Food Technology- Bolognaise

I cannot believe how quick this term has flown, let alone the year! We have had a wonderful time in Year 5 this term discovering the ins and outs of Bolognaise sauce! We kick started the unit by learning about where our meat comes from and how it journeys from farm to fork. We had a tasting session to see if they could identify ingredients within a branded sauce and whether they could distinguish between a high end and value sauce. Looking at a basic bolognaise recipe, the children collaboratively adapted the recipe to their choice, swapping one ingredient and adding three more. The children worked wonderfully together, taking each other’s opinions into consideration before deciding on the final ingredients. They continued to worked superbly when cooking day came, they all chipped in to make a delicious sauce. The aroma around the school was amazing! I do hope they enjoyed the fruits of their labour. A huge thank you Mrs Tierney for assisting on the day.

It has been such a joy and a pleasure to teach Art and DT with your children this year. They have been so enthusiastic with their learning and have turned their hand to a myriad of skills and techniques this year. I look forward to teaching them new skills next year where they will continue on their creative journey. Thank you for your continued support.

Food Technology – Come Dine with Me- Forest School Style!

 I cannot believe how quick this term has flown, let alone the year! We had a wonderful time this half term designing a collaborative three course meal to prepare and cook on the campfire. The children used all their previous learning to create a healthy, balances meal for their peers. As a half class group, they all worked superbly together supporting not only with their dish, but to help with the other dishes as well.  This was very much a first here at Our Lady’s and what a huge success it was! I cannot thank the children enough for their enthusiasm and maturity throughout the process.

A huge thank you goes to Miss Lavelle for assisting and coordinating the campfire cooking! It has been such a joy and a pleasure to teach Art and DT with your children this year. They have been so enthusiastic with their learning and have turned their hand to a myriad of skills and techniques this year. Thank you so much for your support. Year 6 are an amazing group of children. I with them all the very best as they embark on their next creative journey.

Flute Lesson Continuation

Now that you have seen your children take part in their flute concert, there is an opportunity for the children to continue the lessons into Year 5. This will take the form of small music group tuition for 30 minutes weekly. Once we have numbers, we will be able to confirm the logisitcs and groupings. Please complete the form by Wednesday if you would like your child to continue; then we can organise with the Music Service. Thank you.

Year 5 Weekly Blog 11.07.25- ‘Do something this week that your future self will thank you for’

And just like that, we have finished our penultimate week of Year 5! Our week has been dominated by rehearsals for the end of year play. The children have been pulled out of class daily to be rushed into the hall to practice their scenes and they gave done this full of enthusiasm and focus. In between all of this, learning has continued with lots of independent work in our English and RE final units. In English, the children have finished their final drafts of their Highwayman poem and have begun their final piece in their books. In RE, the children have continued their research into other faiths around the world with us looking into all of the big five religions of the world.

The children rolled up their sleeves on Monday as it to time for masterchef. On the menu was spaghetti bolognese with the children working on the clock to finish their creative dishes. I hope you all had the chance to have a taste of all of their hardwork.

• Learner of the Week- This week our award goes to Rose for being a focused and brave learner. It has been such a disruptive with all of our play practices and yet when we have come back into the classroom for our key pieces of learning, you have been so focused as usual. I feel like I have seen a different side to you since we have started our play practices and you have really shone on stage- I can’t wait to see this in full during our performances next week.

• Virtue Star of the Week- Our virtues for this half term are love and compassion and our winner this week goes to Jacob. I have sensed a real growth in you Jacob as we have come to the end of Year 5. You have shown qualities that show that you are ready for Year 6. You have been so considerate towards your staff members and have been always on hand to help- this has not gone unnoticed.

Year 4 Weekly blog Friday 11th July "Nature is the source of all true knowledge." (Leonardo Da Vinci)

What a beautiful penultimate week it has been in Year 4! The highlight of this week was our rivers study at Cuerden Valley Park. What an experience they had! Children blew the staff away with their excellent and extensive river knowledge. The children watched the flow of a river on the outside and inside of a meander by racing ducks! They used nets to see what invertebrates they could find and the staff helped them identify them. They panned for crystals and measured the River Lostock’s width and depth demonstrating excellent teamwork skills. Please do watch the video below of their special fieldwork adventure!

