Year 5 Homework- Due Friday 8th May

Reading

New reading targets have been reset so lets get reading to beat those this half term! Remember, we are also trying to beat our 15 million word target for the whole year- we can do it! Minimum of 20 minutes per day is vital in our reading and writing progression.

Maths- ANTON

To finish last weeks task of ‘Converting Mixed Number Fractions and Improper Fractions’ folder on ANTON. There are 6 tasks to complete in the folder.

English- SPAG

The children will go home with around 10 SPAG questions every week to practice with. We will be going through these questions in class together and peer marking so it is vital that everybody has a go at these before Thursday. These have been stuck in their homework books already.

Spellings

These are the next 10 spellings of the Year 5 and 6 spelling list that we are working towards as we get closer to Year 6. Use a variety of our spelling games to help you practice at home such as square spellings, stair spellings and mock spelling tests.

This week...

Worship

This week we have continued our branch ‘To the Ends of the Earth’. Our key words this week were parish, Holy Spirit and Pentecost.

We began by watching a video all about Pentecost Click here.

The Holy Spirit came to the disciples at Pentecost.  It looked like flames and sounded like the wind. We had a picture of the 12 disciples and 12 flames with numbers on them. We worked hard and put the numbers in the correct order above their heads.

Our child led worship this week focused on the Holy Spirit. We had a picture to look at – the Holy Spirit was represented by a dove. We spoke about how we cannot see the Holy Spirit but we can feel it inside us. We also noticed that we say ‘the Holy Spirit’ when we make the sign of the cross. Our prayer leaders led us beautifully in prayer and we finished by saying the Hail Mary.

Learning landscape

This week we have been busy bees exploring 2D ‘shapes’ We have:

  • talked about each shape and what makes them that shape as well as their names; corners, curved sides, straight sides, short sides and long sides

  • been on a shape hunt

  • sorted shapes and joined them together to make different shapes

  • drawn each shape

  • visited forest school- we love going to forest school

  • met numbers beyond ten…tricky!

  • continued designing our Sports Day t-shirts. They are looking fabulous!

  • played in the garden; going on bug hunts, using the big outdoor water play, making a cafe in the sand, checking on the tadpoles and the snail hotel

  • …and most importantly have had lots of fun in the sun!

Silly Hat and Sock Week!

Don’t forget that Silly Hat and Sock week is coming up, get your hats and socks ready! Let’s make this a fantastic week!

Sports day

EYFS Sports Day is being held on Wednesday 10th June at 9.15 am. Please make sure you child is wearing shorts and a t-shirt, trainers, sun cream and a hat as well as bringing a bottle of water with them. Each child will have their bespoke t-shirt ready to change into when they arrive at nursery.

This event is open to all the children but please can you let us know if your child is unable to attend or you feel they may be unsettled as it is a very busy and loud event.

Finally, I’ve got the BBQ fired up and I am hoping for a relaxing Bank Holiday Weekend! I hope you are too!

Trip to Lancaster Castle- Thursday 14th May

The coach will be leaving from school at 8:45am, so all children need to be in school for 8:30am at the St Patrick’s road gate entrance (next to the school field).

We will be leaving Lancaster at 2pm to drive back to school so we should be back at school for 3:30pm. Any delays due to traffic or breakdown, Mrs Nel will send a text out to notify our ETA.

Children will need to be in full school uniform.

Year 5 Weekly Blog 24.04.26- ' As the Father has sent me, I am sending' John 20-21

What a lovely week it has been, with the sun certainly shining- both temperature and spirits have been raised. Our week began with a lovely trip to St Annes library, after an invitation to take part in a non-fiction project. The children were sent to find a non-fiction book of their interest and to find interesting facts for a wall display at the library. Children also got the chance to take out some books to borrow in order to read at home (12th May deadline for those who have done so).

Our focus this week in RE has been about the ‘Apostolic Mission’, we discussed what our key word ‘apostle’ meant and any connections we had surrounding this word. We then shared how we as Catholics can carry out this mission as we created our own badges in order to display this. Learning has continued to flow across the curriculum, with us moving onto multiplying both improper and mixed number fractions, improving our language to make our discussion texts more formal and to learning about new crimes and punishments taking place across history.

Let’s Celebrate

Virtue Star of the Week: Our virtues for this half term are attentive and discerning. This week our star goes to Lettie. You are so discerning by always offering support and help to your members of staff, even across the school. I have noticed improvements in your attentiveness in class which has brought about more confidence in your academic ability.

