Year 1 Weekly Blog 18.09.26

We have had another busy week in Year 1, with the children continuing to settle into our routines while getting stuck into lots of new learning. There has been plenty of exploring, practising and, of course, lots of questions along the way!

RE

This week we have continued our unit on ‘Creation & Covenant’. We looked more deeply into the Creation story, recognising it as an ancient, prayerful, and poetic reflection on God's world.

We thought about how the story of Creation reminds us of how much God loves us through all that He has made. We took our 'binoculars' outside to become Creation explorers, spotting and talking about things around us that God created.

We finished our lesson with bubble prayers, saying something we were thankful to God for as we blew our bubbles.

English

We have been continuing with our All About Me topic and have started creating our own All About Me pages. The children have been putting all the skills we have been practising into action, remembering their capital letters, full stops and finger spaces to help them form a perfect sentence.

Maths

In Maths, we have been using our subitising skills and continuing our journey of counting objects. We have been practising looking carefully at groups of objects and recognising how many there are without always needing to count each one.

Wider learning

With Mrs Hunter, the children have been learning about the seasons in Science and diving into their music lessons. They have also been getting creative with Mrs Mather during Art.

GOING DEEPER IN CONVERSATION

Reflecting on our RE lessons so far, you might want to have a lovely conversation with your child about what they have learned so far about the Creation story! This might be using questions such as: ‘Can you remember what God created on each of the seven days? Which part of Creation are you most thankful for and why?’

HRSE

In HRSE, we have been learni

ng about keeping safe online. We talked about some of the positives and negatives of using the internet and began to think about how we can make safe choices when using different types of content.

We also looked at age ratings and what these mean when we are watching or accessing different types of content.

Year 1 Weekly Blog 11.09.26

What a super week it has been in our first full week of Year 1! The children have settled in so well and are already settling into their new routines and expectations brilliantly!

RE

We began our RE curriculum this week with our first unit being ‘Creation & Covenant’. We started looking at the Creation story and really enjoyed bringing it to life using different objects and pictures as we retold what happened. It was lovely to see the children getting involved and remembering different parts of the story as we went along.


Maths

In Maths, we have been practising counting objects within 10. We have been working carefully to make sure that we count each object once and can say how many there are altogether in a group, making sure we can count from any number up to 10.

English

We have been continuing with our All About Me topic and have been working hard on our simple sentences. This week, we have been focusing on remembering our capital letters, full stops and finger spaces. The children have been practising these skills in their writing and are becoming much more confident about what a sentence needs.

Our wider learning

The children have also enjoyed their PE and Science sessions with Mrs Hunter, as well as getting creative in Art with Mrs Mather. It has been a busy week, and the children have enjoyed having the opportunity to explore lots of different areas of learning as well as learning through play in provision.

It was lovely to meet so many of you on Wednesday at induction evening and to finally put some names to faces. If you didn’t manage to make induction evening or you missed any key details from the night, here is a copy of the slides from the presentation.

GOING DEEPER IN CONVERSATION

In HRSE this week, we have been looking at bullying, saying “NO” and trusted adults. We talked about what bullying might look like, how we can say “NO” if something doesn’t feel right and, most importantly, who we can go to for help. The children shared some really thoughtful ideas about the trusted adults they have around them and why it is important to speak to someone if we are worried.

Year 1 Weekly Blog Friday 4th September 2026

What a lovely first two days we have had in Year 1! The children have settled in so well and it has been great to see them getting used to their new classroom, new routines and, of course, being back with their friends.

In English, we have started our new All About Me topic by looking at what a sentence is and what we need to include when we write one. We have been practising saying sentences aloud and remembering our capital letters and full stops.

In Maths, we have been practising counting forwards and backwards within 10. We have also revisited the composition of 5, thinking about the different ways to make 5 in our maths mastery.

Next week in RE, we are looking at the creation story in an immersive way!

GOING DEEPER IN CONVERSATION

At the beginning of every year we start with our Safeguarding lesssons for children. These help the children to know how to keep safe. This week (session 1) we have reflected on feeling specifically “yucky” feelings. This does not mean the feelings are bad - it mean they are telling us something is wrong. Ask your child what the “yucky feelings” are and what they can do if they have them.