This week, in English, children have been learning the poem ‘Macavity,’ by T.S Elliot. They have again worked in teams to learn a verse and teach it to another group, explaining what it means. They have then performed their verses, planning this carefully themselves.

Children did an excellent job on their biscuits this week - I had to stop myself from sampling them all! I especially liked the box designs they made.

In French this week, we learned about French shops and what products they sell. Next week, we will turn our classroom into a French cafe and serve each other some yummy french food!

Our learning certificate this week is another double whammy. A Roger Robin/Sadie Spider certificate goes to Martha for really ensuring you take your learning into your own hands and use learning behaviours such as focus and resilience to grasp the difficult concept of time. You are always encouraging others, which was so apparent on our school trip.

Our virtues for this half term are Compassionate and Loving. This week we have noticed Rosa - you are so helpful Rosa and put in the effort to make classroom life run smoothly. Thank you.

This week...

Welcome to our penultimate blog…we are all feeling a little sad, but we will still be able to see each other in September.

Another busy week of learning…yes, working hard right up until the end! Everyone has completed their learning challenges (we love an opportunity to grow our brains!) so next week we can have week full of plays, parties and FUN, FUN, FUN! We can’t wait!

Worship

During prayer and liturgy this week we have been discussing the word ‘neighbour’ . This Sunday’s Gospel tells us that loving God and our neighbour is the foundation of a good life. Through the parable of the Good Samaritan Jesus showed us how to be truly human and so change the world through love and service, that our neighbour is any person that needs our help regardless of who they are or where they come from. We have been trying really hard to be like the Good Samaritan.by being caring, generous, kind and compassionate. Click here to watch a short video.

Hello everyone.

I hope your all enjoying this lovely warm weather.

 I can not believe that this nursery year is coming to an end next week. They do say time flies when your have so much fun, and it's so true. I will miss all the children moving up to reception, but we have made so many fabulous memories. Thank you nursery friends.

 This week we have continued growing our brains with our leaning challenges. We have been matching 4 buttons by either their colour, size or shape, playing a rhyming game to find two objects that rhyme out of our rhyming bag, a shape challenge and tangram puzzles! The list goes on! The children have really loved working out where the shapes fit. They have all become Cooper Crabs with their connection.

We have also been working out numbers that add up to 10. The children worked out that 8 and 2, 9 and 1, 7 and 3, all make 10. Good brain growing everyone.

Year 6 Weekly Blog 'It's the Final Countdown!'

Not long now until ‘PETER PAN’- we can’t wait for you to see it …

It has been another busy week next week, with the play. Most of you have ordered and received your tickets now. The show starts at 6:00pm and will be approximately 2 hours long. The children need to arrive at school at 5:30pm, to get changed in to their costumes. They all look fabulous in their outfits, thank you so much for making such effort. Here is a sneaky peak at rehearsals …

On the last day (Friday) we thought it would be lovely if the Year 6 got a warm and loving send off from the rest of the school. The children in year 6 will be sent out at the later time of 2:10pm, to give the whole school an opportunity to say their goodbyes and to take any pictures that you may want to take of their final day at Primary School.

We are all looking forward to the leaver’s day out next THURSDAY! It is imperative that all children MUST have a bag with them, containing plenty of fluids, a snack, hat and sun-cream/ waterproof coat dependent on the weather. We will be out ALL day, come rain or shine, so haven’t the right things is so vital! They are able to wear their own clothes on this day, leavers hoodies might be nice for pictures? Sensible shoes for walking must also be worn, as we are doing ALOT of walking! The PTFA are kindly paying for the cost of the golf and a very special thank you goes to Mr Hughes for providing the fish and chips, we really appreciate it!

Reports have come home today with the children, I hope you enjoy reading and reflecting on them, they have so much to celebrate from their time at Our Lady’s but like everyone, always something to take away and learn from. The most important part of your child’s report, is the one written by us, as their teacher. We celebrate the WHOLE child, not just their performance on one day, so please let this be your focus and not the SAT’s results. SAT’s results are in the pack, so please have a good look at them along with the explanation- the standardized score on reaching expected for all papers was 100 and for Greater Depth is 110. Remember, results from a test never define you as a person, just look at what they have all achieved this year- there is so much to celebrate and be proud of!

