Year 6 Mixed Dynamo Cricket Tournament- Tuesday 17th June

This will start at 1pm and finish around 4:30 at Lytham Cricket Club, FY8 5QD.

The children will need to be picked up from school at 12:30pm and taken to the cricket club. It is advised to buddy up and car share if possible. Parents are welcome to stay and watch if you are available.

The children will need to be in their PE kits and bring a bottle of water and sun cream if the weather it hot on the day.

Mechanisms- Moving Monsters.

This half term has flown by with an action- packed term of learning! We have been looking at Mechanisms, in particular, pivots and levers. The children have investigated and explored everyday items that use a mechanism to operate. We have thought about the input and the output of a device and what happens in between! Through exploration, the children used levers and pivots to make linkages. Using this knowledge and through discussion, we came up with a design- criteria to plan and create a moving monster for a Year 1 child. The children were so proud with their end product!

Next half term we are moving on to Food Technology, where they will be looking at nutrition and a healthy balanced diet, focusing on the different food types. They will then go on to use their knowledge, to design and make a healthy wrap. Your class teacher will let you know in advance of any ingredients that you child will need to bring for their session.

Year 5 Weekly Blog 23.05.25- ‘Fail to prepare, prepare to fail’

What a final week of Summer 1 it has been! A change of personnel for the first half of the week with the absence of Mr Cornwell. In steps Mrs Woodend. She was blown away with the children’s attitude, behaviour and changes in maturity since she last taught them- an excellent welcoming return. Hard work continued throughout these three days with the children finishing their independent writing about their final discussion text, along with tacking more and more percentages of amounts. We also took another step in our historical timeline of crime and punishment, with us entering the 17th Century- where punishments became bloodier!

To finish our English topic, the class split into two teams and worked together to create arguments for their final debating question, this time in a more formal setting. This question can be found below in conversation starters. We finished off this day with the much anticipated final gymnastics lesson of the year with the class challenging themselves on the big apparatus! We ended our week with the entire class out in the morning either at forest school or out swimming at this years gala at Paletine. The children represented the school so well and helped the school achieve their highest ever finish at the swimming gala.

Let’s Celebrate

• Learner of the Week- This week our award goes to Louis for being a determined learner. Fail to prepare, prepare to fail. This is something that you value when it comes to your learning Louis. Your spelling test scores this year certainly prove this as you are constantly achieving full marks week in week out. This will pay off as you go into your final year of Our Lady’s. Brilliant work!

• Virtue Star of the Week- Our virtues for this half term are curious and active and our winner this week goes to Hugo. Staying alert and focused during lessons is such an important factor in learning progression. Us teachers like to test this with lots of cold calling. Whenever I come to you, you are always ready to provide the right answer which always brings a smile to my face. Keep this up!

• Homework- Please check the homework blog to keep on track of your child’s SPAG, multiplication and division practice and also their reading.

• Forest School- This will take place every Friday for this half term. You will be sent a text the previous night to make aware who is doing this on which day as the class are split into groups. The children will just need to bring in a change spare of clothes- ones suitable for outdoor activities and working within a forest environment. Long clothing will be needed (no shorts).

Year 6 Weekly Blog 'Life is all about taking risks. If you never take a risk, you will never achieve your dreams'

What a wonderful time we have had on our residential! The sun was shining to whole time, which meant we could spend all our time outside, perfect to complete all the outdoor activities PGL had to offer! Every single child has reached their potential, challenged themselves to push beyond what they thought they were capable of and have shown such resilience and bravery! We could not be any prouder of them all. Every single one of them have supported their friends and as you can see from the photos there has been so much laughter and joy. We have all climbed, swung from a giant swing, shot arrows in archery, build a raft for on the lake and completed many problems and challenges- it was a very varied week!

The final night, was the perfect finale of our stay as we were treated to array of talented acts at the campfire. From theatrical performances, poems, dances, magic acts and a guitarist, to name but a few! What a range of talented bunch of children you have!

Year 6 have now all been given their roles for the end of year play- we are so excited to get started on it! I know each child will embrace their role and they will be encouraged both at school and home with great enthusaism! Every role in the play is crucial. Just like in a team, each member plays a significant part in working towards the shared goal. They will contribute to the overall success of the performance as a whole and help create something truly memorable. It will be a show  you won’t forget because they all played a part in creating it and we can’t wait!

Leading Learners

Well done to Jacob!

Jacob we were so proud of your bravery during residential… you started off nervous and cautious in some of the activities but the next day you woke up with a fresh attitude. We loved the way you challenged yourself to go beyond what you thought you could do- this takes such bravery!

Curious and Active stars

This half term we will be on the lookout for all the children that are curious in their , finding God in all things. Those who are active, who use their learning for the common good. Those who learn through actively engaging through probing, seeking, asking, challenging and questioning until the truth is plain. These children are the role models of the school, who drive their own learning and who have the wisdom to know when and how to apply one’s learning. This week we thank Rose for being both curious and wise.