Homework

On Tuesday 8/9/26, i will send home the homework books. The children’s homework is to just decorate the front of the books and make it their own! This could be with pictures, drawings, backing paper- whatever you like! Please keep their name labels visible. We will need their books back for monday please!

As agreed, through our school council, our learning awards will no longer be handed out in assembly on Friday. We now have mini certficates for learning which can be given when we spot amazing learning in class. Keep an eye out for these - many will be coming your way!

Year 1's final weekly blog of the year 17.7.26!

What can we say?! It has been an absolute gift to teach your children this year. It is truly such a blessing to welcome their smiley faces each morning, hear the lastest updates about all of the wonderful things that they have been up to and to be a part of their primary school journey!

We have had a busy final week together and a huge thank you for all of the generous donations towards our CAFOD fundraiser! The children definitely earnt their donations as lots and lots of walking took place!

We also shared a wonderful prayer and liturgy with our Year 5 partners…

Today has been full of celebration and happy tears! We started the day with our Star Charter assembly which was just brilliant! There really is so much to celebrate!

We would also like to say the biggest thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your very kind and generous gifts, we are overwhelmed and extremally grateful!

Year 1 Weekly Blog 10.7.26 - "Listen at least as much as you talk."

In this week’s Gospel, Jesus shares with us the very special parable of the Sower. Jesus tells this parable to encourage us to listen to Him and to act on what Jesus tells us to do. In class we thought about this, what does Jesus want us to do. The children shared many thoughts, “to be kind to everyone,” and “to look after our world to help all of the creatures.”

This week we have been thinking about who we will be when we grow up. We have discussed how jobs are for anyone, no jobs for girls and jobs for boys. We have also thought about our talents and how we can use these… Please spend some times together thinking and sharing your own unique gifts and talents and how you could use these talents to make other people happy

The children have been so looking forward to sports day and on Monday afternoon we took to the field and really enjoyed each event! The children tried so hard and most importantly worked as a team, celebrating one another which was so wonderful! Well done everyone and a big thank you to all of you who came to cheer us on!

Year 1 Weekly Blog 3.7.26 - "The Lord is my companion, there is no need that He cannot fulfil"

In this week’s Gospel, Jesus encourages us to take time to rest, something which is sometimes easier than said. Jesus tells us this because he is our companion, he cares for us all and wants us to be able to really be true followers of him. During RE we have been thinking about our parish and how we can be helpers. The children thought of so many wonderfully kind and helpful acts that we can all do every day! Our Catholic social teaching this year has been ‘Putting people most in need first’. The children have really taken to that and lots of our discussion was about how we can help the people in our community and the wider world.

Who is your companion and why? What do they do that makes them a good companion. Can you think of some ways that you are going to help them to feel your appreciation for how they help and care for you.

This week we had our transition day and all of our Year 1 children went to spend Thursday morning with Mrs Hotchkiss and Miss Forster in Year 2. The children blew both teachers away and I know that Year 1 are going to have such a wonderful year in Year 2. They have worked so hard this year and each and every child has grown in so many ways. It has truly been a gift to teach them all this year and I know their wings are ready to take off and fly in Year 2!

We have kept busy in class and were shocked when we found a letter written from Lorraine our train! Lorraine was feeling a little lonely so the children used their expert knowledge of trains to design new friends for her… she has been feeling much happier ever since! We have also really enjoyed exploring money, sorting coins and discovering what they look like!

A huge well done to Adele who has been awarded our Star award this week. Adele is always trying her absolute most and her behaviour actively helps our classroom to be calm!

Year 1 Weekly Blog 26.6.26 - "Faith and love are everything, and nothing is more precious than these." Saint Ignatius of Antioch

In this week’s Gospel, Jesus asks His friends who they think He is. Peter answers bravely, saying that Jesus is the Son of God. We learn that it is important to believe in Jesus and be brave enough to say it. It also reminds us that God helps us to have faith, and we can all do our part to be kind, strong, and help others as part of God’s family.