Your day will be as follows (approximately):

 09:45am to 10:00am       Arrival at Cuerden Valley Park, Berkeley Drive, off Shady Lane

10:15am to 12:15pm       River Work

12:15pm to 12:45pm      Lunch

12:45pm to 14:15pm      River Work

14:15pm to 14:30pm      Return to Cuerden Valley Park and departure

You will be outdoors in natural environments where the ground may be muddy, wet and uneven.  Please ensure children dress appropriately for the outdoors and bring suitable footwear. (I advise tracksuit bottoms, top and trainers.)

Everyone needs to bring wellies for the river work, to dress for the outdoors, as we do go out even in the rain.

Please also have in your bag a dry change of footwear and clothing (at very least to bring 2 pairs of socks each)

  Toilets are available in the Orchard Barn and you will have access to a room, where you will be able to eat your lunch and store bags whilst we are out in the park. 

Remember to try to pack a zero waste packed lunch and be at school for 8:30am Tuesday morning.

Year 5 Weekly Blog 04.07.25- 'With transition, we have two options. To step forward into growth or to step back into safety'

What a week it has been! We have entered the final month on our schooling calendar with us only weeks away from the finishing line! With this time of year, comes lots of exciting days out with this week being our transition week at Our Lady’s. Wednesday saw us off to St Bedes for our high school transition day, along with five other schools in our Catholic cluster. The theme for the day was Science and Technology, with us being split into small groups and going off carrying out experiments and cooking challenges! The children’s behaviour, attitude and representation of the school was impeccable. I could not be prouder of Year 5. As Mr Marsden (St Bede’s Headteacher) said, ‘I can always spot an Our Lady’s child when they come to my school based on the way they conduct themselves’. Mrs Gregan came with us and was on point as chief photographer.

The following day was also transition themed with this being Our Lady’s move up day, with Year 5 moving up to Year 6 for the morning. Mrs Harrison could not speak highly enough of the children, carrying the same qualities from the previous day.

We have continued to develop our cricketing skills in PE this week by focusing on our batting technique.

End of Year Play- Costumes

Details are listed below in regards to tickets and dates of the performances. Our class have been split into mermaids and indians (your child will know which one they are playing for the play). These costumes need to be brought into school ASAP in a plastic bag with your name on the bag.

Mermaids/Mermen- Swimming costume (girls) and a vest or plain t-shirt for the boys. If possible, choose colours that are bright to fit the theme of the scene so blues and greens would be good if possible.

Indians- pair of brown, grey or black shorts. The rest of these costumes have been provided.

• Let’s Celebrate

  • Learner of the Week- This week our award goes to Matilda for being a focused and cooperative learner. Even with our learning being disrupted with play practice and trying to work in intense heat in our classroom, your commitment, enthusiasm and kindness never drops below your incredible standards. This just shows that you are ready to lead our school as a role model and the responsibilities of a Year 6 pupil.

  • Virtue Star of the Week- Our virtues for this half term are love and compassion and our winner this week goes to John-Paul. Transition week is always a fun and exciting week with lots of new opportunities but it is also important in making good impressions. You do this every single day Johnny so I had absolutely no worries about you in your transition days this week- an excellent role model.

• Mini Vinnie Raffle- Our Mini Vinnie team are hosting a raffle which takes place this Monday 7th July. It is 50p per ticket or £2 for a strip. Hello everyone and welcome to this week's blog.

The weather has been glorious this week and we have been blessed with our produce in the garden. We have peas aplenty. They are so sweet and juicy and so easy to just pick and eat. We have noticed the pumpkin plants are really growing, we can’t wait to see the pumpkins when they start to grow. It is so wonderful to see how enthusiastic the children are observing how all our fruits and veggies are growing. Why not have a go at home.

We are happy to announce that all 5 of our butterflies have emerged from their cocoons. We fed them some sugary water and picked some flowers from our meadow, to give them some energy We then let them fly free. Keep a look out for butterflies when you are out and about, you never know you might see our butterflies.

Hello everyone,

It's been very hot this week but it hasn't stopped us from growing our brains.

 We have some very exciting news, as our super pupa’s (cocoons) have metamorphosised and we have 5 beautiful Painted Lady butterflies. The children were so excited.

We have been working on our fine motor skills this week. The children have had lots of challenges, we have been cutting helping dinosaurs escape from tangled up wool, matching and moving colour balls to the matching cups using only a spoon, pick up shells using tweezers and then moving them to a pot, counting and ordering people into the right correct numbered cars, and lots more. All of these activities will continue to help the children to stretch their hand muscles, use their brains to problem solve and develop perseverance to get the job done!

