This week we have been exploring our feelings and how they can affect how we may sometimes behave. The children love this story and it really helps them to self regulate.

Football teams 2019

Mr Nay and I have been overwhelmed by the amount of enthusiastic footballers. Here are the teams and game fixtures for the first half of the season. As you will see we have created 3 teams. This means that all of our children are able to represent Our Lady’s during this years football season!

Time has rushed by in year 4 this week - already the end of week 3 in a new school year. We are settling in well and have become used to our class routines. Swimming is going really well - children have been brilliant listeners and the rate of improvement is super. They do like a little sing-song on a coach, which was also noticed on our trip to Parkview!

First, children explored the garden next to the cafe and Julie and Rachel, our guides were brilliant! They showed us all the vegetables they were growing - including a very unusual trombosini from Italy! The children wanted to weight-lift these - they were massive. We learned lots about how different seeds disperse in a variety of ways - using real life examples which we collected and brought back to school. There were so many questions from these curious learners that we didn’t get a lot of time to play afterwards. However, children did get to munch on fresh hazelnuts if they wished!

We have been digging deeper into our study of the Bible in RE. This week, we learned how to find bible references and we started to study the Old testament. We learned that God revealed what He was like to Abraham and chose him to be ‘father of all nations.’ In maths, we have been learning to round numbers to the nearest ten and hundred - solving some challenges that require us to think in lots of different ways.

Today we drew conclusions from our many experiments! We discovered that seeds need warmth, water and air in order to germinate, but not light. We also discovered that a plant needs leaves in order to grow healthily and that the stem of a plant has little tubes which suck up water to the flower. We are becoming little plant experts!

This week, Elise, Faye and Kaya all received a Bobby Bee certificate. You join in, listen attentively and as a result, you produce some astounding work. Well done!

Our swimming stars were James, Eli, Lily A and Megan. Well done!

Reading!

Please do lots of reading over the weekend and read for 20 minutes each night - lets see how many children can meet their reading target this half term! Well done to Elise who has already met it!

Seed dispersal.

We have learned lots about seeds and how they disperse this week. Go on a walk around your garden or a park. Have a close look at the seeds in the plants. How do you think they disperse? Draw them in your homework book and see if you can write a little explanation of how you think they do it.

Our main categories were:

Wind: some seeds have parachutes, helicopters or shakers

Animal: Some get eaten, some get buried and some hitchhike on an animal’s fur!

Gravity - some are heavy and roll whilst others catapult out.

You could use some of our lovely language of explanation eg, in order to, as a result, consequently, since, because, this means that, this enables…..

I have sent home a sheet for the children to have a go at practising their handwriting as well as going over some of Year 1 spellings from last year. These spellings will not be quizzed on next week. New Year 2 spellings will be given out next week.

Home Learning 20.9.19

This week the children have been asked to practise their number formation. Let’s make sure all of those numbers are the right way around! The children have also been challenged to describe Mole (from our class story) using as many adjectives as they can. If you could stick these two sheets into their home learning books, it would be greatly appreciated.

Please continue to practise the speed sounds with the children. If the children could practise their sounds every time before they read, that would be AMAZING!

We have had such a busy week together as a whole class. This week the children have enjoyed trying new foods at lunch time. The dinner ladies have been very impressed with how well the children are eating their lunches. They have already noticed an improvement in the amount of food on the floor, well done Reception! We have also had our first art and music lessons with Mrs Curtis and Mrs Mallinson. I know that Mrs Curtis was blown away with the children’s concentration when drawing their family portraits. Please have a look at Mrs Curtis’s art page on our school website. There are many pictures of the children’s wonderful artwork from the week.

Certificates:

Concentrating Chloe for... really using your concentration skills during all of this weeks activities. Miss Neves, Mrs Curtis and I have been wowed with your detailed drawings. These certainly show off your super concentration skills. A huge well done for your first week in school Chloe, we are so impressed!

Exthusiastic Hudson for... being so smiley and happy each and everyday. You are a ray of sunshine in our classroom! Well done Hudson, you have had such a brilliant first week in Reception. You have made so many wonderful friends because you share, play and look after others so beautifully.

Our Phonic sounds this week are:

Set 1 sounds: m, a, s and t. The ‘m’ and ‘s’ sounds are stretchy sounds, “mmmm” “sssss”. The ‘a’ and ‘t’ sound are “a-a-a” and “t-t-t” Please practise forming these at home by using the sound cards provided.

Can you hear the sound in different words? Do you hear the sound at the start, middle or end of the word.

Next week: We will continue to learn new sounds and we will begin lots of ‘Fred Talk’. This means that we be speaking words in sounds, such as, “what word can you hear? C-a-t…” “cat”

Physical skill of the week:

Travelling in a space, avoiding obstacles.

We have been learning how to travel safely in our hall space. We have explored travelling in these ways; gentle jogging, side stepping and galloping.

Reminders:

Our PE days are TUESDAY and THURSDAY each week.

We ask that on both of these days children have access to shorts and any jewellery is removed before coming to school. Just a gentle reminder to label ALL uniform as it does become extremely difficult to trace uniform that is unnamed.

Show and Tell:

It was so special to see all of the children’s precious family items this week. All of the children spoke so proudly and confidently when sharing their show and tell with their class friends.

Reading

Please read every night. I have sat with every pupil this week and showed them their current reading data. We have set some personal targets too. I will be able to share all this with you too during Parents Day in October.

I have also sent home another Greek Legend “ The Giant Wooden Horse”. We see the return of Odysseus- this is a story set during the Trojan wars before he set off on his odyssey!

English

Once you have read the story of the wooden horse write a paragraph in your homework book SUMMARIZING - I have modeled this skill in class and we have already had a go independently to! Take care, make sure you sequence the main events so your summary is clear.

Maths

We have explored Roman Numerals to 1000- it is tricky! We learnt the mnemonic:

We have also worked on IXL unit A6. It would be wonderful if you can achieve 100 percent on A6- be resilient!

In class council today we decided that it was important for parents to sign our homework book each week. We agreed that when we have completed a task- but there is no written evidence- the children will write the task (few words) and the parent will sign. This makes it easier to see who may need support.