This week we have been thinking all about the communities we live in. We have discovered that we are a part of different communities. We have also thought about how we can help our communities.

With the sun shining this week Mrs Gregan organised the best surprise for the children on Friday… the ICE CREAM VAN CAME! The children were so excited when it pulled up and enjoyed their ice cream’s under the trees shade! What a lovely memory!

Year 1 weekly blog 19.6.26: "When we feel good we do good!" - My Happy Mind

In this weeks Gospel we have listened to Jesus give COURAGE to his disciples to continue the church’s mission to spread for Good News and to heal people. We have thought carefully about the times we need courage and how we can ask Jesus for his help in these moments. In RE we have been learning about items our Parish church and all of the very special things inside each Catholic church. I wonder if you can remember what a crucifix, lectern or tabernacle are?

This week we in My Happy mind we have been engaging with our brains and how we can make ourselves feel good. We have discussed what we can do that makes us feel happy and how we can make sure our body feel’s happy by taking care of it. We then learned the phrase, “We when feel good we do good”, and we all agreed that we want to do good! We discovered that setting ourselves goals can make us feel happy.

In Thursday something very exciting happened, we have a class pet! After lots of predicting what it could be, we were shocked to find out that it was actually a TRAIN! We have been super busy learning all about different types of trains and how fast they can go. After some time researching we discovered that a mini steam train is the slowest train and the high speed train was the fastest going as quick as 217mph!

We have also been busy pracitising for the different events in this years sports day….

Finally, we have been getting in the spirit of the World Cup and have finished making every flag for each country that is taking part. The children worked with a partner, sharing their ideas and skills to create a flag between them. They all used their cooperative skills wonderfully!

Year 1 Weekly Blog 12.6.26 - "Where Christ is, there is the kingdom of God." St Ambrose

In this week’s Gospel we listen as Jesus gives power to the 12 apostles to go and heal the sick and to share with everyone the God’s kingdom. We have thought carefully about how we can choose to do this each day too by saying either kind or unkind words, helping or not helping. In Year 1 all the children shared their desires to be kind, love each other and help God’s world because he loves us all.

In RE we have been learning about Christian symbols and have focused on making the sign of the cross. We now understand that when we make the sign of the cross we are saying a prayer that reminds us of our faith: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The children all completed some lovely work to share with us how important it is to make the sign of the cross.

This week we had lots of fun by creating a flag belonging to one of the countries taking part in this years World Cup. If you can remember which countries flag you made we would like you to try and find out an interesting fact about that country. If you can’t remember, choose any of the countries and see what you can find out!

Magic moments

As you know the children have all completed their Phonics screening check this week and we could not be more proud of the children. They were all fantastic and used all of the skills that they have worked so hard on this year. It is such a joy to see the children’s love of reading, and this is what is truly important! We have given our reading area a little spruce up and we have really loved sharing books together each day, again the children just LOVE books! A huge well done to all of the children, you are all becoming such confident and happy readers. We are all so proud of you!

We also had such fun at this half terms ENRICHMENT. The children used their creativity with Mrs Naylor and created lovely artwork using lots of buttons!

A huge well done to Maggie who has been awarded our Star award this week. Maggie you are such a gentle kind and understanding little girl! You have been so ACTIVE in your learning throughout the year and your progress is absolutely amazing. A huge well done!

Our learning certificate has been awarded to Daisy for being such a brave, have a go, learner! It is such a joy to see your confidence grow and you tackle your learning challenges knowing and believing that you can do it, and do it well! We are so proud of you!

Year 1 Weekly blog 22.5.26 - "The Holy Spirit transforms us and wants to transform the world." - Pope Francis

This week in church we will be celebrating Pentecost, the moment the disciples received the Holy Spirit. Over the past few RE lesson we have been focusing on the Holy Spirit! Last week they made their own Holy Spirit crafts and this week we have explored artwork before creating our own. We have also started to think about how the Holy Spirit can help us. In our prayer and liturgy’s we have shared the gifts of the Holy Spirit such as; kindness, gentleness, self control, peace, courage… and the children have thought about which gift they want the Holy Spirit to give them. We have also been busy learning the Glory Be prayer, understanding that when we say this prayer we are praising God and telling Him how much we love Him.

