This weeks Gospel we heard about the time Peter, James and John went with Jesus to pray and while they were there, Jesus was transformed. We have also shared a special moment with our Year 5 friends as we focused our thoughts towards Lent. The children gave one another their Lent boxes, it was such a wonderful moment with such sweet conversations of thankfulness and excitement as they spoke to one another about how they made their boxes and why.

Magic moments

Today has been full of so much joy! The children were brimming with excitement to share their books with you all and for you to see their progress this year. It was lovely to see their wide smiles as they returned, knowing that they have made you all so proud because of how hard they have been working in school. Following this we had a brilliant morning out in our forest school. A huge thank you to Mrs Tierney who allowed the children to have the most fun exploring the outdoors!

Let’s Celebrate

A huge well done to Florence who has been awarded our concentration certificate this week. Florence, you are just a joy! Your desire and love to learn is so special! This week we invited a whole host of visitors into our class, you listened so intently, which meant you learnt many new facts. When you were picked to share your thoughts your excitement brought a huge smile to my face. Not only were you excited to share your knowledge, you also spoke articulately and confidently! We are so proud of you!

A huge well done to Hope who has received the Star Virtue award this week. Hope you are always so intentional with your words, you use kindness towards others and are always quick to think about those in need and to say a prayer to help them. Your actions too are intentional! You care so much about God’s world and are desperate to make it a farier face. I can picture your smile as you came in with some food for our food bank!

Reminders

World book day: This Thursday. We would love for the children to come to school dressed as their reader identity. For example, I love stories that are mysterious and romantic, I could come as a detective or something including hearts. Your child may want to come as their favourite character that they love to read about, or wearing lots of facts they have read from non-fiction books, or something relating to the magazines they love to read (football, disney etc) it really is up to you!

Day of prayer and love: This Friday please come to school wearing clothes that you LOVE to wear. During this day it will be full of prayer and love. Please read Mrs Gregan’s blog to find out more.

Don’t forget if you would like your child to make ‘people we love’ planter (On Friday prayer day) to celebrate the world day of prayer, then please make a payment on parentpay ASAP.

Year 5 Weekly Blog 27.02.26- 'This is my son, whom I love. When I am with him, I am well pleased. Listen to him'- Matthew 17:1-9

What a first week back after half term it has been! The weather has started to change with brighter and drier mornings and warmer afternoons, which has certainly lifted everyone’s spirits. We have also begun our spiritual journey of Lent, with us focusing on the Mass of Ash Wednesday in our RE lessons. We asked and answered lots of inquisitive questions about Lent and also looked into the readings and scripture from Ash Wednesday. We have also swapped our Lenten boxes over with our lovely Year 1 partners, ready for the weekend to begin earning those pennies at home to raise money for CAFOD.

It was so lovely to see so many of you at our second book look of the year and for the children to share their work across the year with you. You should be extremely proud of the work that they put in and produced, also to see the progression of their work from September. Lots of learning has taken place already in this new half term with us using our multiplication/division knowledge to convert units of measurement and to multiply decimals by whole numbers. In English, we have began our new writing topic of Sci-Fi, which will go hand in hand with our space topic in Science. Here are some pictures captured throughout the week of our learning.

Conversation starters

Science- ‘My Very Educated Mother Just Served Us Noodles’. Can you explain to your parents why this was the topic of our conversation in this weeks science lesson. Could you remember any of the facts we associated with each planet (one word descriptions).

This week...

Worship

This week in Worship we have started our ‘Desert to Garden’ topic. Our key words this week were LENT, SORRY and ASHES.

Our first session began with a story about a tree and the changing seasons. We looked at the trees outside and whether they had any leaves on them yet. We also went on a spring walk and discovered all the things that are changing.

Just like trees change through the seasons to grow and get ready for new leaves, the season of Lent helps us change and get ready for new beginnings with Jesus at Easter.

Our child led worship on Thursday was about Ash Wednesday. In our worship bag we had a picture of some ashes and we thought about what they could be. Some of us thought they looked like smoke and some of us remembered going to church and having ashes on our head. Here is a video we watched: Click here.

The ashes were holy ashes and they are God’s blessings. The ashes marked the start of Lent. We spoke about Lent being a time to say sorry and think about how we can be kind to each other in Lent. We made our Lenten promise – we listed all the ways we are going to be good in Lent around our big heart – kindness, loving, sharing, forgiving. If we do these things we will get a smiley stamp in our heart. Lets see if we can fill it by Easter! We’ve already got a lot!

We have also been focusing on Jesus’ cross. We have recreated different versions out of resources we have in nursery…and even our bodies! Take a look at our pictures!

On Monday and Tuesday the children visited Forest school to look for signs of new life, we spotted the trees budding, Spring flowers (crocus, snowdrops, daffodils).

On Wednesday we swapped our Lenten boxes with year three. All we have to do now are multiple acts of kindness for donations! Last year the school raised £1000…no pressure!

Learning Landscape

Such wonderful week. Everyone has returned to nursery full of life and raring to go!