Sculpture and 3D- Mega Materials

Time flies when you’re having fun! This half term the children have looked at and turned their hand to using varying materials to produce a sculpture. There have been many challenges in this topic with adapting and manipulating such differing materials, but none the less, everyone had a good go! From sculpting a bar of soap, to creating a 2D wire sculpture, many skills were needed through this half term! 

Next half term, we are turning our attention to Food Technology, where we will look at nutrition and how to adapt a recipe for personal choice. Our first lesson was terribly hard as we tasted and evaluated existing biscuits on the market! We will also be looking at budgeting, marketing and packaging

Mechanisms- Pop Up Book

My goodness, what a short half term with all those Bank Holidays! It has indeed flown by! This half term we have revisited mechanisms and have learned how to create a pop up. Through discussion of a design- criteria and planning, the children have created a pop- up book that they can share with their Year 1 partner.  Many skills are revisited in this topic from accurate cutting skills, the thought process of how something will move and the technique of layering so that the moveable mechanisms are hidden. We will complete this topic the first week back. I will add photos of all their hard work after the break.

Next half term, we are moving io to Food Tech, where we will be looking at nutritional values and adapting a basic Bolognaise Sauce to enhance flavour and nutritional value. Your class teacher will let you know in advance what ingredient your child will need to bring in for their session.

Electrical Systems- Steady Hand Game

How quick this half term has flown! In design technology this term, we have used our scientific knowledge of electrical systems to aid us with our topic. Through exploration of toys, we have thought about a product being fit for purpose, its function, aesthetics and target audience prior to the planning process. The children used their mathematical knowledge to produce a base made from nets. Then added their electrical system that included a buzzer. I am sure you can imagine the noise level within class as each child became successful in their task, producing a working toy!  

Next half term, we turn our attention to Food Tech, where they will plan a nutritious three course meal in groups. We have an added twist this year where they will be cooking it all in Forest School. Miss Lavelle and I are really excited to be doing this and cannot wait to see what they come up with! Your class teacher will let you know in advance what ingredients your child will need for their session.

Pneumatic Systems- Pneumatic toy

This half term has been action packed with learning! The beauty of Design Technology is that it links to so many other subjects. Pneumatics certainly go hand in hand with science. We have explored and investigated what pneumatics are and how they worked. The children then used this knowledge through discussion, to come up with a design-criteria for a moving toy. Thinking about safety, aesthetics ang the pneumatics. They had such fun planning and creating their toys! 

Next half term, we are moving onto Food Technology, where we will be looking at nutrition and seasonal ingredients, then using that knowledge to design a healthy, seasonal tart. Your class teacher will let you know in advance what ingredients your child will need to bring for their session.

Year 4 Weekly blog Friday 23rd May "Christ has no body but yours, no hands, no feet on Earth but yours." St Teresa of Avila

Two beautiful events on consecutive weekends! Well done to all children who made their First Holy Communion in the last fortnight. You must feel so close to Jesus. This week, in RE lessons, children have looked at ways in which the people of the church continue the work of Jesus and have studied the communion of Saints.

This week in maths, children have been looking at how to scale numbers and how this can help them solve multiplication and division with much larger numbers. We have now moved onto learning about shape - it has been all about different triangles in the last few days.

This week in our English lessons, we have been describing the Fire-Fiend and then finishing our novel. Children have then written stories based on this and also composed limericks about the characters!

On Tuesday afternoon, many Year children represented the school in A striking and Fielding event. They were impeccably behaved as usual and enjoyed practising their techniques.

Our last Science lesson on souns saw us learning about loudness and pitch. We discovered what is actually happening to sound waves in these two different phenomena.

In PE, we have been practising for sports day - and honing our catching, aiming and running skills

First Tuesday back - 10th June, children are making biscuits in DT with Mrs Mather. Here is the ingredients list to bring in on Tuesday.

On Friday 13th June, the children will be celebrating a mass with lots of other new Holy Communicants at St Joseph’s parish. They will attend in full school uniform and we will walk there. They will be having a picnic lunch - so please bring a packed lunch on this day.

Thursday 19th June Its our annual Gym Jam Jog. Children can come in wearing their PJ’s. Sponsor forms have gone out this week so lets get collecting!

On Sunday 6th July we are having the last school family mass in church. On this day, we are asking that all our First Holy Communicants come to church dressed in their outfits. They are then invited with you to the parish centre for a Holy Communion breakfast, organised by the parish. Please could you fill in the form below so we can get ideas of numbers?

Mechanisms- Pull along Toy

This half term has been action packed with learning! We have been looking at mechanisms, in particular wheels and axels. The children have investigated what shape makes the ideal wheel and how they turn on an axel. They have practiced and fine tuned their skill of cutting a circle accurately and effectively using varying thicknesses of card. Through discussion, we came up with a design-criteria to make a pull along toy for a 1 year old child. This included safety aspects, aesthetics and the mechanism of the wheels and axels. The children have had such fun designing and making their toy, as you can see!