This week in My Happy Mind we have been learning all about ‘active listening’. I wonder if you can show your families how to actively listen to somebody.

Magic moments

This week we enjoyed our Forest school take over day which was just fantastic. The children loved spending the afternoon exploring the outdoors and being together with their friends. We had fantastic tree climbing, hammock swinging, craft making, den building, bird spotting and mud splat bee making fun! We are so lucky to have this special environment in our school! We ended our session with some quiet meditation listening the the sounds around us, some of the children were so relaxed that they didn’t want to get up! However, the chocolate biscuits were the perfect temptation!

At the end of this half term the children have awarded our learner of the Half term certificate to Lillie for such fantastic learning which has been noticed by all of your friends!

And our Star to Daisy who is gently kind, caring and wants to look after others. You do things just to be kind!

Sports day: It is Year 1 and 2’s sports day on Wednesday 10th June at 1:30pm. We hope you can make it!

Phonics screening check: During our first week back it will be Phonics screening, the children are so well prepared and their confidence is soaring. During the half term, please help to keep their confidence high through a couple of daily videos using the Ruth Miskin QR codes (10 minutes a day is recommended). Keep practising with the sound cards, I know a lot of the children are enjoying playing teachers at home with these! Of course, keep reading together, this really encourages a love of reading which is what we really want for our little ones!

Year 1 Weekly blog 15.5.26: "There is nothing on this earth more to be prized than true friendship" - St Thomas Aquinas

In this weeks Gospel we listen to the time Jesus spoke to his father to tell Him that he has done what is was sent to do. He then prays for his friends the Disciples. We are encouraged to think about our friendships and what a gift they are. The children have spent time thinking about all of their friends and how they can help them. We discussed the question, “What makes a good friend?” The children all gave their own opinions but the main thoughts were: someone who helps us, care for us, and make us feel special! We have also been learning more about the Holy Spirit, exploring artwork and creating our own Holy Spirit crafts.

Can you share stories together about times you have felt loved and cared for because of a friend?

Jesus is our friend too. He cares and loves us all. Think of a way you could show Jesus that you are His friend too.

This week we have started each day with a special prayer for our Year 6 friends who have been working very hard completing their SATs. We have also welcomed back the wonderful Mrs Lavelle, who has returned back from her maternity leave and will now be spending each Thursday in Year 1. The children made her feel very welcome and are very excited to see her again next week! We have finished our learning about the great fire of London and the children worked in small teams to design a new London, which would help to make sure the great fire would not happen again. The children were full of knowledge and made sure that the London they created had buildings that were not made of wood or too close together, bridges to help the people of London move around safely, and that the firefighters were much better equipped! Well done Year 1!

A big well done to Adele who has been awarded our star award this week! Adele you are SO attentive towards others and to our classroom too! You are so kind and caring, always wanting the best for others. You are the most wonderful learner whose beautiful behaviour helps the rest of your friends in class to learn too. You are a real joy!

Another huge well done to Willow who has been awarded our Determined certificate this week. A huge well done Willow! You blew our socks of with your independent writing this week You were so focused and determined and we are so proud of your wonderful effort! You put the biggest smile on our faces Willow! Each day you come running into class to share with Miss Hennessy and I something that has made you laugh or something you are very excited about. Never change Willow, you brighten everyone’s day!

Reminders

Forest school take over day! On Wednesday 20th May Year 1 will have their afternoon out exploring our forest school. This is a 2 hour session so please make sure that your child has suitable clothing, baring in mind how varied the weather is currently.

Half term: We break up for the half term on Friday 22nd May and we return on Monday 8th June.

Sports day: It is Year 1 and 2’s sports day on Wednesday 10th June at 1:30pm. We hope you can make it!

Bamber have won this half term’s house points and so the children in this house can wear their house colour on Friday!