In our learning landscape this week we have been:

• Painting Nigerian art in readiness for the World Day of Prayer next Friday.

• Planned that we will be walking once around the field in the morning and the afternoon to collect miles for Cafod’s Big Lent Walk. Between the whole school we would like to walk 4,200 miles! Look our for the sponsor form which was sent home this week.

• Played guess my number, a game show where you don't count, you see the amount! Join the Numberblocks and learn how to recognise numbers of things without counting them. Have a try at home, maybe using different objects click here

• Played the ribbon box game where we had to predict if the ribbons thatw ere pulled from the box were ‘long’ or short’, that was great fun!!

• Played Silly Soup (a rhyming game), matched the rhyming objects from a sack and even rhymed our names to make nonsense names. We are getting good at rhyming…have a play at home, its fun!

• Practised our numbers to eight and the sounds we have learnt so far. Keep a look out for the QR codes coming home so that you can practise at home too!

• Used the ten frame for the first time. We found out that 4 and 4 added together makes 8, as well as 6 add 2, 5 add 3 and 8 ones’!

As always a busy week. We have been so busy we haven’t managed to do everything that we planned. Have a rest this weekend next week will be even busier!

Maths

We have been using our knowledge of multiplying and dividing by 10, 100 and 1000 (shifting digits left and right pass the decimal point) to convert differents units of measure such as cm, m , kg, g , l and ml. Complete the sheet that is stuck in your homework books.

Reading targets have been set for the new half term so lets get quizzing so we can smash our targets. 20 minutes minimum a day.

Spellings- suffix ‘tion’

Our spellings have looked at verbs that end in e but when we add our suffix ‘tion’, we have to drop the e when the word becomes a noun.

Practice writing these words three times on the line in your BEST handwriting. Make sure to complete lots of mini spelling tests in preparation for our weekly test on Friday.

Year 4 Weekly blog. Friday 27th February "The invitation at the transfiguration is to listen to Jesus and to follow Him." (Pope Francis)

The Lenten season has begun in Year 4. The children began their Lenten journey by making Lenten promises - one for fasting, one for almsgiving and one to become a better person. They also swapped their Lenten boxes with their Year 2 partner. They are willing to do chores at home - and you can give them a little money for their box. All proceeds are going to CAFOD. We have spent some time in our RE lessons reflecting on how we can love like Jesus did. This is the perfect opportunity to care for others and show solidarity with all our brothers and sisters - just like Jesus did. We had a beautiful worship led by Jack, Heidi and Edward this week. It was beautiful - all about the Prodigal Son and how family is more important than money. Children inspired the class to make bidding prayers about forgiveness and true wealth. In HRSE this week, we talked about having an ‘Attitude of Gratitude,’and refelcted on how we could do a daily gratitude practice at home.

We have started our new class novel - The Last Bear, by Hannah Gold. It is a beautiful book and the depth of conversation around it so far has been amazing!

Let’s Celebrate

Our certificate this week is an enthusiastic and focused learner This goes to Ruth. You give your all in lessons and your work is stunning - you always answer fully and try your very hardest. It is lovely that you listen to every word in class and are so attentive.

Our virtues this half term are being intentional and prophetic. Intentional in their behavour for learning and their behaviour towards others. This week, Halle receives our star for being so keen to do the right thing, being ready to learn, making mature decisions and being a role model to others.

We are now having a ‘100% focused learner of the day’ in Year 4. This week we have chosen: Halle, Henry O, Marla

Holy Communion.

This Sunday at 9:30pm it is the welcome mass for all Holy Communicants. Please attend with your children.

Sessions for parents and children start this Tuesday at 3:30-4:20. Please encourage your child to complete their ‘Making things right’ pages each week in their new book which they will get on Tuesday.

Ties - These are red ties with Holy Communion symbols on them that many boys choose to wear for their Holy Communion. They are on parent pay if you wish to purchase one.

WORLD BOOK DAY This Thursday 5th March. Please come dressed as your favourite book character and please bring in ONE book or magazine that you absolutely love to share with your friends.

D&T Biscuits: Children have a recipe to make biscuits. This will be happening on Thursday 12th March and they will need to bring their ingredients in.

Speaking Shakespeare

On Wednesday the 19th March Children will be ‘Speaking Shakespeare’ at the Grand theatre. We have been given a speech from Hamlet, which we will learn and perform together as a class.

OPPORTUNITY - PRE SHOW HAMLET PERFORMANCE Tuesday 24th March - 6pm

There is opportunity for a small group of children to perform a little Shakespeare in the foyer, as a Pre-show performance at the Grand to entertain the theatre goers as they come to watch. This will be before the RSC production of Hamlet in the evening.

Parents would need to bring their children for 6:00pm and either collect them at 7:15pm and take them home OR book to go and watch the RSC performance of Hamlet and take them to the show.

(However, it has been given a recommended age of 12+ - so this would be completely at your own discretion.)

I will be going to watch the show with my own son after this pre-show performance!

Welcome back to the second half of the spring term. There is no doubt that it is going to be a busy term with lots and lots going on. I am really excited that we will end the term with an Easter assembly. It will be a lovely way to bring our class family: parents and children together.

