sure you will make so many more new ones. We all wish you the very best.

This week three learning certificates were awarded. Olivia received a Lizzie Ladybird certificate for acting on and learning from teacher feedback. Sophie received a Tommy Turtle certificate for letting the whole class share her mistake and learn from it and Ava received a Cooper Crab certificate for being such a ready and keen learner - you do not miss a trick! All three of you girls are so helpful in class too!
Emmanuel and James were our swimming stars this week. Your excellent listening helped you both progress really well. We are proud of you.

Please continue to send in noodles packets for our harvest collection on Tuesday
Harcourt and Marsden won the house competition this half term and can come in their house colours on Tuesday.
Wednesday is photograph day.
Please continue to collect sponsorship money for our Danceathon on the first week back.
We break up on Wednesday at 3.30pm and then I look forward to seeing you all on Thursday for our ten minute appointment to share your child’s start to year 4.

The highlight of our week was watching the RSC company perform The Merchant of Venice. The children had to describe the play using 5 words, these included: tense, dramatic, hilarious, disturbing, frightening.

Reading
Two thirds of the class have reached or are about to reach their reading target set at the beginning of the half term. We are determined as a class to help the other third make the progress they can. We all need to be Sadie Spiders - determined to read as much as possible- reading is the key to all learning- it boosts confidence and leads to exciting new insights. Please read over the Holiday- please do not stop!

Eco council member
Year 5 have been formally invited to join the school Eco-Council by Mrs Mather our Eco Council Leader. To become a member the children need to do something that shows they care about God’s world. You could:
Re purpose rubbish into something new and bring it to school
Create a poster communicating what we need to do to look after our world
Send a photograph “via the contact button” on our class blog. A picture showing you doing something environmental
Be creative!
English
Master the oral story telling of Gellert. Can you learn the first two paragraphs using the images up loaded here? . I am looking for children who can take it one step further and learn the whole story. I have downloaded it here for you. You may take sheets of paper from school to create your images. I will film us performing the story next week so you can see it on our class page.

This week has been bursting with learning! In science, the children have been sense detectives! Using their 5 senses, they were able to identify a missing teddy bear using the clues provided.

Science
To consolidate the children’s learning on animals, I have challenged the children to create their favourite animal in any form. This could be a drawing, a model or a poster - the more creative the better! The children should research the animal and be able to talk about it. The children will share their creations on 1.11.19, during show and tell.
Reading
Children are to continue learning the word sets. Please support the children to learn these words inside out; the children need to be able to read these words on sight (not by Fredding in their head).
Please encourage the children to read as much as possible over half term and do record this in their reading log.

With only three days of learning left before the holidays, the children are remaining as focused as ever in order to achieve those half term goals. Maths lessons have been filled with sequences and counting forwards and backwards in 2s, 5s and 10s. The children have been busy solving problems by finding missing numbers and have been giving some great explanations and reasons as to why they have given certain answers - the use of mathematical vocabulary has been great.

It is so lovely to get lost in a good book and that is exactly what we have done this half term. As we approach the end of Skellig, we are looking back at the vast amount of work we have completed around this book. Discussion texts, poetry and setting descriptions have all been completed and I am excited for you all to read them on Thursday at parents’s day. How this first half term has flown! It has been an absolute pleasure watching the children grow over the last few weeks, not only in size but in confidence too.
This week, we have battled wind and rain during the lunchtime period,but not a single child has allowed the weather to dampen their spirits! Mr Nay has continued to deliver an array of sporting activities from cricket to zigzag football rounders. Thank you Mr Nay for all the wonderful opportunities you have given the children this half term. We look forward to seeing you after the break and to more exciting sports.
Year 6 have continued to provide Keystage 2 children with the opportunity to explore Purple Mash and quiet reading time in the Library. Thank you for all your enthusiasm and hard work this half term Year 6.

"If you can dream it, you can do it..."
It is hard to believe that we are already at the end of our first half term together in reception. The children have settled in brilliantly. It is always so wonderful to see their self belief and, “I can” attitude grow during their first term. They have gained greater independence and some of the difficult tasks, such as putting their coats on or getting changed from PE, are now becoming much easier!
Certificates
Enthusiastic Bobby Bee WILLIAM for… Your brightness, smile and enthusiasm. You are an absolute delight William. You have the most wonderful manners which every adult who spends time in reception notices. Well done William, you have had the most positive start to you school life, I cannot wait to watch you as you grow and achieve new skills.
Brave Tommy Turtle BETH for… Gaining so much confidence over these first few weeks in school. It is lovely to hear your voice during larger group discussions, this is something that was quite scary at first. Well done Beth! Keep believing in yourself, I know that you can achieve whatever you set your mind to.
Our Phonic sounds this week are:
This week we have spent time focusing on blending (putting sounds together, p-a-t: pat) and segmenting (cat: c-a-t) words. We have also reinforced our learning of previous sounds and have focused on the sounds u and b. Please practise saying and hearing these sounds at the start, middle and end of words. We have also provided the sound cards to help you to practise forming these letters.
Maths
This week we have increased our understanding of the number 3 and the children are great at explaining how the number 3 is made up of; 2 and 1, or 1 and 2, or 1 and 1 and 1. Next week we will be focusing on 2d shapes and how these shapes link with our numbers.
RE
In RE this week we have been discovering all about how we pray the Rosary, using Rosary beads to help us. As you know we are collecting toiletries for a local food bank as we prepare for our Harvest celebration in school. Thank you so much to all of those who have already donated items! Please make sure that all donations are in school by Monday. Thank you for your support.
(Some item ideas: deodorant, shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrushes, soap etc)
Reminder: Next week on Wednesday 16th October we have our school photograph day. Please make sure that your child is dressed is full school uniform (not PE uniform). Thank you.
Danceathon
On the first Tuesday back after the half term holidays, we are holding our annual Danceathon. On this morning, the children should arrive at school around 8:15 ready to dance the day away. Everybody meets outside on the school playground for a whole school outdoor dance! We have so much fun on this day and all money raised will go towards updating our schools trim trail… which Reception are very excited about! Thank you once again for supporting our school events.
Winning house teams: Well done Harcourt and Marsden. Your teams have managed to collect the most learning tokens this half term. Remember to wear your own clothes (Wearing their house colour if possible) on Tuesday next week!

B6 B9 P3 and P1. This last unit P1 is very tricky once you get past 85 points because it is in the tens of thousands. You can stop at 85 if this is too tricky.

Please read a really good book over the holidays and enjoy it. You will most likely be able to quiz on it when you get back to school!
Nursery photographs
Tempest photographers will be coming in on Wednesday the 16th October 2019. Individual and sibling photographs will be taken during the morning. If you have children who are not in school but you wish to have a photograph taken with their siblings in school, then please email school to Mrs Hodges, bursar@ourladystarofthesea.lancs.sch.uk as we will have to ask you to come in early and be here for 8:30am. We need to hear from you so that we can assess numbers.