Learner of the Week for being a focused and determined learner goes to Myles. Managing distractions is such a difficult thing to overcome, especially when we turn towards the end of the year. You do this so well Myles, even when you are close by to your friends, and this allows you to stay on task and hit those learning targets throughout the lesson. I have seen a big shift in your determination to complete your independent tasks which bodes excellently with your level of focus.

  • Homework- Please check the homework blog for your child’ weekly homework, including the deadline date.

  • Trip to the Grand 7th May- We will be seeing a live performance of ‘The Boy in the Back of the Class’ - a novel in which the children will be reading in Year 6. Payment is now live on parentpay. Children will be leaving school at 1pm and we will be picked up via a coach at 4:30pm. We will be back at school around 5pm. Please make sure your child has provisions for being picked up at this time.

  • Trip to Lancaster Castle and Police Museum 14th May- Our final history topic of the year will be ‘Crime and Punishment’ , in which this trip offers a detailed tour through history. Payment is now live on parentpay.

  • Swimming Gala Friday 22nd May- Mrs Gregan will be releasing details in regards to children’s interest and trail sessions for our swimming gala.

Year 1 Weekly Blog 24.4.26 - "To follow Jesus means to share His merciful love." Pope Francis

This Sunday is Good Shepherd Sunday and in the Gospel reading we listen to the parable Jesus told His disciples about the good shepherd. Jesus is the Good Shepherd and we have been thinking carefully about how we can be good followers of Him. In RE we have been learning all about the word ‘Ascension’ and we now know that this means to go up, and that is exactly what Jesus did, He went you to be with His father in Heaven, leaving the apostles to continue the work of Jesus. “Christ has no body but yours, No hands, no feet on earth but yours, Yours are the eyes with which he looks Compassion on this world,” The children have thought of many wonderful ways that we can be Jesus’ body and help to care for everyone.

Going deeper in conversation

This week we have been thinking about the internet and how it can bring everybody together, The children enjoyed sharing the things they like to do using the internet and how these things make them feel. We also spoke about how God wants us to feel happy, both in our real lives and our online lives. Continue this conservation at home: Who can we talk to if something upsets us online?

Magic moments

This week had such fun with Miss Charnley, who taught the children all about following instructions when introducing the new computing unit. The children gave Miss Charnley instructions for how to make her jam sandwich… At first these instructions led Miss Charley to make a rather unusual sandwich. As the children became more specific they were able to help her to create the perfect sandwich. The children then partnered up and gave each other instructions to make their own sandwiches, which they very much enjoyed eating!

Certificates

A huge well done to Tommy, you are always so eager and enthusiastic to do your best in every single lesson! You always want to share your ideas and build on other people’s too. This week you completed some fantastic independent writing and really pushed yourself to include such exciting vocabulary. We are so proud of you!

A huge well done to Harry who has been awarded our Star virtue award for being Attentive and Discerning. Harry you look around and see who or what needs help. You are always so quick to help in the class. Thank you for helping God’s world and being such a caring member of our class.

Reminders

Parent drop in: After school on Monday 11th May. We would like to welcome you into the classroom for a brief talk about phonic screening. To share some tips for ways you can support your child on the build up and during the half term holidays. I will also be providing you with some sound cards and different activity sheets to use at home.

Weather: We have been blessed with great weather this week and long may it continue. However we still advise bringing in a coat in case the weather changes during the school day. we also have a box with sun cream in the classroom. Any sun cream must be labelled and the children are encouraged to apply this themselves.

PE days are on Mondays and Wednesdays.

This week...

What a week! The sun has been shining and we have been taking full advantage of it! It is so lovely to be able to shed some layers of clothing!

Worship

This week we have continued our branch ‘To the Ends of the Earth’. Our key words this week were parish, Holy Spirit and family.

We spoke about how we can be like Jesus and be a good friend. Who are your friends?  How do they look after you?

We worked together to make a Friendship jar. We discussed the recipe - this recipe shows us what we need to put into a friendship to make it happy and strong. We had 6 word cards with friendship qualities on them – kindness, sharing, listening, saying sorry, helping others and taking turns. We also added special gems, crosses and coloured pom poms. We all had a go and adding an ingredient and mixing it up, discussing how we can be a good friend.

    • “What’s the most important thing you’d put in a friendship?”

    • “How does it feel when someone is kind or shares with you?”

    • “What can you do if a friend forgets one of these ingredients, like taking turns?”