This half term, we are focusing on the virtues of being Intentional and Prophetic. We will be growing by making thoughtful choices rather than acting on impulse; Noticing the needs of others and respond with kindness; speaking truth with love; standing up for justice and fairness and most importantly seeing the world with God’s eyes—imagining what it could be.

Yesterday we had a beautiful teacher’s liturgy in the chapel, where we reflected on a reading from the book of the Prophet Jeremiah 1:4–8. In the reading we heard Jeremiah telling God that he was too young to do what God was asking him to do. He didn’t feel ready or confident. But God told him: “Do not be afraid… I am with you.” This reading showed our two virtues clearly… being Intentional, where  Jeremiah had to make a choice. He could hide, say no, or give up — or he could choose to trust God on purpose. Being Prophetic…Jeremiah became a prophet because he spoke God’s words and helped people come back to what was right. We then reflected on all the ways we could link this to our own lives, especially during this liturgical season of Lent. We talked about how every time we choose the right thing — on purpose — we become more like Jesus.

Thank you to the following children who led us in a beautiful child-led litrugy on Tuesday, on lent and helping us to reflect on the changes we can make this liturgical season …

In RE our lesson this week we reflected on John’s gospel, the ‘annointing at Bethany’, where Martha and Mary annoint Jesus’ feet in preparation for his burial, showing that they recongised Jesus’ true identity, that He is the messiah. The children then connected the learning from last term- how anointing is used in many of our sacraments. We started our lesson smelling some familiar scents, to see if they could recognise them …

Earlier this week we swapped our Lenten boxes with our Reception buddies. We were so impressed with how much time and effort they had all gone to, to make sure their box was perosnalised for their partner. Now it is our mission to fill them for CAFOD as part of our almsgiving this lent…

We were so happy to share our learning journey with you during our book look this week. As you can see, the children have achieved so much and are making such positive progress. Was wonderful to see so many happy faces as you shared their work …

Being an active and curious learner.

I am sure the children have come home to tell you that they have had their arithmetic paper back this week and we have nearly completed the reading. This was such an exciting and worth-while learning journey, where we have been through the paper, celebrated achievements and even mistakes- as the mistakes we make are what we truly learn from the most! I would like to remind all of you that this process is not to label or to level your child, as we have not yet completed the whole curriculum, we simply do this to ensure your children are familiar with the layout, formatting, style of questions and of course to learn what is expected of them. The children have had the chance to think about what areas they know they need to work on now and reflect on what progress they would like to make next time- marginal gains are always the best way! We were so proud of the children’s maturity and resilience during this feedback time. Arithmetic papers will be sent out today, alongside their homework, for you to have a look at and the reading paper will be sent home early next week. Please can we make sure that these papers come back to school, as we keep them in our revision folders so we can refer back to them. Many thanks.

Leading Learners

Intentional and Prophetic stars

Please complete the rounding revision booklet- this was an area that a lot of us made mistakes on in reasoning, so we need a recap and to practise skills.

Please complete the reading comprehnesion, answering the questions in detail and going back to the text for the answers. Remember- try to time yourself, this should take no longer than 20 minutes.

World book day

Don’t forget to come dressed as a book character you love on Thursday. You can come dressed as anything to do with books in fact. If, for example, your favourite books are non-fiction about penguins - you can come dressed as a penguin! If you love Beano comics - come as Beano. You might like football books - dress as a footballer! fairy books, detective books,…. the list is endless!

We would love it if you could bring in one book on World Book Day that YOU ABSOLUTELY LOVE from home. You will get chance to show the class and read it with someone.

It does not have to be a novel - it could be a recipe book, a book for younger children, a graphic novel, a comic, your favourite facts book, a book about your favourite singer, a book about Minecraft - anything goes!

Maths

There are two sheets in your homework book to complete about divisibility rules. We have learned that:

You can tell if a number is divisible by 3 by adding the digits together. If the digit sum is a multiple of 3 the whole number is divisible by 3/is a multiple of 3.

For example 245 is not a multiple of three because 2+4+5 - 11. Eleven is not a multiple of 3.

Whereas 4512 is a mutliple of 3 because 4+5+1+2 = 12 - which is a multiple of 3.

You can tell if the number is divisible by 6/a multiple of six. For starters, it has to be an EVEN number. Then when you add the difgit sum, it totals to a multiple of 3.

For instance, straight away we know 1325 cannot be divisible by six bacuse it is not EVEN.

6588 might be divisible by six because it is even. When you add the digits, 6+5 +8+8 = 27 it must be divisible by 6 because this number is a multiple of 3.

Year 5 Trip to UCLAN- Wednesday 4th March 2026

On Wednesday 4th March, we are heading off to UCLAN in Preston for our new science topic of Space and the Solar System. Our workshop is from 10am-2pm so please arrive at school at the normal time, in our full school uniform (No PE kits). We will be leaving between 2:00-2:20pm so we should be back at school for normal school pick ups. If there are any delays on the motorway coming home, Mrs Nel will update everyone via text message on ETA back at school.