Year 1 Weekly Blog 8.5.26 - "Let your Holy Spirit be your helper and guide" - Pope Saint John Paul ||

In this weeks Gospel we hear Jesus telling his Disciples to let the Holy Spirit to be their helper. We have reflected on how the Holy Spirit is our helper too as we continue to spread the good news, that God loves us all. In RE We have been thinking about the church’s mission and how it is our job now to share the church with everyone. Year 1 thought of lots of ways that they can do this, such as by helping people who are sad. They each completed a checklist with ways they are going to share our church’s mission and throughout the week they have been ticking their kind actions off.

This week we have celebrated David Attenborourgh’s 100 Year birthday! To celebrate we watched clips of his documentaries and the children then all thought about their favourite living creatures. We then created our own artwork to celebrate our beautiful world.

This week we say goodbye to our wonderful student teacher Miss Charnley. Miss Charnley has been such a wonderful part of the children’s learning over the term and she has really loved being a part of their learning journey. We know you are going to have a wonderful teaching journey!

Year 1 Weekly Blog 1.5.26 - "Those who trust in God can do all things." - St Alphonsus Liguori

In this weeks Gospel we hear how Jesus prepared the Disciples for His departure and told them not to worry, but to trust in Jesus. We have been focused on this in our RE learning, the children have all been busy acting out Pentecost, showing great knowledge about what happened. We have also been learning about Holy days and what this means. The children loved sharing their own experiences and memories of their own holidays, before hearing about how other countries celebrate the special Holy Day which is Pentecost.

This week we have discussed the word, ‘Trust’. Can you remember what it means to trust someone? Who do you trust and why? Can you remember a time when someone trusted you?

This week had such fun in our PE lessons! The children love to challenge themselves! We have been developing our throwing skills, in particular our rolling and under arm throws. Enjoy the photographs of our indoor PE lesson this week!

Year 1 Weekly Blog 24.4.26 - "To follow Jesus means to share His merciful love." Pope Francis

This Sunday is Good Shepherd Sunday and in the Gospel reading we listen to the parable Jesus told His disciples about the good shepherd. Jesus is the Good Shepherd and we have been thinking carefully about how we can be good followers of Him. In RE we have been learning all about the word ‘Ascension’ and we now know that this means to go up, and that is exactly what Jesus did, He went you to be with His father in Heaven, leaving the apostles to continue the work of Jesus. “Christ has no body but yours, No hands, no feet on earth but yours, Yours are the eyes with which he looks Compassion on this world,” The children have thought of many wonderful ways that we can be Jesus’ body and help to care for everyone.

This week we have been thinking about the internet and how it can bring everybody together, The children enjoyed sharing the things they like to do using the internet and how these things make them feel. We also spoke about how God wants us to feel happy, both in our real lives and our online lives. Continue this conservation at home: Who can we talk to if something upsets us online?

Magic moments

This week had such fun with Miss Charnley, who taught the children all about following instructions when introducing the new computing unit. The children gave Miss Charnley instructions for how to make her jam sandwich… At first these instructions led Miss Charley to make a rather unusual sandwich. As the children became more specific they were able to help her to create the perfect sandwich. The children then partnered up and gave each other instructions to make their own sandwiches, which they very much enjoyed eating!

This week you completed some fantastic independent writing and really pushed yourself to include such exciting vocabulary. We are so proud of you!

Weather: We have been blessed with great weather this week and long may it continue. However we still advise bringing in a coat in case the weather changes during the school day. we also have a box with sun cream in the classroom. Any sun cream must be labelled and the children are encouraged to apply this themselves.

PE days are on Mondays and Wednesdays.

Year 1 Weekly Blog 17.4.26 - "“To love well is to notice deeply.”"

In this weeks Gospel we have listened to the piece of scripture when two of Jesus’ friends were walking to the town of Emmaus and during their journey a man came and walked alongside them sharing pieces of scripture. At first His friends didn’t recognise Jesus, until they were sharing a meal with Him and Jesus broke the bread and their eyes were opened. During our prayer and liturgy led by the children we reflected on this and thought about how we can open our eyes to see Jesus too. The children spoke about how when they see people helping others they see Jesus and this is our mission this week! We children have also been busy in RE reflecting on Jesus’ story and worked together to create fantastic games to retell His life.

