Year 6 Homework 2nd October 2019
English - work your way through strand B1 - B6 on IXL English. This is due to be completed next week.
Spelling - fasten, apostle, hasten, glisten, moisten, thistle, whistle, mortgage, Christmas, wrestle.
I will then test you on 10 random spellings from the last 4 weeks. Keep looking at them as well.
Geography - this is due in next week. I would like you to collate information on one of the South American countries. Things like: size, population, landmarks, food etc. Record in your homework book. We will be using technology to bring this information to life. Make sure that you have some of this information ready for next week.
Maths - A10, A11 and A12. These are all negative number work. This will be our focus in class.
Art - In art this week, you will be completing observational drawings. This is something that can be done on a computer as well. There is a to do set on Purple Mash - choose and object and bring it to life. Experiment with a range of tools. Remember that this is a piece of art.
Year 3 homework to be handed in Wednesday 9th October
SPELLING - We are continuing to look at words with prefixes. This week we will also focus on the prefix ‘in’. Prefixes always go before the root word. How many words can you collect in your homework books with the prefix ‘in’? Can you find any in your books? What do they mean? How does it change the meaning of the word? Can you put some of them in sentences?
We will also be continuing to learn by sight our tricky spellings:

We are trying lots of different ways to practice these in class- what exciting and fun ways can you think of to practice these words at home? Maybe produce some art work with the words? Write a silly story with the words in? Or even get the grown ups to keep quizzing you? We will have a quick quiz next week to see how well we have learnt them!
DON’T FORGET TO READ, READ AND READ SOME MORE!
Maths Try to complete as many as you can of the skip counting sections on IXL (between A1- A7) to help speed up our mental recall. Please try to complete at least two of these before next Wednesday. I can see some of you have been on IXL already this year to practice skills so well done!
Purple Mash Next week we will be evaluating your ‘lion and the Mouse’ fable retelling- have you finished it to the best of your ability? I will be looking at whether you have retold the story with words as well as pictures to show this, and whether the presentation is clear to follow.
OPTIONAL RE- In RE we are focusing on entering in to the Christian Family through the sacrament of Baptism. We will looking in to this in a lot more detail next week, so next Wednesday if you have any photographs or anything from your baptism that you would like to show to the class, you are more than welcome to bring it in to class on Wednesday for our RE lesson.

To continue the leadership theme that Year 6 have started, on Friday, they celebrated mass with other Year 6 children from our deanery schools. This was a very special time when all the children were asked to consider the responsibility of being a disciple of Christ. Fr Peter reminded them that just as Christ is the light of the world, they too are called to be lights for others.

What a lovely week it has been! We began on Monday morning with a reflective worship in our school chapel - all about creating the kingdom of God on earth, through loving one another. We have been so busy typing our improved explanation text all about Seed dispersal in our English lessons and today we planned our new one - The Life Cycle of A Flowering Plant. We dissected lilies to discover all its different male and female parts and we even looked at pollen through a microscope! All very exciting! We need next week to explain how plants are pollinated by bees - why not have a chat about it this weekend and watch a bee in action?
Other highlights this week included doing a Computing lesson all about how to effectively search on the internet where children found lots of different information. We have been getting to grips with 4 digit thousands numbers this week and we are understanding really well so far. We have also given out assembly parts today to practise over the weekend.
This week we have welcomed a new teaching assistant to our class - Miss Atkinson. She has fitted in seamlessly to class life already! Welcome to our school!
Let’s Celebrate
This week two Sadie Spider certificates for resilience were give out - one to Fin and one to Zac. You both try so hard boys and are role models for the class.
Our French stars this week were Lorna-Jane and Harvey.
Swimming stars were Harvey and Penny - super swimming you two!
We did pick Yoga stars too - but Mrs Lyons cannot remember who they were! Perhaps you do children! I know that we picked them for allowing themselves to be calm and still. A good skill to have!

Our class assembly is on Tuesday 8th October at 9.10 and again at 9.35
There are an incredible amount of PE jackets and even some PE trousers along with cardigans and jumpers in class. Most do not have names so I cannot give them out. I will leave them outside the class on Monday or Tuesday evening to be claimed!
Please could we make sure that all homework is completed and handed in on Thursdays so that it can be marked. Many thanks.