Next half term we are moving on to Food Technology, where we will be looking at nutrition and making smoothies. Your class teacher will let you know in advance, any ingredients that your child will be need to bring in for their session.

How blessed we have been with the weather!

How blessed we have been with the weather! The sun has shone, the temperature has risen, which has meant that the children have opted to spend as much time as possible outside. After a hard days’ work, there is nothing better than blue skies and fresh air.  Snack time has been enjoyed outside on the benches and a little treat on the hotter days with an ice pop to cool us down! Inside activities have included VE Day, St Georges Day and artworks for our summer display. Although a quick half term, the children have enjoyed relaxing and being together. Friendships are blossoming and new ones made on a daily basis.  

Thank you for your continuing support in our new venture- I cannot believe there is only one term left! It has been a joy and a pleasure to be able to support you with our wrap around care.

We will reopen on Monday 9th June at 7:45 am for breakfast club.

Last week some of our friends went on a tour of Our Lady’s church with Father Peter. We found out such a lot! Father showed us the font, tabernacle, stained glass windows and all the stations of the cross. Try and ask your child about our tour when you go to Mass on Sunday.

Worship

This week during prayer and liturgy we have been discussing Ascension Day (click here) and Pentecost (click here).

Ascension Day is the 40th day of Easter. It occurs 39 days after Easter Sunday and it focuses on Jesus' ascension after his resurrection, and the message that he gave to his disciples right before he was taken to heaven. It also tells of the coming of the Holy Spirit (Pentecost) as promised by Jesus.

The children have been drawing pictures of what they think heaven looks like with Steph, we are going to put them in our Worship book.

Hello everyone.

I can't believe it’s half-term already! 

We have been very busy painting characters for our display all about 'Once upon a time stories'. The children decided which characters they would like to see on the display. We had Little Red Riding Hood, Goldilocks and the Three Bears, The Three Little Pigs, Rapunzel, The Big Bad Wolf and many more. All of the characters are from the stories we have been focusing on this half term. They have enjoyed role playing these stories too. We also made a magnificent fairy tale castle with a very long turret for Rapunzel to live in. We used lots of sparkles and metallic paints. It looks so magical, we are so proud of our display.

I hope you all have a fabulous half term. I can't wait to hear what you have all been up to. 

Fingers crossed for the sun to keep shining for us.

Hello everyone and welcome to this week's blog.

This week we have taken part in lots of different fun challenges. We started with the buzz wire game, where the children had to have a steady hand to be able to move along the buzz wire without setting the buzzer off. It was very tricky. We then had a challenge to see if we could carry the most water from one end of the garden from the other using a scoop. We worked in our house teams and concentrated not to spill any. The next challenge was to work together to fill the numicon board. Numicons use physical shapes and tools to represent numbers and maths. They help children to better visualise the relationship and value of numbers. Each Numicon shape represents a specific number.

This activity was tricky as the shapes didn't all fit at first. The children had to work out that some shapes had to be moved and turned make them to fit on the board. However, we did manage it in the end. The last challenge was a subitising quiz where the children had to say how many objects they could see. They said they wanted to challenge you, so here it is. Sports Day

For the children attending Sports Day on Wednesday 11th June 1.15-3.30 pm; could you please ensure your child is wearing shorts, t-shirt and trainers. Also, could you please bring a named bottle of water please.

Your child will have designed their own t shirt to wear during Sports Day, which we have in nursery. Please note before washing the t shirt you must press it for at least three minutes to seal in the colour.

Gym Jam Jog

Thursday 19th June is our fundraising Gym Jam Jog! Please come to school for 8 am and jog with us around the school field to to raise funds for our PTFA so that we can continue to enhance the school environment. It is great fun so join us and get inloved!!! See you there…bright and early and wearing your gym jams.

Induction for September school starters

Thursday 19th of June 3.45-4.45 pm is also the induction session for children joining Reception at Our Lady’s in September 2025. Pop it in your diary. It’s a great chance to meet the team and visit receptions classroom.

Year 4 homework for over the half term holidays

No formal homework as such over the holidays but it would be really good if you could focus on your times tables and read a good book ready to quiz when you return

I have handed out some times tables tests that we do in class where you could ask someone to time you and then mark them together (as we do in class)

I will not be collecting these in to mark - it is for you to use them to help you. You also have the songs below if there are still some you are shaky on. Of course, you can work on TTrockstars to increase your rock star status and will set you some ‘Beat the teacher’ challenges on Rockslam.

Winmarleigh Day 3!

What a wonderful fews day it has been- your children have been wonderful from start to finish. They have embraced every moment and every activity! I bet you can’t wait to hear all about it!