    • “Where do Christians meet their friends and pray to God?” The parish church.

Our child led worship on Thursday was about the Ascension. After looking at our image, the children knew it showed Jesus ‘going up’ or ‘rising to heaven’. In the words of the Gospel we heard that the people worshipped Jesus and felt great joy. In the video we heard that Jesus ‘will always be with us’. We are like Jesus each and every day. Learning Landscape

In keeping with the glorious weather that God has sent us this week we have:

  • been planting sunflowers/meadow seeds to make our garden a rainbow of colours in the summer!

  • readying the garden by pulling up weeds and watering the plants

  • looking for minibeasts, especially snails for our snail hotel

  • keeping a close eye on the tadpoles…they are getting so big but no sign of back legs yet

  • visiting Forest School to finish making our flower light catchers

  • playing with the parachute on the school field

  • using the BIG outside waterplay! We have have made waterfalls with umbrellas, found out how to make the water wheel work without touching it, used the hose pipes and cascade planks to create a water system.

  • made road signs for our roads and roundabouts…we even made a petrol pump (don’t get excited it’s doesn’t dispense fuel!)

In our indoor learning landscape we have:

  • been following postitional language instructions. Positional language (prepositions) refers to the place where something or someone is, often in relation to other things, such as over, under, beside, or beneath. Teaching the children to use positional words will build their ability to follow and give directions and use language accurately. We played some great games!

  • learnt some new sounds x, z, qu, nk and ng…amazing!

  • been using number to solve problems

  • experimenting with shape

  • using cards to tell our own stories. The children are getting really good at this

  • been making stretchy goo

  • creating symmetrical ladybirds from playdough, buttons and straws

Year 6 Weekly Blog 'working hard is important but there is something that matters even more...believing in yourself' Harry Potter

"Feed the lambs and look after the sheep."

During liturgies we focused on this week’s gospel, John 10:1–10, which uses the picture of a shepherd and his sheep to teach an important lesson about trust, guidance, and choices in life. Jesus explains that just as sheep recognise and follow the voice of a good shepherd who cares for and protects them, people should listen to voices that lead them to kindness, honesty, and safety. He describes himself as the gate, meaning he helps people find the right path and protects them from harm, while false voices can lead people into trouble. This story teaches us that everyone is valued and cared for, and it encourages us to make wise choices, listen to good advice, treat others well, and try to help and protect those around us in our everyday lives.


What have we been learning this week?

Revision and building confidence when approaching SAT’s style questions has been the driving force behind all of our learning this week. This week we have recieved feedback and gone through various different SAT’s style questions. We always celebrate what they have achieved so far, but they also know they need to reflect on those problem areas and be determined to overcome them. We have learnt this week, rushing and carelessness has been behind a lot of our mistakes but CONFIDENCE when approaching this area is also key- we have to believe WE CAN DO IT! Listen to Harry Potter!

With a bank holiday coming up, and only a few weeks to go until May, every day is crucial. Please ensure that your children are in school on time to maximise every learning opportunity.

Attentive and Discerning Star

This half term we will be on the lookout for all the children that are attentive in the way we look at the world and in others, taking the time to notice the big and the small things each day. ‘The Boy at the Back of the Class’ …

As a class we have been reading the novel ‘The boy at the back of the class’ and the children are really enjoying this opprotunity to listen, enjoy and discuss this book. The children have loved hearing how Ahmed has transitioned in to his new school, learning about his background and seeing the friendship between him and the narrator develop. We will be setting off to go with year 5 on Thursday 7th May at 1pm. We will not be arriving back at school until approximately 5pm. Please copmplete the form below to state whether your child has permission to walk back on their own at this time ot whether they will be being collected.

Year 3 Football

Following the cancellation of the Year 3 football tournament, schools were left to organise their own fixtures if wanted. Next Tuesday, 28th April, we have rescheduled the Year 3 football to take place at Heyhouses. The children will play there v Heyhouses.

The children will need football boots and shin pads. School football kit will be given out next week. The children will need to be collected from school and taken straight to Heyhouses. Matches start at 3.50pm and finish by around 4.40pm at the latest.

Representing the school is a big thing and for me, conduct is the most important part of this; ability is second. Playing for school is a proud moment and should be not taken lightly - I am excited that the children will experience this; we have not played Year 3 football before. We all have to adhere to a code of conduct to ensure that the children have an enjoyable experience.

No dogs are allowed on site and parents will be unable to use any facilities there.