Leavers Party

As is our tradition we will be having a Leavers Party. Each year we like to celebrate our children and their numerous achievements. This year will be a beach party… hopefully in the nursery garden (weather permitting) with lots of water!!! Please come wearing shorts and t-shirts. ready for some summer fun. Everyone is invited to join us on Wednesday 16th July from 9.30 -11.30 am (unless it is your usual session, nursery will be open as usual at 8.45am).

Mini Vinnies Raffle!

On Monday7th July our wonderful Minnie Vinnies will be holding a raffle in support of the RSPCA. Tickets will cost 50p per ticket or £2 for 5 tickets. Prizes donated will include toys, books, chocolate and sweets! Tickets will be on sale outside after school on Monday, please give them you support.

Year 4 Weekly blog Friday 4th July "Do not aspire to have more, aspire to be more." (Oscar Romero)

It has been a lovely, hope-filled week in Year 4. On Tuesday we went to St Bedes to experience a prayer day, with the theme, ‘Share your Light.’ Children really were beacons of light in the respectful way they conducted themselves, in their beautiful singing (I could listen to it all day!) and in their kindness towards all. They learned all about the saint, Oscar Romero and made a cross representing themselves, they made prayer beads which they used in the school chapel and made a stained glass window with a message about spreading light upon it. They had a good mix with children from other feeder schools of the same age.

This week, children had their move up morning to their new class. Mr Cornwell is delighted to be teaching them next year -and I will be incredibly sad to see them go but also immensely proud of them for all they have achieved this year.

In class, children invented their own character from the Viking cosmos and thought of a magical object that they might own, lose or steal. This will help them with their upcoming Viking myth stories.

In maths, we have built on our understanding of time with 12 and 24 hour clock using digital time. Children may need a little rehearsal of time at home so I have popped it on the homework

We have started our Geography topic all about Rivers this week. Children loved finding out all about the features of a river and how it changes as is flows downhill. We will be learning more next week prior to our River study trip. Please read the detailed information below about what children will need on the day.

In English, children have been inventing their own Viking myth. Look at our beautiful creation of the Viking cosmos below!

Pledge day - Today, we have been reflecting as a school about how to bring hope to a sometimes dark world. Individually, as a class and as a school, children have thought about how they can make a difference in the world - how they can spread positivity, hope and the message of Jesus to others.

Sunday 6th July Holy Communion family mass and breakfast in parish centre. You can bring your children into church as normal for 9:15am in their Holy Communion clothes and Mrs Gregan will lead them into the presbytery where I will be waiting for them.

Monday 9th July -Mini Vinnies: Our Mini Vinnies are really eager to raise money for RSPCA. They have decided that they (the Mini Vinnie children) will gather their good condition/new toys, books as well as chocolate bars and sweets to raise money for this cause. On Monday during pick up time they will set up a table, on the artificial grass by the trim trial, where they will be selling raffle tickets to win the prices they have donated. 50p per ticket and all proceeds will go to the charity RSPCA. The prices will be drawn the following week. If you would like to support this fundraiser please bring some change with you during pick up time on Monday 3:25, 50p a ticket of £2 a strip. Thank you!

Tuesday 8th July Please arrive at school for 8:30.Rivers trip to Cuerdale Valley Park. This trip is now payable on parentpay £20. Children will be getting in the river and will need Wellies, outdoor clothing, sunhat and also a complete change of clothing including extra socks.

The trip leaders at Cuerden Valley are encouraging ZERO WASTE and have asked us to try and bring a lunch which has minimal waste.

Some ideas for how to achieve this:

·         Bring lunches in rucksack or other reusable bag instead of plastic or paper bags (bags will be safely left in our classroom whilst we are out on the park).

·         Bring drinks in re-usable drinks containers, rather than throw away bottles.

·         Put sandwiches/biscuits/cakes etc in re-usable sandwich boxes, not wrapped in cling film or foil.

·         Do not pack too much unnecessary food (we have noticed a lot of completely untouched food goes in the bin).

Schools will receive a certificate if they manage to achieve this.

Year 6 Weekly Blog ‘If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change’.