This week we have began our new My Happy Mind branch ‘Relate’ please discuss the following question at home, “Why do you think it’s important to be kind and talk to other people?”… What happens when we help someone?… How do we feel when someone listens to us?

Magic moments

This week had great excitement when we found a mystery time machine which had tipped our classroom upside down! The children were full of curiosity as they tried to discover the clues and come to their own predictions for who or what might have visited our classroom. The evidence we found were dinosaur footprints, lots of sticks and a very old letter explaining that they had come from the Stone Age. Using this evidence we narrowed it down to either a dinosaur, a caveman… even possibly a return from the Evil Pea. All great suggestions. Today we found even more evidence as the camera we set up caught a small dinosaur walking out of the Time Machine… Let’s see what happens next over the coming weeks!

We have also had ENRICHMENT this week. Our Year 1’s went to visit Mrs Lyons in her classroom and learnt some musical theatre skills!

Year 1 Weekly Blog 2.4.26 - "He is not here; he has risen!" - Luke 24:6-7

This week is always so special at Our Lady’s. I will never forget my first Easter here and being in awe at the children’s understanding and emotion when retelling Holy Week, it is always incredible and this year was no different! In class we have spent time reflecting on what we have watched our junior friends portray and each child is coming home with their own Easter reflection book that they have made. We have had tears and so many questions which is so moving. Our children are so young and yet have such a passion in understanding what Jesus went through in His final weeks. I could not be more proud of all our children!

Children’s awards

Our children have chosen both awards this term. It was so lovely to hear their thoughts as to who they feel has shown our learning virtues and who has been a super learner. I think every child was voted by someone! However, a huge and well deserved congratulations to Lily, who was awarded the Star, for being a super kind friend and for always looking after others! Another huge congratulations to Roxie who has been awarded the learning certificate! Your class friends have noticed what a wonderful creative learner you are!

Year 1 Weekly blog 27.3.26 - "Holy Week is a chance for us to give our hearts. On the cross He gave us all of His love." - St Teresa of Calcutta

In this weeks Gospel we celebrate Palm Sunday, the start of Holy Week, the most important week of our Church’s year. The children have a really good understanding of this moment when Jesus travelled to Jerusalem and the crowds so happily waved their palm leaves, shouting “Hosanna”. All our learning in RE this half term has been focused around Holy Week. The children have retold Palm Sunday through our own drama and have had the absolute pleasure of watching Year 2’s amazing assembly today! Everybody has come home with their own palm cross to carry with them throughout Holy Week.

This week have have finished our unit in Maths which has been discovering shapes. This has been a real joy of a unit, one which we have adored observing the children as they have explored shapes, rotation and different pattern making. They have really enjoyed exploring this element of their spacial reasoning as have we!

Year 1 weekly blog 20.3.27 - "Compassion for the suffering is the beginning of holiness." - St. Maximilian Kolbe

In this Sunday’s Gospel we focus on being COMPASSIONATE just as Jesus shows us. We hear about the time Jesus discovers that His dear friend Lazarus has died and how Jesus weeps for him and his family. Jesus shows great compassion towards them and therefore we look to do the same towards others. In Year 1 we have been trying to be compassionate to each other, just like Jesus wants us to. The children have been thinking about each others feelings and trying to go that extra mile to help. In RE we are journeying to the cross with Jesus, the children led a beautiful prayer and liturgy all about the Last supper linking to their learning the previous day, we passed around the bread and gave thanks you Jesus for taking away our mistakes and always helping to be the best that we can be.

In My Happy Mind we are learning all about APPRECIATION. Who do you appreciate and why? How do you show your appreciation for them? Is there anything extra you could do to let them know how much you appreciate them?

Today we have had such a special morning. We are half way through Lent so it was a perfect time to celebrate mass together to reflect on our Lentern journeys so far. Following mass we went and shared a wonderful coffee morning in the parish centre. We met such lovely parishioners who the children sat and spoke to and drew special easter pictures for them.