You will have notice that a big pack of words has come home with your child this weekend. DO NOT PANIC - these are not to be learned all in one week! These are to be kept at home and each week, I will ask your child to focus on and learn to spell one set. This week, I would like your child to learn how to spell set 1. You can do this in anyway which is best for your child. For example you may stick them around the house, you may write a couple out each night, you may write them out in sand or you may use the say, write, cover, check system. What ever is best for your child is fine. I would also like them to learn the following ‘al’ words:

My goodness! We have reached yet the end of another busy week here in Year 2 and it has gone so quickly, I don’t think some of the children can quite believe it’s the weekend … AGAIN! Each lesson has been brimmed with new and exciting learning for the children to throw themselves into and I’m still amazed by just how much enthusiasm the children show each day.

I cannot believe we are coming to the end of our 4th week- time flies when you are having fun! The children are working so hard, showing great enthusiasm and rising to the challenges Year 3 brings! In RE we have been discussing what is meant by our Christian family and what all our parish has to offer, before starting today to look at the Sacrament of Baptism, which is how we join our Christian family.

Dangerous story map
Children will be bringing home a copy of the Dangerous story map. Please encourage them to practise orally retelling the story with actions and enthusiasm.
Reading
As mentioned on the Induction Evening, the children will be bringing home a set of 6 words. Please support the children to learn these words inside out; the children need to be able to read these words on sight (not by Fredding in their head).
Every Monday/Tuesday the children will be tested on these words, if they know them fluently and confidently, they will be given the next set. There are 25 sets in total.
Please encourage the children to read as much as possible over the weekend. On Monday/Tuesday, the children will quiz on their accelerated reader book and will be given a new reading book. Children should be ready to quiz on their reading book on these days.

Our learning has continued at a fast pace and we have already moved onto the third set of sounds. We have also been busy using our sounds during ’Word time’ by blending the sounds together to hear two letter (VC: Vowel constant eg. at, am, it) words. In Art this week the children have created wonderful paintings of autumn leaves! Mrs Curtis was very impressed with their painting skills. Alongside all of this we have been busy focusing on a new learning character called, Roger Robin, who COOPERATES with others, learning from those around him! After hearing all about Roger’s story the children set off creating their own Roger robin. These are going to create a fantastic display!

Finley has been awarded a Roger Robin certificate for… Making such a wonderful shoulder partner during our class discussions. Miss Neves and I have watched as you kindly ask questions and listen to your partner. Well done Finley.
John Paul has been awarded a Bobby Bee certificate for… Always being such a happy and positive learner. You show great enthusiasm during your learning and always have a wonderful smile on your face! You are always surrounded by others because of your friendly, smiley nature. Thank you John Paul.
Our Phonic sounds this week are:
Set 3 sounds: d, i, n, and o. Please practise forming these at home by using the sound cards provided. We have also continued to spend time practising ‘Fred Talk’. This is our special way of speaking in sounds, for example, s-a-t, s-ea-t, s-w-ee-t-ie-s. Please practise this skill when talking with your child to support them to hear and identify sounds
Next week: We will continue to learn new sounds and hearing these sounds in words.
Maths
In maths this week we have introduced the number 2 by, “another one”. We had so much fun getting objects and pairing up with a partner to make 2! Following this we used red and orange cubes to REPRESENT our Numberblocks.

RE
In RE this week we listened to the story, ‘Guess how much I love you..’ after which, the children drew all of the people who love them and discussed the ways in which we can show our love for each other. We then thought about God, and how He loves each one of us. The children are enjoying learning the song and sign language for, “There is Someone who knows me”. Hopefully soon they will be able to share this with you at home!

Carrots!!! Our first sucessfull carrots in 13 years! We have harvested our crops up at the allotment and our little insect friends didn’t eat the carrots!

Reading
Most of the class are really getting into their reading stride. I am delighted to see children carefully selecting books that are challenging yet accessible- this is a very important and mature skill. Children are experiencing increased reading success and their is a buzz in the room at reading time! Well done everyone. KEEP READING EVERY NIGHT- we need to improve our daily reading times now!

Purple Mash
I am sure the children have already told you about our new computing platform- Purple Mash. The children have all been to a purple mash club at lunchtime run by Year 6. Today we completed our first task in class- writing about our history topic “Ancient Greece”. I have set two "2do” tasks for the children:
Task one: Game - Testing your 3 and 6 times tables facts
Task two: As requested A Slide Show. Creating a slide show all about your passion! Mrs Hotchkiss would have to create one all about sewing or Manchester Utd!
I have set up the tasks and the folders into which the work needs saving!