As part of the Jubilee year of hope this year, today, as a school, we have all been asked to write a Jubilee pledge as a class and share this in whole class liturgy this afternoon. Children today have learnt that a pledge is a long-term commitment and promise that will enable us to live out Catholic Social Teaching, to stand in solidarity with communities experiencing poverty, advancing justice and harmony locally, nationally, and globally.  

Pope Francis leaves a legacy of love, justice, and compassion. As Pilgrims of Hope we have made a Pledge, a long-term commitment to build a better world, just as Pope Francis asked us. Year 6 have thought about all the ways we can be signs of hope both now and in years to come. We pledge to care for creation, walk alongside people experiencing poverty, build peace, and believe in the power we have as children and young people to change the world. One way the children have pledged to do this is as they begin their educational journey at high school: ‘We promise to stay true to ourselves in all we do, say, and achieve. We will carry forward the mission of Our Lady’s School, remembering that we are all precious in God's eyes. We will share this message with our new friends and teachers.’

What a busy week we have had in Year 6. We’ve managed to keep all of our learning going whilst finally nearly finishing our play! Next week we will be running all the way through, making small changes and improving what we have done- maybe even adding a dance in! There are still some children not fully familiar with their lines, please spend time this weekend going over their parts, making sure they know all their lines off by heart with the right expression. They have had their scripts for 6 weeks now and there is only one week to go! Don’t forget tickets are on sale, so please make sure you purchase to avoid disappointment.

I am very sorry I have not given you a lot of time for costumes, but if possible, could these start to come in to school next week- we will be having a run through in costumes on Friday next week, but may try on before this day.

This week we have continued our learning in RE, English and History. Our transition learning continues and on top of this transition preparation, all children have now been for a visit to their new high school and all have come back positive, looking forward to their new chapter, with of course some nerves. We have spoken in class about these feelings and how we need to share them with the people around us. We will of course, be discussing this in more detail over the next two weeks…

On Tuesday, we had a very special visit from Kerry, who taught us all about the History of Blackpool. It was fascinating to look at photraphs and video clips taken in the Victorian era, when Blackpool became extremely popular and how it has grown in to one of the most iconic entertainment towns! We even got to do out very own buisness pitch to the rest of the class, thinking about what type of attraction we could build to draw the crowds- some were very adventurous!

Leavers Day

As we approach the final two weeks of the school year, the celebration of our Year 6 children is at the forefront of our minds. Over the past 7 years, the children have grown into young people who are ready to fly. Young people who know how to be the change that they want to see in the world. They could not have achieved this without the love and support that they received from their school community, and more importantly, their family. For this we thank you.

On Wednesday 16th July, the whole school community will come together at the Leavers Mass to celebrate the class and their journey through primary school. This will take place at 9.30am in church.

The following day, we will be going out for the day for part two of the celebrations! They will be walking down, along the beach, to Fairhaven Adventure Golf and Adventure Playground, where we will stay and have lunch and games for the afternoon. We will then head back to school for the end of the day.

Details and payments for this day out will be given out to you next week and we will finalise arrangements-what your children needs to wear and bring with them on the day.

Well done to Niamh

Niamh, you are such a calming influence on our class. You get on with your work independently, quietly and calmly. Thank you Niamh for being a great role model within the classroom, going above and beyond to help and always doing what is asked of you. You are such a cooperative learner and radiate kindness when working with others both in the classroom and on the stage. Wow, I love watching you perform, where you bring your character to life with such energy and enthusiasm!

Love and Compassionate Stars

This half term we will be on the lookout for all the children that stop and notice how others are experiencing their lives, and how they feel, and why they say and believe what they do.  Ultimately, it is what makes us kind and, at a deeper level, opens up the possibility of being loving through our just and merciful actions and forgiving words. This week we thank Millie for always being compassionate and loving with others.

Mini Vinnies

Our Mini Vinnies are really eager to raise money for RSPCA. They have decided that they (the Mini Vinnie children) will gather their good condition/new toys, books as well as chocolate bars and sweets to raise money for this cause. On Monday during pick up time they will set up a table, on the artificial grass by the trim trial, where they will be selling raffle tickets to win the prices they have donated. 50p per ticket and all proceeds will go to the charity RSPCA. The prices will be drawn the following week. If you would like to support this fundraiser please bring some change with you during pick up time on Monday 3:25, 50p a ticket of £2 a strip. Thank you!
